The 22 Best Restaurants In The Hudson Valley - Hudson Valley - The Infatuation

"If you find yourself in the sleepy village of Kinderhook, bee-line to Morningbird and order their breakfast sandwich. It’s made with lemongrass pork sausage, a golden fried egg, scallion chimichurri, and sambal-flecked mayo, all on a fluffy milk bun that easily soaks up runny egg yolk. Morningbird is also a solid option for a leisurely lunch—a warm bowl of green curry with hearty mushrooms is ideal for enjoying at the window bar on a rainy day. There isn't much seating inside and people tend to stay a while typing manuscripts or thumbing through the latest edition of Kinfolk, so just know it can be hard to snag a table." - anne cruz, clare lagomarsino, keith hernandez, chanize thorpe

Morningbird Cafe - Review - Kinderhook - Hudson Valley - The Infatuation

"It’s natural to fantasize when you're at Morningbird, a quaint all-day cafe in the sleepy village of Kinderhook. The robin egg blue built-in bookcase easily inspires thoughts of renovating a 19th-century farmhouse and stocking it with vegetables you grew and canned yourself. Seeing the tables filled with people leisurely leafing through Kinfolk might trigger a fleeting Google search of “jobs where you can have a two-hour long breakfast on a Thursday.” But most importantly, the strongest fantasy will be to live nearby, so you can eat pastries and breakfast sandwiches here as often as possible. photo credit: David A. Lee photo credit: David A. Lee photo credit: David A. Lee Pause Unmute All their food is perfect for fueling up before you explore the Hudson Valley. There are breakfast options like a rich lemongrass pork egg sandwich and pillowy donuts, along with lunchtime bowls of curry and soup that are exactly what you’ll want when your hiking plans get rained out. There aren’t a ton of tables, so get here early if you plan to stop by on a Saturday morning, when there are more crowds hoping to snag a pre-farmers market treat. Food Rundown Morningbird Egg Sandwich After having approximately two bites of this breakfast sandwich, we sat in complete silence for a few seconds, then said, "that is amazing" four times in a row. The scallion chimichurri is bright and herby, and you won’t care about the mess when licking up bits of sambal-flecked mayo when it runs down your wrist. photo credit: David A. Lee Vegetable Green Curry This coconutty green curry has a warm and comforting vegetable-filled broth. And it’s fun to dig around the bowl with your spoon like a gold rush miner, finding gems of sweet potatoes and tivoli mushrooms that are more stunning than a handful of precious metals. The generous sprinkling of fried shallots and leafy herbs is also nice since it breaks up the softer textures in each bite. photo credit: Anne Cruz Massaman Chicken Sandwich The seasoning on the moist chicken thigh is well-spiced, and the lightly pickled cucumbers make this dish feel like a distant cousin to Nashville hot chicken. It’s very good, but we found ourselves wistfully comparing it to the breakfast sandwich like an ex that we remember a little too fondly. It’s fine to skip, but it also gets the job done if you’re not in the mood for eggs. photo credit: Anne Cruz" - Anne Cruz

Google
DO NOT get the mochi donut… you will never stop thinking about it and you’ll eventually be shopping for bigger pants. Delicious food with veg options! The staff is awesome, coffee options are delicious but I wish there were more flavoring choices. Atmosphere is an aesthetic vibe but sadly, not very cozy. Nice to sit at the windows and watch the goings on in town though.

When we first moved to the area two years ago Morning Bird was our go to coffee spot. The barista at the time was excellent and the drinks were consistently great. Over the past year we have had one too many disappointing experiences which culminated in the following. My wife ordered a cold brew. It was served in an 8oz hot to go cup. She was charged $8.64. That’s right, eight dollars and sixty four cents for 8oz of cold brew in a hot to go cup.

We've only gone a few times, but each time we've gone in the morning. We grab lattes, gluten free mochi donuts, and GF chocolate coconut cookies. Lattes are strong (which we welcome!). Baked goods are delicious. It may sound ridiculous, but I think it's kind of brave when baked goods have a generous amount of salt in/on them. The savory-ness bring these into a different arena than typical sugar-laden "desserts". Makes them memorable. They even made our kid a special steamed milk drink when they ran out of hot chocolate for the day. She loved the heart on top! Everything is so good that we dream about the mornings when they are open so we can come back. Also best place to eavesdrop on conversations 😂 it's happened to us and we've done it to others-- at least to get the feel of what's going on in Kinderhook.

New place to have breakfast and lunch. Limited menu but food n drinks were great.

Google
Ok, stopped by with several family members on Sunday. Perfect cappuccinos and lattes. The breakfast sandwich with spicy Thai lemongrass sausage and scallion aioli was perfect - and if you have never had a fresh from the oil mochi donut you have not lived. We had a toast special with papaya and other great green tasty treats on it (forget the name but see the photo! ) sweet but paired well with the spicy sandwich. The owner and staff couldn't have been nicer. The giant windows and white interior area are maybe a little stark for some but the vases of fresh tulips on the tables added a bit of color and cheer. Can't wait to come back for lunch/ dinner as my son and daughter in law have taken out on multiple occasions and have nothing but accolades. (and yes, I took a bite before the photo..... I will take that blame)

Google
I'm not sure what kind of culinary witchery the place does to make such a unique and delicious egg sandwich. I've never tasted anything quite like it. The mochi donuts are also out of this world. Very impressed with my first visit and will definitely return.

Google
I can’t believe it has taken me so long to eat here!! The most delicious breakfast sandwich I have ever had in my life, seriously. Great atmosphere and lovely staff.

Google
This is a great place to stop in kinderhook. The food is Vietnamese inspired with a Hudson valley twist. They serve lunch and dinner most days. We got the vegetarian glass noodles which were superb and the breakfast sandwich. The egg was cooked perfectly and the milk bun is made in store. They also sell a few odds and ends as well as some unique pastries. They had a mochi donut that is really unique and a must try, it was very good! The same aff here are also very friendly.

Yelp
We had such a fabulous time at Morningbird last weekend. Everything about the experience was on point: the vibes, the service, the food, the drinks. It certainly didn't hurt that the weather was beautiful and there was one outdoor table open when we arrived so we could sit with our dog by our side. Morningbird is a great fit for the area and absolutely worth visiting even if you're a town or two away. We came here around 1pm on a Saturday, on our way from Hudson to the Adirondacks. Thankfully it was on the way, allowing us to both shave off a bit of our drive and try a new spot we'd been eying for a while. Thanks to some pictures on Google, I saw that there were at least a few outdoor tables, which was important because we had our dog with us. You need to order inside but they'll bring it out to your when it's ready. Though we only spent all of five minutes indoors, I immediately loved the vibe and could picture myself hanging, reading, working here for a while. All the tables were full at this hour, but it did not seem overly packed. The coffee here is delicious, though I can only speak to the cold brew. That said, a friend of ours speaks highly of the lattes/other espresso drinks, for what it's worth. While waiting for my coffee, I perused the selection of prepared foods -- curated with a precision I've come to expect of most businesses in this area. As some have mentioned, the food at Morningbird (and the neighboring Aviary) is Asian-inspired, as are the items for sale. Expect gourmet condiments and seasoning, alongside plenty of coffee/tea and coffee/tea-related products. It's a marvel that I didn't walk out of there with five jars of chili crisp (potentially my all-time favorite condiment). Food-wise, I got the Iceberg Wedge w/ fried shiitakes, blistered sungolds, salted cashews, vegan thai green goddess dressing and my partner got the Fried Omelette and Kale over rice w/ garlic fried rice, roasted kale, crispy shallot. Every ingredient of both dishes was fresh and delicious and flavorful, and the preparations were familiar with a bit of whimsy. The prices are extremely reasonable for both items, but it's possible that it's because they're both on the smaller side as far as entrees go. Not a complaint, just worth mentioning in case you are very hungry. Service was super fast, almost impossibly so. An enjoyable experience start to finish, making Morningbird a spot we'll certainly be returning to.

Yelp
Beautiful buildings, cute interior, nice outdoor space, friendly service, delicious well seasoned food, good lattes!

Yelp
Amazing breakfast sandwich! Flavorful sausage patty served on a light and flavorful brioche bun that is not soggy, together with a lemon grass infused sauce that is heavenly. I would eat here daily if my budget allowed! The coffee is excellent as well. A toasty, balanced brew that is thankfully non acidic. Pastries look amazing. I have not tried yet as I cant seem to resist the breakfast sandwich!

Yelp
I guess their food and pastries are ok, but their hours suck. Hence the name "Morningbird", the kitchen doesn't even open until 9am, and they are only open Thursday-Sunday.

Yelp
Who *are* these fashionable boulevardiers? And why are they in Kinderhook rather than Bed-Stuy? Excellent breakfast sandwich served in nonchalant ambivalence as in: all the same to us whether you're here or not. Very good mochi donuts and other baked goods. Seats are taken by... boulevardiers

Yelp
A very pretty little cafe that serves tasty and thoughtfully conceived food with some SE Asian elements, like breakfast sandwiches with lemongrass in the sausage. Servings are small, and seating is scant, but you're here to go "oooh, how nice!!" not to stuff your face (not that there's anything wrong with that). I've popped in here a couple of times and have enjoyed everything I've tried. The interior is beautiful, but the seats outside seem like they'd be the best in the house when the weather's nice. Service was nice and friendly. I'd definitely visit again, though not if I was desperate to sit down for a while -- it's small enough and popular enough that a seat can be hard to get.

Yelp
Yummy, mild sweet-potato cinnamon roll. Nothing amazing, just a solid not-too-sweet cinnamon roll that I probably wouldn't get again. The cafe itself is adorable and hip though, straight out of Brooklyn.

Yelp
I stopped by after grabbing some fruits from the orchards looking for a snack--honestly I was looking for OK Pantry but went in through the wrong door LOL. I liked the ceramics display of local vendors, and I was super tempted to buy a matcha bowl...but alas, I am poor :P They have a very basic drink assortment, so I just went next door to find a drink to fit my fancy. Lots of Asian influence, which is nice to see in Upstate NY! I got the scallion pancake grilled cheese, which came with a side of pickled onions to balance out the grease. I wasn't expecting it, but the scallion pancake was the deep fried kind, with flaky, crispy layers that broke off in shards when you bit into it. There was some sort of white cheese in the middle, with a touch of spicy aioli maybe? The issue was that I think there wasn't enough pickled stuff, because the meal was immensely greasy and left a pool of oil after I finished. I went home after and was super tempted to take a nap. Would recommend splitting this with a friend!

Yelp
Something different than your usual breakfast-brunch-lunch places in this part of NY! So good!

Yelp
I stopped by Morningbird in Kinderhook very recently for a quick bite to eat. This local cafe and gift store is currently takeout only due to Covid and offers fresh brewed coffee/espresso and tea drinks, a small selection of homemade baked goods/pastries, breakfast sandwiches and specialty dishes for lunch & dinner such as curry dishes, vegetarian/vegan selections and meat/seafood options, which change weekly. They offer online ordering for convenience or you can order in person. After ordering, you can head to a back room where the kitchen pickup window is. I ordered the Vegetable Green Curry ($12 plus tax) which was a modest portion with a mix of sweet potatoes & trumpet mushrooms stewed with green curry & coconut milk over steamed rice. This dish had good hearty flavors on the spicier side, which I really enjoyed. I can't wait to stop in again for coffee and lunch next time I'm driving through the area.

Yelp
Such a wonderful addition to Kinderhook! We visited multiple times while staying in town with family and were so happy with our iced coffees and cappuccinos. I didn't try the pastries or other food but they looked amazing. Lovely ambiance with large windows, lots of seating inside and sidewalk seating as well.

Yelp
Very lucky to call this place my local coffee shop. Right now it's great coffee, pastries and a select breakfast/lunch menu. Everything I've had has been delicious. The Mochi donuts are great. The breakfast sandwich is killer. Go to morningbird.

Carl B.

Yelp
Lovely space, charming locale, superb frittata and salad lunch, prompt and friendly service. We will be back soon for dinner at the adjacent Aviary eatery.

Yelp
What a wonder of a spot! We moved to Kinderhook from NYC in May and as avowed foodies we were worried about getting our jam on upstate. But after multiple trips to Morningbird and The Aviary we're feeling right as rain. Thank you so much for the amazing meals and delicious goodies!! It's our new home away from home...

Roberta N.

Yelp
I agree with Megan D.! Great addition to Kinderhook! We stopped in for lunch and it was great. They also have a lovely assortment boxed tea. The food was great - coffee wonderful. We skipped dessert but won't next time.

Yelp
We had the best cups of coffee at a recent stop at Morningbird! We were in the area for a holiday with family and loved this place! We bought coffee beans to take with us for the remainder of our trip! Our only disappointment was that they were closed the next day when our kids came into town, so we couldn't take them to Morningbird for lunch . . . next time!!!
