The 20 Best Restaurants In Germantown & Mount Airy

"Mt. Airy Taproom serves dishes like brisket sandwiches, fried chicken sandwiches, and steak frites along with a bunch of rotating options of local and house craft beers. The dining room is packed with TVs and rowdy Phillies fans, but you can always take your comfort food to go. And while choosing just one thing from the large menu may be more difficult than using Face ID at nighttime, we’ve got one standout dish for you: the crab cake sandwich. The patty is well-seasoned, juicy, and has just the right amount of crunch." - candis mclean

Google
Great gastro pub (if that's still a thing). Good selection of beers on tap. The onion soup was delish and I think only $7. The burger and fries were also very good. I heard the Caesar salad with a salmon added on was very good too. Very enjoyable casual night with great food. Nice servers too. Check it out.

Google
Friendly staff, great service, huge portion sizes at great prices! The food came out hot and everything was delicious. I definitely needed to go boxes! The food came out hot and everything was delicious. I definitely needed to go boxes and a bag for my leftover goodies. I arrived around 5pm on a Saturday and was surprised by the indoor and outdoor size. Driving by, it appears to be small. However, there is ample seating inside and out. There were many families that dined that night and after a couple of hours the family crowd thinned out and more mature patrons came in for dinner and libations. I met 4 people at the door of another neighborhood restaurant and bar that happened to be closed and they told me about this hidden gem. I'm glad they did and I'll definitely return. I took 1 star off because the kitchen is upstairs, so I couldn't see it; however, I would still recommend you check it out! The main area and lavatories are very clean and welcoming.

Google
We recently discovered Mount Airy Taproom and ended up coming here twice in one week. The beer list is extensive, the atmosphere is laidback, and the bartenders are friendly. I also appreciate that there is a fair bit of diversity in terms of the patrons and staff, which is hard to find outside of center city Philly most of the time. In terms of the food, I would give it a 4 out of 5, but there are a lot of options to choose from, which is nice. This place has a great neighborhood bar feel to it and I would probably be here all the time if I lived a bit closer!

Google
Definitely one of the best Onion soups I've had!! Everything we have ever ordered was delicious! Never disappointed!! Parm Truffle fries, fried zucchini, fried brussels are a must, the sauce is so good. The drinks are great also!! Not expensive either!! Great local place tucked away for the locals!!

Google
Bring your own atmosphere/group and eat outside. Indoors has zero sound dampening, so crazy loud and near impossible to hear, be heard or be sociable. It's potentially a great community resource, but does nothing to reduce noise levels and help facilitate actual conversations. Hence other neighbors also will not sit inside - only outside.

Google
Great neighborhood restaurant that is perfect for a family dinner, date night, or to just enjoy watching the game at the bar. Friendly and prompt staff that serve delicious food and drinks. Very affordable prices with more than enough portions.

Google
I hosted a private event in their upstairs room for about 40 people. It was a nice space with good seating and it felt cozy but not crowded. The food was great and it’s a local favorite. I like their menu options and beer list a lot. I think this place strikes a unique balance for the area with being tasty food and also well priced. My go-to is their fish and chips with sweet potato fries.

Google
This is a very nice place to eat at!! I tell you, they have the best Mac & Cheese I ever had after all of my life time. I don't know how they do it, but it is such an outstanding taste to take you on a flavor adventure. I mean this place should be so much more popular for their Mac & Cheese. The waitors and waitresses are extremely nice. Such a great reasonable atmosphere. I would tell my friends and family about this place.

Yelp
Excellent food and amazing service and ambiance on the patio! I would definitely recommend coming here!

Yelp
Very understaffed. Don't go there if you're hungry. Long wait to get seated despite empty tables. Long wait for food which was okay but definitely not worth waiting for an hour and 15 minutes or more.

Yelp
It was nice to stop by the tap room! I have been in to have a drink, but this time I ordered some food! BBQ wings & Burger with fries! I had an IPA as well! Our server was polite and was attended to our needs when necessary. The food was adequate pub food! I liked the chill after work atmosphere! I see more Happy Hours and dinners in my future!

Yelp
It's good bar food for a great price. I got the shrimp Po Boy and it was huge for $14. Wife got the crab sandwich. That was a lot of food too. The have the optional truffle fries which were perfectly crispy. Normally I have to ask for them to crisp up my fries. We also got the beer and onion soup. My wife would've preferred hers hotter but it was perfect for me. When we first arrived there was only one server manning all the tables and the bars. He was doing and awesome job too. As always appreciate the people that bring you your $h!t. That's not an easy job. The place is a lot larger than I thought it was. Looks like they have a huge outdoor area I'd love to try.

Yelp
Philly is a city of many small neighborhoods. Mount Airy/Chestnut Hill is one of few that offer an intimate small-town charm. Nestled next to Lincoln Drive, Mount Airy Tavern is a local spot that juggles the paradox of being a dive bar and family-style restaurant. Environment This restaurant is a nice embodiment of exposed brick and gentle conversations.I've only sat inside on one occasion and the service was prompt yet inviting. Food This is where the restaurant truly shines. Yes,they have a handsome selection of local beers but the food outshines them all. Typically, I grab the Cajun Shrimp Pasta(only for those that can handle and appreciate spice) but if you're on the hunt for a quick snack the Parmesan Fries are also delightful. THE SAUCE Without question, this is my favorite restaurant in the Chestnut Hill/Mount Airy area. I would recomened this place to anyone looking in need of of a restaurant for a modestly priced first date or somewhere to rest your work demons. Happy eating!

Yelp
The food was tasty, gastropub faire. The service was good and everyone was very friendly. The ambiance was nice expect that it was very cold since it was winter.

Yelp
Expect Traditional, no frills pub food. I enjoyed the fish & chips and French onion soup. Good service. Laid back atmosphere. Nice local spot.

Yelp
Hi I'm a valid customer from the mt airy area . Now this business has only been open for 4 yrs . The owner is horrible he is barley even there to supervise his business . He is understaffed and also has a small and poor menu selection I wouldn't suggest going there either unless you want to be robbed for tips . I got charged on my receipt as a large party gratuity because a server in there restaurant by the name of Carolyn s is money hungry for tips I've never seen such a thing implemented in my life and I've been going to that location of business for years when it was goat hollow better staff and service this guy has been there for 4 yrs and thinks he's intangible

Yelp
This place gets an easy 5 stars, and outstanding Mt. Airy institution. Very respectable draft beer selection, including a cask, okay number of vegetarian selections (check out the vegetarian Bahn Mi or the Hummus appetizer), more than reasonable serving sizes, very pleasant outdoor seating, and even during busy hours, the servers are so attentive. My deputy Yelper has given consistent 5 stars to the Streak Frites as well as the MATR Burger. The Fried Brussels Sprout appetizer is very good, but be forewarned - it's huge, so plan on sharing or skip your entree order. The Fish & Chips, Shrimp Po'Boy, and Crab Cake Sandwich - all very good, with fries or substitute the salad. Nice presentation, with pickles, etc. My only minor complaint is that the Veggie Burger is not house-made, so it seems a bit perfunctory. It's okay, but not a favorite. I can heartily recommend the brownie dessert, and the beignets are good. I recommend calling to reserve a table, especially if you want the outdoor seating.

Yelp
Nice place! Food was good and service was on point. I had a steak frites which was tasty and my partner had the fish and chips. Overall very pleased.
google avatar

Yelp
The food is great and so is the beer. Service is swift and courteous. The place is a bit noisy but that's on account of all the jollity. But when are they going to get those tables and chairs off the sidewalk. The pandemic is over. I don't want to see your dang food. I'm walking here!

Yelp
A wonderful, solid, 4 star pub in my favorite section of Philadelphia near my all-time favorite former g-friend's house. So I get to stalk her out, (only kidding, my sweetheart Honey Dearest), ponder the lovely memories and scars and enjoy a couple of the fantastic selection of brews on tap! Oh yea, and the food...I can eat. Ready? My "old", much older friend and I started with the Honey Sriracha wings. The cook of the wings was perfect, not breaded, just fried, but they were small in size and quantity. I wonder if the one-pound weight specified on the menu which equaled 8 half wings on the plate was just an estimate or the standard for all of you Cost Accounting majors. One may think at that teeny-tiny wing size there would be 10 half-wings to a pound...just sayin'. The Honey Sriracha was ok, not better than average. The fried chicken sandwich was very nice, crispy cooked, a great size, with undercooked fries on the side. This I would definitely order again, not the wings. The Crab Cake sandwich was a great reco from our YELP crowd here. A do over fer sure. Love the interior set-up, size and of course our bar service was worth the price of a re-visit on her own. Overall, everything was very good and a step below perfect. Be back soon!

Yelp
Stopped here on a whim when my favorite takeaway burger place closed early. Myself and my younger son both got burgers. My 14 year old got a fried chicken sandwich. The portion sizes were absolutely humongous. The burgers tasted a bit burned tbh and even though I never said it aloud my 11 year old said it for me. The truffle parm fries were yummy and the desserts were tasty as well.

Yelp
Good vibe, great price, A Neighborly place to visit. They have pretty decent vegan options as well. Service is pretty fast and their tea selection is pretty top tier. If your in the neighborhood take a visit
google avatar

Dom A.

Yelp
This neighborhood bar went through a couple of different owners but it's a nice little spot that has a good vibe. I went there to watch a Sixers game and grabbed a couple of beers at the bar. It seems like a family friendly place as well. I'll have to go back and try their fish and chips and there brunch after reading some good reviews

Yelp
Mount Airy Tap was my favorite place to eat at when I lived in Mt. Airy! I ordered the Bourbon Bacon BBQ Grilled Chicken and it blew my mind how good it was. The chicken was moist and not over cooked. It was smothered in bourbon bbq sauce, where you actually could taste the bourbon flavor! The bacon was thick. As if that wasn't enough, the chicken was smothered in a sharp cheddar and ranch dressing! This meal was incredible! They also have a very good draft list as well! Of course they'll have your Philly favorites & local beers. But they'll also include a few Belgiums as well!
google avatar

Scott R.

Yelp
It's ok. Needs a new better menu in my opinion. But always friendly and nice outdoor seating when it's warm. Food wise, meh

Antwain S.

Yelp
The food was good with a nice inviting area inside and out. The only reason I give it 4 star is because my waiter was very slow and seemed like she didn't know what to do, had to ask many times for things.
google avatar

Cassandra M.

Yelp
Overall food was good. Didnt like the truffle oil on the fries. Would order just garlic parm. Would NEVER order the french onion soup again. Mushy onions and cheese just a clumped ball. Will order again, just not the soup.

Warren B.

Yelp
SERVICE 7/10 FOOD 6.3/10 BEER LIQ 8/10 VIBE 3/10 The music sucked and played out of one small speaker and can hear everyone's convo. (Library vibes with a bar) Deviled eggs bland. How do you mess that up honestly. Wings needed salt and more flavor all around. Quality of chicken was fine but not worth $13 for a lb when the bones weigh a quater lb or more. Nope. The fried zucchini app was ok again bland. Even the sauce. New chef needed and a taste tester required asap. Won't be back to sum it up. GOAT HOLLOW was better. The place before This.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place! My girlfriend ordered dinner for me through DoorDash and it was amazing! The steak frites was cooked to perfection and the salad was very fresh. The mussels OMG!!!! So freaking good. Last but not least, the burger was so juicy and flavorful. I returned two days later for a takeout order this time I had the crab cake sandwich, wings and another burger lol. I'm convinced everything is good on the menu. Will definitely be returning

Yelp
Great drinks, not far from home and good food. Would highly recommend folks visiting and getting one of their delicious cocktails
google avatar

Yelp
Always good. Parking always annoying, but worth it! I like that their menus stays the same, foundationally, and they switch with interesting add-ons seasonally.
google avatar

Holli G.

Yelp
I met a friend here for dinner the other night and was not disappointed. I have ordered takeout from them but haven't been to the actual restaurant so it was nice to see where my food was coming from. I liked that they had a large drink selection. My friend and I got Seville's eggs to share which were great and I had a burger which was good quality and came with fried as well.

Paul S.

Yelp
Wanted to like this place because it's walkable for us. Great vibe, ....friendly atmosphere....the kind of bar you want to sit at and have dinner....but then the food comes out....WTF....raise your prices if you have to, but upgrade the quality of your menu and you'd have a great place.
google avatar

Tara S.

Yelp
Came here with the parents and we really enjoyed ourselves. For appetizers we ordered wings and Brussels sprouts. Brussels sprouts were out of this world. Would comeback jsut for them. The wings were also tasty. The French onion soup was delicious. My dad ordered a Cajun pasta but they didn't include the sausage which was advertised on the menu. The steak I split with my mom- it came with a side salad and we upgraded the fries to truffle fries. Steak and fries were delicious- I wasn't a fan of the dressing on the salad but my mom enjoyed it! Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Bronwen P.

Yelp
I love the food & beer selection here. Such a neighborhood gem! The service & atmosphere are excellent as well. I'm so glad I found it!

Gualtier M.

Yelp
Our male server was terrible. He wasn't very attentive. Our food was cold and always brought late by someone else. It took forever to get the check than too long for him to swipe our card. I've had him twice and a female waitress once. She was fine.

Amelia S.

Yelp
Loud with many TVs throughout the space, which they would not turn down or off. Food was good. Probably good for taking large groups of children, which is the group that sat next to us.
google avatar

Sabrina J.

Yelp
This is a really great restaurant. I bought a house in the area a few months ago and have gotten take out as well as dined in. The food and the service are both really great. Also, the place was poppin on a Tuesday night, which is a great sign. I look forward to eating here many times in the future and working my way through the whole menu!
google avatar

Hanoch F.

Yelp
Mediocre food and indifferent service. I live close and have visited a few times. I wasn't given the opportunity to express my dissatisfaction with my meal last time because staff didn't communicate. Dropped food and ran. Never asked anything. Fish batter tasted like flour. Fish served on top of salad. Hot greasy caeser anyone?

Ian L.

Yelp
Good service. Decent food. Outdoor dining when the weather's nice. Great selection of beers on tap.
google avatar

Liz R.

Yelp
We decided to give this new place a shot since the grand opening madness seemed to have subsided. There were lots of fun options for appetizers so we went with the bourbon honey bbq wings, bacon and blue cheese mussels and crab Mac and cheese (not pictured). All were mediocre at best and the mussels were VERY salty (& I am someone who likes salt). I would generally sop up the broth the mussels are in with the bread provided but I couldn't even do that because the salt content was that bad. We also tried to MAT Burger which has caramel used onions, mushrooms and gruyere. Again, mediocre at best. The fries that came along with it were pretty good and crispy though which was a nice surprise. There was nothing about this dinner that made us say we'd come back again. So, we came, gave it a shot, and we won't be back.

Robert W.

Yelp
If you enjoy eating thick, oregano-centric marinara sauce with a spoon, order MATR's tomato soup. Without exaggeration, the soup would be terrific over a bowl of pasta (which isn't offered here). As for the shrimp po' boy, the shrimp were crisp and perfectly fried. My problem is they're served on a HUGE soft roll, which is about the size of a half loaf of bread. A previous reviewer's photo is captioned that the po'boy filled him up BEFORE he even got to his fries---No Wonder. I've also had their steak and burger, both ordered Medium-Rare and that's how they arrived. Kudos to the kitchen/grill-meister, since it's difficult to receive a Med-Rare beef order in PHL--it's usually overcooked or bloody. Not here. The beet salad was also terrific as were the fries (each visit) and my wife enjoyed her salmon entrée. The tap list is well thought out and extensive, with something for everyone--another plus. I hope the owners rethink their po' boy roll/tomato soup offerings which would put MATR well ahead of the curve.

Deann W.

Yelp
I used to think I didn't like mussels but I'm starting to really like them when done right. This generous portion we split was served with bacon, orange, Allagash White, and butter. My husband got the Crab Cake Sandwich and I got the Bourbon Bacon BBQ Grilled Chicken sandwich. We'll definitely be back to try some of the other dishes on the menu! Service was excellent and the owner stopped to talk and ask what could be done better. It's nice to know they care about the customer experience.
google avatar

Dominic L.

Yelp
Delicious food and a great vibe at this local establishment. I have been here before under another name but the food and some of the servers remain in top form. The shrimp po boy was absolutely overflowing with delicious fried shrimp. I had to eat half of them before being able to close the sandwich. Definitely something I would order again. My friends had the fried chicken sandwich and the burger. Both looked tasty and were devoured quickly. The fried zucchini was crisped to perfection too. I'm glad I got to visit this place again! I will be back for sure.
google avatar

Liz W.

Yelp
First off, I've never been disappointed and I've been here 6-7 times this past year. Second, the food is not just ok, its awesome. From the buffalo chicken mac &cheese, to their (both veggie and beef) burgers, to the beet salad, they don't underperform. Lastly, the beers on tap are always delicious!

Sheena E.

Yelp
Good morning I'm looking for a really good hair salon that will help my edges grow back in my back and my front had been effected from relaxers and pulling. From extensions

Danielle B.

Yelp
It's 46 degrees out. We are stuck on the patio because "the owner wouldn't want us inside". I would like to state that we were a party of 7 which was a professional meeting for my company. We selected this place due to it being open on a Monday. The attitude immediately given was an issue. We sat outside as directed. We asked for an additional heater but we "weren't allowed" to move the heater. So. We are outside. Freezing. Because we aren't "allowed" inside but the waiter let us know that we should have been fine with the one we have. A few utilized the side yard for smoking yet we were told we "could not" smoke there despite two employees smoking. Now the cook is smoking across the street. I'm not certain of this place or what's going on but we will not be back. The weirdest part of the situation was the constant "my owner wouldn't like". Not the waiter or establishment saying we did wrong just the "ghost" existence of an owner reprimanding us.

Matt C.

Yelp
Good comfort food at good prices. Friends like the beer menu. Park in the CVS lot. Try the Parmesan fries. Can't go wrong with the French onion soup.
google avatar

Alex L.

Yelp
Nice neighborhood spot with great food, solid beer list and friendly service. The newly expanded outdoor seating area is perfect for warm weather enjoyment.

Susan K.

Yelp
Very friendly "local " Staff is attentive, and very focused when I said I had a gluten issue. High standards for food, so even if you're just getting a burger it's a great burger. Good selection of craft, beers, and fun events. And don't think anyone slacked on cleaning! This is a neighborhood hang out, and friends will let you know if you have toilet paper on your shoe!
google avatar

Rachel M.

Yelp
Disappointed. Again. I've tried so hard to like MATaproom. I want to. I do. Maybe carnivores have better luck. Ordered the mushroom soup which might have been okay as a cup o soup. As a bowl, it was just way too heavy. It felt like eating condensed soup that hadn't been diluted. On second thought even a cup might have been too much. The seitan buffalo wings were, in a word, terrible. Dunno if they were overcooked but they were dry and just tasted bad. There was also very little buffalo sauce. I've had veggie wings many times and I usually love them but these, I literally couldn't/wouldn't eat. Very disappointed. Will only come here for beer from now on!

Yelp
In this age of COVID, this is one of the few places I feel comfortable eating at. We're still being really careful and at the moment I will not eat at any indoor dining establishment, and I'm not a fan of sitting on the sidewalk or in the street on Germantown Ave. in Chestnut Hill. Those places lot a little too close for comfort. Mt. Airy Tap is really nice in so much as they have a nice outdoor space off the street, where they keep the tables appropriately spread apart. The service is great, and so it the food. I really like their French fries. I also like that they serve their food on proper ceramic plates and the drinks come in real glasses, with a generous pour. They also have seating out on the sidewalk, which I would still prefer over anything along busy G'town Ave. I was a fan of this place already before the Spring, but looking at their set up since opening for outdoor dining after the big shutdown, I'm an even bigger fan.

John L.

Yelp
Been here numerous times, literally no continuity. Creole mussels no taste definitely not creole. came out cold . Blackened chicken sandwich filled half the roll and was like shoe leather. when I told the waitress it was like shoe leather she laughed.
google avatar

Caroline O.

Yelp
When in the area visit this place! I am thoroughly impressed. We were seated outdoor which I think was needed for how small this place it. The portion were crazy, I order wings ( garlic and Asian flavored both amazing) entree order a salmon salad and a po boy sandwich crazy huge and actually quite good!
google avatar

Angel B.

Yelp
They've done it again!! Got there at 10:45, got a pound of wings, po'boy and a crab cake sandwich and it was Delish . The details is what I really care about I hate when a sandwich has sucky bread or lettuce... not here! They toasted the po'boy roll taste like they put butter in it, the egg wash of the shrimp was just enough crisp without being too bready, the lettuce and onion complimented everything and don't get me started on the aioli .

Jeffrey B.

Yelp
Great spot- food is great, draft lost is solid. Very kid friendly, outdoor seating. Nice rustic vibe inside.
