Best Restaurants in Napa Valley | Eater SF

"It’s hard to overlook the unfussy, simple fun and joy that is Charles Whittaker and Benedict “Ben” Koenig’s Mothers Tacos. Housed in a former Pizza Hut on Jefferson Street, big crowds swarm for the Mexico City-style taqueria, the comal out front, the pineapple-stacked trompo. Order the cabeza taco to get a taste of the juicy, chewy goodness that is Mothers." - Flora Tsapovsky

Google
The food was fantastic. Totally recommend the al pastor taco. It reminded me so much of the ones I had in Puerto Vallarta. The chips were so tasty. Loved the other tacos we got as well. Chorizo and the Pica Rico were so good. If you like a little spice get pica rico. Horchata was also good

Google
We had an amazing dinner at Mother’s Tacos in Napa! The food was incredibly fresh and flavorful — the corn tortillas were unbelievably soft, and the pescado taco was the clear champion of the night. The salsas were vibrant and packed a punch, and the whole vibe was relaxed and fun. Loved the outdoor seating and great ambience. Highly recommend!

Google
Loved the Al pastor and fish tacos. The steak and the mushroom tacos werent that good. Their mother's Mexican lager from East brothers brewing was wonderful!! Cilantro was a bit much. One of my go to spots for Al pastor and fish tacos.

Google
AMAZING. Was recommended this place by a friend and it did not disappoint. Really cool build out, honestly similar to In n Out but cooler. Highly recommend the Frozen Paloma if you’re going to drink. Menu rotates but I got a few different tacos and they were all incredible, recommend getting the fried quesadilla version. The cheese taco shell version was a little too much for me. They give you a tray of their house salsas and they are all incredible. One of them has a rare chile I forget the name but it was really good. Tortillas are handmade in house, so fresh and light. Fish taco was really good the fish was fried really lightly but still super crispy. Will definitely be back next time I am in Napa.

A friend had been wanting us to go for many years now. Tried it, finally. I wish I had sooner. My Danish cousins would have loved it. The food is fresh, homemade tortillas. The fresh made horchata (rice, cinnamon drink) was a stand out. The food is filling. Some of the dishes could use a little more seasoning, as weren’t as flavorful as they appeared. We enjoyed it and will be back.

Google
Whoa, I'm so glad I finally decided to try this place! I ordered the lengua taco that's only available on the weekends, and it was delicious and tender. I also tried a cheese shell taco with chicken. What a great way to make it keto! My husband had carnitas and carne asada. He loved his as well. I will be back for sure.

Google
I really enjoyed this food! It was strange not having an obvious menu (paper menus are by the entrance) and not having anyone at the counter for several minutes, so I was starting to regret choosing to come here. However, once I started eating the food, all was forgiven. Everything was extremely flavorful, though the pica rica was quite a bit spicier than I expected! While the tacos were excellent, I’d probably stick with the mulitas next time since they were phenomenal. I would come back here if I visited Napa again!

Google
This is a hidden gem. We were on our way back from Napa, had a craving for fish tacos and found this place. It did not disappoint. The fish was fried to perfection, tacos were home made and the homemade salad were amazing. If I had the appetite I'd have eaten more! Staff are friendly and the place is basic but the food is what you're here for. Nothing else.

Yelp
The first time I ever came here I ordered the Al Pastor Queso Taco & the regular Al Pastor Tacos & they were SO good! We decided to try this place out again last weekend & we got the Carne Asada Mulita, Some Tacos De Lengua (Not pictured) & Al Pastor Mulitas (not pictured) .. when I tell you the food has so much flavor, I'm seriously not even kidding. The horchata is also a must! Mothers Tacos is great, the food here is delicious & the workers are super friendly as well!

Yelp
Beautiful food! Not something I'd typically say about a taco joint but it was vibrant and so well presented. When you eat here you get your own salsa 'bar' platter for your table. Outdoor patio is super cute with covered and open tables. Food came quickly but I was the only one here. Apparently they recently added salads and soups (pozole and vegetarian Azteca). I got the carne asada taco (a bit dry) and the purple potato taco (loved it) plus rice and smoky beans. Since this is a Mexico City styled taqueria that probably accounts for the upgraded vibe and smoky beans. Delicious house made tortillas and the cocktails look great-too early for me today! Frozen and hand shaken margaritas, beer and a Oaxaca old fashioned are on the menu along with horchatas with tequila or mezcal. I hope the guacamole is fantastic since it's $15 and the dirty fries, which look like their version of nachos seemed pricey at first but I guess not given all that's on them.

Yelp
*Unacceptable Hygiene Practiced I stopped by this restaurant at 11:45 AM, eager to try their food. Unfortunately, my enthusiasm quickly turned to concern. Despite the lunch rush, I was shocked to see staff neglecting basic hygiene practices. No one was washing their hands or wearing gloves while preparing food or handling the cash register. To make matters worse, a staff member didn't wash their hands after ringing me up. A customer even got up from their table and started making their own food without washing their hands. Needless to say, I promptly requested a refund and shared my concerns with the staff. Until they address these serious hygiene issues, I wouldn't recommend eating here. *Suggestions for Improvement* 1. Enforce handwashing policies for staff. 2. Provide hand sanitizer stations. 3. Ensure customers washing hands before handling food. By implementing these simple yet crucial measures, this restaurant can regain customer trust and provide a safer dining experience.

Yelp
Wow! What a hidden gem in Napa. If you're hankering for Mexico City style tacos (Tacqueria Orinoco), come here! I had very low expectations but I was blown away by their pastor tacos. Super flavorful and moist. Their tripas tacos also were delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
Believe the hype. The fish taco was great. I'm going to eat here every week. The patio is cute

Yelp
I'm not gonna lie to yall, this place is pretty expensive for tacos. It's not extreme but it is pricier however, it's pretty worth the price. Absolutely loved the quality and flavors of everything here. And at least in comparison to a lot of other places in the area, price was similar. I tried almost every meat on the menu when I came in, enjoyed all of them heavily especially their pastor and suadero. The tortillas were also very tasty I think they may be made in house. Service was very quick and polite, they made sure we had what we wanted/asked for in a timely manner.
google avatar

Yelp
Mother's tacos is a small shop located in a strip mall a few miles outside of downtown Napa. If you like tacos it's worth the drive out to this spot. There really isn't much space for dining in and it's better for a quick bite or to take away. The al pastor tacos are great and so are their salsas. Tacos are between 4-6 dollars.
google avatar

Yelp
If you're in Napa you have to try Mother's Tacos. Its literally a hole in the wall with very little indoor seating but a small amount of outdoor seating. The carne asada tacos was such a huge surprise because it had a unique flavoring thats definitely different from your normal carne asada. Highly recommend. As for everything else, we got the al pastor, chorizo and a variation of the carne asada. Out of everything I still would recommend the OG carne asada and the chorizo above everything else. Next time we would just double up on that if we are in the neighborhood. Last but not least we grabbed some chicharon bites as well. This was good if we hadn't already ordered so much food. Would recommend getting this if you're planning to only get two tacos. Overall, a very solid Mexican option in Napa!

Yelp
What a fabulous place for just tacos! I am surprised to find such an authentic taco only restaurant in Napa region. The price is reasonable, the food is delicious. Their sauce is amazing! The outside patio sitting area is very cute. I would definitely go back ! :-)

Yelp
Puts every single place I've been to in Napa to shame !! Just moved back here after a 15 year hiatus from LA, I am simply blown away !!!

Yelp
Food was so good, I forgot to take pics of everything LOL I came here to satisfy my craving for a mulita and Mothers Tacos satisfied it! The suadero was so tender which went nicely with the crispy corn tortilla and cheese. I also got to try bites of the pastor, chicharron, and campechano tacos, which were all flavorful! The fresh handmade tortillas were a great addition to everything as well! We also ordered a horchata which I thought was just okay. Additionally, I like how they have a self serve salsa and condiments bar (eg pickled veggies) for to-go or just extra salsa! They also have the same selection of salsas as a set that are served with the table. Inside, Mothers Tacos only has stools and counters to sit at and has most of the seating outdoors. However, both indoors and outdoors have a great ambiance! I really enjoyed my time here, and hope to come again!
google avatar

Yelp
Wowzas the food here was super authentic Mexican food! Every single thing I had was absolutely incredible. The staff was friendly and very organized! The theme in the restaurant was really cute giving it great vibes and ambiance! Highly recommend stopping by here if you are in napa! Tacos had: carne asada, lengua, tripas, Al pastor, suadero!! ( loved every single one!!) Side note: all the salsas were incredible try them all if possible!
google avatar

Yelp
Great tacos in Napa! Made a pit stop in Napa and decided to try out Mothers Tacos. I'm soooo glad we did! The outdoor setting was very cute, a nice patio with lighting and a small grassy area with outdoorsy games. Service was very friendly and fast. Also love the salsa bar! Al pastor tacos were hefty and soooo juicy!! Appreciate all the extra topping and fixings. Will definitely be back for more!!
google avatar

Yelp
Found this place very last minute and man were we impressed. First off, I love how they put all of the salsas in little dishes on the table. They have indoor and outdoor seating along with some cornhole if you feel like playing. Now the food, it was absolutely delicious. The chicharron bites were fantastic and our tacos were super tasty. The service was impeccable. They were very friendly!
google avatar

Joseph M.

Yelp
Was in the area and I was craving tacos so here I am. I ordered 1x cabeza, 1x lengua, 1x tripa, and 1x chicharron taco. I also ordered horchata. All of the tacos needless to say were very delicious. The cabeza, lengua, and tripa are my favs but note these are only available on the weekend. What I also really like about this place is that they have their own sauce bar with pickled vegetables. Regarding the service, the food here comes out pretty quickly and the staff is very friendly. This restaurant has mostly outdoor seating and small indoor seating. There also a lot of available parking in this area. By far my favorite taco spot in the Bay Area. If you're into authentic Mexican food, I definitely recommend checking this spot out! Try it out if you like. :)
google avatar

Nicole J.

Yelp
Food is delish! The carne asada is tender and not chewy. The chicharrones are sooo good. We always have to get a side order as an app. The salsa bar has great options...and the spicy nutty snack they keep on top of the salsa bar is . Always so yummy. Go check them out.
google avatar

Yelp
Tacos were delicious. Good customer service. Cook little spot. I would recommend and go back.

Yelp
Soooo good! Would definitely come back!! The fries were good, the tacos were good, the sauce! All good. They have seating mostly outside.
google avatar

Yelp
We love all things taco in my house so naturally when Mother's tacos opened we had to try it out! They have been consistent in their quality and service since they opened. Honestly, we are all hooked on their carne asada tacos so that is mostly what we get. Their food is so fresh and their tortillas are homemade and delicious! We also get their fries sometimes (huge serving so we share). If you're extra hungry try a side of their chicharron they are sooo good! Their salsas are also amazing! They have something for everyone at their salsa bar. Even though they are almost always busy everyone there is so kind and helpful and will take time to answer questions. The ordering area/indoor seating area is very small but their outside seating area is really large! It does make it a little difficult to eat there when the weather is bad but during nice weather it's really nice to sit outside and eat! If you're looking for some really good authentic and fresh Mexican food, this is a great option!
google avatar

Sonja P.

Yelp
I like the nice outdoor seating. Cute and kid friendly. Staff is nice, and tacos came out in a timely manner. Tacos were good. Not out of this world amazing good, but I would come back when I'm in the area. They were a little bland, and don't seem to have that extra bold taste. I got chicharon, al pastor, and suadero.
google avatar

Michelle S.

Yelp
AMAZING! We are from San Diego and have had a hard time finding authentic Mexican food. Try this place! It beats any Mexican place in the area! The owner& staff are amazing-food is everything you can imagine. If you are reading this - you know you are looking for good Mexican food - so just go! This is the place.
google avatar

Ariana M.

Yelp
Can we just take a minute to talk about their Spanish rice. I never eat Spanish rice at restaurants because it's always so bland. Not this Spanish rice!! It reminds me of the homemade Spanish rice my grandma makes. Soooooo good!! Tacos are on homemade tortillas. Another A+. My kids and I LOVE the tacos.
google avatar

Darlene M.

Yelp
LOVE this place! Great food, and great outdoor dining space. Chicharron, Al Pastor, Fish, and Carne Asada tacos are delicious. I'm sure the others are good too, I just haven't tried them all yet. I love their elote corn and have always looked forward to ordering it. However, it appears that they no longer offer it. (sad face) Service has been good. Wait time is not long at all. This place is a 25 minute drive from home but is 100% worth it.
google avatar

Ralph V.

Yelp
First and foremost their customer service was outstanding. All employees had a smile on their face. From the cashier to the cooks in the back, they were all having fun. Shout out to the whole line for their positive energy. I would love to work with them. Unfortunately I was in a rush and just had to take it to go. So the only items I got were the carne asada tacos. Bought five of them with everything on it with salsa verde on them as well, so fire! Oh and can't forget to squeeze those limes baby! You can definitely taste the grill flavor on the meat. And to top it off, they added a grilled green onion as a topping. It was grilled as well and tasted marvelous. If I ever back in Napa, I know where to go! tan jodidamente bueno
google avatar

Melanie K.

Yelp
WOWWWWWWWW so delicious. Hidden gem in Napa. Tacos are out of this world, especially the cabeza and pescado. Love that they use corn tortillas instead of flour. Going to make this my regular spot whenever I visit Napa. Service is quick and efficient. 10/10
google avatar

Yvonne F.

Yelp
A hidden gem in Napa that I was lucky to discover! The tacos are on the pricier side, but they're absolutely worth it. They make their own corn tortillas, which were soft yet sturdy enough to hold the tacos together. We tried the Pescado, Carnita, and Pastor. The Pastor was flavorful and juicy, while the Carnita was tender with a smoky, charred flavor. The Pescado was lightly battered and topped with slaw and aioli, which was creamy with a hint of spice. My favorite touch was the whole charred spring onion on top--it added a sweet flavor that perfectly cut through the richness. The shop itself has a charming diner vibe, with white tiles and an old Coke machine that I believe still works. There are a few stools inside, but plenty of outdoor seating is available. Our server was friendly and took our order quickly.
google avatar

Yelp
Easy ten min drive from Napa downtown, worth every minute! Really delicious, authentic and won't break the bank. Nomz: Had a chilorio taco and a queso taco de campechano ( was the special meat of the weekend). Chiloria taco was super flavorful and the queso taco was really tasty and a pretty good size. I was full with these two and didn't need another. They come with a grilled onion on the side (delicious with a little salt and limon) and there are a ton of salsas to dress your food with, I went for the chile árbol and it was really good. Freshly made tortillas! Service: Counter service and nice ladies. Ambiance: Super cool branding and authentic vibes, they have the patio area outside with the Coca Cola tables. Nope or Dope: Dope, you can not skip this place, was super yummy and fast!
google avatar

Yelp
Had to try this spot out since my cousin raved about it. It's a cute little restaurant in a plaza near Napa High. All their seating is located outside and you order and pay inside then wait for your order to be called. Perfect for a sunny day and they have umbrellas for shade. There's also a couple corn hole games you can play while waiting. I liked that they had a salsa bar (which had signs which were mild and spicy) and even pickled veggies. We wanted to try them all so we purchased tortilla chips for the table ($5.95). Also ordered waffle fries which were bomb! Next time will get the smothered waffle fries. We order carne asada, pescado (fish), al pastor and chicharron tacos. The highlight for me was definitely the chicharron tacos. I didn't think the carne asada had any flavor at all which was disappointing. They have lots of toppings as well so maybe the meat gets lost in it? Idk but I think in a taco everything should compliment each other. Prices are a bit higher than taquerias but they're a bit of speciality tacos. If I were in town, I would come back for the chicharron tacos and waffle fries.

Yelp
Since I live close enough to the Mission, I probably wouldn't think about going to Napa for tacos. However, Jamie W.'s coworker had suggested trying this spot when he mentioned we were heading up here on a Saturday. We parked in Downtown Napa because we stopped at Wilfred's Tiki Lounge first (review: https://yelp.to/Q_vsLW4QoG). It didn't dawn on us that it would take forty minutes to walk here. Well, we had to earn our tacos, right? It looked pretty popular, and we were told they were prepared in the savory Mexico City-style. I'm not sure what that means, but they definitely used fresh corn tortillas. The choices were plentiful, veggie and fish included, but we ended up sticking with what we knew. We ordered two of the $4.45 Pastor made with shaved pork trompo right off the spinning spit. It was tender and topped with onion, cilantro and a chunk of pineapple. We also got two steak tacos, the $4.45 Suadero and the $4.45 Carne Asada. The former had the consistency of a slow cooked pulled pork, while the latter came marinated and right off the grill (photo: https://yelp.to/mB2HHq8EEy). They were delicious and gone quite quickly even with the addition of jalapeños and fresh salsa (photo: https://yelp.to/46c8tfo2D7). Worth waiting in line for. FOOD - 4 stars...savory good tacos with unique meats and seasonings AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...pretty crowded but organized SERVICE - 4 stars...pretty quick TOTAL - 4 stars...if you're in Napa... Yelp
I came here recently for the first time and I can't wait to go back. I seen this location on instagram and wanted to pop in for a visit. You order at the counter and they will call your name once your order is ready. They only have outside seating but there is a covered area. Everything tasted great and I wished I had gotten an extra taco they even have corn hole, if you want to play a game after you eat. Definitely will be going back again!
google avatar

Michelle C.

Yelp
This place was delicious. We ordered a little of everything and we were so happy. A little sad they didn't have lengua. (Yes, we went in a Sunday) the tortillas are handmade. The waffle fries were a hit at our table. We ordered two orders for a party of 5. We all had 3 tacos each. ( we were really hungry.) the micheladas were simple, but hit the spot. Tripa, cabeza, al pastor, steak, - all of them were yummy, but the cabeza was a hit! When in Napa we will stop by if craving mexican food.
google avatar

Tracey A.

Yelp
Here's what was said as we consumed 4 different taco varieties, multiple fresh salsas, chips, pickled vegetables, and elote: "Mmmm...", "Oh God, this is delicious!", "What's that guy eating? It looks so good!", "It's kind of sad, but now we're never going to go back to (insert name of another place we really like in Napa)". Here's what was said at a concert later that night and on the drive home that followed: "How soon do you think we can go back to Mothers Tacos?", "I keep thinking about those delicious salsas", "Why can't Marin have Mothers Tacos?", and "We're going to be inventing a lot of excuses to head to Napa". And here's what was said tonight, 5 days after visiting Mothers: "I'd really like Mothers Tacos tonight". This was my second time at Mothers Tacos and it was just as delicious as my first time. The serve-yourself salsa bar was clean and attractively presented, the menu was creative and interesting (ditto the al fresco seating; all the seating is outside), and the food is the bomb (read: absolutely delicious). Tourists will dine downtown but those in the know will venture off the beaten path. You could just tell that those who were eating here felt about the food exactly as I did: thrilled to settle in and consume.

Yelp
If you ever find yourself craving tacos anywhere near Napa, this is the spot. Plenty of outdoor shaded seating with water stations. My go to is the suadero which 8s the slow cooked beef. Melt in your mouth goodness. They make they own fresh tortillas, great salsas. Look out for their specials. The lengua, cabeza and tripa are all super good and super tender. It's all counter service but staff are quick and nice. Plenty of parking and overall a nice spot t9 grab lunch.
google avatar

Imelda R.

Yelp
Pretty consistent service and food. Tacos (suadero, pastor, cabeza & fish) Elote ( with all the spices & crema)
google avatar

Nadine D.

Yelp
I've been here a couple of times & always have gotten the most delicious meals here. The ambience is casual, they have a few indoor seating but most of their seatings is outdoors. The service is quick The salsa bar is pretty good & has lots of options. I had their carne asada & chicharron dirty fries & they are delicious & super flavorful. The waffle fries is super crispy & the sauce enrich the protein of your choice & the fries perfectly. Theirs tacos are good I had their carne asada & Pescado both were really good. They cook their protein perfectly making the proteins melt in your mouth & leaving you wanting more.
google avatar

Kenny O.

Yelp
Recommended by a friend and it did not disappoint. Got four different types, carne, suadero, pastor, and one other I forgot, but they were all amazing. The salsas are tasty and I really liked the seating available outside! I'll definitely be back! Service was quick and efficient!
google avatar

Mariza R.

Yelp
Instead of wine tasting in the area, we try all the fish tacos. This place is the winner each time. The texture and flavor of tortilla, the portions of fish and the flight of salsas. Chef's kiss. Amazing.
google avatar

Susanna D.

Yelp
I dream about going back to Mothers tacos. Nothing but excellence. The tacos were delicious. The carne asada fries were mouth watering. The frozen mango margs were perfect in Napa's hot summer days. Staff was friendly and food came out quickly. Went with my brother in law who is a carne asada fries aficionado and he was obsessed with the carne asada fries.
google avatar

Vanessa O.

Yelp
Loved the tacos here. The service was great. Food didn't take long at all. There is a seating area outside and the weather was perfect. I ordered a few carne asada tacos and they were perfect; juicy, flavorful, well seasoned. We definitely enjoyed the quick bite here.
google avatar

Maria G.

Yelp
First time trying their elote it was soo good with a spicy quick to it. Ordered 2 pastor tacos came with pineapple and I dressed them in guac sauce and tomatillo/morita. I also got 2 chilorio tacos, the meat was so juicy and had a bit of a sweet taste to it, dressed it in arbol sauce. They are really good!! Service was good, cashier can definately need a smile and sprinkle a bit more welcoming attitude in my opinion she seemed a bit short on customer service. The ambiance was calm outside. I wish they can incorporate other things in their menu like quesadillas, nopales asados or something alike. Burritos!! Yum Lol
google avatar

Manraj D.

Yelp
Very good soft and yummy chicken tacos. The carne asada taco was really good also l. The chips n salsa had a variety of salsas some were pretty spicy the green one with red onion especially. Had to eat outdoor it is very tiny hole in the wall but overall food was good solid 4/5.
google avatar

Rachel R.

Yelp
Wow, mind blowing fish tacos, so good! This a a great place, that is clean, well run, and so cute! They have some inside seating, as well as outside tables, including corn-hole. The service was speedy, and kind. We also ordered the waffle fries, they were perfectly crisp, and addictive! Highly recommend!

Yelp
I would give it 10 stars if I could. We live right around the corner and we are just discovering Mothers Tacos. The tacos themselves are SOOOOO fresh. The quality of the meat is outstanding. The salsa is delicious. It is some of the best, if not THE best, tacos I've had. My partner discovered this restaurant when he got an email from Yelp saying "it's taco Tuesday" and he did some mad research. Thank God he did. We are going back Saturday!

Eddy A.

Yelp
Great tacos! Had the pastor and the suadero. Both were great, salsa were quite good. My Jamaica was a bit sweet, but still enjoyable. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Justine W.

Yelp
Super yummy food. Super cute spot, great service. Food came out quick. The pastor is fantastic. Rice and beans are great. Highly recommend this authentic and cute spot. Will be back.

Yelp
The vegetarian taco selection is excellent! My favorite was the mushroom. These tacos are packed with flavors and hefty with filling. You order, find a seat (indoor or outside), and wait for your number to be called. It's a simple spot to get some wonderful food. The salsa and pickles are also delicious. I'll be back for more!
