Enjoyed the vibe of this little neighborhood eatery and the service was really lovely. Our waiter was incredibly helpful when picking our food and ordering drinks. We tried the spiced fries (👏🏽), mozzarella sandwich (👍🏽), burger (🥱) and the banoffee trifle (👎🏿). We’d probably come back here for the vibes and service but will try ordering some different things! One small touch I loved is that they serve you a small bonus bite - ours was an onion jam and focaccia bite which was a great touch.

This place was good, made a reservation and they were quick to accommodate us even though the table was not ready when we arrived. The service was excellent, staff attentive and on top of subtly bringing drink and dessert menu without pressuring. The curry chicken was delicious, huge amount of food. And the drinks were lovely, with unique options.

Great happy hour oysters for $1.75 each! We stopped in after seeing the curbside sign and ended up getting a dozen plus for an early dinner. The oysters were fresh, clean, and very well shucked. Other food that we got was also quite tasty and we enjoyed our drinks. Service was great overall--small oddities like not being given forks or condiments for the oysters when we ordered a second round (we eventually went up to a bartender to ask for them), but overall it was good. We'd happily come back. The atmosphere was great too, hitting a middle ground between old school diner and leather booth speakeasy.

Quaint and charming spot. Our bartender TJ was exceptional! I'm glad we decided to sit at the bar. We enjoyed everything in the photo below!

Google
Motorkat , A Must-Visit in Takoma Park. Motorkat is one of the top spots in Takoma Park, a big upgrade from The Republic. With fresh oysters, creative cocktails, standout dishes, and cozy outdoor seating, it’s the perfect place to soak in the best of the neighborhood.

Google
Motorkat opened several month ago in Tacoma Park at the former Republic location. The interior is much the same. The menu has something for everyone. The palate cleanser was a piece of yellow tomato with a little da loupe of season cream. Underwhelming. They have a good cocktail list with interesting names. Service was friendly and attentive.

Google
Motorkat serves fresh food and good food. We had the seafood stew and the pasta special with a short rib. They were both good but salty and we also had oysters and the Canadian oysters were pretty fresh and tasty - the beer, Oktoberfest lager was very good and the service very good, overall prices are like downtown DC, there is no $30 meal per person as the listing says you need 50 bucks to eat in that place so nice neighborhood but downtown prices cocktails for $15 and most entrees worthy of a culinary trip for $29 or so.

This is the hidden gem brunch in the DC area. Innovative menu, great service, and lovely, warm atmosphere. We arrived on Sunday morning at 10:15 and did not need a reservation, which was a big plus. The restaurant is clean & newly refurbished - upgrade from the old Republic where we used to go. Food: Potato Rosti with Salmon - Absolutely Fantastic! This is just a gorgeous savory dish - with micro greens, cream with chives, yum. French Toast was crunchy and innovative, and this was delicious as well. The mimosas were generous pours - best I’ve seen in the area. The best bonus for me is that there’s a kids menu - many places don’t have that. Will be back - the whiskey selection at the bar looked amazing.

Yelp
summary: located on the business strip of Takoma Park, Motorkat impresses with a cool ambiance, great service, and lots of yummy food options. My family and I stopped by for a quick drink and were seated at the bar area. The service was impeccable and the bartender was incredibly friendly. Even in the limited time we were there I could tell that the level of service here was above and beyond. The drink menu was also very expansive and watching the bartender, it was evident he knew what he was doing back there. The food options looked great and they have a variety of menu items for different times of the day. We didn't have bites to eat, but we were definitely tempted to. They have a lot of seating options from standard indoor dining, bar seating, and a cute outdoor patio. Overall it's a very cute spot and we'll definitely be back to try out more of the menu.

Yelp
Went for brunch and won't make that mistake again. Got the biscuits and gravy. Should have been titled "biscuit and gravy" because it was a single biscuit. The biscuit itself had a thick, tough crust that took some sawing with the knife to get through. The eggs were poached hard, which was hopefully not intentional. The whole thing came out at room temperature. The gravy was bland. Pic attached. I'm sorry if it makes you feel as sad as I felt when I got it. My partner got the Potato Rosti. It was a small disc of hash browns with stuff on it, which would be great if it were executed well. It came out room temperature and soggy. Giving two stars because the desserts were good. decent cannolis and a nice trifle. Both were a good portion size (unlike the brunch entrees), tasted great (unlike the brunch entrees), and a reasonable price (unlike the brunch entrees).

Yelp
I finally went and ordered something other than the steak lol! I ordered this fish dish with some beans, I forgot what it's called, but it was soooo good! I hope they keep it on the menu so I can order it again. My friend got this pasta that she liked and looked really good. We also shared this banana dessert that I surprisingly liked. Always a great meal at MotorKat!

Yelp
Fun atmosphere. Big long bar. Strong drinks! What more can you ask for? Service was good! Bartender gave bday shots for my friend!! Pretty cool!

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this place since it's close to where I am staying. We didn't realize we had made it for happy hour which had just what I wanted... fries and oysters and a good cocktail (more like 3). The fries have an Asian flavor with a creamy sauce and sesame seeds which I ate but definitely shareable depending on how hungry you are. The oysters were so good I started with six since have proved but order another six. Loved the receipt stayed on so I could see which oysters were which. The cocktails we got were the martinis but they had a variety of flavors, from lemon ginger (tasted like a healthy tonic) to pomegranate to my fave prickle pear. Overall have gone back twice and another standout is the wait staff. Super friendly everyone was working together always had our drinks filled! Def a great neighborhood spot and even a date spot. Sure lots of family but for the happy hour definitely hit it up.

Yelp
Fun place with a great location. The food is really good and an interesting variety, from strong standards to some really creative options. The drinks are great, with well mixed cocktails, a nice wine list and several beers on tap. Very solid fundamentals and relatively affordable so could be a semi-regular place. I had the pork belly and grits, and a Caesar salad. The grits were creamy and well offset with the grilled pork belly. Topped with crispy shallots it was delicious and rich in flavor and texture. It's not a large plate, but filling. Any bigger and it would be too much of a good thing in my opinion. While inviting the vibe is hard to get a handle on. It seems to be shooting for the neighborhood hangout, but at the same time is a little too nice for that. So there will be some boisterous bar flies arguing over something but at then cranking out nice food in a more upscale dining environment. It either can't quite decide what it is, or has purposely decided to straddle a bit of an awkward divide. The staff is nice, they're pleasant and a bit informal adding to the general welcoming vibe.

Yelp
Such a step up for the neighborhood! As a former long-time resident of Takoma Park, it's been a treat to see how the town has evolved (and improved!) over the years. Who'd have thought a fun oyster bar would eventually take the place of an indie video store? When we were there on the cold first Friday night of 2025, service was good if a tad overwhelmed. John, our waiter, was friendly and knowledgeable. Our oysters were cleanly shucked and nicely presented, and my brussels sprouts Caesar salad was different and delicious. I look forward to going back and trying the Happy Hour. Motorkat merits everyone's support. Viva TK PK!

Yelp
The service here was great and so was the atmosphere. The food was okay in my opinion. It is definitely on the pricier side and not enough portion size. The mussels and clams were good, nothing special. The pork belly itself was cooked great but I wasn't a fan of the sauce and overall as a dish. Although I thought the cornbread was very dry, the combination of the flavors were phenomenal! Definitely want to be back to try other items on the menu. Parking was hard to find and had to park on the street in a neighborhood.

Yelp
Quick Review - Oyster bar is fresh and delicious. They serve local DMV Oysters and so non-resident types. -The bar has its own menu, but serves the main restaurant menu as well. I love the mussels and clams- has a saffron wine sauce that's toothsome and not too acidic -Try a mock-tail! They have a few variants.

Yelp
This was a happy hour visit and the bar was buzzing. I tried a few items and was satisfied for the most part. The bar area was a fair size with a few high top tables and ample bar There is open air, outdoor seating. The music was a nice mix of upbeat and smooth songs. My dirty martini was fine. The smoked wings were ok. The zatar and honey flavoring on the chicken was good but the herb ranch tasted more like a watery tahini dressing. The braised pork cubano (half) was decent, the dijionaise helped the sandwich and the bread was toasted well, yet soft inside. The French fries a go-go are fries and gravy similar to findings in Canada so there any complaints from me with their veggie gravy. The motordog was like a corndog but crispier and even with all of the toppings that would bring flavor (curried ketchup and red chilies) the dog was bland. There could be some seasoning added to the breading and the aioli tasted like regular mayo. The oysters were good. I tried the BlackBerry and Fat Baby oysters. The fat baby's were my favorite with their decent size and salinity. Service was ok. I had to go to the bar multiple times to place an order even when it wasn't busy so I'm not sure how service is assigned to the tables in the bar area that aren't directly at the bar. While I waited for service I read up about the story of the local motorcycle riding cat that inspired the owner of the restaurant. It was nice to see the blurb on the menu and an interesting story. Decent local place to check out and grab a drink and try something from their menu.

Yelp
Amazing happy hour food and drink specials! There is a lot of food on the happy hour list. I like the ambiance as well. You can order fancy hot dogs, oysters, or a Cuban sandwich...we ordered all 3 and all 3 food items were delicious! Our marghatini's were tasty as well.

Yelp
I really enjoyed late night happy hour at Motorkat. We stopped through on the way home for a few drinks and a bite to eat. At the time we arrived they were only serving oysters which I didn't mind but it would've been nice if they had at least one other option of fries. The drinks were really good and the service was excellent. Only two bartenders but they were very attentive and friendly. The overall ambiance was nice, I was able to comfortably have a conversation and catch up on football highlights. I'll definitely be back and recommend the oysters, lemon drop and margatini!

Yelp
Absolutely adore the staff and the atmosphere! This place has a great happy hour and if you love Oysters, say no more! The place is always clean and it's a great place to sit at the bar, have great conversations, watch them kill some amazing drinks while they make you feel Loved! They also have a great outdoor area that feels so private and welcoming! Def a place to check out if your visiting the Takoma Park area!

Yelp
A friend told us about this restaurant and I'm so glad she did!! A nice change from my typical spots. Friday evening reservations were full and and I called and was told the bar might be an option. We took a chance and were able to get seats there. The restaurant and bar-area was packed and lively! There are bar seats on either side of the bar-room and the wait staff and bartender make rounds to take order on that side-which is where we were seated. We had to get up and go to the actual bar to order and to play the bill. We enjoyed sipping Chardonnay and Moscato. My friend had the Katfish and chips, I ordered the Artic Char dish and we shared the fried oyster appetizer. I love artic char and it was most amazing! The fish and veggies were cooked to perfection and the miso, maple and aioli oil broth was so divinely flavorful that I asked for a spoon so I could savor every drop! My friend loved her crunchy fish and chips. The oysters, although flavorful, were a little bit overcooked and chewy. They have a dessert menu although we were too full to order it this time. I want to come back to try brunch soon! Please note that a 20% fee is added to the check.

Yelp
Our go to spot when we want to stay close to home. Cocktails, oysters and snacks are consistently great and so is the bar service

Yelp
Delicious brunch option! We stopped in just before 11 am, before the brunch rush. The restaurant has a lovely outdoor space, as well as plush, velvet booths and black leather booths. Our server, Mia, was excellent. She got our drink orders quickly and came back for our food orders, and asking if it was okay that the oysters came out first before the rest of the food. I ordered an iced coffee and the potato rosti which was absolutely delicious. It has pickled onions, an herby and lemon-y sour cream, jammy egg half, smoked and spiced salmon, and microgreens. I devoured it. There were a lot of interesting drinks and other brunch options, and I'd love to come back for dinner too!

Ebony M.

Yelp
I want to like this place because it's in my neighborhood. But I've had some questionable service a few times. The wrong food was brought to me after 15 minutes of just sitting there. That was when I was able to mention that no one has acknowledged me or given me water. This prompted them to bring me menu. My order was taken and one item never came. I wasn't checked on and then had to point out the missing item. I was finally able to order again. One drink was taken care of but it's the principle behind delivering good customer service that I question.

Yelp
Happy hour review The happy hour is one of the better deals in the area as far as the price and quality for drinks and food. The oysters were fresh and delicious! Service at the bar was great. Wings & lobster roll were so good. But Not a huge fan of the Cubano. Kate and Julio are two of the best bartenders!! They were both so attentive, friendly and made excellent cocktails. I've been a couple times and it's always nice to be remembered and greeted with a warm welcome. The vibe of the place is very neighborhood bar with great music and familiar places. Highly recommend for a great happy hour.

Yelp
My new favorite local spot! Heard about this place from a friend and went twice in 24 hours because I enjoyed my experience so much. The vibe feels like cheers, where everybody knows your name. The bartenders are friendly and attentive. The drinks are affordable and so good! The food is absolutely delicious. The Maryland Bluefish is flavorful, meaty, and light! Highly recommend trying it as a seafood option.

Yelp
We visited a little while ago, but didn't want to forget to write this amazing review. Ambiance is super cute and cozy. It was an amazing dinner! We started with a dozen raw oysters which were super fresh and delicious. We started with the house chips and dip, and pumpernickel with garlic butter. Both were very flavorful and would order again. We shared a bunch of small plates - long stem broccoli with a yummy chili garlic sauce, smoked wings and the mussels. Mussels were the show stopper for sure! Storm was our server and he was great!

Sheila W.

Yelp
The food was excellent and nice atmosphere. The restaurant is in a great area, Takoma Park. Will go again.

Yelp
We had a great meal. It was similar to the old Republic that was in its location. The food was fresh, delicious, with great variety. The service was excellent. I can not wait to go back. The star of our meal was the short ribs and the sweet potato cake. That sweet potato cake tasted like Thanksgiving on a plate!!
google avatar

Emily P.

Yelp
One of the best happy hours in the area! Oysters were fresh and delicious at a great price point and the bar was attractive and welcoming. I think the price point is very reasonable in comparison to other places in the wider DC area but maybe a little expensive for Takoma Park in particular. We really enjoyed our drinks here and would love to return for dinner.

Yelp
I am super-impressed with Motorkat. Their food is innovative, tongue surprising, beyond what the average home-cook would produce - in other words, worthy of dining out. While at the same time, unpretentious, born of the clever combination of a few quality ingredients, familiar dishes with a welcome twist, and done extraordinarily well. I have twice been thrilled by the Katfish and Chips, with its extraordinary sides of home made tartar sauce and pickled onion and red chili condiment. The brisket burger (sadly no longer on the happy hour menu) is one of the best burgers around. The vegetarian dishes - I have tried the Japanese eggplant and the Autumn salad - are pleasing. Another standout is the burrata, served with show-stopping toasted garlic bread (how do they elevate it so??!!) and sweet and sour cherry tomatoes. There have been some disappointments too: the pressed sandwiches that now appear on the happy hour menu - we sampled all of them - will not be ordered again. And the oysters, supposedly a specialty of the house, were over-chilled and not too tasty. Any chance of reviving the divine oyster sliders from the Republic days? Desserts are not a high point. But eat your way around the menu, and you are guaranteed to find a dish to die for. Prices are reasonable given the quality: not cheap eats, but not budget-blowing either. High marks for service and ambience too. All in all, a place I have been returning to. Reservations recommended.

Yelp
IF YOU'RE READING THIS COME HERE!! I came here on a Wednesday night to celebrate my cousin's birthday and let me tell you, they treated us so well!! My cousin originally ordered The Motortini and I ordered the Hefe draft beer. This beer was so delicous it had a smoky finish; perfect for the dozen oysters we ordered. Julio, the manager and bartender was absolutely amazing!! He made sure we had an incredible time and even treated my cousin to a free shot for her birthday! Other good we enjoyed were the Head-On-Tiger-Prawns and their limited edition short ribs SO GOOD!! If you have an oyster craving I definitely recommend coming here as they have a $1.50 oyster special going on for happy hour which are weekdays open-6pm and 10-close every night!! ALL IN ALL COME HERE!!!

Howard P.

Yelp
Oysters both raw and baked excellent. A couple of us had fish stew, sauce great taste. Wife had whole grilled trout. Very tasty. Service prompt very courteous and friendly. Hope was great. We were comped after dinner coffee since there was a delay. Very nice touch. Very importantly noise level was acceptable. Highly recommend

Yelp
It was a great time with the family. I had the fried chicken curry with lentils. It's was fried well and tasted great. I also ordered and Old Fashion. Great service and the right amount of attention. Appreciate all this group is doing for Takoma Park and their establishments. They all don't disappoint!

Yelp
Another gem in Takoma park. The entrance is unassuming but as soon as you open the doors, you are hit with a bustling crowd, low lighting, and a warm vintage vibe. It was a pleasant summer evening so we decided to eat out back in the patio. Our server was personable, friendly and helped us pick a few items off the menu. Motorway emphasizes sourcing ingredients locally, so we picked a few dishes to share between 3 people so we could try all parts of the menu. Started with the zataar honey wings which were good, a bit sweet which over powered the zataar. HIGHLY recommend the lobster roll, the lobster was so fresh, well seasoned (kinda reminded me of a tuna salad but elevated) and I liked how it wasn't fleshy the way large lobster chunks can be sometimes. The curried chicken was a huge portion and the thighs were well seasoned and had a flaky crust that was delightful. It wasn't heavily coated in breading. However, the curry sauce tasted kinda vague and I wish the forbidden rice had more flavor. Pistou salad is another generous portion, loved the zesty pesto dressing, the salad tasted more savory and rich with every bite. Skip the potato fries/wedge dish. Plating is funny also wedges were nothing special. We ended the dinner with the banoffee trifle, SO so good and filling, it was like banana pudding but more fun with dulce de leche, cookie crust on the bottom, brûlée bananas. Divine! Overall, the vibes, varied food options, and good service makes Motorkat a spot I would come back to.

Yelp
I came for the happy hour oysters and missed happy hour by one minute. So I had to come back another day, and I was very happy that I did. Offering oysters for $1.50 will always be an eye catcher. Unfortunately, I did not get more photos of my food but everything was really tasty and I was truly surprised by the curry rice dish. The interior is absolutely gorgeous. I took a lot more video than I should have, but I couldn't help it. They also have an outdoor beer garden kind of area, which is pretty cool, especially when the weather is warm. They offer happy hour beers, wines and pints along with burgers and of course the oysters at a steal. Who can say no to $1.50 oyster??? Not me :)

Dexter C.

Yelp
Great food, drinks and ambiance. You can't lose with any of the seafood options. We will definitely be back soon!

Yelp
More like a 3.5. Brunch menu, salmon was good but left me wanting a little something more. Pretty good food and service, but nothing too remarkable. Great option for TKPK, especially to be able to get oysters and love the outdoor space. Nice that they have kids menu. Miss the Republic marquis. Will most likely try again since I'm in the area, but probably wouldn't make a special trip.

Yelp
Always a fun time at Motorkat! The service is beyond excellent and the food is delicious.

Yelp
Fun environment, original menu, great cocktails, what's not to like?! I do wish it were also open for lunch during the week.

Yelp
One of the best oyster HH in the DMV. Chill but classy ambiance, back patio, fresh oysters from the Chesapeake, and tasty cock (and mock) tails. They staff the bar with 3-4 bartenders so service is quick. Definitely a spot to keep in high rotation.
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
Before I get started, I will tell you this review has nothing to do with the taste of the food. We walked in and stepped toward the hostess. I always find it interesting when a restaurant puts someone in the front who isn't particularly pleasant. She just said, "How many?" No smile. Probably a little unhappy that she's working on such a beautiful day. No biggie, though. We get seated and are told, "Someone will be right with you." Several minutes pass. No wait staff came over to say, "I'll be right with you," or to acknowledge us. After having looked through the entire menu and finding a couple good things to order, we hadn't even been asked for our drink orders. So, we got up and left. No one noticed. It's OK, though, the restaurant we went to across the street was very good.
google avatar

Roz J.

Yelp
Spacious and quirky with an interesting menu. An OK option if you happen to be in Takoma Park. The raw bar offerings were fine. The curry fried chicken seemed like a good idea gone wrong. The coating was chalky and greasy, as if fried too long on too low heat and the flavor seemed to be not much more than a dash of McCormick's curry powder. Wouldn't order it again. Service was OK. Friendly but slow.
google avatar

Nicole S.

Yelp
I hear dinner is good but the Brunch is terrible. We ordered scrambled cheese eggs and they came out overcooked and without cheese. They made another batch that clearly had cheese but they were still tasteless. The cheese grits were the worst grits I've ever had and even the salt I added barely tasted like salt. The bacon is premade in batches like you get at a buffet so I couldn't get it extra crispy like I usually order at any other restaurant. The toast was over toasted and hard. Everything was tasteless and I couldn't even eat my food. The mimosas are good. The server was fine. But I will not be back for brunch.

Yelp
YES, YES & YES! I love Motorkat! We recently went not long after it opened and had a wonderful time! First things first -- the customer service is top notch! From the hostesses to the servers to management! Everyone is friendly, knowledgeable and welcoming! You can truly feel they want you to have an enjoyable experience! We ordered a few things this visit - gulf shrimp, lobster slider, happy roasted oysters and pork belly! The flavors in the golf shrimp were powerful yet not too overwhelming! The shrimp were cooked perfectly and the plantains were a great added touch. The lobster slider was delicious!!!! They didn't skimp on the lobster and the roll was extremely buttery and delicious! The pork belly was AMAZING! I'm not a big grits person but I enjoyed them with the pork belly. I'd love a little more crispy shallots but that's personal preference! The winner was the happy roasted oyster! They are the star of the night. The greens, the chorizo the oyster. Everything married together so well! My only complaint was that menu didn't state that the oysters come with cheese on top. I'm allergic to cheese and also don't like it so I had to send it back. They swiftly and graciously made a new set of oysters without the cheese! We have been back a few times for happy hour since and haven't been disappointed! I hope a brunch menu is in the near future because I imagine it will be just as good as the dinner and bar menu! Bravo, Motorkat!!

Yelp
Hanger steak. Perfectly cooked medium rare. Paired nicely with a hefeweizen. I don't recall the brand.

Yelp
Food - outstanding! Very gluten-free aware, which my celiac wife appreciated! The raw oysters were ALL delicious (I swear!) and expertly shucked (no pieces of shell or having to stab at the flesh to get it out). The pumpkin risotto was very nice, could have used a little more flavor, however. The japanese eggplant was stupendous, my wife kept sneaking tastes of it... the cocktail "4pm in Takoma" was divine, according to my wife. I wasn't too thrilled with the "mocktail" I had, seemed like an expensive juice and seltzer glass of "meh." However, the food more than made up for it, and the creme brulee with chocolate ganache was the pièce de résistance!! Excellent service, friendly and lively ambiance, and although pricey, you TOTALLY get a great bang for your buck!! Can't wait to go back for Happy Hour ;-)

Yelp
My wife and I live in Takoma Park and like several restaurants. But Motorkat is at a whole different level for its ambience, its drink optionsd and, above all, its savory food - including for a vegan like me.

Yelp
Stopped in for brunch on a Sunday after the market. Lots of the community in having a great time in a comfortable atmosphere.

Yelp
After the beat went faint during the pandemic, Chris Brown (restaurant entrepreneur, not rapper) and Chef Danny Wells brings back a beating heart to the central Main Street Takoma Park location. So far, though there is much much more evolution to witness, Motorkat is promising in both food and drink, and community building--with many recognizable faces back and ready to serve. Though already much praise has been thrown for the revamped raw bar and wood-fired nibs, I'm particularly impressed with possibly the best cocktail game in town, including all of Silver Spring. I understand their mascot is a car on Takoma Park's staple iron motorcycle, but Motorkat is a Furrari (apologies everyone).

Yelp
For a new restaurant this menu offers something new to the area. The menu offers a variety of options that are traditional with a twist. The refresher drink was just that - refreshing. Oysters were fresh from the sea without a doubt. The gulf shrimp was exceptionally seasoned as was the Lobster Roll. The highlight of my night was the banana dessert that I will absolutely return for. It has a caramelized banana with quality chocolate & perfectly layered. Will likely returned for happy hour and our server Storms service!
