Mostra Coffee Debuts North County Cafe | Eater San Diego

"Opening today in 4S Ranch, Mostra Coffee's second location again features its signature MAVAM performance espresso machine and its menu of specialty coffee drinks; its most popular beverages include the Bibingka Creme Brulee Latte and the brand-new Turon Cappuccino, and the 4S Ranch store will add beer and wine service in the coming months while the company rolls out express ordering and curbside pickup and preps further expansion to Mira Mesa (in the Mira Mesa Mall) and planned shops in San Francisco, New York, and Manila." - Candice Woo

Mostra Coffee Embarks on Expansion Journey | Eater San Diego

"Since being named Roast Magazine’s 2020 Roaster of the Year, I’ve seen Mostra Coffee expand its product line and footprint beyond its Carmel Mountain headquarters: it launched a line of instant coffee and will open its second café this month in the North County community of 4S Ranch. Featuring its signature MAVAM performance espresso machine and a menu of popular coffee concoctions—including the Bibingka Crème Brûlée Latte—the café will introduce a St. Patrick’s Day drink called Sláinte that pairs their Brazil Nitro cold brew with a green, Bailey’s-inspired but nonalcoholic cloud cream. The company champions the Philippine coffee industry through direct-trade relationships with coffee farmers in the Philippines and has more growth planned, including other specialty drinks, beer and wine service, a third café in Mira Mesa, and branches in San Francisco, New York, and Manila." - Candice Woo

Google
This latte was so unbelievably mid, I deeply regret the $8 I spent on this. The menu describes a Bibingka Crème Brûlée with “house vanilla syrup | toasted coconut powder | milk infused with philippine coconut and vanilla bean”. What I got was plain espresso with whole milk, a pump of monin vanilla, and nothing even remotely resembling coconut or infusion. The creme brulee was just sad, the sugar was not melted at all on the sides and completely burnt in the middle. I asked the barista to torch it a bit more so it actually turns into a brulee, and she tried to tell me that it is supposed to be grainy and crunchy like that 😭

Are they going outnof business? Closing down? Bc it certainly looks like it. Out of many things.. out of forks? Drinks still but above avg. Won't hate on their coffee but place is dirty, atmosphere is ruined with "out of ..." signs. Unprofessional. And no sneeze guard? Very disappointed. Don't understand 4.4 star.

Been a Mostra customer long before this location opened. Used to frequent the Carmel valley location and was beyond excited when this 4s location opened up as I lived right nearby. When first opened it was a solid 5/5. Staff, clean, great drinks. Some time back something changed (maybe ownership) and everything has gone downhill. Drinks are mid at best. They are always short on pastry’s/options. They are constantly out of certain menu items. Bathroom is filthy. Still better then Starbucks but is sad to see such a great place get worse and worse with time. I wouldn’t bother making the trip.

Google
This location is NOT the place to visit if you want to experience Mostra coffee. Do yourself a favor and check out the one in Carmel Mountain. The staff at this location is not welcoming at all and the coffee quality is so far below what you will experience at the other locations. I dont know what going on with this spot in 4s, but Mostra help them be more like Carmel Mountain with quality Maybe more training and customer service awareness?

I love the Filipino-inspired coffee flavors! The barista ringing us up (I wish I got his name!) was very nice, helpful, and patient. I kept asking for the Bibingka Creme Brûlée Latte and the Creme Brûlée Latte ICED and he reminded me both times that they’re only served hot. There’s clear text at the top of the menu that these drinks are only served hot (due to the way they torch the sugar) and I didn’t see it haha! So thank you for being patient with me :D He offered that he could make me an iced latte with Bibingka cream but instead, I opted for the Iced Campfire Latte ($6.35) and it was delicious! My husband got the Creme Brûlée Latte ($6.35) and my sister-in-law ordered the Iced Chagaccino ($6.75). They are all so good and tasty. The place itself is very bright, trendy, and clean. They have a few tables inside for 2-3 people and there are a good amount of benches and tables outside. 5 stars for this location, service, and coffee. I’d love to try out other flavors next time!

Google
On this beautiful Sunday sunny day, I visited another amazing coffee shop, and the lady who took my order was very polite and beautiful! I received aesthetic pleasure while I was buying coffee and waiting for my order! Would I recommend this establishment to anyone else? Yes, sure! I will be happy to recommend it to my friends, because after you leave there, your soul feels better!

Google
This place was hard to find because the only signage was on the glass doors and it was plastered with posters for Halloween advertisements. It’s next door to Sea Salt Pho & Sushi. Plenty of parking in the plaza. I got the fall special for my mom. The pumpkin cloud cream cold brew. She’s used to Starbucks cold brew and was shocked how this wasn’t overly sweet (which was a good thing) and how it had so much boldness. It had the right amount of pumpkin kick to it. I’m a honey lavender latte kind a girl but have yet to order that here or the RB location. I seem to be ordering the wrong thing. I took a risk ordering something completely different. Got the spicy gimme so mocha. It’s chocolate with espresso and Boyd’s hot sauce. At first sip, it had that rich and creamy coffee then once you swallow, you’re left with a spicy after taste. For sure not for everyone. I love it minus the spicy. After a few sips, I was over this drink when I could see the oil dripping down inside the walls of the cup, as if I’m drinking chili oil. I wouldn’t recommend drinking this on an empty stomach.

Google
Celebrated National Beer Day here with their BBQ & Brews event! (side note… they do have a membership where members can eat/drink an hour before a scheduled event which we weren’t aware of so we had to patiently wait while everyone else ate and drank around us 🫠) BBQ featured: Red Oak Mostra Coffee Smoked Tri-Tip and Sinigang & Maple Sugar Cured Cold Smoked Scottish Salmon Choconana Cold Brew & Bibingka Crème Brûlée latte Everything was delicious! They seem to offer pretty popular breweries on tap and in bottles, mainly due to their collabs (Mostra is one of the more popular coffee roasters that breweries use).

Yelp
Ordering through the app makes the whole process easy, especially during busy hours -- no long wait times, and your order is ready to grab and go. I also appreciate that they've expanded their pastry selection. I recently tried the ham & cheese croissant and the corned beef pandesal crunch. Both were delicious, but the cornbeef hit the spot. The pandesal did take a bit longer to come out though. Overall, still a great experience every visit.

Yelp
I'm serious! You guys are SINKING in quality, both drinks and service. Idk if you're taking just incredibly bad business advice, but focus on the management of your cafes before you start opening more stores. Also, you're bar is incredibly dirty and whoever was your shift does not have any situational awareness nor ability to properly staff (ie being out on the floor instead of being in back while there are a shit ton of people in line).
google avatar

Apoorva R.

Yelp
I tried their creme brulee latte and it was nice! Would have liked if it was more creamy or flavorful. It did not look the same as the latte in their pictures. My husband tried the turon latte and it was okay.. again not flavorful. Was expecting a little more from this place based on the pictures and reviews. The service was very quick. They have indoor and outdoor seating.

Yelp
I really enjoyed the coffee we got here, unique flavors that blended well and had a comfortable vibe. Staff was so friendly and helpful. Very clean and inviting inside. But they were out of practically everything outside of a small menu. Couldn't buy beans, no extras for purchase while we approach the holidays. Someone needs to work on their orders and stock enough to last for the season. I know some of it is suppliers, but I still expected a little something to be available. Hopefully they have some beans at least next time.

Yelp
I'm not local to the area, but anytime I drive to San Diego to visit family I make it a point to come here. I've had all their lattes and they never disappoint. You always get the tiniest hint of what you ordered which is not overbearing. Today I got their Ube crème brûlée latte and it was delicious. The baristas are always friendly, the place is clean, and not big. There's few seating inside, with much more seating outside. Love this place. I recommend!

Yelp
Probably one of my favorite coffee shops anywhere. This fantastic coffee shop roasts their own beans and as a matter of fact, they're award-winning in that regard. I've been here a bunch of times and the service is always friendly. I also love buying bags of their beans, especially the barrel age ones whenever available. I've never not liked coffee from this place. There's also a good variety of the classic type drinks on the menu as well as some fun creations that they do that's unique to their background. I love getting the regular coffee, but on one of my recent trips I got one of their fun lattes where they use a blow torch to caramelize the top. Their roots or history or at least the way I found out about them is that they were closely tied to the craft beer world. A long time ago a lot of breweries that I loved were using their coffee in the beer they brewed. And as a matter of fact, I was one of their founding members of their coffee membership that combined the best of both worlds for me. - coffee and craft beer. This place is super popular now it seems and they discontinued their membership a little while back, but it was so fun while it lasted. They even held yearly beer festivals for a time. And the beers showcased were the ones that used their coffee. Good times I even got to see the current lead singer of Journey perform (Arnel Pineda) at the last festival I attended.

Yelp
I love their beans, especially ghost bear. Their drinks are on the pricier side for speciality drinks but they are high quality. I came for an event pre-order for Pandan treats and the line for pickup was very long. Be prepared to wait if they are having a special event. Lots of parking in the plaza, and outdoor seating in the area in between from Mendocino Farms.

Yelp
Went here for my first time but don't recommend the Vietnamese Iced coffee it tastes very premade. I kindly asked if I could get something else and explained it was my first time here and was still charged $6 for a new drink, exchanged with a rude look at me...

Yelp
Cute place. I came 30 minutes to closing and they were out of all the drinks I wanted to try. I got the salted caramel latte. It was good. Service is friendly. I'll go back next time to try something different.

Yelp
Great service. Friendly staff, drinks are always on point. This mostra location has more seating than the other location. I prefer this Location

Yelp
This is probably the 3rd location I've been to. Stopped by today and decor is the same as the other ones I've been to, same style. Went in to look what they had and it didn't seem like they had much. There was 2 platters or snacks with maybe 3-4 items on them. Nothing in the cold case, so it looked like they were closing down and selling the remainder of their product. The drink I order was ok nothing too special. Was hoping for a sweet surprise but no surprise came to the flavor. I totally love supporting local and Mostra is local but I haven't felt that wow factor in a while here. Service was good. Also ordered the ham and cheese croissant and it was fluffy, inside was ok, tasted old.

Yelp
I only came here because their Google review photos showed real coffee mugs. When I got to the counter the cashier looked at me like I was dumb for asking if they had mugs for people dining in. Then he proceeded to zone out and got our coffee orders wrong. The whole vibe of the place was weird. Messy and the workers looked like they rolled out of bed and don't have uniforms. All the tables are wobbly. I'm sure people just grab their coffee and quickly leave here but honestly the vibe is just not what I was hoping for.

Yelp
Super quick & easy to get a coffee here. I think I was in and out in like two minutes. Got an iced Vietnamese coffee. Super strong but just what I needed. I like how they have other drinks that are Filipino inspired, I have to try those next time. Super nice ambiance, good to study. Seating indoor and outside.

Yelp
Love Mostra! Locally owned and service is always on point - we love Taylor ! They are very dog friendly

Yelp
I'm not sure if I'm loving the quality of Mostra Coffee anymore. I've been to all of their locations and my favorite one has to be Bankers Hill because they make the drinks so well over there! I work more north in SD, and I've been to this location and the other in Carmel Mtn, and the drinks aren't made well. So consistency of the quality of the drinks varies across storefronts, unfortunately. For instance, my matcha yesterday was sad. It wasn't properly mixed as you can see the clumps at the bottom. I wish I took a picture of the bottom I don't expect a hand whisk, but I expect a hand mix with a spoon, lol. I watched him and he just mixed it by swirling the cup. They also don't measure their syrups or powders I noticed, all by eye. Their display also has very minimal to no items to choose from, it's always almost empty.

Yelp
The Chase: Amazing coffee, fast and friendly service, spacious location even when crowded This place is a go! The long: The people here are friendly, and they serve excellent artisanal coffee. The people behind the counter know their beans and roasts and communicate this knowledge in a pleasant non-condescending way. The coffee is excellent and they have win several roaster and barista competitions (I believe best area roaster in 2020). I believe they were also in 2024 awarded the best small business in San Diego. they deserve the accolades. To get back to the coffee, which is the reason that you're here, it really is very good and they know how to actually make the coffee, from an espresso even to their drip, the coffee is truly excellent. They also have beer, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that their IPA selection has an ABV below seven (which means you can actually enjoy the taste without falling over). I mentioned this because they also supply the coffee for many coffee stouts (a small collection of which is displayed in the back.) If you haven't guessed, I really enjoyed my experience there. I did not try any of the food so perhaps on my next visit I will add to this review. That said, if you were in the area and you want some damn good coffee this is the place.

Yelp
A solid third-wave coffee spot that consistently delivers on quality and vibe. The flat white is smooth and perfectly balanced--rich espresso, silky foam, and no bitterness. Seasonal lattes like salted caramel or honey lavender are also great choices, flavorful without being overly sweet. The space is bright and clean with indoor and outdoor seating. There's a relaxed, neighborhood feel, and the baristas are friendly and efficient, even during busy hours. Only downside is the parking--can be tight during peak times. But once inside, it's a great spot to sip, work, or catch up with a friend. If you're looking for well-crafted coffee in a calm, welcoming setting, Mostra 4S Ranch hits the mark.

Yelp
Stumbled upon on this coffee shop. We walked in get an espresso after lunch. Cool place and atmosphere, with an interesting custom espresso machine. When ordering, I specifically asked for a ceramic/glass, no paper cup, however the teenager said we only have paper. This ruined the whole experience. The single shot (in a paper cup) came slightly cold but with a nice foam and aroma. The flavor was ok and bold. My suggestion is if you are serving relatively higher quality coffee than chain shops have the ceramic cups on hand for real coffee drinkers, as an option. It is not about the caffeine much but for the experience.
google avatar

Yelp
I loved it here! The creme brûlée latte and the overnight oats were the best things I've had in awhile. I can't wait to order these again! The hot chocolate was flavorful too. I highly recommend this spot if you're in the area!

Yelp
I think about getting their Ube crème brulee coffee all the time but I live in the OC

Yelp
so many unique flavors! i went in a group and we all ordered different drinks so i got to try a lot of their speciality drinks: cookiebutter latte, blueberry pancakes latte, turon latte, binbingka latte, honey lavender latte. My favorite was the bibingka and turon latte the flavor really came through and i loved how they torched the top. other notes: the bathroom was pretty dirty
google avatar

Yelp
Best coffee shop in San Diego. The drinks are good even the non caffeinated ones. The fact that you get to watch them make your coffee is awesome great staff. The place has a fun outdoor play area which makes it cool for the kids. Food=5 Service=5 Ambiance=5

Yelp
Best Latte I have ever had!! The TURON CRÈME BRULÉE LATTE, made with their homemade banana milk inspired by a Filipino dessert. It is sweet, strong, & crunchy! Even on a busy Monday morning you can order your coffee and have it ready in no time! There's a huge parking lot and a couple spots right Infront of the cafe. It's quiet, there's always a couple people working from there inside and outside seating.

Yelp
I come here often while waiting for my kid at dance, and it's become one of my favorite spots! They offer ube coffee, which I absolutely love--not just for the unique flavor but also for the beautiful color. The coffee is excellent, with a delightful taste and aroma that makes each sip an experience. You can really appreciate the caffeine kick and the rich, inviting smell. Since discovering this gem, I've stopped going to Starbucks and started exploring more local coffee shops. Highly recommend giving this place a try!
google avatar

Yelp
I ordered the creme brulee later with oat milk and it was great! Good amount of sugar topping that was roasted and the espresso to milk ratio was perfect. This location has a lot of great outdoor seating, good for dog owners, not so much indoors for a larger group. I went on a Friday morning and it wasn't too busy, there was a small line that took about 15 mins to get our drink.
google avatar

Yelp
My son introduced me to Mostra coffee. Good quality coffee, not cheap. You are paying for quality coffee. I always grab a couple of bags of got coffee when we are in town.

Yelp
One of the worst lattes if ever had. Poorly pressed mixed and made. Good service so it dosent get a one star
google avatar

Yelp
I met up with some friends here and we sat outside because it was pretty crazy with the grand opening next door. I ordered a hot ube latte and a cookie! My drink had pretty latte art and the cookie was filled with chocolate chips and coconut flakes. I enjoyed my drink and would love to try their other offerings next time!
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped by here on a Tuesday morning hoping to get a call done before going into the office. It's definitely busy and loud, so not the best place for a call, but good if you need to study/ get some work done independently. The coffee was really good! It was my first time there so I tried their coconut cold brew. It was definitely strong, but also refreshing. The parking & service was also great.
google avatar

Marissa M.

Yelp
Got the chagaccino for the first time at Mostra today. I usually get it iced but am actually glad I forgot to request it that way because it was so good hot on this brisk San Diego winter morning. I love that they have this on the menu! I also appreciate being asked my milk preference, bring lactose intolerance, haha. It was yummy and strong enough to get my butt movin' and groovin' for the rest of the day and a 13 mile bike ride in the evening. Yew! Also, this coffee company is the coolest! I went to their Mostraland event and it was so much fun with a great cause. Plus, being native, I love supporting local :)

Yelp
Great space for a coffee. They are not packed like the other places and they have DELICIOUS drinks. I especially love the drinks with Filipino themed names, after Filipino deseerts and dessert flavors. They have a "Bibingka Creme Brûlée Latte", "Ube Wan-Kenobi", and "Turon Cappuccino". We ordered a "Chagaccino" hot & "Ube Wan-Kenobi" cold and we loved out drinks! They have a display of the Star Wars themed brew collaborations that they have done with other breweries and it is very cool. They didn't have pastries the day we went (on a Sunday (2:45p) and we really love that with our coffee so 4 stars. We will be back, maybe they will have Filipino desserts!

Sera H.

Yelp
I'm giving a four star review beucase I'm being generous. I'd give lower due to the service but that wouldn't be fair to the business as a whole. First, the coffee, it's good. But idk if it's the service that made me not like the coffee anymore. Taylor is a sweetheart, she belongs at customer service but the other baristas need to plaster a smile on their faces. If you make a drink incorrectly as a consumer we should be able to respectfully ask if they can fix it and the barista shouldn't be upset about this. They make you feel like shit for asking and I get a lot of ppl don't speak up if their drink is made incorrectly but spending 8 bucks on a drink and not having made correctly and served to you with a grouchy face does not feel good. Better to make coffee at the house, sometimes ppl come to coffee shops for the ambience and service but this particular barista- lisbeth or that's what her co worker told me her name is - if it's even true, was beyond rude. I felt like o had to be overly kind and say thank you and please while she was having a temper tantrum. Taylor rocks, keep it up.

N N.

Yelp
Great coffee and nice but simple atmosphere. Service was very good. Love when baristas take the time (esp when it's not busy) to explain their popular drinks and what the customer might like. She was nice, polite, friendly and patient. The coffee was awesome. Will come back when in the area.
google avatar

Natasha Y.

Yelp
This place is sometimes a hit or miss depending on who makes your drink so I can understand some of the negative reviews. I never have a problem with my drink as long as my favorite person here makes it. She's amazing and makes it easy to come back. Wish it was a little closer to me because they are only open until 5 so usually can only can make it to the other location in time. I've been opting for almond milk in my mocha now because they don't have the coconut milk I prefer, but I'm still hopeful that it will come back soon.
google avatar

Yelp
This was my very first time at a Mostra coffee shop, and the banana bread I ordered was awful: it tasted stale and despite being warmed for two minutes was icey in the middle. I've had many banana breads at Starbucks and they're tasty.

Yelp
Loved how pretty this coffee shop was!! We stopped by Mostra after being recommended it by a frequent visitor. Luckily for us, they were open on Labor Day and there was no line when we visited. I really wanted to try their Signature Brûlée drinks, but unfortunately they don't make it served cold and since the heat was already ramping up we opted for a Honey Lavender Latte. I typically really enjoy Honey Lavender flavors but I didn't like the drink very much here. It tasted rather soapy instead of a sweet, flowery flavor that I was looking for to my disappointment :( I'd rate it 3.5 stars overall since the employees here were super nice and made our drinks quickly! I'd visit again, but would probably avoid their Honey Lavender Latte in the future.

Yelp
Mostra you are my new obsession. Your campfire drink is the most well-balanced sweet without being sugary coffee forward drink I've had in a long time. Your staff is knowledgeable and friendly and seems to love what they do. We also enjoy your roasted beans at home but nothing is as good as having one of your baristas whip up something to drink. I am just bummed your location is not anywhere near my normal adventures.

Yelp
One of my favorite coffee shops in San Diego! The last two times I came to visit my friend we've made a stop at Mostra. They have my favorite Ube latte! Have not had one as good on the east coast - yet! My other friend ordered the creme brûlée latte. Both were so good! They also offer milk alternatives. Every time I've come the staff have been really kind and super helpful. The decor inside is also so cute. Lots of really sweet details from their bags of beans to their tiles. The ambiance is really chill. Lots of options outdoors to sit - picnic tables and lounge chairs, and a few options indoors. Love love the ambiance and drinks. The pastries also look good, and they are always low on stock probably because they are so tasty. Will always request a stop when I'm in town.

Yelp
Gorgeous. Check. Aesthetically pleasing. Check. Great coffee. Check. Service. Super check. I'm glad I heard great things about this place and then actually got to try it out for myself. The worker behind the counter (blonde, so sweet!) helped me out by explaining some of their coffees and helping me pick something that I would like. Coffee soaked with coconut??? Ughhhh yum. I loved it and the spacious clean feeling inside. You go Mostra.

Yelp
yum and yum! Tried their seasonal cookie butter latte with an extra shot of expresso and loved it! I would have added more sweetener but other than that yummy! It was quick and they were lovely to talk with. Give the shot a try if you need to do work or get a drink with friends, pls do

Yelp
One of my favorite cafés in San Diego, for the best coffee, study spot, and service! The staff are all friendly, and Journey is the sweetest barista and has lots of recommendations :) Many of the honey lavender lattes I've tried (including at the Carmel Mountain Mostra) only have a strong lavender flavor and no honey taste, so Journey makes my honey lavender latte with extra honey each time upon request. After asking what I prefer and me responding with lavender drinks, Journey also offered to make an iced lavender matcha, which is not on the menu! Both drinks are perfectly sweet and refreshing, and the iced lavender matcha, like Journey said, "tastes like froot loops but in a good way." And even at this location, Journey's honey lavender latte is the best because she mixes the honey in with espresso instead of drizzling it on top of the ice. The space is clean and has a lovely interior design-- the music is not too loud either and is a wonderful place to study/work. Compared to the Carmel Mountain Mostra, this location is more bright and airy, and is definitely worth going to!

Yelp
Been going to Mostra for about 6 years now. The cleanliness has been slowly going down as has the wait times for drinks, but today was unacceptable. An employee was chatting and being hospitable, but was clearly giving the cold shoulder and ignoring other people in the shop, and it was very clear who he was choosing to interact with. Also, almost knocking me over while I was trying to exit with my hands full, another customer had to grab the door and apologized even. Knowing the owners of this business I am appalled this type of service exists in their stores. You will lose more customers than me if this continues.

Yelp
Recommend. Purchased a small cappuccino. Was absolutely delicious and how a cappuccino should be. Polite, welcoming staff and nice ambiance. Not cheap, but you are paying for good quality. Recommend.

Yelp
I came a few times and I don't want to go here anymore. The coffee was ok. Not the best. What got me irritated is how they call out coffee orders. when you don't get customers names, people will grab other people's orders! There is no way to stop them from grabbing your order. I've seen 2 people go up to the same coffee. I didn't realize my coffee was called because someone grabbed it and I thought it was his. People order the same coffee. Just saying and when you are super backed up then there is no order keeping track of who's next. I don't remember who was there before me. Is that what I'm supposed to do? I can be patient and not complain because yeah they were busy but the way they do things is ridiculous. They get backed up and super busy and no organization whatsoever.

Yelp
I love this cafe! The staff are very friendly and service is quick. When you walk into this cafe, you can tell that you're at a higher quality cafe. The coffee does not let you down either. It is some of the best coffee in San Diego in my opinion. It is a little bit pricier than other cafes, so I come here when I feel like treating myself.
