Rod's Diner was one of my favorite State and Packard area restaurants. Luckily, Moon Cafe is Rods' spiritual successor, with essentially the same pitch: Korean comfort food and frozen yogurt colliders. Park, the endearingly grumpy chef/manager of Rod's Diner seems to have been replaced with a younger, cheerier man. The new guy is charming and loves making conversation with his guests-- I liked Park but Moon Cafe's representative is really growing on me. The decor has been much improved as well, but I'll miss Rod's grungy vibe and the pictures of customers plastering the walls.
Little has changed as far as the menu and frozen yogurt offering goes. There might be a few new entrees, but all the old favorites remain. You'll find a lot of the standard Korean offerings, more or less a similar menu to Kang's, Rich JC, etc. My first visit I had the Kimchi Fried Rice, which was excellent. Very solid dumplings too. My second visit I tried the Bulgogi, one of my favorites from the Rod's era, which was good but not quite at the level of Rod's, in my opinion. The new owners are definitely talented cooks in their own right though, and I'm looking forward to trying more of their creations.
Moon still maintains the cozy, mom n pop vibe that I loved about Rod's, along with the same high level of Korean cooking. I haven't tried the new froyo yet but I'm very much looking forward to doing so-- it looks largely unchanged from the Rod's era, and those colliders were awesome. I'm just happy that Moon has managed to keep a lot of Rod's charm, I'll definitely be going back soon, and often!
