The 24 Best Restaurants In Melbourne - Melbourne - The Infatuation

"Moon Mart started life as an online store selling kimchi made from the chef’s grandmother’s recipe. Today, it’s a joyful cafe with a cult following. Shelves hold condiments and preserves, and the inventive brunch menu takes cues from the convenience stores of Korea and Japan. Those who know this place know it for one of three dishes: the cheese, kimchi, and funky fermented honey jaffle (a type of toasted sandwich), the char sui bacon-and-egg roll, and a hash brown given the okonomiyaki treatment with Kewpie mayonnaise and bonito flakes. Whether you’re at a wooden table with mates, brunching solo at a street-facing bench, or gearing up to explore South Melbourne Market nearby, the light-flooded room guarantees a zen start to the day. The matcha is some of the best in town—get it layered with strawberry compote, or espresso for extra kick." - ellen fraser

Attention to detail type of establishment. Thoughtful use of ingredients and considered serving utensils. Get the Tonkatsu rice set and consume before 12:00 PM, go about your day from there. Elite spread of condiments with this dish, will be back to try the breakfast. Waltz 25 min walk up the road from southern cross station if you’re visiting Melbourne.

Unique Japanese-inspired cafe. Tried the rye shokupan - one with curried egg and another with salmon - both unique, delicious, and highly recommended. Coffee was great and paired nicely with the food. The space is two stories and can get quite busy, so best to visit during off-peak hours. Overall, a standout spot with a distinct offering that’s well worth checking out.

Not sure why this place is not a 5/5 rating. Food is epic. Best strawberry matcha around made with homemade strawberry jam. May is an absolute delight and really enjoys and gets to know her clientele and has a great sense of humour. The rice sets are completely on point. I will be going here regularly. The tangerine donuts are so good. I loved everything about this cafe. High high high recommendation. Loved it

I have wanted to visit Moon Mart for some time, and our experience was pleasant :) Staff were very friendly & helpful. The cafe is small and well catered for groups of 2-4 people inside. We had the Unagi + Pork Sando, Bulgogi Muffin + Okonomiyaki hash brown. Big flavours & generous portions. Interesting selection of iced + hot drinks + pantry items. The Passionfruit Cheong was very refreshing. We left very full & glad to have enjoyed a different style of brunch! We also appreciate that running a cafe with few staff can be tricky at times, and we were grateful for the kind service! Thank you.

Lunch at @moon_mart_ in South Melbourne: modern Korean/Japanese/Asian cuisine with friendly service. We were there on Good Friday, and only had a short queue of 10-15 minutes. And we were even served with water while queuing! . Tonkatsu: Berkshire pork schnitzel w rice, wasabi, pickles, yuzu & apple sauce served w miso soup: very nicely done! . Hoedeopbap: a rice bowl with raw fish, corn, zucchini, butter lettuce, shiso, chojang, white kimchi, miso soup & soy cured yolk: soooo good! . Jangjorim: soy braised mushrooms and rice bowl with Wagyu beef - this was ridiculously delicious!

Moon Cafe was one of the places I had always wanted to visit in Melbourne — it looked like a must-visit spot on Instagram. Maybe my expectations were too high, or maybe it just didn’t live up to the image I had created in my mind after seeing it online. Either way, I was really disappointed. I took an Uber and made time in my schedule to get there, which probably made the letdown feel even worse. The coffee was extremely weak and bland — no aroma, no flavor, nothing memorable. Food options were also very limited, with only breakfast items available. I tried the kimchi jaffle, and... it was honestly quite underwhelming. I understand why they’d choose to serve jaffles in Melbourne, but I think it would’ve been better if they had used sourdough with a generous amount of kimchi instead. The filling was small in portion, and the bread was overcooked and not tasty. The okonomiyaki hash brown tasted okay thanks to the sauce, but I was surprised by how greasy it was — oil was literally dripping out. The empty fridge display was also a letdown, and the cozy, vibrant atmosphere I’d seen on Instagram just wasn’t there. The only saving grace was the staff — they were incredibly friendly, and I truly appreciated their service.

We had brunch today and Bulgogi sausage muffin had lots of great flavours and loved it. Curried scramble egg was not that great. Our coconut tea and chrysanthemum tea was ok. Service was lacking. We didn’t even have cutlery for our food. Two young staffs were eating while serving customers.

Small Cozy place - Matcha is really smooth, not at all powdery. The dirty matcha had a balanced blend of coffee and matcha. The food is fragrant, tasty and love the buttery shokupan! Had the Unagi eel katsu and char siew bacon with truffle.

13/7/25 - 3 stars *** only had the matcha *** Pretty cute little Japanese brunch spot in South Melbourne. Was looking for a drink after going through the markets and found this place. Iced matcha latte Intensity: S+, 8.5/10. I can definitely taste the matcha but it was slightly masked by the excess milk. Consistency: S+, 8.5/10. Smooth but felt a bit off due to too much milk as above. Value: S, 8/10. $7 is not too bad.
