A Phone Call with My Ex-Bar-Owner Father:
Dad (calling from Ohio): So what are your plans tonight?
Me: Oh, we're trying out this new place in Williamsville.
Dad: What's it called?
Me: Moor Pat.
Dad: *pause* That is seriously the stupidest name for a bar I've ever heard.
Me: It's M-O-O-R P-A-T. Like, "taproom" backwards.
Dad: Still the stupidest name I've ever heard.
I couldn't argue with him. Until Moor Pat is a more established venue with wider recognition, I'll cringe and feel lame telling my friends where I'm going. Seriously, "Moor Pat" sounds like someone with broken English asking for favors at a strip club. Or a dog begging for pets in a stupid dog voice.
But once you get past the name and the door, things get a whole lot better. It was crowded, which was to be expected at the nicest, newest bar on Main Street. The beer list is fantastic. Like its sister establishment, Blue Monk, Moor Pat has a constantly rotating selection of pretty awesome brews. Ballast Point had taken over the night we visited, which was a nice surprise. Their beer list updates so quickly that they've resorted to relying on their mobile site/app for an updated list of their offerings.
Service was FANTASTIC. The bartenders were friendly and just awesome in general. So was the Post-It Party in the bathroom. Unfortunately, one of the Post-It's got stuck on the bottom of my boot and came off on my boyfriend's passenger-side floor. Also unfortunately, the note read "Dan has a big D." Under any other circumstances, this could have turned into a very awkward confrontation.
Moor Pat has a very limited food list, so don't plan on going for dinner. The Weisswurst on a Bretzel that we shared was pretty delicious, as were the fries, but the price and lack of seating makes eating there more difficult than it's worth.
The only other downside of Moor Pat is what I call a "Buffalo problem." I'm not used to paying more than, like, $5 for a beer. So I gave my tab receipt a side-eyed glare when it was handed to me. In the future, this is how I picture Moor Pat factoring into my Friday evenings on Main Street:
1) Go somewhere for dinner and 1-2 drinks
2) Go to Moor Pat for some delicious, amazing beers.
3) Once I get tipsy, walk somewhere else and enjoy cheaper brews.
Overall, I'm very excited for Moor Pat to be more widely recognized (which it will be) so I don't have to feel so ashamed every time I tell friends where I'm going.
