The Florida Keys Are Home to Way More Specialties Than Pie

"A comfort-forward café and bakery known for standout brunch and pastries: warm, perfectly spiced shakshuka; a fresh-catch Benedict featuring blackened yellowtail with poached eggs and silky hollandaise; and a pastry case of favorites like coconut carrot cake and flaky raspberry–key lime turnovers worth taking home." - Carrie Honaker

Good food, nice bakery items fresh made and reasonable prices. Very friendly staff, attentive but not too attentive. The food was great, I really liked the green chili, very fresh and home made flavor. Cool local art work as well, we loved the Ravens.

I was really looking forward to trying this place. The atmosphere and service were great. I had placed an order for takeout. Unfortunately my order was wrong. I ordered a ham and cheese omelette, add tomatoes & onion (receipt attached) what I received was a dry spinach egg patty with no cheese, very little ham, topped with onions and peppers. I was starving & paid $16+ for this breakfast so I reluctantly ate it. The toast was also not toasted. It was barely grilled (pictures below) My husbands order was correct & well made though. He ordered the Italian club with truffle fries.

Wonderful place very laid back. Friendly staff. Healthy, eclectic variety of excellent food choices ! We Had breakfast on the patio .very good healthy organic and gluten free options. Another day stopped in for basil lemonade, and gluten free cookies. Which were delightful! Our Last evening in town we had an amazing dinner . I had veggie burger with g/f bread. Sweet potato fries .We were served by the owner and he said the veggie burger patty was a secret recipe from his mom and grandmother. Hands down Best veggie burger I've ever had . My husband had chicken curry coconut soup which I tried and was Excellent . I dint remember his entry but I do remember he was happy. Ya gotta go there at least once it's a wonderful experience!

It was a little warm in there today but the vibe and food made up for the temperature! Elvis french toast was delectable, BLAT sandwich was the best and the Frenchman lamb burger was a huge hit too! Iced latte was also perfect!! Highly recommend stopping at Moondog

Just had breakfast at Moondog Café and it was a total treat! I had the fresh pistachio croissant and an everything bagel croissant with coffee — everything was super tasty and clearly fresh-baked. The space itself is beautiful and inviting, and I had the pleasure of meeting Sasa, the owner — a wonderful young entrepreneur who’s done a fantastic job creating such a welcoming and high-quality spot. Highly recommend stopping by if you’re in Mancos!

This is one of the best restaurants I have found in the Mancos area. The food is delicious, the drinks are amazing, and the staff is always friendly and welcoming. We especially love their happy hour!

Google
Wow! As a Mancos local, I am so pleased at our new Moondog Cafe and Bakery. The pastries are out of this world- the savory stuffed croissants are perfect for lunch, and the guava pastry is now my favorite. Had the best lamb burger (The Frenchman) for lunch, and for breakfast we had the Shakshuka and the Trout Benedict! Everything has been wonderful. They are new, and there is a lot of negative comments about service - but I’ve been multiple times now and everyone is great. Give them some grace while they find their rhythm - the workers are dedicated and kind. Absolutely go, have a delicious pastry to go or sit down for an amazing meal 💙

Google
Definitely coming back! Super cute inside with beautiful artwork. Breakfast menu had something for everyone and everything we ordered was great. Staff was great and kid-friendly. The baked goods were well stocked and some of the best we've ever had. Don't leave without a Moon Bombe if you like chocolate (and GF!). We will be back for lunch/dinner. Note to staff: only bummer was my breakfast tacos fell apart. Maybe double up on the corn tortillas 👍🏻

Yelp
Great breakfast but no one waited on me so I left my table and ordered at the register. after that service was good. Got a date bar afterwards and it was so dry I threw it away.

Yelp
Loved it! Funky place in a small town. Menu has lots of great options - breakfast and lunch. We opted for the lamb burger with fries. It was excellent - spiced lamb patty covered in Brie and carmelized onions. Very tasty! We got fries with it. Crispy and hot. Service was fast and friendly. N*joy!

Yelp
Great place to eat breakfast. Superb croissants, efficient service, and enough stuff on the walls to hold your interest. Highly recommend

Yelp
Came for breakfast and was not disappointed. I had the Mesa Verde Benedict which was recommended. It was delish. The poached eggs were perfect, the potatoes were good, and enjoyed the sliced avocados. Lindsey served us and what a delight. Watched her interact with all the customers. This is a sweet place that felt very welcoming. Highly recommend if you're in Mancos.

Yelp
I'm a local and kind of obsessed with this cute place. The avocado tofu benedict is one of the best vegan breakfasts I've ever had, and they've got good gluten-free options too. The coffee and pastries are excellent. I really like the servers. It's just a gem.

Yelp
We just finished a wonderful lunch at Moondog Cafe. Our food was fantastic and Maxine our server was friendly and attentive. We will definitely be back the next time we're in town!

Yelp
What a gem! Food was so fresh and satisfying, service was amazing and the vibe was everything you'd want from a small town artisan cafe&bakery. The pretty server was thoughtful to give us a recommendation to visit Strater Hotel in Durango and we did! Kids loved it. Moondog gave us a great first impression of Mancos. Thank you!!

Yelp
We visited this restaurant almost at closing time. Maxine was super friendly and very helpful. The food was outstanding. Best salad ever!!

Yelp
As an inveterate foodie (lived 17 years in Paris), it isn't often that I enjoy a dish that is completely innovative AND delicious. But Moondog's Mesa Verde Benedict with polenta cake was a revelation! Delicate, subtly hot chipotle hollandaise, two perfectly poached eggs and chorizo bits, some avocado and perfectly seasoned and cooked home fries. Plus the service was excellent and friendly and the walls covered in lovely local art! BRAVO!!

Yelp
I've been here a few times and the food and baked goods are amazing but the service always sucks. Servers seem like they have no idea what's happening ever. The woman serving me always has an attitude and gets my order wrong.

Yelp
We had dinner here and it was so..... disappointing! The water was warm, the servers were clueless, the food was awful! I was so excited by the menu and we wanted to try breakfast, lunch and dinner here - but we will never go back! Whoever is cooking the food at dinner needs to learn how to cook. The server told us that the special was ravioli - but it was a huge bowl of starchy tortellini with an inedible sauce. The black bean burger was dry and tasteless -not crispy at all with way too much lettuce and a huge piece of tomato and onion on too much bread - that whole meal was a Fail as well. Our appetizer was gross! We couldn't finish anything. On the plus side, after talking to one of the servers for 15 minutes and asking for the owner (who was not there - but should have been) she finally gave us a discount on our bill. The whole experience was so negative and I really hope the owner hires a new chef for dinner and gets it together.

Yelp
Poor service from Shasa! I waited and waited at a counter to order a meal. the above guy ignored my presence. when I brought it to his attention he just stood there without a response or an apology. I walked out letting others coming into the restaurant to go somwhere else. They listened.

Yelp
STRIKE ONE - First Visit: Nice remodel. Friendly staff. Our server was pleasant, but after taking our order, she never again returned to our table. She didn't come by to see how our meal was or refill our coffees. I had to flag down another person to take my watery, undercooked Omelette back to the kitchen for repairs. All while our server was graciously tending to tables with newcomers and other appreciative diners. STRIKE TWO - Second Visit: Again, we had a pleasant server. This one did return to check on us, although she failed to notice my tiny, empty water glass, which was strategically placed at the edge of our table. I had to retrieve the water pitcher from the Server Station to refill our glasses. My wife and I both ordered Eggs Benedict (two different styles). Upon our first bite, we each commented that our English Muffins were gooey. We peeled back the toppings to see that, sure enough, the middle of our Muffins were under-baked and doughy. Very unpleasant. After pushing aside the gooey Muffins, we engaged our server to let her know. She said she'd go see what she could do. After several long minutes, she came back to our table with our bill and told us, "our muffins are homemade and they leave them a little soft in the middle," all while we're looking at and showing her the gooey, under-baked dough of the "Homemade" English Muffins. We understand the idea of, "crispy on the outside/fluffy on the inside," but half-baked? No, of course not! That's not healthy, not to mention unappealing and off-putting. STRIKE THREE - Still Second Visit: It's not Eggs Benedict without the English Muffin, and that's what we got. We paid full price ($16.5 and $17.5) for an incomplete and substandard meal. The Manager never came by to offer a replacement, or add to the weak explanation of why their "Homemade" English Muffins have a gooey, under-baked dough in the middle. Our server never offered to compensate with ANYTHING. Like maybe replace the Muffins, how about a piece of toast, or can I give you a discount on your meal? NOPE. (and we still left her a ten dollar tip) For us, it's never a good day or a comfortable situation to call attention to a problem with a meal. We don't wanna make a scene, but this could not go unaddressed. The fact that they never offered to fix the problem was completely unacceptable and a downright shame. They're a BAKERY for crying out loud! This is something over which they should be appalled and embarrassed. TO CONCLUDE: Moondog Cafe is not concerned with the quality of their baked goods, nor were they interested in fixing our meal or making us happy in any way. We live within walking distance to Moondog and there are few-to-no other options for breakfast in Mancos, but we are not interested in ever going back to Moondog Cafe. TWO STARS: I wanted to give ONE STAR but the wait staff are friendly and nice, although they all need to improve their server-skills. Too bad the Bakery and the Cowardly Manager is dragging them all down.

Yelp
Great environment, great service and interesting (great!) food choices! Definitely worth the drive from Durango, Cortez or even Albuquerque! Try it, you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
in all categories. SO worth the 8 month wait for the re-creation of this solid Mancos establishment. Closed Tuesday & Wednesday. Open 7:30-3:30. All menu items available all day! Creatively plated, a delight for eyes & tastebuds. Pastry items look amazing.

Yelp
I got a $10.5 piece of carrot cake, which in my opinion is really hard to mess up. The inside was raw and soft, pretty much only the frosting was edible, and not even yummy. Very disappointed!

Yelp
I hate leaving bad reviews, but the service first off was awful... the " barista" didn't know what a macchiato was or a latte. The coffee tasted like the last cup of coffee that's been sitting in the old coffee machine forever during night shift. I asked for a 2 large coffees and a small kids cocoa. Their larges are what any other coffee spot would consider a small and I paid $17.17. I didn't drink my coffee it truly tasted awful. I ended up calling Moondog cafe and bakery, I left a voicemail waited all day never got a call back so I called again and someone answered they said they'd relay the message to the owner (who had stepped out) and I still never got a call back. I have only asked for my money back from a restaurant once (literally 9 years ago) and I was going to do the same with this awful experience. But never got a call back so here we are. Literally gas station coffee is better than the moondogs. Everything is extremely over priced. Awful customer service.

Yelp
Good breakfast and dinner. Try the John Wayne if you like burgers. Staff is friendly and helpful

Yelp
Was very excited to try, will not return. Got there before my friends and no one came to ask if I would like something to drink for at least 15 minutes. Ordered the trout toast, I think the potatoes were left over from yesterday (and were cold) the toast was burnt and dry. Friends just got a pastry and they waited and waited and finally had to ask for it again.

Yelp
Well, the staff were friendly and it was a pleasant experience, aside from the food. 'Disclaimer, I'm local and this used to be Absolute Bakery which had the best breakfast menu ever, and was my almost daily go to spot.' This is Mancos Colorado. We don't need tiny fancy dry and linked sausages, with cubed seasoned potatoes. We need real food! This is just another gentrified non hash brown making wanna be fancy place, that's pretty much the same as anywhere else in the world. Reminded me of Flying Star in Albuquerque or hmmm, any other upscale-ish big city joint. It made me sad really, the big mural on the inside back wall is a desert scene with a Tucson vibe. We don't have pueblos here nor huge cacti, this is Southern Ute and Navajo country, but whatever I guess. May as well paint in some tipis while they are at it. HAHAAA! I definitely miss Absolute Bakery and its uniqueness, its small town feel, its hash browns and farm fresh meats, and its small town charm. I'm sure tourists will be happy. I doubt I'll be giving it another chance. Just FYI you can get an awesome $7 breakfast burrito at the Fencepost food truck across the street.

Yelp
Our first visit since it's been sold and renovated but I had been many times before. To say that I was impressed is an understatement! The decor is beautiful, menu is enhanced and better, the pastry selection beautiful and delicious! I own a bakery/cafe in Texas and so I had to try all the pastries, loved them! The only negative might be the croissant on my sandwich. they weren't flaky but truthfully no one cares if the food is great! Kudos to new owners for taking a great place and making it better! The prices are fine as well! It costs a lot to make this product, especially if it's scratch made!

Yelp
Great service. Beet pasta was delicious but chuncks of beet would have made this dish exceptional. Portobello salad was perfect. The chocolate bomb is decadent. Vegan fruit tart is light and tasty. While here, grab you favorite croissants for breakfast. You will be in heaven.

Tracy D.

Yelp
We stopped for breakfast this morning. We waited 15 minutes for the server to take our order. Then had to ask again for our coffee. Several people that came in after us were served their food while we continued to wait. We had been in the restaurant about 45 minutes at that point so my husband went up to the counter and asked about our order. They said they'd check but then never said another word to us. Five minutes later we walked out.

Trisha E.

Yelp
Far stretch from absolute. the croissant was good, but not worth the price. there was a hair in my breakfast, and the manager, a long haired kid in perhaps his late twenties, seemed not to care. After my polite complaint about the hair, I overheard him call me a 'bad customer' from the back of the kitchen. Very disrespectful, especially from someone who claimed to be a manager or owner. Management seems more concerned with profit than community. Won't be returning.

Eric B.

Yelp
Sure miss the old place (ABC).Food was ok, service is friendly and the coffee is less than stellar. Sure wished they would have kept a very similar menu as the hash browns and pancakes were amazing.

Linda J.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious. I had The Frenchman (Colorado LambBurger). Perfectly cooked. Dressed with tomato and arugula. Delicious crispy fries. Delicious ice tea. Attentive staff. Setting is cast and inviting. Must try if you are sw Colorado.

Vickery H.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic breakfast. Our family was doing a day trip to Mesa Verde and we stopped here on recommendation and everything was fantastically. We split the Shakshuka and Brioche French Toast. Both were very very good. Service was very friendly and helpful. Atmospheres was funky and cool. Worth making the trip and will definitely come back.

Yelp
I had the Huevos Rancheros on Sept. 12, 2024; it is my favorite breakfast! I have enjoyed them from Portland Oregon to Tucson to Montana. I certainly realize everyone's concept of this dish may be a bit different, depending on geography. However, my serving had dry, stale corn tortillas, with a scant serving of salsa (no reason not to be a bit generous here...). The beans were pulverized and were presented in a dish. However, I was only provided a fork! So it was a bit difficult to extracate the beans from their dish! The eggs were perfectly prepared sunny side up. The service was excellent and the ambience is quite enjoyable. I might suggest revisiting the prepping of this dish...

Hazel C.

Yelp
The food was decent...but i wish there were more options. I definitely miss the old bakery's food and dessert options. Has very good service. Very expensive for a small town bakery especially when you take elderly and high schoolers into consideration....I wouldn't go back.

Charles C.

Yelp
Moondog Cafe has fantastic food. We took our dog and knew we would have to sit on their outside patio. The manager advised that due to staffing challenges they couldn't wait on us outside , but if we ordered as takeout they would make certain we were taken care of. So we ordered at the takeout counter and Voila! Delicious food shortly appeared at our outside table with a smile. Their pastries and cookies rival anything I've ever seen in a European pastry shop, my wife had a regular breakfast (bacon , eggs, potatos , toast ) and it was fresh and well prepared. Their "breakfast potatos" are excellent, big crispy well seasoned cubes. Croissants are unbelievable, our friend had a creme brûlée croissant which was decadent. Anyway, I don't get some of the negative reviews, this place could hold its own in any big city. To find it in tiny Mancos is odd but wonderful. Wish we lived in Mancos!
