How Australia’s Historic Landback Efforts Are Reshaping Travel—On a Global Scale | Condé Nast Traveler

"In February this year, I took an unforgettable walk through Mossman Gorge in Far North Queensland, led by a local Eastern Kuku Yalanji Aboriginal guide. As we wandered through the rainforest that fringed the roaring river, our guide taught us about reciprocity and how the Indigenous people here practice it: never take more than you need, and give the land a chance to regenerate. 'You have to look after Mother Nature, or she won’t look after you,' were his parting words. They have stayed with me ever since."

Absolutely worth visiting Mossman Gorge. The bus is worth the cost - it is very hot and humidity. Make sure you do the 2km loop hike to experience the real beauty. The cafe prices were really reasonable and the food was very good. We purchased sandwiches and a cake to eat during our hike - sitting by the beautiful Gorge having lunch was absolutely the right choice.

This place does not disappoint! We got a bit off track from the maps and lack of signage at splits on the trails but overall it was gorgeous and pleasant to swim in, cold and refreshing! There was a teeny tiny frog like fingernail size tiny! We walked up from the parking lot at the visitor center which had free parking. It takes about 25 minutes at a normal-brisk speed.

I'm going to give you the advice I wish someone had given me. WALK FIRST, SWIM AFTER. The walk is so hot. The swimming is so refreshing. Amazing experience. Absolutely do this. Get the shuttle bus and buy stuff from the centre to support this place. It's a national treasure. Do the 2km loop walk it's beautiful!

The 2.4km Circuit Track takes about an hour at a leisurely pace, guiding you through the heart of this ancient ecosystem. You'll encounter massive boulder formations polished by millennia of flowing water, and crystal-clear pools that reflect the towering rainforest canopy. You'll want to pause along the way to absorb the symphony of sounds and scents that make the Daintree so magical. Mossman Gorge features a sheltered swimming hole where the pristine rainforest water flows around spectacular granite boulders and a sandy beach forms a perfect entry point into the water. Anyone planning on swimming should exercise caution and observe local conditions before entering the water. Swimming is not recommended for inexperienced swimmers, elderly or small children. Rainforest Walks There are multiple rainforest walks at Mossman Gorge that range from an easy 250 metres to a more moderate 2.5km rainforest circuit track. Mossman Gorge Visitor Centre also offers dreamtime walks conducted by local Indigenous elders who will guide you through the sacred space demonstrating traditional medicines and bush tucker. You will enjoy local bush tea and homemade damper at the end of our Dreamtime Tour. Comfortable shoes and loose fitting clothes are recommended. Wildlife Experiences Expect to see giant stranger figs and ancient Spurwood Tree's, the impressive bright blue Ulysses butterfly and perhaps even a Boyd's Rainforest Dragon hiding amongst the rainforest. Beware of stinging trees with their distinctive heart shaped leaves. Transport Mossman Gorge is located 20km north of Port Douglas and is easily accessible by car with ample parking at the Mossman Gorge Centre. BTS Port Douglas Bus provides a daily shuttle bus service to the Gorge that departs Port Douglas at 9am and 12 noon daily, returning in the afternoon it departs the Mossman Gorge Centre at 12:45pm and 2:45pm A shuttle bus is available from the Mossman Gorge Centre to the heart of the Gorge, departing every 15 minutes between 8am and 5:30pm daily, visitors are asked to use the shuttle bus as there is no walking path to the Gorge from the Visitor Centre. I have been going here since I was a young kid, and it's still incredible. A little disappointed that you now have to pay $15 per person to catch a bus up, as it was always free and open to the public. I understand what they have done, but Australia and it's natural beauty should be free for all to see & enjoy. Still, The most amazing swimming holes, scenery and river. Cold fresh water. Must go!

Google
Mossman Gorge was by far one of our Big Lap highlights. Ok, it cost $15 each, to which I normally feel should not be charged to see nature. But understandably the charge was for our bus ride up to the gorge which in itself is environmentally friendly, not having cars going in and out. Plus the cost would obviously go to the upkeep of the walking tracks and hanging bridge etc, which were in very good condition. In addition, you actually didn't have to pay the cost, but you would be walking up to the gorge, which is not an easy walk. That being said, $15 I am ok with. The water was super cold, and one of the freshest, cleanest, mountain stream dips I have ever experienced. Plus it is a gorgeous green colour. Absolutely stunning!

Great place to visit on the hot day! We went for a loop hike first which took us about 50 min on a slow pace to finish a loop. Then came back to the water and enjoyed relaxing cool down bath after sweaty workout)) You park at the center and shuttle takes you to the gorge. Shuttle is going every 15 min. Cost for shuttle was 37.50 for 2 adults, 2 teens. Park entrance is free.

Yelp
Mossman Gorge is an idyllic spot within the rainforest. The gorge has crystal-clear waters tumbling over ancient granite boulders which creates perfect swimming spots right in nature. We hiked around a bit. Fun fact: The boulders at Mossman Gorge are said to be over 400 million years old!

Yelp
When we asked the locals what we should check out, everyone recommended the Mossman Gorge. People told us the water would be very cold and you would have to be brave to jump in. I was afraid to jump in and swim around, but to me it wasn't cold. The water was extremely refreshing on a hot day in December last year. On some days, they don't advise going into the water so you'll have to pay attention to the signs that they have. If you want to visit, you can purchase a shuttle bus ticket in the Mossman Gorge Centre. At the time, we paid $8.90 AUD per person. For those who don't want to go in the water, I would recommend putting on some bug spray.

Yelp
While much more glam than I was expecting, Mossman Gorge is an absolute must-stop on your trek through northern Queensland. Full on rain forrest, river, waterfalls, swimming holes, boulder-jumping, boardwalks, it's everything you signed up for and one of the best ways to beat the region's crazy heat and humidity. I'd recommend shelling out the $8.50 for the shuttle bus to and from the visitors centre (rather than walking the 2km yourself) so that you can start right at the base of the action, but if you're a baller on a budget, know that a cool, refreshing river awaits if you decide to trudge up there yourself. While I'm sure there are multiple hiking options, we went along the quick rainforest track loop (an easy-grade 2.5 km) and then made our own way down to the river, hiking from watering hole to watering hole. Highly recommended. Just watch out for those dastardly mozzies - they are the only thing that can put a damper on all this beauty. Spray up before you head out, and bring the can with you!

Yelp
Great outing for seeing the rain forest up close and personal. While it seems that most go for the opportunity to swim in the a rocky stretch the river, we mainly wanted to walk to the 2km circuit through the forest. It's an easy trail, though the day we went it felt like 1000% humidity. The suspension bridge is pretty cool as well. Great afternoon outing.
