Moulin d'Alotz

"In this 17C Basque watermill nestling deep in a picturesque vale, a new conservatory extension commands a fantastic view of the countryside and lush green garden. In summertime, your nostrils will be titillated by freshly cut herbs served as appetisers. This mill is emblematic of the ecological, humanist and gastronomic ethos of chef Fabrice Idiart. The chef’s signature menu, “Ital”, features an exemplary harmony between plant and animal ingredients, in which ineluctable vegetables are underscored by plant and spicy sauces that characterise Fabrice’s distinctive, unorthodox approach. For example, the chef, also a reggae fan, crafts dishes ranging from a medley of sweet potato and cockles or delicately cooked hake à la plancha, jazzed up with a pil-pil sauce and scattered with aromatic herbs from the garden to wagyu beef reared in Navarre, a marvellous cut of marbled meat, enhanced by a Romanesco cabbage and broccoli." - Michelin Inspector

For the past three years, celebrating our wedding anniversary at Moulin d'Alotz has become a cherished tradition, and for incredibly good reason – it is, quite simply, the perfect place. Each visit reinforces our belief that this restaurant is truly special. What continues to astound us is the ever-evolving creativity of the menu. While we aren't strictly vegetarian these days, the vegetarian tasting menu is an absolute must-try. It's a testament to ingenuity, offering dishes that are not just meat-free, but utterly unique and, frankly, heavenly. Each course beautifully spotlights a single vegetable, showcasing its versatility through three completely different and inspired preparations. It's a culinary journey of discovery with every plate. Beyond the exceptional food, the wine pairings are always impeccable, thoughtfully chosen to enhance each delicate flavor. The restaurant itself exudes a perfectly balanced atmosphere – both cozy and elegant – a reflection, we feel, of the Chef's own artistic spirit and passion. What elevates Moulin d'Alotz even further is the warmth and attentiveness of the team. They remember us year after year, and their genuine welcome makes us feel incredibly special on our anniversary. Their contribution to making our celebration truly memorable cannot be overstated. Every visit to Moulin d'Alotz is more than just a meal; it's an experience – consistently amazing and a highlight of our year. We eagerly anticipate our next anniversary celebration there!

Disappointing Experience for a special Birthday - Far from Michelin Standards I recently visited Moulin d'Alotz to celebrate a special birthday, expecting an exceptional evening at a Michelin-starred establishment. Unfortunately, the entire experience was deeply disappointing. The food was underwhelming, to say the least. Each dish lacked flavor and creativity, leaving us questioning how it earned such accolades. The service only added to our dismay — staff seemed disinterested and inattentive, making us feel like an afterthought rather than valued guests. After attempting to give feedback on our concerns, the waiters simply disappeared, further demonstrating a lack of care or professionalism. On top of that, most of the staff didn’t speak English, which made communication almost impossible for us, leading to more frustration throughout the night. Cleanliness was another major letdown, especially in the bathrooms, which were shockingly unkempt for a restaurant of this supposed caliber. I had anticipated a memorable birthday celebration, but instead, it was a night filled with frustrations. Moulin d'Alotz falls far short of what a Michelin-starred experience should be, and I would hesitate to recommend it to anyone seeking a fine dining experience.
