Rooftops and Radical Hotel Designs in Barcelona

"This refined, late 19th century building is the work of the Catalan architect Josep Vilaseca i Casanovas." - The MICHELIN Guide

The 32 Best Hotels in Barcelona

"Set in a 19th-century mansion just off the Passeig de Gràcia, Monument is a chic hotel in a glitzy location. The entrance is large and impressive, and the design is on point, though the real draw here is the food. Lasarte is one of only a couple three-Michelin-starred restaurants in central Barcelona, and it’s not the only excellent dining at the hotel. Other highlights include the very respectable but lower-key Oria, by Basque chef Martín Berasategui, as well as a cocktail bar by local mixology maestro Javier de las Muelas." - Gemma Askham, Isabelle Kliger

Monument Hotel

"How did it strike you on arrival?Set in a 19th-century mansion just off the Passeig de Gràcia, Monument is a chic hotel in a glitzy location. The entrance is large and impressive, and the design is on point. It would be easy to find a hotel this impeccable somewhat intimidating, but Monument’s courteous staff will put you at ease from the moment you step through the door. What’s the crowd like? Many guests here are visiting gourmands who have chosen the hotel for its strong gastronomic offering. Tell us about your room. There are two room classes: suites and Deluxe rooms, all of which have balconies facing either the street or the interior courtyard. The best views are from the Suite Monument and Suite Passeig de Gràcia that overlook Barcelona’s most iconic boulevard and Gaudí's famous La Pedrera building. Every detail has been carefully thought through to maximize your comfort and enjoyment, from the impressive soundproofing that makes the ultra-comfy beds that bit dreamier to the gorgeous, yet functional design features and the free minibar packed with complimentary soft drinks, snacks, and M&Ms — there is no need ever to go hungry, thirsty, or sleepless. How are the beds? The hotel works almost exclusively with upscale brands: Egyptian-cotton linens by Barcelona firm Bassols, 100 percent goose-down comforters from Ferdown, and pillows by Cocomat. How are the bathrooms? All bathrooms come with separate rain showers and bathtubs, as well as heated floors. The products are from Diptyque. Is there Wi-Fi?Wi-Fi is free in all rooms and public areas. Anything stand out about other services and features? When you learn that Spain’s most Michelin-starred chef Martín Berasategui has been put in charge of gastronomy at Monument, you will not be surprised that the culinary offering here is a cut above the rest. From Lasarte, one of only two three-Michelin-starred restaurants in central Barcelona, to the modest, but by no means underwhelming one-star Oria, to the generous à la carte breakfast, served on Monument’s splendid Verbena rooftop terrace, this is the place to impress even the pickiest of gourmands. Bottom line: worth it, and why?Monument has established itself as one of the brightest shining stars on the Barcelona hotel scene. Book a stay here and you will not be disappointed." - Isabelle Kliger

The location of this hotel was perfect, and both the concierge and housekeeping teams delivered excellent service. Unfortunately, my check-in experience left a lot to be desired. When I arrived, the front desk agent was holding my passport and still managed to enter my name incorrectly. She then told me I was at the wrong hotel. I calmly explained that I was certain I was in the right place and provided my reservation confirmation. After reviewing it, she suddenly found my name on a printed list that had been sitting there all along. Without acknowledging the error, she handed me the paper and continued the check-in process—no apology, no accountability. I couldn’t help but wonder why she was so quick to try to send me elsewhere. While I tried not to let my mind spiral, a simple apology would’ve been the professional and respectful thing to offer. To make matters worse, a couple who arrived after me was checked in and headed to their room before my own check-in was completed. After an exhausting 8-hour flight and multiple Ubers, this lack of professionalism made an already long day feel even heavier. This experience was disappointing, especially considering how great everything else about the hotel was. First impressions matter, and this one unfortunately missed the mark.

The rooms are lovely, large and comfortable. The massage at the spa was wonderful. The rooftop bar was fun and the Oria restaurant was superb. But best of all was the staff. At every turn we were treated as if we were the most important guest at the hotel. This is the goal of every 5 star hotel. Well done.

Our entire family absolutely loved our time in Barcelona. We shared in 3 rooms…the Suite Paseo de Gracia, Suite Monument, and Family Room which was 2 adjoining rooms. Experiencing the Monument Hotel was spectacular. Service was top notch at every level. The rooms are exceptionally clean and room service includes complimentary drinks, snacks, and fruits restocked daily. The bath and body products are Diptyque Lait Frais one of my favorite scents. The breakfast is well worth the price. Fresh fruits, breads, vegetables, nuts, , pancakes, eggs, anvocado toast, and almost anything else you’d ever want prepared. It’s served from 7-11 am. Artem was an exceptional attendant and gave us the best service each day getting in and out of the hotel on our way for the day! Very hard worker. Andrea decorated our little princesses room with a castle themed presentation including stuffed dragons, a welcome princesses letter, balloons and made the room a true princesses castle! Andrea was so exceptional at every detail throughout our entire vacation. We’d like to thank the entire staff from our breakfast crew to our housekeepers to our concierge team for giving us the family vacation we hoped for. The location was perfect for everything we experienced in Barcelona ! 10 stars and higher if I could rate the Monument hotel. Excellent well trained courteous team!

The concierge and front door services were superb. My luggage was lost by the airline, the concierge, Mr Cestells was very kind and helpful. The entire front staff was amazing. One of them was literally in the street flagging down 3 taxis for our group. The rooftop restaurant is also great. The wait staff is truly wonderful. They were so friendly and helpful. The 3 nights in Barcelona were the best days of our 16 day trip thanks to us choosing the Monument Hotel.

We booked Monument Hotel last minute through the Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts program after a frustrating morning at another property where we were left waiting for hours in a crowded lobby. Since we only had one day in Barcelona, I wanted our stay to feel special, and Monument Hotel delivered in every way.||I called ahead to confirm availability and was warmly assured we could be accommodated. We came right over from the Diagonal area, and from the moment we arrived, the experience was flawless. A kind bellman greeted us, took our luggage, and escorted us up to the front desk where we were offered water and a thorough overview of the hotel’s amenities.||The hotel itself is a gorgeous boutique property located in a prime shopping area surrounded by luxury brands like Rolex, Hermès, and Cartier. We booked a Junior Suite and were delighted by the high ceilings, elegant design, and a beautiful balcony overlooking the tree-lined street below. The bed was incredibly comfortable—like sleeping on a cloud—and the room had plenty of space to reorganize our luggage for our flight the next day.||Breakfast on Level A was a treat, with a fresh cold buffet and made-to-order options like eggs, omelets, pancakes, and French toast. Although a storm kept us from visiting the pool and rooftop bar, we found the ambience of the entire hotel relaxing and luxurious. Subtle floral scents floated through the air, adding to the overall sense of calm.||We didn’t dine at the Michelin-starred restaurants onsite since I was traveling with my son (who’s a bit of a picky eater), but room service was prompt and satisfying. Every staff member we interacted with was kind, helpful, and professional, making our short stay feel effortless.||If I return to Barcelona, I wouldn’t hesitate to stay at Monument Hotel again. It’s a perfect blend of location, service, and boutique luxury.

This is definitely a luxury boutique hotel (smaller than you think, not a large hotel) that is designed well and is super modern. The best part of the hotel without a doubt is the staff. Everyone I came across was great, friendly and willing to help. That is quite rare. The rooms are really nice, spacious (we had the family suite, 2 rooms and was absolutely massive). My issue though was they were a little dark (not much natural light) and there is the underground train below (you can hear even from 3rd floor) so every minute you'll hear a rumble. It may not bother everyone, but for sensitive sleepers it might. So be aware of that. The breakfast was great, food quality good and the terrace quite tight, but also quite well put together. Overall 4/5 for me!

The service, cleanliness, food and most of all location are the best. The “balcony “ and Junior Suite are a bit small, but comfortable. The bathroom is a good size. We did not have much of a view, we looked out on the inner area looking at other buildings, but it was very quiet. The rooftop area is a lovely place to hang out.

We highly recommend The Monument Hotel! It’s rare for us to leave a hotel without any major suggestions for improvement, but our stay here was truly excellent. From the moment we arrived, the staff impressed us with their competence and the prompt, smooth check-in process. Our room was exceptionally spacious, beautifully sound-insulated, and we loved having our own private balcony. A thoughtful bonus was the complimentary selection of juices, soft drinks, and popcorn in the mini-bar—a really nice touch. The only minor downsides were a leaky toilet and the dry iron (we personally prefer a steam iron), but these small issues didn’t take away from an otherwise wonderful experience. Breakfast was definitely a highlight. They served one of the best Eggs Benedict we've ever had, alongside delicious pastries, fresh granola, and excellent coffee. Although I was initially disappointed that the mixed juices I had been looking forward to weren’t available, the staff went above and beyond by preparing a special ginger and lemon tea for me instead. Overall, The Monument Hotel offered a memorable and luxurious stay. We would absolutely return!

Yelp
I almost hesitate to write this review - the Monument is our favorite boutique hotel in Barcelona. We feel so lucky to have found it and hope to return many times. The lobby is chic. The service world-class. Central location in the City.

Yelp
Just got back from a two day stint in Barcelona where we stayed at Monument on the Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts program. Excellent hotel. Service on check-in was exemplary, and the concierge Juan took his time to help us plan out what we wanted to see. He was able to get us next-day tickets to Sagrada and was even able to get my friend in touch with a local private mountaineer for a climbing expedition. Very professional and very helpful! Room was extremely comfortable. They gave us a double upgrade to a Junior Suite on the top floor with a wonderful balcony overlooking the street from just about tree level. All the non-alcoholic drinks and snacks in the mini-bar were complementary which was a surprising change from what I'm used to, and a feature we took advantage of multiple times - they had some very good dark chocolates that we greatly enjoyed! The rooftop bar/restaurant is lovely in the evening, and is also where breakfast is served. Their breakfast service is top notch - it's priced such that I wouldn't normally pay so much for breakfast but since it was included with the Amex program it was definitely a great way to start a day. Downstairs there are two restaurants that both have michelin stars, inclusing Lasarte which is one of only a handful of 3-star restaurants in all of Spain. Sadly we stayed Monday/Tuesday which were the days it was closed, but it's something I'd heavily considering trying if we stayed again!

Yelp
We had an amazing stay here on our honeymoon! The room itself was a bit small, but the staff, cleanliness and grounds were incredible. I loved that you could customize which lights you kept on, so at night we'd keep the lights above the bed on, which looked like little stars! Staff was very attentive and helpful and even made a beautiful surprise for our honeymoon where they found photos of us and put them on our bed on our last night. It was incredible and so special. It felt so comfortable and warm there and great location, walking distance to good restaurants, designer stores, Gaudi attractions and Las Ramblas. The complimentary rooftop breakfast was incredible. There were many yogurts and fruits to choose from, fresh bread with tomato you could put on top to make your own pan con tomate, and in addition to the buffet, it was also included to order off the menu! There were all types of eggs, chia pudding etc. we dream about this breakfast! Best hotel breakfast we've had. Would definitely recommend this hotel!

Yelp
We selected Monument Hotel for our recent visit to Barcelona by process of elimination. We knew we wanted a luxury hotel in Eixample district. There are many, a different one highly recommended by some friends. We, however, chose Monument Hotel over all the others because of the size and layout of the accommodations available and, of greatest importance, the availability of a walk-in shower for my husband who has mobility limits. We are so pleased our research lead us to Monument Hotel. From the point of our jet-lagged arrival, things could not have gone more smoothly. The staff are outstanding and so accommodating. We arrived around 11a and were told that our room--a Jr Suite Barcelona--was available, a pleasant surprise. Later that afternoon when we were losing steam, Juan, one of the concierges, guided us to a nearby tapas restaurant where we enjoyed a delicious early (by Barcelona standards) dinner. The rest of our week-long stay continued in the same pleasant vein. The Hotel does not have the most impressive lobby, but it has two Michelin-starred restaurants; a wonderful daily buffet breakfast; an all-day, casual tapas restaurant next to the roof-top pool; and a very accommodating and friendly staff, including a superb concierge staff. A special shout-out to Juan who took great care of us all week long! The location could not be better, a block from Casa Milà, two from the Block of Discord, and La Sagrada Familía is a 10-minute ride via public transportation or a 20-minute walk. Numerous restaurants and shops are just outside the door along busy Passeig de Gràcia and its side streets, but none of the noise of that hustle and bustle transcends Monument Hotel once you are welcomed inside by the doorman. Our highest accolades to Monument Hotel!

Yelp
Wow! If you want top class all the way then I highly recommend this hotel. They will treat you like royalty and make you feel very comfortable. The accommodations are very modern and tasteful, the breakfast option is a great addition to the experience. They do everything you wished all hotels do, they treat you with respect and they value your feedback. They made our first trip to Barcelona an incredible one!!! Thank you especially to Xavi the Concierge. He recommended an amazing place to get great paella and was always very helpful when we needed guidance. If you visit Barcelona give this hotel a chance. The location is great and close to everything!

Yelp
Amazing stay, stayed here 2 days before my cruise and one day after, and the front desk guys are the most helpful I've seen, the room service is spectacular including gifts and love from the staff that was not expected , and heavily made us notice how much detail they pay attention too!

Yelp
My wife and I just returned from a 5-night stay in the Monument for our 25th wedding anniversary. Everything about our stay lived up to the hotel's 5-star rating and the glowing reviews on virtually every website. We selected a junior suite Barcelona which included the king bed and adjacent area with sofa and desk. The bathroom had a deep soaking tub perfect to soothe our muscles after a long day of sightseeing. The staff were professional, courteous, and incredibly helpful. Since it was our 25th anniversary, I was able to prearrange through email a chilled bottle of cava and rose petals on the bed a week before arrival. My wife was so surprised when she opened the door to the room! The amenities were all first-rate, from the bathrobes to the minibar where all snacks and non-alcoholic beverages were free and replenished daily. The staff made us feel pampered and cared for - always greeting us bon dia, opening doors for us, and generally making us feel like a valued guest. (Not every 5-star hotel does this!) A special shout-out to the evening concierge, Xavi, who gave us some great local recommendations and was generally happy to answer all our questions about good restaurants, safe areas to walk at night, etc. In terms of location, we were a block from Casa Mila and a couple of blocks from Casa Batllo and the Metro. It was incredibly easy to hop on the train and get to everywhere else we needed to go in the city, though frankly we could have gotten to most of the tourist sites if we felt like walking. If you like either actual or window shopping, you can't do much better in the world than Passeig de Gracia. Many of the name luxury brands are steps away, as well as a few brands I had never heard of. There are plenty of restaurants and bars in the neighborhood, though there are two Michelin star restaurants just downstairs in the hotel's first floor. I cannot recommend the Monument Hotel enough to all future travelers.

Yelp
Absolutely gorgeous! We loved the suite we had and the views from the balcony. The amenities we ordered to the room were amazing. I have a dairy allergy and the options were lovely. My husband and I stayed in late May for our anniversary. We enjoyed the breakfast and rooftop bar. The service from all staff was absolutely wonderful. I hope we can come back one day!

Yelp
I was sooo much disappointed with the Hotel, Service it's ok. Anyway, too expensive for what you became. This picture is from the Suite bathroom. The Restaurant has a nice view, breakfast nothing special.

Yelp
I really liked this hotel, the entire hotel must have been recently remodeled. They have 3 star Michelin restaurant in the hotel which, I thought I had a reservation at, but there was some confusion with concierge so missed that. This is a great location to everything in very upscale area.

Dimitry R.

Yelp
Luxury looking hotel with friendly staff and comfortable beds. However, this is not a 5 star hotel due to lack of attention to detail. We stayed at The Monument May 11-14 in a Junior suite. The note about a special event that I've communicated in advanced was ignored. Leaky hand held shower head and broken tub drain were never fixed despite raising this to front desk. This is something that room service should proactively identify and raise to maintenance at a 5 star property, which was not done here. In fact, we received a call over a leak coming from our room due to poorly designed shower drain, but nothing was done to correct this during the entire stay. The reservation was for two , but only one coffee cup was provided in the minibar with a bottle opener missing. I would expect a pre-check in check to ensure that everything is ready and up to the hotel standard, which was missing here. Lastly, the offered 58Euro spa credit could not be used as the Spa could not be reached by phone despite raising this to front desk. The front desk took no action to address the issue and no alternative accommodation was offered during the stay or checkout. Overall, a disappointing experience for my birthday trip.

Michael F.

Yelp
Outstanding hotel in a safe upscale area. Great location, we walked almost everywhere, including Sagrada Familia, la Pedrera, and down la Rambla to the market Boqueria. The hotel service was outstanding and over the top. We got engaged during our stay and the staff scattered rose petals on the bed and left us a complimentary bottle of champagne! It was also my birthday the next day and they left a small cake/dessert and candle in the room. The concierge (Juan) was extremely helpful in arranging everything from day excursions (Montserrat is a must) to dining recommendations and reservations. All the staff was extremely polite and helpful. The included daily breakfast on the rooftop Glasss restaurant was excellent and included a European style buffet and hot entrees ordered from the menu. I have stayed at Ritz-Carltons, Fairmonts, etc and this tops them all. When we return to Barcelona, we will definitely stay here and only here.
