Get in the St. Patrick’s Day Spirit all Season Long at These Chicago Spots | Eater

"Mother Hubbard’s has a 30-year history in Chicago as a beloved neighborhood pub and sports bar offering something for anyone who visits. When it comes to St. Patrick’s Day, the spot has everything you want. Think festive decor, tasty comfort food (like sausage burgers, tots, and nachos), and a lengthy drink menu. For St. Patrick’s Day cocktails, try an Old Fashioned with Jameson Original or a Jameson Triple Triple Collins. Or go for happy hour to enjoy discounted Jameson Irish Whiskey shots. Then, it’s just a matter of what you’d like to do next: catch a game on the 35-plus TVs, play pool or another bar game, or maybe even make some new friends. It’s St. Patrick’s Day, after all. Maybe you should try your luck." - Ariel Kanter

Pop in for a cozy Irish coffee with Jameson Black Barrel, or if it was a stressful shopping trip, maybe a glass nice and neat will do." - Ariel Kanter

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Eve at These Spirited Chicago Pubs | Eater

"A River North mainstay for more than 30 years, Mother Hubbard’s brings together the best of a neighborhood pub, sports bar, and party pad. If you want to watch the game, you can catch it from pretty much any spot in the house (they have 45 TVs). There are also pool tables and arcade games if your crew gets competitive. As for the bar, there are excellent local beers on tap, hard seltzers, and all the classic cocktails. But for St. Patrick’s Eve, we think a Jameson-spiked Old Fashioned will do the trick. It is an Irish celebration, after all." - Ariel Kanter

The energy was definitely in the room. My party of 8 entered and sat ourselves at a table. The bar was completely filled. We sat unattended for sometime. It was difficult identifying staff. After a few more moment I noticed a staff member, who directed me to the servers. It would be helpful if there was a uniform type garment available. Anyhow servers were engaged immensely at the bar. We eventually ordered multiple drinks and light food items. The services was quick and efficient. The food was cook to perfection. Drink were exactly what we expected. The server checked in a few times. Seeming the attention was to the bar area. It seemed that the server provided our check although we did not suggest we were close out.

Great place to spend time. The owners are awesome and kind every time. The have beer, pizza and a lot of other options. If you are in the Downtown and looking for a good time, don’t hesitate and go there.

My husband and I came here on Valentine’s Day with two other couples. We stopped in for a snack and a drink. We sat down immediately and were greeted pretty quickly. We ordered chicken tacos and chips and salsa. Both were pretty tasty. We each had a drink, but our server never came back to see if we wanted another drink. We enjoyed the music on TouchTunes.

Even on one of the busiest nights at the bar, Clyde and Ray were incredible. Clyde was quick, professional, and somehow remembered my drink after just one order. Ray brought great energy, made everyone feel welcome, and kept things running smoothly. Their service stood out in a packed crowd—friendly, fast, and totally on point. These two are a big reason I’ll be coming back!

I hadn’t been here in years from when it used to have a sour or sewer smell. If you know you know. However, I am glad there wasn’t a smell issue when I went last week to watch The NBA finals. Good job! Food: I got Chicken Tenders and Fries which were cool! They do have wings which many people get but they are jumbo. I’m not a fan of jumbo wings but don’t let me stop you from trying them! Drinks: I had a Whiskey and Ginger Ale and it was ok. Service: The server was good and nice. I didn’t get her name but all went well. Atmosphere: It was full with sports fans, typical sports dive bar-loud energy. There’s a jukebox as well! Final Thoughts: I would return. I did arrive before there was a bouncer at the door/carding etc. I noticed recent reviews about rude service at the door. That’s a n/a for me however if I do return with bouncer door service that is anything like what I’ve read and I’m disrespected, please believe I won’t be staying.

Cool place! Went on st Patrick’s day so we didnt get to really experience it. But nice, clean, and staff was really friendly

We had a great time here! Our bartender was Clyde but everyone was extremely friendly and it was a great choice for our first time in Chicago!

Google
Second time visiting this place while traveling for work. Great atmosphere to kick back, have some drinks, and play some pool. Rylee the waitress is the best. She checks in constantly, never makes you wait for a drink, is very friendly and takes amazing care of her customers.

Yelp
Came here during St Patrick's Day weekend and omg it's jammed packed in here but thankfully I was able to find a seat at the bar Bartenders were doing their thing and getting a drink wasn't that hard considering how busy it was Drinks are decent Prices are reasonable I came I saw I drank On to the next

Yelp
I will preface this post by saying I was born n raised in Chicago, however, 20 years serving in the Army ultimately took me away. I now live in VA. Anytime I get home I try some place new. I've tried to get into Mother Hubbard's on 3 occasions for their wings n the place was packed. Today I finally got in! The wings were jumbo, hot, n crispy! We got the plain with buffalo sauce on the side n Cajun garlic butter. My Cesar salad was fresh. The fries were shoe string n hot! My Long Island's were strong, just how I like them. They would have gotten 5 stars, except for the fact that after we finished eating, a ROACH crawled across the table!!!!!! Yikes! So, the ambience needs a lot of work. Unfortunately, I won't be back... n it's a damn shame too cuz the wings were on point!!!

Yelp
Perfect hole in the wall sports bar. Fun time and great spot to grab a drink and watch the game.

Yelp
Claudio is a fantastic bartender. He was not only attentive, personable, and fun, but he got everything right. He even introduced us to his "Love Shot", which was one of the best drinks I have ever had! Would 10 out of 10 recommend this bar simply based on Claudio's service.

Yelp
Great bar for meeting up with friends for drinks. The bartenders do a great job of keeping up with the after hours crowd.

Yelp
Nice casual sports bar with lots of TVs and a pool table! Was able to grab a table on a Saturday night. Food and drinks were good. Service is a little slow, but very friendly when you just grab their attention. Nice little casual place to stop by with friends!

Yelp
Overall, a solid sports bar! I will say this is a great place to watch games with ample TVs. It is a nice dive sports bar with good service. I will say the food is solid thought of it like your favorite item you would get from a cafeteria. Do expect frozen tater tots and can cheese but still with some good flavor. I will say pricing wise I think it's not the greatest value but kind of par for river north.

Yelp
Visiting Chicago, came to watch the nba conference finals. Dive sports bar - lots of TV's, people were friendly and service was excellent - no complaints.

Yelp
100/10 Must visit! Staff is very friendly, you can tell by the environment. I'm on a work trip and this has now become an EASY city staple. Honorary mentions to their management, Shane! and his extremely helpful team, Riley and Tee. Those are only three of the countless Individual that made an out of towner feel at home. 100/10 review. Thank you!

Yelp
We were looking for a place to watch football, and we certainly found one! Mother Hubbard's had enough TVs that every game was being shown on at least two TVs each. The crowd was all football fans, so the place was lively with everyone cheering and jeering the TVs and their games/teams of interest. We got a great spot at a table to watch our game plus keep tabs on some of the others. We were well attended to by 4 different servers and I had a new drink sitting in front of me before I had even finished the one I was drinking. The reason for the 3-star despite the great crowd vibe and service was because they chose one game to be heard in the entire bar, and the volume was SO LOUD! Especially when the broadcast went to commercial breaks - the commercials were deafening. At one point I asked about the volume and my server responded, "So you want me turn it up?" Which I thought was a cute response, but I also figured the only reason she had such a cute and witty response that quickly teed up was because I wasn't the first patron to ask about the volume. I suggested she "try turning it down and wait and see if someone asks you to turn it up." Although she told me it wasn't possible, I do think the volume went down the tiniest bit after that, or maybe I had just lost some hearing at that point. The other reason for the lower rating was the tots. Granted, it's the only food we ordered, so maybe other dishes are delicious, but the "cheese" on the tots was like salt-flavored cheese colored goo. The buffalo sauce however was so powerful that the lack of cheese-tasting cheese sauce was almost unnoticeable. All in all, it was raining and we were desperate to find a spot close to our hotel where we could have some drinks and comfortably watch an entire football game, and despite the decibels, Mother Hubbard's delivered.

Yelp
I really enjoy this place for what it is. This is a quintessential chicago sports bar. Numerous televisions around bar area with touch tunes to bring one into the party and pool tables. Bathrooms need attention but usable (college bar feel). No frills menu, drinks but does the job. Bartenders attentive. Open until 5 am.

Yelp
As my best friend's favorite sports bar in River North, Mother Hubbard lived up to that during St. Paddy's. They were prepared with green beer and Jell-O shots to start off the day. The staff is super attentive and kept cleaning so that nothing accumulated and got disgusting. They even made sure that the bagpipers made their way in to perform a couple of songs... and still there were sports still on. The DJ seemed like he barely knew what he was doing but his playlist wasn't too terrible. Kinda happy we made our way in here and had a good time.
google avatar

Yelp
Great place to watch sports they can play almost any game and great cheap food. Love this place

Brooke T.

Yelp
I was just thinking about this and felt I had to write a review! I was there a few weeks ago and I had an incredible server Lyla! She was the ONLY server I could see but she still managed to take great care of my table and clean other tables. The food was good and the atmosphere was fun as well! Highly recommend!

Yelp
cheese curds were phenomenal!!!! i think i got buffalo tater tots and those were very good too. drinks were small but i was content with them. it was very crowded, loved the punch bag machine and the pool tables, and i hated the music. the bathroom was clean. lots of seating and lots of tvs.
google avatar

Eric J.

Yelp
Came in here midnight on a Sunday. Desperate for food after bar hopping all the nearby places on the street that no longer served food. It was actually a random man on the street who said go inside and get the tater tots. We were greeted instantly and order taken immediately. Food came in about 5 mins which was amazing. After that the waiter disappeared, maybe thinking the job was done? The chicken blt was really good and the tater tots were too cheesy and spicy for me but my table tore through them. The wings were also massive and we were starving. The music ranges from heavy metal to oldies from Earth Wind and Fire. The rating would've likely been 4-5 if we didn't have to go to the bar to ask for them close out the bill

Shawn K.

Yelp
Located in The River North neighborhood of Chicago, Mother Hubbard's is a lively sports bar with plenty of TVs for sports fans and pool tables. Not too expensive. Decent bar food. 4 out of 5 stars.

Nick

Yelp
Wish there was a section for 0 stars. The food was terrible. When I walked in no one was eating and we were the only table with food. Makes sense now. You are better off going to a con session stand and getting ripped off there instead

Valerie B.

Yelp
Met my friends here last Saturday. Waitress spilled water all over my feet, no big deal. When I asked 30 minutes later for someone to clean it up I got the response "calm down, it's just water", meanwhile, my feet are soaked. All of our drinks were constantly empty, had to practically beg her to come over to our table. No wonder the service was rude, they add a 20% gratuity automatically
google avatar

Yelp
Went for late dinner and drinks. Pretty good and looked like everyone was having a great time.

Yelp
Great atmosphere! But overpriced food. Eat before and come here to have a drink with big parties.

Yelp
The absolute worst bar service I've had in this city. I use to frequent this bar years ago when ever I would come to Chi town and I don't know if I have bartender repellent on me these days but it should not be that hard to get a couple of beers at a BAR! I kept an empty glass pretty much the whole time I was there. Clyde was pretty cool, he's the only one that got me drinks so I pretty much had to wait until he was around for me to get one, it was pretty sad considering there were two other bartenders. The tall lady never even looked at me in the face the whole time I was there, I mean, it was literally as if I did not exist. That sucks. I'm here. I literally have to beg the bar tenders for service because they were busy laughing and getting their friends drinks. How are you going to ask the person to my left if they're all right, then past me up and ask the person to my right if they're good and I have an empty glass sitting in front right of me. Mother Hubbard needs to go back to the cupboard cause this old dog needs a drink. Bartenders, please check on everyone at the bar that's your job and that's how you get tips. Dive bar shouldn't mean bad service. You can have it. I'm done with them. Oh yeah... and my food was horrible.
google avatar

Andrew P.

Yelp
I mean I wouldn't go out of my way to come to this place quite honestly, but considering River North consists of so many higher end or pricier places, this could be a good alternative if you're looking for more of a laid back sports bar with no frills. I'd say the solid 3/5 that this place has makes sense. The place seems a little dirty and just needs some TLC. I'm pretty sure the table we were sat at was dirty and they had to wipe it down for us. The bathroom is gross, but it honestly makes sense. We ordered drinks and they were all good and came out cold and everything. I don't know, this place just didn't do it for me, lol. I'd pass this on for something else in the area, but to each their own!
google avatar

Adriana M.

Yelp
I'm not a local but whenever I'm in town I pop into this awesome bar. The bar tenders are always fun and cool to chat with.
google avatar

Brittany J.

Yelp
While this might appear to be your typical sports bar, I genuinely believe it's worth the trip. The location is unbeatable. The service is prompt and responsive. The prices, while in Chicago, are more than reasonable. The picture is about 1/2 an order of cheese curds with 2 dipping sauces and for 9 dollars. That's insane! There was stellar service and recommendations. The drinks were as expected and filling. The bathrooms at a sports pub leave little to be desired, as always. While this might not be the redeeming factor, it's one to overlook for the prices, service, and quality you will experience. I highly recommend!! Come and enjoy a great time!

Lauren P.

Yelp
Today it's 2 stars. Not the norm. The staff can make all the difference. Today I ordered a hamburger and got the sausage hamburger with cheese. When I said something to the bartender she got an attitude and wanted to take it back. I said nvm cuz I didn't want anything to happen to my food. Seriously usually would give 5 stars.
google avatar

Lexi M.

Yelp
This is a place we alway come to when we are in town. It's normally at the end of our day, so I haven't been able to post my review! The bartenders and legit bartenders and they had phenomenal bar food. It's the perfect place to end your night in Chicago! Great happy hour specials and TVs for the game. This is one of our regular spots and we love it!
google avatar

Cody S.

Yelp
One of my favorite bars in river north. Awesome service, great draft beer selection, food is bomb and just an overall friendly place. Plus pool tables and a juke box. This place goes all out for the holidays!

Aurora A.

Yelp
Go see Clyde if you come to Chicago. All around Chicago was a great experience, but the service we received from this place was extraordinary. Great place to watch the games. My husband and I came back the second night because of the vibes and service. Clyde was so friendly and made us feel right at home. He really made us feel special while we were visiting. Highly recommend this place
google avatar

Greg M.

Yelp
As a bar, it gets a 3. For the tunes and service, they get a 5! Came in here before the show at Andy's Jazz Club and almost didn't leave. They had a blues mix on that was OUTSTANDING! Yes, this is a sportsbar, with lots of TVs, playing blues music. Bartenders were great and beers were tasty. If Andy's sucks, I'm coming back.

Chris M.

Yelp
First, the people at Mother Hubbard's are good servers and kind people That said, our server greeted us with "we are out of burgers" What? That is like a pizza place saying "we are out of pepperoni" Then, when I chose to order the tacos, our server said "we don't have those" I ended up with the buffalo pulled chicken, which was pretty good My visit was during March and their chalkboard with "specials" had a list of Christmas beers Could be a cool place, especially with all the tv's and a long beer list, but something is holding it back

Ken T.

Yelp
My wife and two children enjoyed our visit and really had no complaints until I looked at the receipt later in the day. There was a service charge for 20% included (about $19)?? We assumed this was some Chicago billing piece in common across restaurants...although seemed quite high. I had also tipped 25% not realizing there was a service charge already included. Device was handed to me and was at the tip screen so signed and did touch the send me receipt option. The next day we went next door to Theory and incurred no such charge. The waitress was surprised when told her of the 20% next door. She said that was a tip charge and surely went to the waitress. Why did a group of 4 automatically get charged 20%? No idea, yet clearly quite annoying. Yes, I should call and seek an explanation. Theory was fantastic btw!
google avatar

Priya K.

Yelp
Might be the best chicken tenders I've ever had. Perfectly cooked and absolutely delicious. The fries were also well done and very tasty. They were unsalted though so ask for salt and pepper. Beer was cold and off that tap so no complaints there. Overall a simple but great place. Def recommended.
google avatar

Gina W.

Yelp
This is a true neighborhood bar with friendly bartenders, great "dirty tots" and a nice selection of bourbons! We've celebrated all kinds of occasions here the past 3 years and it's always a night to remember! Anna B., Michelle, Chris, Clyde, Andrew, Jackie, Jenise, Big A, Carmine, Tommy, Rob & Ronny always call me by name and look out for me. I love coming here! (But I miss Franki....)
google avatar

Liz G.

Yelp
Was recommended this place from the bartender at Ramen San down the street. DID NOT DISAPPOINT! Came in from out of town and this place was amazing! Clyde and Sonia were the best! I felt so welcomed here and safe cuz I was I my myself. The people and tv vibes were so good. I can't wait to come back here for my next trip. Chicago did not disappoint! See you soon!
google avatar

Scott G.

Yelp
We came up from California for business. This place has a good vibe. The bartenders were awesome. They catered to us all night. (Chips and salsa were kinda wack, not gonna lie.) But wither way im giving this place 5 stars. For the service, the culture, and everything else. Oh yea, and to the big guy who walks around shaking everyones hand and making people laugh, we need people like you in every establishment.. Its people like you that beings people out of that negative energy and enjoys their time. We appreciated you man. Chi Town was dope and next time well be coming back. Thank you.
google avatar

Lori M.

Yelp
The Dirty Tots and Nachos are delicious and the service was fast and friendly. Highly recommend if you're looking for a great local dive type bar.
google avatar

Christy M.

Yelp
It's a dive bar. No other way to phrase it. However, it has a good location and the service was fast. We sat on the small patio to enjoy the nice weather. The music on the patio was too loud for my taste and I wish they did not allow smoking on the patio. Inside they had pool tables and a lot of TVs. Restrooms were kinda gross (one toilet was leaking) but at least they were available. As long as you know what you're getting into here I think it's a safe bet. Didn't sample the food.
google avatar

Jarred S.

Yelp
Great bar food. I went in on a business trip to find a bar that would place my hometown sports. They changed a tv to the game I wanted without complaint. Friendly staff. Mac n cheese bites were great.
google avatar

John W.

Yelp
We came here while on vacation to catch a Bear's game between activities. We ordered a pitcher of beer and were generally enjoying the atmosphere. We were about to order some food and I decided to use bathroom first. I noticed one of the male servers (big, muscular guy, Mich ballcap) after relieving himself in the stall, exited without washing hands. I exited just behind him and noticed he went directly into helping patrons. This guy was bringing orders from the kitchen to the tables. Needless to say, we didn't order food. It's wasn't a one-time event either. Next time I was in was in the restroom, again he didn't wash hands.
google avatar

Mary B.

Yelp
Nice sports bar to enjoy the game and friends. Good location, would definitely return.

Anonymous A.

Yelp
Mean server lady with brown(ish) hair and glasses pushed my friend out of the way and didn't even apologize. All the servers have major attitude!!! Fun place to drink but don't expect good service. :(
google avatar

Lisa A.

Yelp
This is our second visit and it was just as great as the first time. It is an awesome game day spot! It gets PACKED quickly so if you plan to go watch your favorite team play, arrive EARLY! The staff is AWESOME and they're very attentive even though they're very, very busy. They have a fully stocked bar with lots of variety/options. We didn't eat so I have no comments about their food menu. We will always make a point to stop in when we're in Chicago!
google avatar

Angie M.

Yelp
Our server was great while we enjoyed the fun inside. She was lovely. Problem was bouncers (and nasty other individuals who seemed to be affiliated with each other) being absolutely rude and crass (and seemed underage, at least in maturity level) in and in front of the establishment and yelling at us while trying to catch an Uber. Extremely rude, inappropriate for the situation, and embarrassing. Won't go back or I'll catch a charge. Hoes abound. I would highly caution any female over the age of 22 from coming here, unless they enjoy being called fat or ugly (by ugly chicks, nonetheless). If you like this kind of treatment then this is your place!
google avatar

Ken P.

Yelp
OK place. Pretty divey. Friendly vibe. Couple of FF drafts going on on the back. Not as horrifyingly expensive as Chicago can get, but not cheap. 7 of us ran up a $500 tab in about 3 hours. Nice bartender, went out of her way to hunt down an N/A beer for one of us. Wings looked good.
google avatar

Allison T.

Yelp
I can't believe I haven't been here before! I came out with a couple guy friends who wanted to watch the game and shoot a little pool. Now, normally, this isn't my type of vibe, but the drinks are really strong and the bartenders are so funny! The best part for me was the mix of different groups of people. Old, young, wealthy, on a budget. Everyone is here to have a good time and their all so friendly. It would have been only a 3 or 4 star rating from me, but then I had the cualiflower pizza. It was some of the best I ever tasted and I was shocked it came from such a little dive place like this. Definitely recommend and make sure your friends help you eat it!

Maurine D.

Yelp
Food was delicious! Best grilled cheese and Chicago dog. Couldn't have asked for a better server, Taylor was attentive and engaged. Mother Hubbard's was the perfect venue to watch our Colorado Buffs win. Hands down, best day ever! SKO Buffs Six Tony thumbs up

Amanda B.

Yelp
Very cute late night place! While they don't have hummus on the menu, they have a variety of fried fare. My friends were famished by the time we found this place! Not only did they play our favorite music the entire time we dined, but our server was so nice and efficient. The wings were tasty and the curds cheesy.
