Yelp
I've been to the northern California wine country a few times, so I've done the "pretentious seated private tasting" and/or winery tour. At this point, what I truly appreciate in a winery visit is merely being able to sidle up to the bar without a reservation, taste the winery's wines, and shoot the breeze with the winery staff and other patrons. If the wine happens to be good, and I buy a bottle to take home, that's a bonus.
From my perspective, Moshin was pretty much the perfect winery visit. I was on a business trip in San Francisco alone, and this was my day "off." I arrived early just after opening, so at first I was the only one at the bar. I typically don't like being the only one at the bar...I don't like flying solo at a very crowded bar either, I prefer a small, manageable gathering where I'm a part of the scene, but I can kinda blend in if I choose and do my whole introvert thing. Well, I didn't have to worry about being awkwardly alone at the bar this time, as the ladies behind the bar here were clearly in a jovial mood, and just a barrel of laughs. I can't say enough about the service - I had the chance to taste a wide variety of wines (seriously, similar to many small wineries in this area of Sonoma, this tasting is an excellent value), and when it came time to taste the dessert wine, they even provided chocolate to pair. I also received some recommendations on other wineries, and good lunch options in Healdsburg.
Tasting is $15, and you get a lot of good wine for that $15. If you want to revisit any of what was tasted, that was allowed and encouraged. As with most wineries, the tasting fee was waived with a purchase. I selected the Dry Creek Zinfandel, which turned out to be my clear favorite...fantastic aroma, and I kept pulling notes of white chocolate and blackberry on the palate. I know this place is known for its Pinot, and while it was tasty, I liked the previous winery's iteration a bit better. Already having a Russian River Pinot in my bag, which was my main mission for this trip, I felt comfortable just going for what I thought was the winery's best wine.
This was a fun visit. This place has the air of a low-key, non-pretentious but hip winery....and it also happens to make enjoyable wine. I didn't dislike any of what I tried.
