"Although there is plenty to do in Barcelona, Montserrat makes a good day trip outside of the city. About 50 kilometers northwest of the city, you can get there via train in a little over an hour. The mountain is home to the Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat, which can feel overrun with tourists at times, particularly near the statue of Catalonia's iconic saint, La Morenetta (the Black Virgin). For outdoors lovers, the real draw is Montserrat's hiking trails, which unwind above the monastery, and afford stunning views of the jagged, rocky cliff faces—and, as you climb higher—Catalonia sprawled out below."
January visit so much quieter and able to park near the top. Cable cars closed for maintenance January so only the Funicular running and then it closes February for maintenance and Cable cars back open. The rack rail takes you up to the very top.
The Basílica and museum are really good visits. Don’t forget to download the Montserrat app which has a free audio guide for as you walk around.

Montserrat in Catalunya is a truly breathtaking destination, known for its dramatic mountain formations and deep spiritual significance. The monastery, stunning views, and peaceful natural surroundings create a unique atmosphere that inspires reflection, wonder, and a strong connection to both nature and history.

It might look gloomy in the morning from the town below, but you'll be rewarded with great views once you reach above the clouds. There are a few hiking trails. Recommended to pack you own lunch.

Montserrat was a beautiful and peaceful stop during our family trip in Spain. The views were breathtaking, the surroundings were serene, and the experience felt truly special. A perfect place to enjoy nature, culture, and family time.”

Went this past Christmas break. The weather wasn't kind but I got some cool pics. The Black Madonna was interesting to see and the wait wasn't very long. Definitely stop and visit Montserrat and learn about the history.

Views for days!
Pro tip: visit early in the morning before the crowds arrive. While I’m not typically a fan of organized bus tours, it’s actually the most convenient option here—parking can be challenging (see photo), and the tours allow ample time to explore and hike. The walking trails are clearly marked and easy to follow, and the climb to the cross is quite manageable.

Loved this experience and JULIA travel tour was great with Sandra and Jorge... I thought it was more spartan, but got to the top and it was like a small mountain top village in Italy... awesome experience... great day trip

its nice but please pack food because the food in the restaurants are quite bad. the views are really beautiful but it is uphill so be careful to anyone with disabilities, elders or pregnant women, although there's a free bus which can take you around it can be hard to find. the church and black Madonna are gorgeous, it has a great healing atmosphere in there.
