Best Beer Bars and Restaurants in Austin | Eater Austin

"The downtown Belgian bar focuses on beers from the European country, including Trappist, hefeweizens, pilsners, and more, alongside brews from other places, including Central Texas. It offers 24 beers on top and over 40 in the bottle. Mark a special occasion by sabering giant bottles of Deus, served in champagne glasses. The gorgeous silver taps behind the bar create a lot of ambiance, as do the exposed brick walls. For those looking for a more outdoorsy experience, there’s a lovely patio out back." - Nadia Chaudhury

Downtown Austin Restaurants May Be the Last to Recover From COVID-19 | Eater Austin

"I found that Mort Subite, a downtown Belgium beer bar, is operating at roughly 22 percent of its pre-pandemic business, is preparing walk-in events (like an art exhibit) in case foot traffic picks up during SXSW, continues to require masks per local orders, and recruited the Classic American food truck to provide food service so it could benefit from temporary restaurant reclassification." - Joe Lanane

Google
Mort Subite does not disappoint! A visit to Austin is not complete without stopping here for an amazing beer. Staff is the best in town!

Tyler S.

Google
FANTASTIC selection. Extremely knowledgeable staff. If you don't want the typical menu of 70% IPA's and the same local breweries over and over again, I highly recommend this place.

Gunar S.

Google
Every time I visit from Chicago, I make it a point to come to this place. If you want something beyond the regular IPA or Pilsner, then this place is a must. Beer connoisseurs will be in heaven.

Rusty R.

Google
A fun place for Belgian beers and wine nestled in the heart of downtown. The beers are interesting and there’s plenty of seating with an outdoor area right near Congress for good people watching. The staff are friendly and helpful when picking out a beer.

Jennifer M.

Google
MG the bartender was super nice and really inviting. Just from the get go, we loved the place because of her! The ambience is very authentic and Belgium like. Love the music and it’s very chill. Good AC and has a great Spanish food tuck in the back. Highly recommend

Rob W

Google
Great selection of Belgian beers with knowledgeable staff, and the snacks were delicious too!

Google
I honestly don’t have enough words to describe how awesome and cool this place is! Who even invests in serving Trappist beer these days? With over 90k craft breweries in the U.S., this place completely blew my mind. I can’t believe I didn’t ask the names of the amazing staff—the woman with the colorful hair and the coolest guy in Austin with blonde hair. They were incredible! I loved them so much that I even suggested they should teach more people how to appreciate the great stuff they have. I’m certain once people walk in and try any of their beers, they’ll never go anywhere else. And don’t even get me started on the Spanish food truck—huge shoutout to that couple for serving such incredible food! Thanks, Austin, and thanks to everyone there!

Google
Fantastic craft beer place. Best I've been to in years. Draft beers are amazing. All-gender bathrooms. Great service (MJ and Andrew). Out Of Nowhere food truck (Miriam) is excellent. Provides water for adequate hydration.

Yelp
Heck yeah! Found a quad on tap, my favorite beer by La Trappe. This place is cozy with a food truck out back. The service is great. Nice and chill when we visited. We didn't get to try the food truck, definitely next time.

Lath G.

Yelp
Great beers! Duchesse on draft which is super rare. Saison DuPont phenomenal, great beer list and great atmosphere!

Emily N.

Yelp
Great Belgian beer options. Knowledgeable bar tender. Cool atmosphere. Food truck out back with delicious options. Highly recommend this place if you're in Austin. Any time of day but evening is better!

Yelp
Driving through downtown Austin with a friend of mine looking for a good place to enjoy a beer or two. Imagine my surprise when I saw the Mort Subite sign. Saw it too late to stop initially, but kudos to my buddy for being willing to turn us around so we could have a proper look at the place. I should probably clarify (in case Yelp's description or your own prior research didn't already tip you off) that Mort Subite is a true Belgian beer bar. That means a couple things. Firstly, this is NOT the place for you if you're looking for something domestic. To emphasize the point, I should mention that my friend asked if they carry any Hefeweizen beers, which was met by mild reproach from the beer tender. They are, as the kids (probably used to) say, keeping it real. Of course, that wasn't a problem for me since I am a HUGE fan of Belgian beers. No I mean an absolute super fan. And fortunately we were able to find some decent options for my friend as well. The interior layout is definitely appropriate to the theming. Beautifully designed bar. Seating inside is somewhat limited but I was okay sitting outside anyway. A TV near the back but this wouldn't be the place to go if you want to watch your favorite US sports team I wouldn't think. We sat outside since the weather was decent and people-watched. Seats weren't super comfortable but fine for our purposes. I enjoyed a Kwak (or two - I wasn't driving :-)). For those of you new to the Kwak - check out my pictures. The beer originated from back in the days when one would roll up to the bar on horseback. The wooden holder for the oddly-shaped class would be used to set the drink (since having a glass shaped for a table-top would be less useful in that scenario). It's an amber beer that is super easy drinking for the fairly high gravity. So, if you like high-gravity (high-alcohol content) beers that are actually palatable, I recommend you give this place a try.

Yelp
My fiancé had to stop by after she saw the Brasserie d'achouffe beer sign. She said she never seen this beer in the states and reminded her time in Europe. I can't blame her the beer was pretty tasty! The bar was also nice and clear which was a nice hangout spot on a hot summer day. All paired well with the beers and awesome tunes they had playing.
google avatar

Mary S.

Yelp
We came for the food truck out back but had a Kvak and Duvel. it's hard to find parking in most downtowns, but there's a lot right next door. This is now one of my favorite locations in all of Austin.
google avatar

Jason K.

Yelp
Awesome Belgian beer bar. Food truck is closed now, but beer selection is excellent, prices are reasonable, server is super friendly. Definitely dig this place.
google avatar

Courtney K.

Yelp
Chill and easy going environment with a back patio area. Good for small groups. Service was good
google avatar

Shannon M.

Yelp
This place is a gem if you like Belgian beer! Prices are great too. Spent an afternoon reading and enjoying duvel

Yelp
We stumbled upon Mort Subite while just walking around downtown Austin. They had a good selection of beer. Their Gulden Draak smoke was out of this world! It was a smoked beer, those who like whiskey would be really into it. I have never had something like quite like it before, but Mort Subite has definitely perfected the art of smoking a beer. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. The indoor was quiet while we were there. The outside seating was right on the street, so it was louder. Definitely check this place out if you are in the area! A quality place, great for beer connoisseurs.

David C.

Yelp
Stopped by for a quick spell along the way to dinner. Service was quick, beer was good and cold. Definitely like the different ranges of glasses used, and the bartenders were very helpful with anything we needed. I think the nice thing here was knowledgeability with the beer. I had a kwak rouge since that was a nice staple for me when visiting Belgium. He had helped compatriot decide on a beer and matching chalice. Made for a good time. We were both not the biggest of beer drinkers tho if in the area and craving, this seems like a nice spot to settle down for a bit.
google avatar

Nan T.

Yelp
A hidden downtown gem! Stopped by yesterday and had two beers while I read my book. Lots of seating, both inside and outside on the front and back patios. Bartenders were very friendly and welcoming. They had a very unique selection of beer, very authentic, and the two I tried (the Duvel (sp?) golden ale and the Baptist) were fantastic. I will certainly be back!
google avatar

Daroki K.

Yelp
Ambiance was cool. Belgians tasted good. Service is kinda meh... Place is dark which is cool, but also kinda sticky and dirty needed to be wiped down.
google avatar

Sam S.

Yelp
The service is prompt and the ambience and aesthetics is what sets place unique for visitors.
google avatar

Camille J.

Yelp
A cool beer bar in downtown Austin. I had a Pilsner and my brother had the Duvel. I liked how the poured the beer in glasses with the logos of that exact beer. They were good. Most the the beers are higher ABV. It's definitely pricey for beer though. Service was decent
google avatar

Tina H.

Yelp
It was ONLY beer and wine. No food and no liquor. At least when we were there. Had to go in to get our drinks to take outside.
google avatar

Bill G.

Yelp
Great location and theme. They had a nice mix of beers on tap, and the selection was very thoughtful. Several of their Belgian beers are pretty common: for example, Chimay and Gulden Draak are pretty easy to find in liquor stores, and so I'd recommend going for less common options. I strongly recommend whatever Flemish Ale they have on tap. It's a tart beer, but much more subtle and effective than most tart beers (which often taste like Smarties due to added flavorings) While Belgian beers are certainly higher quality than standard draft beers, I still found the prices a little bit steep. I think it would make sense to price each pour around the cost of a glass of wine, perhaps $7-8 apiece. Bartenders were a bit rude, they were not serving people based on the order of arrival. The food truck out back is a bit weird, you order from them directly. We were sitting in the bar with our drinks, reading the food truck's menu, and one of the bartenders, unprompted, walked by and aggressively told us not to attempt to order anything at the bar---which seemed unnecessary.
google avatar

Blake H.

Yelp
Amazing Belgian beer selection, great space, and very friendly owner/staff. Thank you!
google avatar

Liz N.

Yelp
Very solid Belgian beer bar with tons of great options! It was just a few blocks down the street from our hotel. As the night progressed they def got busy, but it wasn't too bad during the day. They also have beers that aren't on their tap list that you can enjoy at the bar as well. Good customer service and nice beer selection.
google avatar

Cheryl K.

Yelp
Found this place walking around Austin. Great little find. The bar focuses on Belgian beers, and has an extensive selection. Bartenders are friendly and knowledgeable of the menu, willing to point you the right direction. Added bonus, all beers are served in their appropriate glass!! Inside is a little small, but they have a nice patio area in front. A little pricy compared to other breweries we stopped at, but considering the unusual and hard to find beers they carry, it is worth the price to treat yourself to something from here.
google avatar

Hector B.

Yelp
This used to be one of my favorite places to go in Austin. The beer here is amazing and from all over the world! It appears to now be closed.
google avatar

Vanessa D.

Yelp
Tried two beers and settled with Tripel Karmeliet. Delicious. Sat outside. Cool vibe. 11/10 recommend.

Yelp
It's bolshit place ! Today 12/24/22 5:33 pm , we came here and my friend put her head down on tabele because she was tired and we didn't sleep for 15 H , we asked her (waitress ) for somthing from texas and she came and said I can give you texas water because your friend was tired (even if it was that case you could say I can't serve you because you are drunk instead of bringing TEXas water and say this is only thing that I can serve you ! Poor owner who invest money here with this kind of staff !

Yelp
My wife and I had an amazing visit to Mort Subite two weekends ago on a trip to central Texas. First of all and most importantly the quality of the Belgian beer served there was top-notch. Every beer we drank from both the taps and bottles tasted very fresh with no hint whatsoever of off-flavors from mishandling. If you're a Belgian beer nerd who ever found themselves thrilled to see an Abt 12 or Duvel on the menu only to be served something unrecognizable in a pint-sized glass you know the feeling. The beer at Mort Subite tastes like the breweries that made them are a short walk down the street. We had a great chat with Adam the manager of Mort Subite while we were there. His sharp wit and story-telling style could have had us listening for hours had circumstances permitted. The beer and conversation were a highlight of our trip. Thank you for the hospitality! If you are a Belgian beer nerd or ever wondered just how incredible beer can taste Mort Subite is your answer. If the latter, please abandon your pale lagers, oatmeal stouts and especially juicy IPAs when ordering. Tell them you're new to the style and they will take care of the rest.
google avatar

American E.

Yelp
Such a great bar for anyone that enjoys those exquisite beers. Adam is also a great bartender in case you don't know what you're looking for I'm sure he'll help you find some thing you'll really enjoy. Must visit this place !
google avatar

Nathan S.

Yelp
Belgian beer? "Say less", as the kids say. Went there with a few coworkers after clocking out and we had a blast. I was upset that they didn't carry Leffe or Blanche de Bruxelles, and so was the bartender! He was awesome, and very helpful with alternative recommendations. I'm no beer snob by any means, but most good beers I taste are either Belgian or Mexican, and Mort did not disappoint. I will undoubtedly be back to enjoy more beers I can't pronounce.
google avatar

Patrick L.

Yelp
I'm not into Belgian Beers, but I love Mort Subite! Awesome vibe, amazing selection of beers (not all Belgians) and excellent service. Not sure what's not to love about Mort Subite? 5 stars!
google avatar

Jay S.

Yelp
Amazing bar. So glad this place exists. an island of good imported beers amongst a sea of basic-ass IPAs and American lagers. I would highly recommend this place if you want a more sophisticated evening, but with a knowledgeable staff to guide you into a better beer world of tripels and quads.
google avatar

Don L.

Yelp
Straight outta Belgium! I love it! I popped by this place for a beer and found it interesting that I previously and unknowingly walked right past when meeting friends at the TexMex joint next door. Service here was great during the day - when I stopped in. I presume the guy running the bar was the owner but didn't get into a convo about that. He appeared to have moved from San Francisco a few years back from what I gathered and he was very beer knowledgeable which made for my sour selection. We spoke of some other sours in the area and such. He was a genuine guy having a genuine conversation. That small chatter right there made me feel like I could call this a regular watering hole in a town usually piled high with trendy pop-ups. He celebrated 3 yrs just recently and I can see why he's still here. It reminds me of a small establishment I visited in Brussels last year right adjacent to Mannekin Pils (the famous peeing baby statue for those unaware). It had a sense of community and Mort Subite also has that. Maybe it's a Belgium thing but I felt like I was right back there when I sat here. I really enjoyed myself here and although I had but one drink (i was doing my own beer exploration day), I will be back.
google avatar

Constance C.

Yelp
Cool and quiet inside, but with front and back patios if you want outside space (with it without people watching). The beers are excellent, the bartender was friendly and knowledgeable. This is my second time here, and although Belgians aren't my typical favorite style, I always find something delicious.
google avatar

Hope D.

Yelp
Excellent selection of Belgian trappist ales and various styles of ale one possibly hasn't heard of. The entire place is a celebration of all things Belgium, and they are attentive and diligent in this, down to the knives used to deftly skim the froth from the freshly-poured flagons of Westmalle their knowledgeable and friendly bartenders pour up. Totally recommended. If you like Chimay and Maredsous and such, this place is for you!
google avatar

John F.

Yelp
Quite the find in Austin for just walking by and thinking of a beer. Great stop and a super-gal bartender who was really knowledgeable of the beers. Great draft selection, in fact an OUTSTANDING draft selection. They even have some bottled selection too. I really like that they don't carry the Milwaukee or St Louis brands and are all craft. My only criticism would be that beer shouldn't be served in a small (almost) wine glass at $9/beer. That's just too rich that it limits me to one. If it were a pint the value would be better. Four Stars instead of Five.
google avatar

Leila R.

Yelp
I love all beers Belgian so I have been wanting to come here for a while now. Came in on a cold Wed January evening and my friend and I, save for whom I can only assume was a regular, were the only ones in the bar. The bartender was very friendly and appreciated that we concurred on beer suggestions for my friend. I really loved that they serve the beers in their correct respective glassware (especially the Kwak, which is worth ordering for the glass apparatus alone!). The prices per serving are a bit on the higher-end of the Belgian Beer spectrum from other bars I have had the same beers at, but honestly, I liken this sitch to the line from "The Prince & Me"..."you can really taste the extra 10 cents". For a place that's French for 'Sudden Death', it isn't nearly all that intesnse, but when I had my first pour of their Gulden Draak 9000 Quad, I did kinda feel like I'd died and gone to Belgian Beer heaven!
google avatar

Taylor Z.

Yelp
Absolutely phenomenal beers! After more than a year of experiencing this place, I have yet to try a beer I didn't like. Yes its on the pricier end but the quality of the beer here is worth its weight. I wish they could pour the beer a bit better. Most of my beers come out with more than half as foam.

Kelly M.

Yelp
The beer and atmosphere were good but the bartenders lost my credit card. They barely even pretended to look for it and gave me attitude when I asked if they were looking. What gets me is I had already tipped by then, so I effectively gave these unapologetic twits money for losing my credit card.
google avatar

Max G.

Yelp
If you like Belgian beer, or if you just want to try Belgian beer, Mort Subite is the place you should go. This cozy bar features about 30 Belgian beers on draft, and has many more in bottles. Of course, every beer is served in the brewery's unique glass. The staff is friendly and helpful. They also have an Indian food truck behind their outdoor beer garden. Delicious food that goes surprisingly well with the Belgian beer.

Thomas D.

Yelp
Been coming here for years now! Great beer selection and very authentic ambiance. Recently added a patio as well.
google avatar

Ryan R.

Yelp
Very cool Belgian ale bar right in the heart of downtown. Can't believe I haven't seen this place while walking around dt.. a real hidden gem if you're looking for Belgian beers. They have a nice selection of Belgian ales on tap, most I had never heard of which was nice to be able to try all new things. They also have some higher % beers in the frig which appear to be some of their fancier ones, eager to have a go at these next time. Real cool spot, good for going in & trying some new Belgians to get an idea for this particular subset of beers, right in the heart of Austin.
google avatar

Darci F.

Yelp
Wow...warm beer off the tap 10 minutes and almost undrinkable. But what the choice in music for a belgian bar-Nope it ain't dope.. Learn to pour a good head..this is European beer and they know how to get the beer right.I had Kwak beer in the Netherlands in April it was great beer out of the bottle this..well I tried it twice at 9 bucks I should have just got a 6 pack
google avatar

Kim N.

Yelp
We love this bar! Fabulous draft choices in the proper stemware!! Even an outside patio to bring the dog. Talked to bartender about Chimay, Belgium.

Plucked P.

Yelp
A fantastic bar with knowledgeable and kind staff and an exceptional variety of Belgian beer a must Stop for anyone visiting Austin!

Danielle T.

Yelp
Pretty cool option for generic 6th street. If you like unusual European beverages they have a pretty decent selection. And some unique food options, I didn't try. But I found a tasty saison and I was happy to enjoy it on the cozy patio out front. Nice. I'll return.
google avatar

Will S.

Yelp
Great talk bar with inviting, chill atmosphere and access to the only Belgian beer pipeline in the state, iirc. Like all bars, the bartenders set the standard and, hence, the five star review. Anthony and Piper are a great team and are professional, warm and inviting with customers. The draft beer selection is exceptional and you'd be hard pressed to find an equal rival in the city. Directly across the street from Elephant Room on Congress and 3rd, you get a great mix of residents and tourists, alike. There's outdoor seating both in the front and back (including a solid American fare trailer in the back -- good philly cheesesteak). But I digress, it's all about the ambiance, beer and good people at Mort's.
google avatar

Tim K.

Yelp
This place gets two-stars because of their selection. Being from Belgium, I enjoy looking up places in America and Mort Subite might be the only Belgian place in Austin. To my big disappointment, besides the selection they have, there's not much attraction for a native to come here, unless you want a badly poured beer and rude service. The first time I came to Mort Subite I can no longer remember, probably because it was underwhelming but after a lot of people told me to go there as a Belgian, I figured to give it another chance as I was pretty excited to have a La Chouffe on draft. When I noticed that the bartender was pouring this high ABV beer wrong, I asked him if I could give him some advice on how to pour it better. His answer was simply "no" and walked away while he handed my my check. Completely mesmerized, I still tipped him, and walked away. When I explained to my friend what happened, he said I needed to have given context. So I went back in, ordered another La Chouffe and as soon as he placed the glass under the tap, not holding or tilting it, I apologized for earlier and asked him again if I could give some advice as a Belgian who has had many years experience working in bars. He immediately stopped the pour and looked at me. When I explained him to hold the glass, tilt it and pour the beer on the spot where your finger is, and how that technique is very common and necessary to pour high ABV beer, he just stared me dead in the eye and continue to pour as he started, wasting a lot of beer and giving me a shitty poured beer. I send management an email since I thought that they would love to be aware about this before I put anything online but after almost a two weeks of no response, I feel obligated to share this experience.
google avatar

Crystal R.

Yelp
The only thing good about this place was the variety of Belgian Beer, which is what they're known for. They had 2 of our favorites, 1 of which is incredibly hard to find in Austin, La Trappe. I do appreciate the beers in the proper glass. The front patio gives nice European vibes. However, the service is horrible. I wish I had gotten her name, tall thin woman, medium length blonde hair. Very rude and short with our group, the birthday boy with us had questions and she wasn't happy to help. She told him to stop talking in the middle of their conversation. Then when we went to close our tab the bill was $135 for 4 beers. Four beers, by the glass. Now some of the beers are pricier than others since they're imported but we were aware of that as the prices are listed on the chalk board behind the bar. We also don't mind paying good money for quality beer. We questioned the tab and the person behind the bar investigated and said the tall thin woman, who was short with us earlier, charged us for the two large bottles of some vintage or specialty bottle, which is not what we ordered nor what she served. She eventually fixed the tab but it was a very sketchy 'mistake' and the entire experience was memorable in a terrible way. We will not be back and are disappointed since we went in very excited to try it out. I don't recommend this bar.
google avatar

Ricardo M.

Yelp
Please do yourself a favor and come try delicious belgian beer. The place is clean. Service is fast and friendly. Clean bathrooms and a friendly atmosphere sets this beer garden a step above the rest nearby. Come see what you've been missing! Adam, thank you for the amazing service!! I'll definitely be back!
google avatar

Brian H.

Yelp
I would have given this place 5 stars, but they covered up the Tintin mural with a refrigerator.
google avatar

TC T.

Yelp
First visit was at lunch, so it's hard to judge a place that appears to be an awesome beer spot at lunchtime (at least for me). But the taps are good and the glass of Chouffee I had was great with the pastrami sandwich from the food trailer out back. Which was outstanding. I will go back soon. I still miss the great bar Gambrinus which was on the same block in the 1980's. Bobo introduced most of us to our first Belgian ales, even before Celis started brewing his magnificent beers east of town. I will suggest that the newcomer also serve pomme frites with homemade mayonnaise. Cheers!

Tim M.

Yelp
Great bar and food. The food is in the truck in the back. Hidden gem right on Congress.
