Morton's is another addition to our long-standing tradition of eating steakhouses for special occasions. There is a dress code and I noticed a lot of people in suits but we walked in with polos and dark jeans and had no problem being seated. The places gives off a business happy hour kind of vibe, not so much of a fancy vibe.
Since we were celebrating Valentine's and our anniversary, we went all out and ordered way too much food. But this gave us a good opportunity to try a lot of things on their menu. Service was great and our food came out pretty fast. They also gave us this giant, fluffy loaf to stave off our hunger until the first dish arrived. FYI, the food comes in waves so appetizers first, and once all of that is done, then they'll bring out the entrees. You could probably ask them to bring everything out at once too.
Maine Lobster Ravioli: Our favorite appetizer of the night! Comes with 3 pieces, so not much to begin with. Mixed into the sauce were a couple pieces of lobster claws and crispy brussels sprouts leaves. The creamy sauce, with its slight truffle flavor, was so good, that we cleaned the plate. The on-the-house bread was perfect for wiping up the sauce.
Baked French Onion Soup: Comes out super hot so be careful! While it was a good soup, there wasn't really anything that stood out. There's a nice layer of melted cheese with a ton of soft onion strips underneath. A little sweet, easily finished split between two people.
Nueske's Bacon Strip: This was a disappointment. When it first arrived, the two thick slices (almost a foot long each) looked so good. You could see the crispy caramelization on the bacon. The glaze had a distinct pineapple flavor to it and it just tasted like ham. If it were like a brown sugar or maple glazed flavor, I think it would've worked out a lot better.
Sides: Most of the sides were disappointing. Sautéed Brussels Sprouts weren't really salted and didn't have much flavor. The Matchstick Parmesan and Truffle Fries were really crispy but I didn't think the truffle flavor was strong enough. "The Troy" was just sautéed onions and mushroom and most of the flavor came from the caramelized onions. The only side I thought was worth getting was the Smoked Gouda and Bacon au Gratin Potatoes. Great cheesy flavors and the potatoes were soft and creamy.
Prime Bone-In Ribeye: And now for the main course. The bone-in ribeye comes in at 22 oz. (weight of bone included), which is pretty worth. A medium rare comes a little red in the center but not too chewy. It was super tender and easy to cut through. And I loved that the surface is slightly charred and crispy. This was probably one of my favorite rib-eyes in San Diego. Although not on the menu, you can ask for plain garlic butter as a dipping sauce.
Since we were celebrating, they dropped off their lava cake with vanilla ice cream, on-the-house! It was so good but after all the food, we couldn't finish it. If you do order it, they make everything fresh so give yourselves 20 minutes of leeway. The fudge inside the cake is really rich and the ice cream just kind of mellows that out.
Although we had some misses, the steak really saved the night. At least now, we know what to avoid and can try other appetizers and sides next time.
