Where to Day Drink in Montreal | Eater Montreal

"One for more of a party crowd, the unpretentious, tongue-in-cheek, and deliberately rustic Moose Bawr pays tribute to Canadian stereotypes through food and drink. Along with the usual suspects (beers both domestic and imported), they have a generous list of sangrias, which are highly recommended for the daytime crowd. It’s a more rowdy spot, all but guaranteed to make a downtown day out a little wilder." - Karin Murray-Bergquist

Google
Great service, very friendly and helpful staff made the drink in a way I requested for. Had a good talk with friends. Good ambience.

Google
Stopped in for drinks two different nights, and loved the relaxed vibe and fun atmosphere. Didn't get a chance to try any of the food, so will have to do that in our next Montreal adventure!

I walked in the place and the stench was so overbearing I had to walk out. It smelt like literal dog crap. I have no idea how anyone can be there and not want to gag. It is too bad because it seemed like it was a cool lil dive bar, which I always love. The beer prices seemed good for the area as well. The smell though! They need to switch cleaning products and start a new cleaning routine.

Was recommended this bar by a friend, and was excited to try it. However, the service was awful, we were served by a someone called Britney I think & she was unpleasant from start to finish. She seemed to have something going on as she was in a bad mood, so I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt, but I was not pleased. The chicken fingers were amazing and the rest of the staff were lively and made up for her lack of attentiveness.

Google
We liked the food (hotdog) and loved the fries, but service was less than the bare minimum!! Honestly, 3-star should be more than enough but we liked the simple menu, the drinks were great but boy oh boy, we had to beg to get someone attention to remind them we're almost finished with dinner and ready to leave but no fries yet, helllloooo!! Fun part wad the 2 gentlemen who looked Tobe owners were standing by the patio, but not paying attention to the customers, like we were just $$ for a good Friday might dash!! Later on,our hostess joined them too, leaning to a tree just by patio chatting, while not a single person helping patio customers! LOL! Good hotdogs (not been BTW) for a casual chat, snack & drinks, but not a place if you expect a bit more attention or a dinner.

Google
We wanted to watch the Champion's League game, and this place was dead. No sports on the TVs and very loud rock music playing. Other places showing the game were packed. Guess they didn't want the business.

Fun Canadian-themed pub with good drinks (beer and cocktails). Went with a couple Americans that have never had poutine. They enjoyed it! Service was excellent.

Google
a Blue Lagoon sangria on a downtown terrace! 😎🍹 Who needs a beach when you’ve got a refreshing mix of vodka, Blue Curaçao, white wine, lemonade, and Sprite? Beach vibes, city style! #StayCool #SummerInTheCity #SipSipHooray

Yelp
Jade was so sweet and friendly, the vibe was dope and drinks were flowing! Had a great time and the food, drinks were very affordable

Yelp
Fun bar, and the beer is cheap. Seriously, $7 for a LITER of Labatt 50? I am looking forward to returning and checking out the rest of the menu!

Yelp
I was walking down the street when I happened to come across this great bar (after telling my friend about it -- I came to find out this is a popular tourist spot). The wings were great and the beer was very well priced as well. My friend and I enjoyed this bar so much we returned back a following day. This bar also gives complimentary popcorn.

Yelp
Nice spot in the heart of Saint Catherine. The patio is perfect, comfy chairs and sturdy tables. The prices are simply unbeatable. A liter of beer for $10, no joke!!!! Food was okay. Good for Pub food. We tried the wings, fries and the "dawg"--hot dog but no bun. Overall, super fun and lively place to hang out and have some drinks. Will definitely be back :)

Yelp
Great bar to go out to with friends! I used to come here on Thursdays after school. Now, I try to come every once in a while mainly because the atmosphere is great and the drinks are really good too. I finally tried their food this time and was surprised at how good it was. For bar food, it was actually quite tasty and fairly priced. I would highly recommend this bar if you're looking for a fun time with some good music, and wanting to watch some sports games on their TVs.

Yelp
I never drink. So when some friends want to go to a bar, I just sit there sipping water and eating the snacks. This review is for all the people that go to bars just to eat. Moose bawr is a very nicely furnished student bar. The menu has awesome cheap prices (fried avocado!) and some interesting poutine choices. I wouldn't recommend ordering any of the poutines but they have very good entrees. The poutines had weird fries and the cheese was cold while the rest of the meal was warm. Very odd. I also really love that they offer free popcorn with seasoning. Best part of my visit. I wouldn't mind tagging along if my friends wanted to go back.

Yelp
This is a place to drink and snack with friends. Beers are super cheap. Although the pitchers of cocktails are filled with too much ice (brainfreeze zzz) I go there only at night, but I saw their lunch specials and want to try definitely. Their fried avocados are good even though it's basic! All the food there are very salty but I think it's purpose is to drink with alcohol haha! I took a big boot beer size. It causes too much stress for me when im holding it because if the glass breaks we have to pay a lot if I remember well but worth the experience! Service is meh, the tables are always sticky and there is few gambling machines near the toilet And there is free popcorn with lots of garniture of your choice (in the back).

Yelp
A repeat spot. Most of the time very crowded and difficult to find a place to sit. I have my Guinness with their fried pickles. They have rather varied menu of poutine. I've tried it twice and is ok. Don't wait to be seated, stick to the fist free spot! A waitress will show up later to get orders. I like the staff here very nice and friendly.

Yelp
Known to have great sangrias, and cheap lunch specials. Came here for lunch and ordered a few of their 4$ lunch specials: the Shakira hot dog, chilli fries, fried Mac and Cheese and the white chicken peach basil sangria! I've had most of their sangrias before, which are all very delicious and quite cheap compared to most places! The food was pretty good, the hot dog is the same as the one from Costco which is good, the fried Mac and Cheese was presented in a very nice way but lacked a little seasoning and the chilli fries were very flavourful! Overall, nice place for cheap lunch and good drinks great!

Yelp
This place is a little far down on St. Catherine's street but is a great place. I went during their cheap eats hours or bargin bites or discounted deliciousness whatever they call it it is very good! I started with sweet potato chips, despite not liking sweet potatoes but in chip form they taste way bettah. The serving was a good size and like I said the chips were delightful. They also have really cheap booze if you are in to that sort of thing which I am. Jager bomb was only $4.50 Canadian eh which is only like $3.51 USD. A real bargin. In fact most of their shots are about $3.51 USD which is cheap for any place in the states except maybe those real Podunk places in the Midwest. They have a good selection of cheap grub including foot long hot dogs (may not be a foot long) but eating dog dogs that large in public makes me a bit bashful so I went for the wings. They have sriacha bbq and miso orange flavored. I didn't know what miso orange was so I used a phony email address to access their wifi to look it up (true story). It sounded good enough so I got both. You get six wings to an order and for only 4 bucks you can afford to waste. I however did no such thing as the wings were great. They both were extremely hot an delicious not unlike any of the ladies who walk the streets of Montreal. After a few drinks and all my food my bill was only about $25 bucks. I left a big tip and the waitress was pretty and nice to me despite my questionable looks. Check this place out. They also have free popcorn and some slot machines if you are feeling a little froggy.

Yelp
I read on Yelp that it was a good student place, and that is a completely fine description. The decor is fun and woodsy, the staff is commited to a rocker image, and their music selection goes from Blink 182 to Motley Crue. Knowing all that, no one would be surprised to find their menu to be all meat and fried food. Their specialty are super fully loaded hot dogs - they are delicious! They have a $4 menu from 11am-1pm (I think?) and honestly you don't need to eat/spend more than that. I really liked their chilli, but the other sides didn't wow me. The fried pickles swam in their oil, and the fried avocados were very bland. Oh well, the free popcorn made up for it!

Yelp
Im part of the Montreal Beer Runnersand this week this was our "run to" pub. A very cool pub with cool and unique food like kimchi poutine and AMAZING avocado fries. They alsi have small but nice beer selection, free popcorn and if you are a sports fan there are big screen broadcasting different events (well when we were there). They onky downside of this cool pub is the noise level. It is very load and hard to have a normal conversation.
google avatar

Brenda A.

Yelp
Okay so this was the first place in Montreal that had Tito's. It's conveniently located and the happy hour menu makes everything super cheap (think $4). The wings were so good, so I got an order of each flavor. I think the orange miso is the better of the two, though. They don't have ranch, so don't bother asking. WiFi works okay.

Yelp
Stunned. Walked out of there after having a meal & one beer and it only cost $11.50 ??? WoW! Shock .. was good & the music was fantastic. Great Energy inside the place

Yelp
I have walked out of this place for the last time. My boyfriend and I came today (Sunday) around 4pm. The weather was nice and we were excited to sit outside and have a beer. The guy at the door seated us outside and thus begun the wait. We were never given a menu. We were never greeted. I waited for 15 minutes. Watched the waiter clear two tables. Watched another waitress take shots with her friends who were seated at the table next to us. Tried to wave and get their attention, but the staff all gave us their backs. I went inside to order at the bar and stood there for 2 minutes (honestly I really time this because it's so nuts to me) and no one even made eye contact with me. This is the third consecutive time this has happened - that I have just left after waiting for an unacceptable amount of time. I live in the neighborhood and want so badly for this to be a go-to spot, but the consistently horrible service is such a turn off. And I'd like to think that the management would read this, and the other reviews that complain about the wait time, and take us into consideration, but sadly I don't think they'll bother. It's a shame because it's a great bar for the neighborhood.

Yelp
A Yelp event led me to this new resto located on St-Catherine's street where we hung out for a few hours within their open terrace. I was undecided to either go for their poutine or their sausages so I compromised and finally ordered a poutine + bacon cheddar sausage. Why live to 40? While we waited, someone at our table ordered some fried pickles and I had a few that was generously shared with the rest of us. Normally, I'm pretty neutral about fried pickles but they were actually very good and the home made honey mustard dipping sauce... was totally something I appreciated. YUMMY! The service was relatively slow and the whole process took a significant amount of time to order some drinks, then to get our drinks, eventually to order our food and finally getting our food. If they could improve on one thing, this would be it. I didn't mind it too much though. I eventually was served my poutine with sausage (check picture for reference) and promptly went into quality assurance mode to see how I liked it.... and I did!!! The fries were just about right, the cheese curds were squeaky and generously spread out, the gravy had a great texture to it with a little kick to it that I liked as well. The bacon cheddar sausage was tasty and I was glad I had it as well. My only complaint is that the gravy wasn't piping hot at first, so the cheese curds on top didn't exactly melt as they should have. However, the more I dug into my meal the better the poutine became with all that gravy that had seeped down and the cheese curds located below were melted and tasted heavenly. The price tag is reasonable. All in all, I had a good time and liked Moose Bawr. I wouldn't mind visiting again one day.

Yelp
Cute place, good sangrias. I felt it was a bit understaffed, the vibes were nice. I would definitely come here again and highly recommend it to others if they don't want to spend a lot and still have a good time. Does anyone know if that is a real hanging on the wall?

Yelp
Went here on a date I met through Bumble! We had such a fun time because the bar played country music the whole night and we both knew all of there lyrics. Even ended up dancing at the end of the night in the middle of the bar. Great beer and great vibes for a Bumble date. Sometimes strong nerves can come up on a first date but we relaxed right away once the tunes started playing :)

Yelp
A local friend recommended Moose Bawr for their great poutine and perfect setting for watching the World Cup without feeling out of place (we were a group of women who don't like rowdy bars and wanted a bit of a classier environment than a regular pub). We LOVED it. Very friendly service, food came out quickly and as expected, and was very tasty! Pitchers of sangria - yes please! We tried their classic poutine and the KIMCHI POUTINE! SO good! Just an fyi - the Kimchi poutine has some sort of seafood in the sauce, so watch out if you have allergies. The Kimchi poutine was probably my poutine thus far as the sauce had a zesty flavor to go along with the cheese curds. Unexpectedly tasty! Try if you like new experiences, or love poutine! We also had their Shakira Dawg - it was very tasty! It comes with tasty sour kraut on the side!! (check out the pics) Highly recommend and wish we'd returned here for the second World Cup game the next day, instead of trying a new bar and being disappointed by bad service and unexciting food options elsewhere. :P Takeaway - glad Moose Bawr opened up. It's a fresh take on a fun bar with great food, friendly service and a nice light environment with big windows and group-friendly high top tables. Check it out if you want good drinks and a nice setting to talk and watch sports.

Yelp
IT HAS POPCORN! Every bar should have popcorn. Amazing staff. Marianne served us on a Saturday night and she was amazing. Went for drinks with the girls and she made sure we had plenty of water and a great time!! Interesting vibe, very Canadian feel, and the drinks were good. Good bar food.

Yelp
Saint thor is ahhhh-mazing :) the cinnamon sticks are just a touch of heaven in the already heavenly place.

Yelp
Went with friends on a Friday night and it was packed! So reasonable and good service! We got beers and got two appetizers. One was avocado fries which I would give 10/10 it was so good and it came with spicy mayo and we got fried mac and cheese which would be a 6/10 because it was too dry, the mac and cheese wasn't too cheesy and it was missing a sauce or something! Portions are huge, and they give free popcorn where you can sprinkle flavours to your own liking. They have a huge variety of sangrias, beers, classic drinks and many kinds of shots! Overall a nice casual place to hang and grab drinks.

Yelp
Oh gosh, where to start. Busy conference day. Eight folks sitting at a table. We order from the quick lunch menu (all things about $4). Most of us order fried stuff or hot dogs. Then the waiting began. Waiting. Waiting. Waiting. More waiting. Risking missing out on the afternoon of talks, we asked the server if the food was coming and if we could take it to go. She insisted that if some were take out, all would be take out. Waiting. Waiting. More waiting. Take out packages delivered. No cutlery. Two people ordered chilli. They received stainless steel spoons. When I finally opened up my prized awaited for lunch - what met my eyes was a smallish hot dog floating in a pool of mustard on a bun. I would have been better off at a sidewalk vendor. In terms of taste - it was dry and lacking. I was greatly disappointed.
google avatar

Yelp
I just give this note for one thing : THE KIMCHI POUTINE Ok we also had a sangria and it was pretty good (and actually really big, don't drink it alone you rebel) So yeah, the poutine. I have to say, I know Kimchi and I like it, but thinking about it on a poutine was... Well, weird. When it was actually in front of me, it was still weird, and it looked weird too. But weirdly enough, that was GOOD. Really good. And fat (of course, it's a poutine) I thought about it last time and I miss it. If I miss it, it only means one thing : Yummy. Weirdly good. Try it.
google avatar

Kelly J.

Yelp
Amazing sangrias, must try as many as possible! Sitting on this terasse in the summer is great no matter what day of the week! It shouldn't be too busy in the earlier days of the week but good luck getting a seat from Thursday-Saturday!
google avatar

Yelp
Talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show-stopping, spectacular, never the same, c -totally unique, completely-not-ever-been-done-Before, bootylicious, beautiful music, impossible-to-beat atmosphere

Yelp
During our 8-day visit, we came to Moose Bawr seven times. SEVEN. FREAKING. TIMES. We didn't have the food, because we didn't come here to eat. We came here to drink, baby, drink. And drink we did. Feeling adventurous? Try playing their coin flipping game and prepare to make the list on the wall. Also prepare to get really, really inebriated. The crowd is young, the drinks are strong and the music is loud. Also, the bartenders rock, especially Charles, Justin and Oscar. Or as I like to call them, the Sobriety Annihilators.
google avatar

Risa D.

Yelp
Great option in the area for playful and creative bar food, tvs, warm woodsy decor. The service was friendly but a little confused and slow. Not bothering to ask new members of our group if they wanted glasses for the giant sangria we'd ordered, just small stuff like that. I'm not big on TVs in bars so this isn't my new favourite place in the world or a fan of distracted service but the kimchi poutine was tasty, cool flavour combo, and there were other tasty sounding things on the menu I'll totally happily go back and try.
google avatar

Madeline C.

Yelp
Came here for a night of drinking with friends. Initially I was annoyed at the service because I was literally pushed out of the way by a server while waiting to be seated, then it took quite a while for anyone to take our orders once we were seated. However, as the night wore on I warmed up to the place due to the very reasonable prices and delicious drinks. Order the cut off your ear shot for a good time (it's absinthe and red bull, but it's shockingly tasty). Fun student vibe. Snag a seat on the terrasse if you can for prime St. Cat's people watching. I'll add that the food looked and smelled quite good although I didn't order any.
google avatar

Christian D.

Yelp
Twice I tried to go there early after the opening (since I work near the place) and twice I have been told they wouldn't be open for at least 15 more minutes (this a few minutes after the opening time written on their door). I tried again this morning and the same thing happenend once more. I won't try another time.
google avatar

E S.

Yelp
The worst service I've ever had in my life. Rude, clumsy, and dishonest. Expect to be double charged and then treated incredibly aggressively in response to your protests that you didn't in fact loose track of your drinks. I should have known better after reading other reviews warning of being man handled by their aggressive bouncers and treated rudely by staff. I am disgusted by my experience at Moosebawr.
google avatar

Val H.

Yelp
Disappointing overall. I had very high expectations by the sounds of the menu & the look of the pictures! Everything sounded interesting and exciting but unfortunately wasn't the case. What we had: - Bloody Caesar (small, ordinary, uneventful) - Kimchi poutine (cheese curds were actually BAD, I was confused by their texture and translucent colour; fries were very overdone; kimchi was the only good part) - Ass On Fire dawg ("just okay" - my husband lacks the words to describe his experience lol) - Messy Something-or-Other dawg (sausage meat itself was lumpy & dry, but the chilli was delicious; on the whole too wet and lacking in flavour of anything other than chilli) Like I said, I had high hopes and was sadly disappointed. We won't be back.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm definitely giving them 4 stars for their insanely affordable alcohol !! It's very very affordable to drink here! Very good for groups extremely busy on the peek hours. Service is ok! They are understaffed in my opinion ;)

Yelp
I've been here on multiple occasions, and at different times of the day. Moose Bawr, in general is a fun place to go, it's very lively and busy, and lots of good drinks! the bartenders are great, approachable, and makes an awesome old fashioned (hard to find!)!! They also have some pretty good comfort food options too! especially if you like hot dogs! there's like 10 different styles of hot dogs with all sorts of crazy toppings! Some of them you wouldn't think they mix, but sure enough they were delicious! If you ask me, the only downside to Moose Bawr is the fact that it's SO busy! Going there even on a weeknight can be pretty busy, no open seats and sometimes even a line outside. The wait for service during those times also can be a little slow. It also gets pretty loud inside, so it's not a good place if you want to have a quiet night or a first date where you might want to get to know your tinder match or what nots. That said, if you go in the afternoon, even on a weekend, it's not particularly busy or loud and you can enjoy the drinks and food as much as you like! The decor is also very warm, mostly wood, feels almost like being inside a cabin, which is pretty sweet in the middle of downtown! All in all, this is probably one of my go to bars, but i probably don't go as often because of the frequent wait lines...
google avatar

Katerina B.

Yelp
I usually do go out in that part of town often, but this was a pleasant discovery. The bar atmosphere does have a student vibe, that being said, it's worth visiting this place. They have a free pop corn machine, where you can get your complimentary pop corn while you wait for your food or drinks. Their chicken wings are delicious and I'm a big chicken wing expert, it was a perfect combination of sauce and all the right ingredients, not too much and not too little. Sipping your beer and eating the wings while having a fun conversation with friends, what could be better?
google avatar

Gab A.

Yelp
Rude service, especially from the aggressive bouncer, who had no respect for our group of paying clients. The food was served 45 minutes after it was ordered, and it wasn't tasty. I don't recommend this place at all.
google avatar

Julia D.

Yelp
Moose Bawr is fairly new and very conveniently located. It's a small bar with a very limited menu that basically consists of sausage sandwiches and fries. I've come twice now and wasn't really blown away by it either time. It wasn't that it was terrible it just left me feeling underwhelmed. Service was also a little on the slow side. It was hard to get the waiter's attention and it took a while to do things like place our order. The second time around I actually tried the food here. I went for the regular poutine. You can add sausage to it for an additional fee which I did opting to add cheddar-bacon sausage on top. The sausage was good but I felt that the poutine could have been more salty since it was kind of bland. This is definitely a bar where you go for beer. Their sangria is good but I wasn't really a fan of the mojito I tried. They have a pretty good beer selection looking at the menu. Prices are in line with other bar. Like I said this place doesn't blow me away. I'd probably come back but I wouldn't make an effort to come here.
google avatar

Shelvin S.

Yelp
For stumbling upon this place, we loved it. The drinks were inexpensive, and the food was great. The wings here are pretty awesome (they serve it by the 'baker's dozen it seems). The portions here are quite large. The servers are very friendly, and they check in multiple times, whether you've been served or not, so overall the chances of being served quickly are high. The only drawback is that the bar tabs are apparently separate from the table tab, a bit unusual, but not too significant. The time between ordering and delivery is average, and they do charge for sauces (including ketchup). Overall, check it out, especially evenings. Their poutine has been featured, and the gravy is made using a duck base. It's a great poutine, although it's topped with green onions (which I'm sure can be opted out); poutine score: 3.5/5

Yelp
A nice Sunday afternoon and you want to enjoy one of their sangrias, but the music is so loud, you can't even enjoy a conversation with your friends.
google avatar

Tommy M.

Yelp
A preppy college vibe bar in downtown Montreal with mostly young people here. The bar is not that big and it gets crowded quite a bit especially on hockey game nights. This bar is sometimes not for me when it gets too preppy douchey like. I fit it with more shady people. lol
google avatar

Kassidy K.

Yelp
This place has a cool environment going on, with giant wooden tables to sit at, a huge moose head on the wall, even the menu looked super cool before I even opened it. I ordered a pint of cider and it came in a boot!! Wicked. I also ordered some deep fried pickles for a small snack. They were good, but I strongly suggest sharing them because after you eat too many pickles your mouth starts to feel funny... My bad ;) The service was good and quick, the only downside was their bathrooms... Either I couldn't figure them out or they just didn't lock also they were lacking major toilet paper. Overall this seems like a pretty sweet place to chill with your friends, it's also close to school so ... bonus :)
google avatar

Tyler W.

Yelp
Great atmosphere. Awesome staff, cheap drinks, music is really good. You gotta check it out.
google avatar

James R.

Yelp
Not tourist friendly. Two seats opened at the bar and he "reserved" one of them for one of his friends. Bad customer service and the patrons are not fun.
google avatar

Christie D.

Yelp
My favorite bar in Montreal The sangria and poutine are the bomb Amine is my favorite bar tender! Best sangria in my opinion : Pinka, and Peach Basil.
google avatar

Emmy B.

Yelp
A cool local bar that had friendly staff and a chill atmosphere. Their playlist was mostly 90s alternative music which was a big plus for us. My partner really enjoyed the black velvet. We weren't sure what to order so the bartender suggested the Moose Platter, which has avocado fries, fried sausage bites, fried Mac and cheese, fried pickles, and chili... the kind of delicious food you can only justify eating on a drunken night out. The portions were huge and the food was greasy but really good. If I lived in the area this would be a bar that I'd visit more regularly.
google avatar

Natasha A.

Yelp
Kimchi poutine. EAT IT. Sassy menu. Will be back! Only complaint was poor service, holidays though so probably understaffed, understandable. This is NOT the place for intimate conversation! Avoid on game night, unless of course you are looking for a place to watch the game. ;)
google avatar

Nicolas A.

Yelp
I have been living in the area for a little while and been several times. If you can deal with slow service as mentioned previously and you are with a small group of friends for a lively chill night then this is the spot for you. There's a mixed young crowd in here and the free popcorn with decently priced alcohol makes this a meh, not bad place to mingle with friends.

Gray L.

Yelp
Great place to hangout with friends. The sangrias are affordable and taste great (I tried a few) and their poutine is also pretty tasty! They offer FREE popcorn which is a bonus lol I would totally recommend friends to go there!
