The Best Philly Cheesesteaks in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"Owner Tom Amick may cringe at patrons asking for a “Philly” cheesesteak, but Pennsylvania transplants in Rip City flock to the unconventional food cart oasis off Southeast Division for confidently grilled sliced steak on soft, slightly sweet Amoroso’s rolls. Cheese options include American, provolone, Swiss, or Cheez Whiz. Grab a Northwest beer or cider on tap from the main cart, or an espresso drink at the adjoining coffee stand owned by Amick’s son-in-law. The eclectic dining space is covered but open air, with an occasional wood fire burning on colder days." - Nathan Williams

The Regulations That Helped Grow Portland’s Explosive Food Scene | Eater Portland

"I watched Tom Amick and his family turn an empty alley parking lot off Southeast Division into Moore Food & Co., a beautiful outdoor community pod offering coffee, beer on tap, and East Coast–style cheesesteaks, and heard him note how Portland’s relatively cheap liquor licensing (he paid $800) made that kind of project feasible." - Jonathan Walker

Food Cart Moore Food & Co. Serves Cheesesteaks in a SE Portland Alley | Eater Portland

"Hidden behind the carts, the entire outdoor space was built by Tom Amick and his family and feels like a laid-back, all-day backyard hangout: hanging lanterns, a chess set, mismatched chairs, hanging strawberry plants and a distinctly nostalgic, ‘2002-Portland’ aesthetic give it spontaneous, Old Portland charm without feeling contrived, and the service has a you’re-already-a-regular warmth that makes it feel like a family living room rather than a commercial patio." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Bill Oakley’s Guide to Dining in Portland | Eater Portland

"I’m planning to go to Moore Food & Company more often — there’s a food cart that moved in near Atlas Pizza on Division serving excellent cheesesteaks, the setup is gorgeous, and even with no press it’s pretty packed, so it feels like it will become my lunchtime hangout." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

I went for the weekend Breakfast Club that happens from 9-12 and enjoyed the bacon breakfast sandwich. It was delicious! Perfectly runny egg, crispy bacon and a soft, warm poppyseed roll. I wish I had added hash browns! The atmosphere is SO COZY! It was a drizzly morning when I went, and it was so cozy under the heaters. I kinda wanted to just hang out and sip coffee all morning. There are several areas to hang out, a little couch/fire pit area, a cozy corner with cushy chairs, picnic style tables and seating at the bar.

We’ve been meaning to write this review for a long time, but after another amazing visit today, we couldn’t wait another minute! The atmosphere is amazing, the people are great and the food is out of this world. I had the cheesesteak with all the extras and I’m currently writing this review, savoring each bite just to make this experience last longer. Get your butts over here, you won’t regret it!

Google
Great Philly cheese steaks served on Amoroso's rolls with American, Provolone, Swiss, or Kraft Cheese Whiz. I love it with grilled onions and hot peppers. Cool vibe in the covered seating area. Street parking is limited. Check out my profile for more great eateries and cocktail bars. -VanPort Insider

Fantastic all over. Real cheesesteaks made the right way. The pork roll was the best I've ever had. Fun environment really cool alley vibe decorated in a really good way. Decent drink selection. I will be back for sure.

Google
Very nice place to eat and hang out! Second time here so far. The philly cheese steaks are fantastic! They can also be made pretty dang spicy. I love their french fries too. The staff is friendly and there's a cozy semi-ourdoor area to enjoy your meal.

Google
Great vibe. Great staff. Hard to spot from the street so keep your eyes open. The egg rolls wraps are a stroke of inspiration. We literally added some eggroll wrappers to our grocery list to recreate some of the fun of the buffalo chicken egg roll at home.

Google
Been maybe ten times over the years. The cheesesteak is legit. Amoroso's bread. Check. Real Cheez Whiz. Check. One of my favorite things about this cart is I don't have to subtract anything. "Cheesesteak with whiz." Is there anywhere else in town where you can order a cheesesteak and just get bread, steak, and cheese? Never been to Philly, but I've had more than my fair share of this sandwich. It does the basics right. Highly recommend the Monte Cristo egg rolls. Syrup and preserves on the side. It's sort of perfect. Owner, please don't ever remove it from the menu. :) They have a very cool covered outdoor space, and the staff has always been kind. Dog friendly. I've only had my orders to go, but it's a nice atmosphere. Check the photos. It's very Portland in the best way. Prices are reasonable. Depending on time and day, you may have to park a couple blocks away.

Google
I love the atmosphere! --- food--- Mofo burger ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - imagine a good McDonald's burger Philly cheese steak with mushrooms ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - seems like the thing to order! But I liked the burger more. It was probably just a personal preference. Monte Cristo spring roll ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - like the two sauces it came with - definitely heavy - definitely drunk person food Philly cheese steak spring roll ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ - fun experience and I like the sauce - unsure if I'd reorder, a little salty for me - drunk person food ---drinks --- Peach berry cider ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Yelp
Yum!! Philly Cheesesteak and other goodies Heaven.....solid food, chill vibe with great personable service. Tucked behind businesses on Division after walking through a breezeway, they have a sign on the sidewalk out front...solid spot.

Yelp
Breakfast club at Moore Food and Co is a solid weekend choice. The Pork roll and sausage breakfast sandwiches are exactly what you need. Their cheesesteaks are also in my top 3 for the city though I wish onions and peppers weren't extra. Also don't sleep on the buffalo chicken egg rolls. Big fan of this laid back spot tucked in an alley off division.

Yelp
Atmosphere: Amplified food truck. They have a bar there with some seats as well and a little bar area to enjoy a drink if you'd like Food: Best cheesesteak I've had in Portland (not saying much). Ample enough amount of meat but they kind of skimped on the cheese. Overall though, I'll be returning here for my cheesesteak needs while I continue to try the rest around town. Price: For a cheesesteak in Portland, the price was commendable. You'll never find them as cheap out here as in Philly but I guess I have to accept that Service: Standard Parking: Street parking

Yelp
Love this delightful outdoor space. It's heated so don't be shy. Super authentic Cheesesteak with bread flown in from Philadelphia where both Pat's and Gino's in Philadelphia uses. I promise you won't be dissatisfied. The meat is thin and melts in your mouth with the delicious cheese whiz. Even tried the Cheesesteak egg rolls tonight. Stuffed with meat and cheese, they came two to the order.

Yelp
While cheesesteaks is the main thing on their menu, I opted for a patty melt which was excellent -- just the right size, good amount of meat and plenty of onions and melted cheese. It also came with fries, so overall great bang for your buck at $12. I also got the berry cider which was tasty as well. Staff was super friendly and quick to churn out orders. The seating area is a covered patio/picnic table area, so not immune to the elements, but decent when the weather is nice. Follow the sign for Moore Food to find the food truck area down the alley and behind the building, it was a tad hard to spot initially, but easy to find once we saw the sign.

Yelp
best sandwich in my bitchass life if u dont eat here u dont even like food. the hamburger with fried onions is so good i wish i had a second stomach so i could eat it twice
google avatar

Yelp
Kinda a cool place tucked away between two buildings. Didn't eat but enjoyed a delicious beer and the company of a couple regulars. Has a Philly vibe as evidenced by the large"I hate Steven singer sign"
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
The cheesesteaks and chicken cheesesteaks at this place in are the best I've had here in Portland! Since I'm from Philly, it's like a taste of home!
google avatar

Scott S.

Yelp
Had the cheesesteak with provolone, onions, and mushrooms. The ingredients are pretty good however the flavor wasn't anything special. Next time I'd probably add the hot peppers and change up the cheese. The space itself is really fun being tucked away in the alley with a multiple seating options. I ordered it to to go due to the windy/rainy weather however while waiting there and some solid wind gusts passing over the space was very comfortable. The rain and wind was blocked and they had some heaters going. There is a fire pit as you enter but that area is more exposed. In the end - Really enjoy the space but would get a cheesesteak elsewhere if that's what I was only going for.

Yelp
Best burger I'd had since last April! Great, friendly service! A food cart like no other!

Yelp
TL;DR: get the Italian Hoagie - wow Order: - Italian Hoagie (MVP 5/5): surprise "special sh!t" of the day, the Italian Hoagie had the right balance of vinegar in the sauce/dressing and savoriness from the cold cuts. The shredduce and tomatoes provided the freshness. Great sandwich - Wings (3/5): good but small and not special - Fries (4/5): how can you hate fries :) The beer selection was pretty good and really enjoyed the laid back atmosphere! Great cozy location for a larger group to grub and hang Cheers, Moore Food!

Yelp
The only real deal steak in Portland! The owner must be from PA because this is the way it's done!

Yelp
I love cheesesteaks, but I like chicken cheesesteaks, which are harder to find. So I was so excited to see they not only have a traditional chicken, they have a Buffalo chicken one too. Overall: these are good, but I've had better (although not in PDX). For me the weakest part is the bread. It's thick, and not quite soft enough and dried out the overall sandwich. It held up well, but too well - I don't mind a mess if the bread has the nice soft texture that absorbs all the grease and cheese. Would also like a mix of hot and sweet peppers, they only have hot. But the chicken and provolone and mushrooms were great. That said, this little food cart space is super cute, homey, AND COVERED. With a nice tap list. I would come back just for a beer when shopping in the neighborhood.

Yelp
Easily the best Philly cheese steaks in the city of failed cheese steaks. Great live music. You gotta pay attention and find it. It's a hidden gem on 36th and division. Will most definitely be back.

None Y.

Yelp
Bang up solidly awesome sandwiches, speedy cook times. Staff seem like good folks. Probably the nicest interior space of any food cart in town, you feel like you've stepped into a magical caravan. And an adorable mascot dog, who I only wish I was allowed to give treats to Also, I wish they also offered a smaller size of fries, although I can see how it could be a pain in the ass.

Yelp
I have now made my third visit, and have a few things to add: first, I think the fried onions are a must-have on the cheesesteaks. Second, the people I brought along on my last visit tried the hot peppers add-on, and the word is that they are quite spicy, which will make some people happy and others forewarned. A benefit of going with others is that I also got to try the buffalo chicken egg rolls. I had never ordered them before, because I rightfully suspected that fried and spicy would be an excellent combination, but wouldn't be the kind of thing that I would crave very often. They were beautifully prepared, had a nice combination of crunch on the outside and chewiness inside (like a Gary Larson igloo), and the spice level was high enough to get your attention, but mild enough to still be edible. I highly recommend that everyone try them, to see if they're your new thing. I also got to try the fries on this trip - somewhere between shoestring and Jojo. Really good, and they'll be a must have if I can ever bring myself to order a burger instead of the cheesesteak.

Yelp
Jawn- noun DIALECT*US (chiefly in eastern Pennsylvania) used to refer to a thing, place, person, or event that one need not or cannot give a specific name to. If you're from the Philly area then you grew up with this term, if not, then you're gonna learn something new. Growing up in Jersey, I went to Philly a bunch and an am Eagles fan too boot, but I didn't know the word Jawn because it wasn't a part of my vocab. Not to say that other phrases from Philly didn't leak into how I spoke. I didn't learn of the word until I lived in Texas. Believe me, this will lead to why Moore food is a great place to go. There is a sticker, on a pole at Moore food with Princess Diana in an Eagles jacket with the word Jawn. The sticker is from Brian at Lombard House, another Philly native. The Moore family are as well. Philly people. A Yuenglings coaster is also tacked to the same pole. Philly people, Philly food. Unfortunately, no Philly beer. Amoroso's rolls since 1904 will light up your tastebuds with calorie laden cheesesteaks and pork roll sandwiches. All guilty pleasures. Whiz. Well seasoned steak fries and a good selection of local beer and their version of a michelada with Clamato juice. On this occasion, was their first live show. Glass of Hearts, a Blondie cover band. Good tunes! The goal of Tom, the owner, is to get some live music into this outdoor covered space periodically but keep it to tamer forms of music, especially with neighbors so close. You'll still get a good cross section of what PDX has to offer, just not the harder stuff. For a first show, it turned out pretty good. Good band, good sound, and enough people were crammed into this back alley area that is was fun. So, come down to Division, come to this back alley area with two carts, one food and beer, one for coffee and enjoy the atmosphere and the great Philly food. Get your jawn on. Enjoy and support local!

Yelp
Moore Food is my favorite thing to eat in all of Portland and I simply will not eat a cheesesteak anywhere else. Once I found this true to taste Philly Cheesesteak, which is the closest thing I can find to actual Philly Cheesesteaks I have been a fan ever since. The front end staff knows me and my family and is always friendly, hell I have even got the owner/cook to soften up at times. When my family visits from California this is the only thing they must eat every visit.

Yelp
I mostly was just planning to explore somewhere new and then was pleasantly surprised by just what I needed for a Friday evening. All the staff were super friendly and made me feel welcome. I'm from South Jersey and have very specific cheesesteak standards. Moore Food fulfilled these too infinity and beyond. I got a chicken cheesesteak with fried onions. Every bite was a bite of home like a big warm hug on a spring evening. Th bread was magically fresh for an Amoroso roll that travelled far. The filling was all just right with every bite blending wonderfully along with flavorful provolone. I look forward to coming for many years to come. I didn't think it'd be possible to have a true taste of home out here and am glad to have found it through Moore.
google avatar

Kurt V.

Yelp
Excellent outdoor ambiance with capable heaters and a cozy "living room". I loved my sando and it was a fair price for a Philly. I'll definitely return.
google avatar

Rachel P.

Yelp
The Best Cheesesteak in PDX, hands down. The bread is shipped in from Philly so if you don't like it you don't like Philadelphia style cheesesteaks. Get it with Cheeze Whiz for an authentic taste. The staff are so nice and the beer/cider selection is great. We love the micheladas! It is out door but it's tucked back in an alley covered and heated so enjoy it year round treat. Don't sleep on this place!!!
google avatar

Kristen K.

Yelp
A true hidden gem! My friends and I were browsing through some of the shops on SE Division when we spotted the bright corner of a food truck down a little alley and decided to check it out. What a pleasant surprise! Tucked away behind the buildings was a spacious area with a food truck, fire pit, and bar! Not only were the food and drinks great, but the best part was the ambiance and decor! There's a spacious outdoor seating area with a cover from the rain that provides soft, diffused lighting. There are heaters and a fire pit. There's a variety of seating options and an eclectic mix of decor ranging from retro camping lanterns on each table, flickering Moroccan lanterns hanging from the roof, a wooden chess set, dark iron ceiling fans, a verdant succulent wall, and a huge map of Middle Earth. It almost felt like a little "post-apocalyptic tavern," like if the world fell apart and put itself together for a cozy drink with friends. It's also dog-friendly and kid-friendly! The only thing missing was a bathroom. (Perhaps there was one that I missed?) I definitely recommend that you stop by the next time you're on Division. It was a really lovely experience and my friends and I (seasoned Portland dwellers) were still very impressed.

Yelp
Let's start with the obvious- these cheesesteaks are phenomenal. Plenty have written about that. Why do I go almost weekly? The Breakfast Club. Casey is a master of the breakfast pork roll- they're only served Saturday and Sunday mornings right now. If you follow on the gram, you might see an occasional Wednesday in there too. The egg always has a runny yolk and the Kaiser rolls are little poppy seed ladened clouds. I get mine SPK (salt, pepper, ketchup) and it's always a perfect amount of ketchup that doesn't take over. The hashbrowns are the "Golden Arches" kind, but so much better- crispy and salty outside and creamy inside. All this goes with Billy's coffee in the big slug bug in the same spot- Moore Coffee. He gets his own review, but I'm saying don't make coffee before you come here. The ambience is incredible here- fun decorations to look at, heaters and covered patio so you can even enjoy on a cold rainy morning, great music, cartoons are on, and a giant tapestry of the map of Middle Earth. Don't just order and run- this place really does well at being savored.
google avatar

Marty H.

Yelp
Excellent beer; amazing cheese steaks and steak fries. Occasional weekend evening entertainment. Great place to hang and meet people in the hood.
google avatar

Tim E.

Yelp
I've read many reviews of this place as being as close to Philly as you can get in this town. I have never been there, I don't know the standard. But although tasty, my sandwich seemed dry and too bready. My best cheesesteak remains the greasy gutbomb I got in New Jersey in 1992 at a pizza place. This was really just okay. Off day? I've had better.
google avatar

Mag M.

Yelp
Keeping in mind that this is a foodcart, this is probably one of the most cozy and comfortable food cart environs. Protected from sun, rain and wind - should be comfy all seasons. Good taplist of beer. Friendly owners/staff. I'm not a cheesesteak expert or officianodo, but I do like seeking 'em out and comparing. So, I guess I'm like a minor league cheesesteak guy? I'm fat, so that's gotta add credibility. Anyway, best cheesesteak I've had in town, hands down. Maybe best ever? Soft, pillowy bread, several cheese options, availability of onions, mushrooms and peppers helps you customize a great sammich. Check 'er out!

Yelp
Yesterday afternoon I had been on Yelp searching for somewhere new to grab dinner. I came across Moore Food and when I saw they had cheesesteaks, I was sold. I am a sucker for a cheesesteak. I absolutely love them. And I have tried damn near everywhere in Portland. And before tonight, I did have a favorite spot that I went to every couple weeks. But gosh darnit... if Moore Food's cheesesteak didn't blow me away, I would be lying! It was PERFECT and... my new favorite. It all starts with the bread. The holy amoroso hoagie roll. It was soft and light, which to me, is key. It also held up extremely well to ALL the steak they piled on. I got mine with american cheese, fried onions, and mushrooms. I also ordered the steak fries and they were equally awesome. Crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside. Boyfriend ordered a pork roll and loved it as well! Also, aside from amazing food. This back alley has just completely transformed and is now such an awesome spot to hang out. Even if you don't want to get food, they have beer and wine and the atmosphere is so fun! We played checkers while we waited and it really added to the whole experience!

Michael H.

Yelp
excellent people working behind the scenes and behind the bar. food is consistently great and creative, tap selection is wonderful

Andrea C.

Yelp
This is my happy place. Love their cheesesteaks. Always consistently amazing and the environment is just as good.

Yelp
Yes yes.. mmm .. great cheesesteak. This place has good reviews and it's because they make great cheesesteak

Yelp
Incredible food and booze and the atmosphere is unreal. I felt like I was in 2019 as well.

Yelp
Pleasant comfy atmosphere. Tasty sandwiches. Friendly counter person. Had to drop a star for grumpy cook who should probably not initiate interactions with customers.

Ashlie W.

Yelp
Cute lil place with awesome food and great service. We got the Philly Cheesesteak and the Buffalo eggs rolls and I will be back to get them again!! The vibe and set up is a great place to chill and hangout!
google avatar

Janesa C.

Yelp
Hands down best Philly cheesesteak I have found in Portland, and we spent all summer looking.

Kirstie R.

Yelp
Damn good cheesesteak! I've never been to Philly but I think that these real deal. And if they are not, then I don't want to hear about it. Great service, delicious food & drink (a perfect selection of taps and bottles) and the coolest little hidden alle way tricked out with a map of Middle Earth, a wood carving of Raphael (TMNT) and a projector of Bob Ross playing in a loop. Moore Alley, you had me at cheesesteak.

Richard H.

Yelp
Great ambiance. Casual, interesting, comfortable. Just loved it and loved being there
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome food, coffee and atmosphere. Perfect for outside hangout with friends. Fire pit, covered seating, chess table, outside bar, it's got everything.
google avatar

Morgan S.

Yelp
Legit Cheesesteaks! Tom is the owner of the cart and from Philly. Awesome menu and the outdoor covered space is beautiful. I highly recommend.
google avatar

Eric B.

Yelp
A correct cheesteak, great service, great tucked away spot. To top it off they have pork roll and cheese on a kaiser. Go here.
google avatar

C J.

Yelp
We went here for our first date night as new parents. I liked the atmosphere, perfect for a date but could easily see myself bringing the kid and our dogs. They offer a nice tap list. We had the cheese steak, smash burger, monte cristo egg roll and steak fries. All were delicious but the egg roll was SO good. The service was quick and the bartender was friendly, made for a great night.

Bryan B.

Yelp
Amazing little spot off the main road. Great beer selection, cheesesteaks and crazy egg rolls and pork roll sandwiches. What more could you want? Other than the seating area lit with Moroccan lamps and a map of middle earth. If you don't come here...well...idk that there's any help for you

Tim L.

Yelp
Bummer. Had heard good things but the menu board is frankly a turn off. I don't want to be thinking about sh*t while I eat my sandwich.

Yelp
We had so much fun at Moore Food last night! What they've created back there in that alleyway off of Division is nothing short of genius. In basic terms, it's a food cart, but yet it's so much Moore! (get it?) They've cleverly and attractively expanded the space to include a bar (with about a dozen tap beers and ciders), a selection of beer garden-style tables, and some comfortable lounge seating clusters. If that's not enough, there's also a fire pit, a chess table and a a vintage coffee truck (van, actually). The food offerings are pretty simple, but that's the point. Keep it simple, and do it well. My husband (educated in Philly) is a self-proclaimed cheesesteak aficionado ("it's gotta have the right roll!"), and he gave this one a double thumbs up. Your only decision is whether to have it with provolone, Swiss, American or CheezWiz. (That's no a typo.) My friend and I both had the smash burger, and it was a delicious, ooey, gooey mess...and I'm not complaining. We hung out for a couple of hours, drinking beer/wine, chatting, watching dogs come and go and enjoying the earthy smell of the firepit. We'll be back for Moore!!

Catherine H.

Yelp
So happy to have Moore Food in the neighborhood :-) we enjoyed the food, drinks, and above all the ambiance. It was the perfect tucked away outdoor dining spot.
