Ah moonshiner how I love thee. Seriously, I like you enough to take a trip past the Bastille which is not my favorite part of town (yeah yeah the Marais is over there too, I get it; its not the 6th just sayin'). The quick jaunt up Boulevard Richard Lenoir, was absolutely worth my while in the end because it lead me to your (hidden) doors.
Walking into the pizza joint that houses this speakeasy is worth the trip in itself. Turns out the guys who run the bar also run the shop, and they take their dough as seriously as they take their cocktails; everything is local, everything is fresh, and every seat in the place is taken. They must be doing something right, because the place is hopping with locals. I wasn't hungry (...did not run past the piazza for a drink, I DO NOT have a drinking problem), so I made my way up to the fridge doors and let myself into the back. Most speakeasies have a fake door that lets you into a "hidden" room in the back, Moonshiner takes it (an awesome) step further. The door actually lets you into the walk-in fridge for the pizza place, dough, tomatoes, it's all there. As it turns out the walk in was more than just decorative for me; the back bar is hot. Like Africa in the middle of the summer hot - I was sweating horribly; this is not a good look for an American sitting amongst the properly dressed (and not sweating) Parisians*.
The bar itself was dimly lit and full of groups enjoying superbly handmade cocktails. We were lucky enough to pull a seat at the bar, where we were greeted by a bartender who spoke English with a perfect New York accent, I felt right at home (he said he had never left France, but had a great teacher haha). I ordered up a perfectly made gin fizz that had a hint of mint and raspberry, this was served to me in a frosted aluminum glass that kept it exceptionally cold in the sweltering heat of the bar. Good stuff. We chatted with our psuedoAmerican bartender for a round or two, hand a laugh at the smoking lounge*, and let the time pass by in a truly unique Parisian bar.
This place is absolutely worth checking out, just make sure to bring a few euros (its pricey), and maybe a fan and a towel.
