Not Your Nonna's Pasta - Review - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Not Your Nonnas is a carryout-only spot focusing on pasta meal kits. The menu rotates weekly and is filled with the kind of pasta you’re (probably) not making when left to your own devices. For example, they have tortellini stuffed with burrata, prosciutto, and sun-dried tomatoes or smoked paprika fagotinni filled with Cajun-spiced shrimp and served with chimichurri. Everything is prepared in small batches, and if you want to know what the chef is making that week, you need to DM or email to find out. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Team Infatuation

We stopped by this place for lunch and tried two types of pasta — I had the pesto and my husband got the meat sauce one. The meat sauce pasta was absolutely amazing. Super flavorful, with a generous amount of sauce and really delicious meat. We added extra mushrooms and it took the whole thing to the next level — highly recommend! My pesto pasta was also very good — just a solid, tasty pesto pasta. I saw a lot of reviews complaining that the pasta was undercooked, but that’s just classic al dente. Ours was perfectly cooked. If you’re used to overcooked, mushy pasta, this might not be your spot — but for anyone who appreciates real pasta texture, it’s great. The vibe inside is cozy and gives off a nice Italian feel. Even the disposable tableware is thoughtfully chosen — beautiful eco-friendly utensils and plates made from recycled materials. It’s clear they care about sustainability. Overall, we had a great experience and would definitely come back!

If I know one thing, it's vodka rigatoni. So when I say this is the best in America, I'm not being dramatic-- I'm reporting the results of hundreds of bowls and decades of "research." I've ordered it in every corner of the continental U.S. and more than enough of Italy, and absolutely nobody does it like More Than Pasta. This vodka rigatoni is on its own planet. The sauce is silky, rich, bright, and somehow both comforting and elevated. The rigatoni is perfectly al dente, and the consistency is unmatched-- it hits every single time. And most importantly, my sensitive-stomached boyfriend has never once complained, which is its own small miracle and the reason we order at least three times a week without hesitation (his favorite is the creamy dry beef). To the chef and owner, thank you for being absolute geniuses and ending my lifelong search for the best pasta. I've found it. This isn't just the best vodka pasta I've had in America--it's the gold standard. Trust me when I say, this is the best you'll ever have.

I've never been more duped by reviews in my life! Between the photos and the great things people said about this place, I expected it to be delicious. It was awful. Undercooked noodles in flavorless tomato paste. I suppose young kids who don't like any flavor *might* like it? Maybe all these rave reviews were written by children under the age of 12?! Nothing seemed fresh or homemade. Never again.

If you want to experience the true taste and aroma of homemade cooking, this is the place for you. The food is fresh, the portions are generous, and every dish is made with love – just like at home. The staff is kind and welcoming, and the atmosphere is cozy, so you really feel like a guest here, not just a customer. A warm recommendation for anyone who loves traditional dishes and a good meal.

Our carbonara pasta with added meatball was overall good. The quality is good, the service was nice, and the meatballs tasted authentically homemade which was nice, but I was missing the “wow” factor and something to make me feel like I need to return. I’m a hard food critic- I need that wow factor. It wasn’t the carbonara I had in Roma. Enjoyable, yes, but I was not amazed. If you want pasta, give this place a try and support a small business at least :)

I work nearby here and figured I’d give this a try at lunchtime. Another reviewer said duped by reviews. Can’t agree more with that. I ordered the chicken parm sandwich and vegetable soup. The chicken was super woody and tough. Sauce was dry. The whole thing seemed like it was microwaved. Worse chicken parm I’ve ever had. No joke. The vegetable soup was a tasteless tomato type broth. Very bland. Need salt and some veggie chunks. They also play some weird dance electronic music which just creates a whole weird vibe to the place. Counter guy was nice. Definitely my one and only meal there ever.

Possibly the worst pasta I have had. I mean, reading from the reviews, I was excited to try, but the taste and service were very subpar. First, this is like Chipotle style, where you choose your noodles, sauce, and protein, and they cook it for you. When I asked what people usually get with risotto, the guy at the front was very reluctant,he is like, "You choose any sauce from basic or house." Like you couldn't give a popular combination? I read reviews about homemade meatball, so I ordered these extra and am very disappointed. Maybe it's supposed to be different, but Im use to soft and tender meatballs. These were really chewy, a bit hard. Very meatty flavor, nothing else. Overall, this place has no identity...what I mean is, this build Your own pasta concept doesnt really work for me. There are pasta that just goes well together, as simple as spaghetti with meatball, fettuccine with cream sauce, linguine with clam or rigatoni with vodka sauce etc... They should just sell what they are good at, with actual dish name. It's like paying premium for Chipotle. With this price tag I paid, I could have gotten actual pasta dish from any italian restaurant.

I don’t usually leave negative reviews, but this experience was too unacceptable to ignore. I was served undercooked pasta. Not “al dente,” just plain uncooked. It was hard, chewy, and clearly hadn’t spent enough time in boiling water. When I tried to politely bring this up, the owner was incredibly disrespectful. Not only was there no apology, but his attitude was condescending and dismissive. Sadly, it seems this is his usual behavior. Just look at how he replies to other reviews. It’s a pattern. The same rude tone and unwillingness to accept feedback, consistently defensive and dismissive of any criticism. It’s honestly embarrassing. It’s clear that customer service is not a priority here. After checking the reviews more closely I noticed I’m not the only one complaining about uncooked food several others mentioned the same issue, so it’s clearly not a one-off mistake it’s a recurring problem they are unwilling to change. Plenty of great restaurants around that actually care about food quality and how they treat people…this is not one of them.
