I came here for my last meal in Portland. I couldn't make up my mind. So, I got a little bit of everything. I got the fried sample platter, with a cup of clam chowder, and a marionberry cobber. I spent about $21 all together. Pretty steep for one person, but hey, last meal before I head back to California.
The fried sample platter comes with: Fried cod, fried shrimp and their fried clams. The crust on these babies is pretty good, like a corn meal breading. Not a ton of seasoning, so, pair these with a squeeze of lemon and the sauces they provide and you will do pretty good. For me, the best part of the dish was the shrimp. It had the most flavor and worked best with the sauces.
Next I tried the clam chowder. I think paired with the strong flavors of the fried fish and sauce, you can't really appreciate this one. It wasn't until I finished the rest of it at a later time, that I really got the taste. It's a really hearty, rich dish. It has more potatoes that I am used to, but had good flavor.
Lastly, the marionberry cobbler. What it lacks in presentation is makes up in flavor! Now you can pay a bit more and get a scoop of ice cream, but I choose the whipped topping instead (it was free.) The whip cream is some of the best I have had in a while. The cream melted into the cobbler and created this big mess of a delicious dessert. The berry's aren't overly sweet, but pair well with the bread topping. This, frankly, was my favorite.
The service workers here are also very sweet. I came back constantly asking for a bag or an extra lemon, and they provided without incident.
My verdict? If you are from the Bay area, their sea food isn't going to knock your socks off. If you are hankering for some chowder though, this could hit the spot. YOU SHOULD COME FOR THE COBBLER THOUGH. Do yourself a favor, go to Stumptown, buy yourself a hot coffee and pair it with Mo's cobbler. You will have a good time.
