What a view!!! If you are visiting Guanajuato you must make the trip up to this statute. It's a monument to a hero of the Mexican revolution but more than that it's location affords a commanding view of the city and mountains. While you can take the tram both up and down, I suggest just taking it up. The walk down is much easier than I would have expected.

Beautiful views of the entire city from the top. You can either do the steep climb to the top or you can take the funicular for 40 pesos per direction.

A must see and the story must be understood. Not a lot up on the overlook as far as restaurants. Many food carts, aquas frescos, souvenir shops.

The views from up here are amazingly beautiful. We sat and watched the sunset and all the lights turn on in the city. Food is available, drinks, bathrooms and souvenirs are available to purchase. Enjoyed the view. 😍

Google
Great view of the city. I recommend coming at sunset to see the different lighting and once the sun goes down you can hear all of the music coming from the town below.

If you walk, be prepared for the elevation!! Lots of souvenirs and food once you arrive. Parking is limited so maybe it is better to take an Uber.

An expansive and breathtaking view of the city unlike any other I have seen before. I loved coming up here every now and then to sit and ponder for a bit or to simply take in the view.

Google
A deep experience, having read the history of this remarkable monument. Overlooking Guanajuato was breathtaking, evoking impressions of a miniature city with churches, many plazas, and miniature people walking in between. I highly recommend visiting Al Pípila. Take your time, this is México, time moves slower here than in the US or Canada.

Yelp
Great statue, nicely made, powerful image and a great story behind it. This is on top, a reward after taking the funicular here! Local hero of the city, chekc out the small museum near by to find out about the mining history of Guanajato! You can walk up here but the funicular is a fun experience! Either way, you will be rewarded with great views of the city!

Yelp
We stayed in the Centro Historico district and saw El Pipila from above. I didn't know the story until our second night in Guanajuato when I read about the history. Criss Cross Apple Sauce Kids because it's Story Time. Juan Amaro was born with disabilities and some say he had a hunchback. He was given the nickname, El Pipila because the way he walked resembled the movements of a turkey. He worked in the nearby silver mines where the gaseous environment and harsh conditions only made matters worse. The Spaniards were beginning to hear rumblings of a rebellion brewing so they barricaded themselves in one of the most fortified buildings in the city, the Alhondiga de Granaditas. The Alhondiga de Granaditas was the city's grain storage and it had solid stonewalls and various advantageous points for the Spanish archers to quickly eliminate threats from below. The Spaniards wanted to wait until more reinforcements came to eliminate the rebellion once and for all. A decision that would change history, Juan Amaro, El Pipila, strapped a large stone on his back, picked up a bucket of tar, and grabbed a lit torch. He ran full force into the only weak spot of the Alhondiga de Granditas, the wooden door. The large stone on his back protected him from the expert Spanish archers high above and once at the door he coated it in tar and lit it ablaze with his torch. The fire destroyed the wooden door and the smoke dramatically visually impaired those expert Spanish archers. The rioters were able to breach past the burning door and overtake the Alhondiga de Granditas. Not one of the Spanish garrison survived and this first victory against the Spanish WENT VIRAL without the aid of smartphones. The tale of Juan Amaro, El Pipila, spread throughout Mexico. If El Pipila can do something, then so shall I. The rebel yell of El Pipila sang for many years as the Mexican revolution removed the Spaniards and Mexico became independent. Definitely visit El Pipla during the day or the night but how? TIP 1: The Funicular, which is a tram, is located on Avenida Constancia. If you are at Jardin de la Union. go down San Diego alongside the Teatro Juarez, and then make a left. TIP 2: Buy a Round Trip Ticket because you ain't walking back down. TIP 3: Definitely go during the day but go back just before sunset. TIP 4: You can buy drinks and snacks at the top or bring your own. This is a perfect picnic basket with cheeses, fruits, and wine on date night. Did I mention the views? The views are IG worthy. Period Full Stop. Mic Drop. You get the picture. Remember, anyone can be a hero as it just takes one person to stand up for what is right. Thank

Yelp
The main reason to come here is less for the statue/monument than for the view of the city. This is a very popular spot not just for tourists but also for locals and thus the streets leading to/from it tend to be packed with cars. There is a nearby funicular that is an attraction itself - as well as many carts selling food or souvenirs.

Yelp
Judging by the gorgeous views and crowded masses of people both present here, this place is a must-visit destination for tourists traveling in Guanajuato. The hike up to the view was not too bad, though we did find that having two aguas frescas on hand for the trek to refresh ourselves and replenish our blood sugar helped keep us alive during the journey. The maze-like path was marked fairly well, though it also became fairly intuitive trying to get higher up the hill. You probably won't be wondering if you have made it up to the viewpoint or not because once you reach it, you'll notice that that's where all the people have gathered, taking pictures and gawking at the rainbow palette of buildings. Thankfully there are arena like steps that you can sit on to properly enjoy the view. This monument is historically significant in the timeline of Mexican independence, but in all honesty I'm just a crappy American tourist so I really can't tell you much more. What I can say is that the view is spectacular and allows you to take great photos to show off for when you come back home from your vacation.

Yelp
My husband and I stayed in an Airbnb very close to El Pipila. It is a very busy area, with a lot of vendors and tourists. I would suggest taking the funicular, a cab, or walking up to the monument. Parking in the area and driving seem to be a challenge since everything bottlenecks as you get to the monument. That being said, it does offer an amazing panoramic view of the city below. I would suggest visiting both during the day and at night to enjoy the view. There are plenty of food vendors up at the monument as well. There are also many people selling other items, such as souvenirs and clothing. There are also tour guides selling package deals to visit the other sites around Guanajuato.

Yelp
Came here just before sunset. Gorgeous viewa. Lots of snack food stands and there's even a little bar overlooking Guanajuato city. I got here by funicular , the little red tram . Plenty of picture spots.

Yelp
This is the best viewpoint over Guanajuato. There is an enclosed parking lot about a half block away that cost 16 pesos. The viewpoint itself is free, and totally excellent. You can climb the monument itself, for 10 pesos, but I would skip it. The view is better from down below. Also, they have enclosed the top of the monument in plexiglass, which makes a mess if you want to take pictures.

Yelp
An absolute must for any tourist visiting GTO. You can come up here by walking through the alleyways OR you can take the tram up for a few pesos. I walked up and it was a bit of a hike but totally doable. The view is amazing! There are ton of vendors around the monument too so you can get food or souvenirs.

Yelp
Easy, quick hike from Jardin de la Union. The statue has historic significance- an independence hero, but the must-see is the spectacular view! Guanajuato is marvelous from up there. If you don't feel like walking up, there is a funicular "train" that you can take for 50 pesos. To get to the station for this, walk a bit down the street on the side of Teatro Juarez, past the jewelry vendors. There will also be lots of vendors at the top if you are looking for cheap souvenirs.

Yelp
We walked UPHILL for 25 minutes to see this monument. Very nice view of the city. Took the tram down for 50p. Lots of merchants in area. If your not ready for a hike I recommend taking the tram they call it the funicular.
