The Best Detroit-Style Pizza Around D.C.

"Chef Paulos Belay, who co-owns Northeast pizza place with his wife, Anna Hansen, draws on his Detroit roots to quell homesickness. The result: good old-fashioned Detroit-style pizza, which can be purchased as a whole pie (eight squares), half (four), or single slices." - Hannah Yasharoff

As a Michigan native, discovering Motown Square Pizza in DC was comforting! The crust was perfectly crisp on the outside, while the inside remained light and fluffy. Beyond the pizza, the staff at Motown Square Pizza exudes warmth and hospitality. They take pride in their craft and are eager to share their recommendations, making the dining experience feel like a community gathering rather than just a meal. Would recommend the Belle Isle! For anyone craving authentic Detroit-style pizza, it’s an absolute must-visit.

I was going to hit 4 stars last night for one reason only, a lack of sauce and pepperoni that isn’t flavorful. But that would not be fair. This is almost perfect Detroit style pizza. It is greasy and the cheese is perfectly burnt to the sides. They need more sauce and pepperoni with flavor, but don’t let that stop you. If you like Detroit style pizza, this is the go-to in dc.

Detroit-Style Pizza is my favorite food of all time, and I’ve discovered the best place for it at Motown Square DC. I ordered the Jerome’s in the House, and it exceeded even my highest expectations. The toppings tasted incredibly fresh, the texture and consistency of the cheese was perfect, plus that crust though! That perfect caramelized, crispy + airy finish in each bite. The pickup process was smooth, and I received a pizza that was at the ideal temperature and packed with flavor. This is my new go to spot, I’m definitely looking forward to working my way through this menu.

The food is yum, but the experience was yuck. On a Friday at 6pm: 2 of the 3 menu items I tried to order weren’t available, my pizza was missing 1 of 3 ingredients, and THAT lil dribble of hot honey was $1.50 even though the menu says $0.50. The spot is essentially a pickup window for Motown and a couple other restaurants with a few stools and a counter. The other restaurants you could order on the tablet on your own, but not for Motown? Watched a couple folks walk out cause no one came to help them. Finally had to get someone’s attention to ask if they were even open. Unclear who works for which restaurant. Just order your pickup from home or get delivery and hope the food you want is available.

I had extremely high hopes for this place only to be utterly disappointed! The pizza was absolutely disgusting and as a Detroit native, it taste nothing like Detroit style. The pizza was gummy and not cooked also flavorless. I appreciate the fact that it's black owned and the staff was nice and accommodating but the pizza is trash!!!! I had to take home and try to rebake it was so gummy it kept falling apart hence the mush in the photo.

I was all too excited to try this place. When I opened the box I noticed the pepperoni was burnt! I took a bite of the pizza and instantly my mouth was inflamed with heat to my surprise hot peppers were mixed into the pizza sauce. I don’t eat anything spicy so that was quite the surprise. Also the pizza does not taste like traditional Detroit style it has an Ethiopian spin to it you can really taste the Ethiopian spices. All in all this was NOT what I was looking for. If I had to rate this pizza I would rate it a 2. This is without a doubt the worst so call Detroit style pizza I have ever tasted. Avoid this place if you can.

If you check my profile, you’ll see that I’ve reviewed over 300 pizza establishments in the DMV region. I can say with full confidence this is the BEST pizza I’ve had to date. If you’ve never had Detroit-style pizza please do yourself the favor and look no further. We had The Motor City, the OG, and The Woodward and were blown away. The ingredients were fresh and spices were incredible. 10/10!

The pizza is ok! It’s nothing to run back to. Maybe in DC it’s the only or better D-style pizza but in MD we have a few spots that sell this style and they are less salty and better tasting. The service is horrible here. There are many little take out restaurants in this one space. I ordered ahead and the order still wasn’t ready on time. No parking in the area and construction big time. Be prepararse to wait and stay patient. Many off the pizza options were OUT OF STOCK and the pasta isn’t available on the toast takeout menu! Got the basic cheese and basic pepperoni and they are basic.
