Hey family! It's been a little while but I wanted to share my experience at Morton's this past Saturday night. I mentioned to a friend that it was restaurant week in Charlotte and I allowed them to pick a place. I've heard mixed reviews about Morton's where it seems that when it's good, it's really good and when it's bad, it's really bad. I did do a little research and I was cool with the restaurant week menu. I did peruse the main menu but it really wasn't anything that jumped out at me that I wanted to try. I've been to upscale steakhouses and I was curious to see how it compared to them.
It's located in Uptown Charlotte and I would suggest to make things easier, definitely use the valet parking. It was only $11. And aside from going during the week as Uptown can get busy, I also suggest a reservation. Upon walking in I noticed that it was really warm in the inside. And I was thinking, maybe because we were by the door. Unfortunately, I was mistaken. The AC had went out earlier that day . I had to deduct a star because it was uncomfortably warm and I wish there was a sign on the door or an acknowledgment of the lack of AC upon arrival. Had I'd know, I would have went somewhere else but I made the most of it.
We were promptly seated and given menus and water. One thing I absolutely loved was the fact that the service was friendly and efficient. Bless the staff for getting through the night because they were wearing all black. The inside is nice and it has kind of an old school feel but a little dated. Our reservation was at 8:15 and luckily by the time we were seated, some tables were clearing out and it made it a little tolerable. It's business casual but I saw a mix of different styles. Most people had business casual but I also saw people in regular t shirt and jeans. Don't feel too much pressure to dress up too much even though, it feels that you should.
Our server was Anita and she was magnificent. My friend and I had looked up the menu prior, so we already knew what we wanted. The only thing not pictured was that I did get was a glass of rose' which was really good. They have a very extensive wine list but I was disappointed that it wasn't very many selections by the glass. They are catering to you to buy the bottle. I've been to many wineries and I know how much wine should cost. The overhead is really up there. It's ranging from $65-$150 or more. I'm not mad at it but I kind of am. But this place is used a lot for dates and celebrations so if you're in the mood to splurge, I understand. They do have a small selection of cocktails which from the description sound great. If I ever come again, I might just sit at the bar instead.
Even though it's a steakhouse, to me the star of the show was the pork chop that came with apricot chutney. It was delicious and cooked perfectly. My friend ordered that along with the sour cream mashed potatoes. Definitely a perfect pairing. I ordered the center cut filet medium and was slightly disappointed. I thought that it was over cooked to well done but towards the middle and end there was a little pink. It was still tender but I think was truly saved it was the add on of truffle butter. The creamed spinach was just ok, it could use a little more seasoning. But the desserts were a hit for me. I had the key lime pie and it was truly key lime pie. I hadn't had one that tasted so good since Ganache (if you live in Greensboro, you remember that place). I tried my friend's crème brûlée and was also taken aback. I've had many versions of this dessert and by far this was one of the best. And the salad was just a salad and nothing to write home about. It was good but I like my salads to be served on a cold plate and I'm not sure if they serve them that way but it would have been nice.
Would I come back? Maybe. And it's not because of the AC issue. It was a cool place and definitely feels catered to an older adult crowd which is nice but something feels dated. I would definitely like to sit at the bar and see how I would feel versus the main dining area. I would be interested to try the cocktails and order the pork chop. The steak was just average. Just to be fair, I might give it one more try.
