12 Best Restaurants in Cashiers and Highlands, North Carolina | Eater Carolinas

"If you’ve ever craved a stiff drink while shopping for fruits and vegetables, the Mountain Fresh Grocery has got you. Customers can order a martini, among other drinks, while shopping in the store. In addition to bold label wines and fancy snacks, this grocer also has a kitchen serving steaks on Fridays, hearty breakfasts, and a solid lunch setup. No, you don’t have to have a martini while pushing your cart around, but it does make for a fun afternoon." - Erin Perkins

Google
Great spot for breakfast, a quick shopping trip, and an excellent selection of wine. Breakfast is a popular time with fresh baked goods, prepared meals, coffee bar, and Bloody Mary's available. Ample seating indoors and out. Friendly staff; the owner chatted with us about how he curates the wine selection and it sounds like there will be an expanded Oregon offering. My son said it was the best breakfast sandwich he's ever had ($6 breakfast sandwich on a biscuit). Very unassuming place from the outside but absolutely worth stopping in. We look forward to returning

Google
The food is good, the service is fine, but we love the atmosphere. It's a really cool grocery inside, and I highly recommend eating here. Garden salad is fantastic!

This local Highlands market is excellent. The prepared food items which you can pick up anytime are delicious. We especially love the Italian dishes and the pizza. You can dine in and the selections are plentiful. The wine section has great wines and Steve will even order wine for you if there’s something you had in mind that is not in the store. This is definitely a go to place in Highlands for the locals and the visitors.

We’ve been coming here for years, but it hasn’t been the same since JT sold it. The food is still decent, but not worth the price given staff attitudes. The cashier was too busy socializing with the guy in front & acted like I were interrupting when she finally rang me up. The only friendly person was behind the prepared foods counter—he asked the chef my question, & the chef gave him such an ugly look, like we both should’ve known the answer. Turns out the chef was wrong about the pasta salad dressing anyway. And the orange cranberry bread was too dry. This is no @Oak Grove Market in Atlanta’s Oak Grove neighborhood. After several visits under the new owners, we’re done here.

Odd little grocery store/deli/pizza joint/coffee shop/pub in Highlands. Great stop for some quick snacks or lunch. The pizza is pretty good, nothing amazing but good. They have lots of meals prepared to go, like meatloaf, loaded potatoes, tubs of pimento cheese, sandwiches, and so on. We always stop by for a beer/wine when we drive by. It's definitely worth a visit just to say "yeah, we been there and it was....." or just to enjoy the experience of a cool little mountain "WholeFoods"

Google
We have been curious about this place for a while. Everyone we ever asked about it said it had great food. We were finally in the right place at the right time! We both decided to go with the ahi tuna with sesame dressing. The salad was large with different greens, carrots, cherry tomatoes, cucumber slices and pickled onions. Then the warm tuna was placed on top. The sesame dressing was perfect on top! Loved it. We ate outside and the weather was perfect.

Google
The grill menu looks interesting but the food was really disappointing. The burger was dry , over salted and without much taste. French fries were overcooked dry and over salted . The Turkey/ havarti/ cranberry sandwich was much less tasty than it sounds - more like a grilled turkey sandwich at seven- eleven than at a high end grocery/ grill. At $15-17 these were not cheap and they should overhaul their preparation and cooking

Dani Zuniga

Google
Everyone was quite friendly. Service was fast but the food was quite pricey and flavorless. I ordered the French toast and it felt undercooked or maybe that’s how it’s supposed to be around here. They do serve a lot of food for the price so that’s a plus.

Yelp
Great stop over for a quick pick me up. MFG seems to be a place where everyone goes to. Pizza and sandwich deli with a quick grocery for city folks. MFG seems to cater to the seasonal visitors and tourists. We found their selections very suitable for such a small town. Nothing spectacular but nice to find decent choices for sustenance and pick me ups for hikes. Their sandwiches, pizze and fresh baked breads were as good as any around Atlanta. They also have a decent selection of dry goods for picnics, light bites and wines. Nothing outrageous, but it's a bit over priced even beyond expected market up. Parking is free, shared among all the merchants, hotels and restaurants.

Yelp
If staying in town and looking for alternatives to dining out, you will find, tasty treats, wine, grocery items, baked items , and even pizza here. As typical for tourist areas, market is extremely overpriced for those who do not want to drive to the local grocery store. Located across from the white chuch at the end of the street, parking out front.

Yelp
Great vibe! Many fresh products to choose from. Had awesome hot coffee and did some last minute grocery item pickups.

Yelp
Seems to be the popular center of town spot to hit. Serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, and even has a bar that makes good old fashioned's. Stopped for breakfast today. Group ordered 2 egg breakfast, chocolate chip pancakes, corned beef hash, and a few donuts. Everyone was happy with their selections, especially the donuts! Try the double chocolate....... It's worth a stop for a drink or a meal. Nice and casual with friendly service.

Yelp
I had no idea what to expect when our lodge told us we could get a great breakfast at this grocery store! It's like The Fresh Market had a baby!! What an amazing specialty grocery store. They have fresh in house roasted coffee, grab and go farm to table goodies, fresh baked goods AND a cafe and pizzeria. We loved the breakfast so much we came back for pizza for dinner. The pizza was amazing. Breakfast was delicious as well. You've got to check this place out!

Steve E.

Yelp
Just awful , no wonder very few locals frequent the place and it's dependent on gullible out of towners . Depressing, rude and indifferent best describes the vibe in this place .
google avatar

Yelp
Wow!! Amazing!!! We were visiting the area for a girls' weekend and had a little cabin. We wanted to buy a premade meal to take back with us. It's pricey, but worth it. The food is homemade and delicious. The owner even talked with us and let us know they used family recipes. We got the meatloaf from the deli, the mashed potatoes, and a frozen pizza. We also got groceries ($9 for 2 sticks of butter-yikes!) and some bread. Everything was easy to make (instructions included). They also had a restaurant section that was very busy, so we'd love to come back again! The convenience of the food and grocery was really great. They also had a decent wine section that we would have spent more time in if we hadn't brought our own on the trip. It has everything you need and was welcoming and friendly.

Yelp
Not too broad a selection of your typical grocery Store (i.e. Ingles, Kroger) items, however this place had just the right essentials for our trip. Great selection of beer + wine! Staff was also super friendly.
google avatar

Kylar W.

Yelp
The staff is rude and seems annoyed to assist you. This could be a really cool place if the people were more pleasant. The guy who appeared to be the manager was the least welcoming.
google avatar

Jenny G.

Yelp
I stopped here today to purchase some water. While there, I saw they had a coffee bar. My husband and I both got coffee. He got drip coffee and I got the mountain mocha coffee. Both were delicious and made right. The service was excellent as well. The food looked good but we didn't try anything because we had already eaten prior to stopping here.

Yelp
Good NY-style pizza? Absolutely. Snafu with the order... no bueno. When the cook mis-reads the 16" order as a 10", don't justify the error... offer the 10" as an apology while the customer waits for the 16" they already paid for. There weren't many customers today... and we saw no one with pizza. We waited 20 mins only to be told about the error AND THEN we had to wait AGAIN for the 2nd pizza. (Ordered at 12:01pm pizza came some time after 12:40.) 2ndly, why a cardboard box for an eat-in order? Thoughts to ponder.

Yelp
Having a hard time giving the "grocery" 3 stars. Lots of points to my review - so I am apologizing in advance if I get a little wordy. Let me start off saying, I've been going to the "grocery" for a long time when I am in town. Although, I haven't been in about 4-5 years. On a recent trip, i arrived at our home and needed to put together an easy dinner. I remembered the "grocery" having good pizza, deli items, and a nice selection of wine. Well, either my memory is fading or things have changed. As many know, highlands is a busy little town during the "season". I was so happy to find a parking spot right up front. We walked in and it was not as busy as I remembered. I'm sure I looked confused walking around - because I was. The store just didn't have the same vibe. Honestly, I didn't find it to be as clean as I remembered. There is a portion of the store that makes breakfast items. I am not reviewing that b/c I paid zero attention to it. I quickly looked at some of the items in the "deli" and kept walking. As for the wine: yes, they have an area dedicated to wine. Prices are moderate range to very expensive. I love my cabs- and I bought 3 bottles. But again, there was a limited selection unless I wanted to drop some serious coins. Pizza: the pizza store is accessible from the "grocery" and a door outside. The individual who took our order was very nice. The menu is on the wall next to the cashier. There are 2 sizes- 10" and 16". I ordered 3 pizzas - paid - and was given one of those vibrating buzzers to let me know when our order was ready. We opted to sit outside at one of the tables till our order was ready because there was not a lot of room in the pizza area. The pizzas survived the drive back to our house. Overall they were good a solid 3 stars. Still, I will not say great. The crust was crispy (a little tough) but the bottom was soft. To sum it up- #1) I would never call it "fresh market" #2) limited selections and expensive #3) needs a deep cleaning #4) don't know if I will ever go back

Yelp
Ordered bbq chicken pizza and the pepperoni pizza takeout. Both were hot, fresh, and tasty. Next time, I'd love to try their breakfast, because it looked tasty!

Yelp
We were walking through Highlands and wanted to grab lunch. We ended up at Mountain Fresh Grocery. They had everything from coffee beans and wine to fresh house-made food and charcuterie items. We walked over to the food counter and placed our order. After being handed a number, we snagged a picnic table outside. The food came out very fast! Hubby and I ordered a burger with hand-cut fries and a turkey, cranberry and havarti sandwich with house-made chips to share. Both were excellent and I couldn't pick a favorite. The burger was cooked perfectly medium and was very flavorful. It was simply topped with lettuce, cheese and special sauce, (we asked for no tomato). Great meaty tasting burger, soft bun, creamy and delicious special sauce - yum! The hand-cut fries were amazing! I love that they top their fries with salt flakes. The crispy potato skin pieces were the best. The turkey, cranberry and havarti sandwich was also very yummy. Moist sliced turkey, sweet cranberry relish and melty havarti cheese. We didn't get the arugula. The flatbread was toasty and held together well. The home-made chips were ridge cut and super crunchy. After lunch, we went back in to check out the wine selection. I picked up a bottle to bring back home, can't wait to try it! Great lunch spot as well as specialty grocery store. It's definitely a go-to place while in Highlands!

Jennifer J.

Yelp
Showed up to the counter at exactly 10:57 and the very unpleasant employee (manager?) told us curtly that the breakfast service was now closed and they were "transitioning" the grill to lunch food only. Seriously? She shut down several minutes before the allotted time with customers waiting at the counter and refused to serve us. Is there some kind of special preparation that a grilled cheese requires that cannot also accommodate a scrambled egg being made on the same grill? She was unapologetic and rude! Based on other poor reviews, it appears this is the same woman being consistently rude to customers. Why does this business allow this to go on?? Won't be returning--take your business elsewhere.
google avatar

Tom S.

Yelp
Don't order their pancakes. They provide enough syrup for one and then charge $3.50 for a few more ounces of syrup. Very disappointing.

Linda C.

Yelp
It's great place to grab dinner and to go things. I just wish customer service was a thing. There is no customer service here.

Tim D.

Yelp
This is our go-to Highlands stop every time. We love it for a sandwich and a beer. But so much more. Fill your cart with wines, cheeses and deserts. Exceptionally great service. Down to earth staff & pricing in an upscale community.
google avatar

Melissa B.

Yelp
What a gem of a place! From groceries, pizza, beer and wine, coffee bar, homemade meals, to their fresh grille. We enjoyed breakfast and lunch here during our weekend in Highlands. Prices very reasonable and staff very friendly.

Patti C.

Yelp
I have never experienced such a rude employee. I asked if one of the menu items had nuts in it, cause my daughter has a life threatening allergy. This woman (Shelby) snapped at me in a way I have never been talked too. I have been in the hospitality industry for 25 years and was shocked. If she was my employee I would have fired her on the spot. The food was fine but I'll never step foot back in this store.

Cheoah W.

Yelp
Went in to buy coffee. Nice store with nice folks. It is a bit tight in aisle but they have great products in there and a nice little sitting area to eat
google avatar

Brendie W.

Yelp
This place is a cute market in Highlands. The coffee shop inside is wonderful. I had the vanilla latte, and it didn't disappoint. The doughnuts are also tasty! The breakfast from the Mountain Fresh Grocery was average, we had the pancakes which were just like pancakes you would make at home. Along with the veggie omelette which had more feta cheese than omelette. The service was absolutely terrible. I stood at the counter while 4 high schoolers talked about getting drunk the night before while starring at me. Completely disappointed in the service.
google avatar

Scott M.

Yelp
Used to be a special place, but gone down hill - in a number of ways - since new owners. And they've made it known that they don't really care about local, return customers.

Joseph Y.

Yelp
Food was great but the services is not so great. The older woman that greets you at the front rolled her eyes and seemed very unwelcoming to us. On top of that, they want to charge for an extra plate. They also charge for wifi?! Cheapskates!
google avatar

Billy B.

Yelp
Meh. Got pizza. Meh. Pizza is better at Highlands pizza. Or Slabtown Pizza. They have a nice looking selection of foods. It makes you think of Sprouts. But the pizza was so bland I don't really want to waste the money on mediocre food.
google avatar

Michelle R.

Yelp
They serve breakfast until 11 but they really mean 10:30am. It doesn't matter if you get in line at 10:40 and beg for oatmeal so that you can feed your two hungry toddlers that you've had in the car since 7am to make it in time specifically for breakfast. They give zero. Cute place but very disappointed.

Julie Y.

Yelp
I was looking for fresh produce. Definitely not the place to go for it. Lots of specialty items like unique snacks but not many healthy options. They did have good prepared food in their deli and a very friendly and helpful man who assisted me. It's just hard to find things and confusing where to check out.
google avatar

Kurt K.

Yelp
Trader Joe's serves breakfast..just kidding... but that is what it would look like if they did. A little confusing when you first get in but we grabbed a bunch of tables for our group of ten and went and got in line. The menu is straight forward and the prices are what you would expect for the location. The big value is the french toast. Imagine a small loaf of bread quartered and made into french toast. My standard breakfast of eggs, hash browns, bacon, and a biscuit was ordinary. The biscuit was toasted but I really think it was just stale. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meals and it actually came out pretty fast. If you are in Highlands NC and want to avoid the crowds on main street go to the east end, I think, and grab a bite here. While you are at it you can grab some amazing pastries at the bakery.....you won't regret it.
google avatar

Megan M.

Yelp
This place surprised me in all the best ways! I was expecting a food counter in the middle of a grocery store, so I was shocked when I walked in to a coffee bar, hot bar, deli, pizza parlor, diner, and grocery store all rolled into one. But it doesn't stop there! There is a bar with local beers, wines, and hand-crafted cocktails and there are charming bistro tables for you to enjoy all your goodies at! While I wish I had tasted their breakfast or lunch sandwiches, we got there for dinner instead so we opted for their wood-fried pizza. I got the fig and pig and was delighted by the salty sweet combo and crispy Neopolitan crust. My spouse got the carnivore, which was New York style and likewise wonderful! I wish I could eat all my meals here for the rest of my trip!

D K.

Yelp
Nice boutique grocery (abundance of alcohol just a few other things) that serves meals. Food was good, served hot, and fairly quick. The restaurant is what my grandparents would've called a "greasy spoon"--good food, locals are frequenters, and not pretentious.
google avatar

Jourdan G.

Yelp
Really cool little store, that reminds me of a smaller Fresh Market back home. The bakery looked amazing (unfortunately they were mostly sold out of items by the time we got there, a testament to all the good things we've heard!) and they had a large selection of items. We decided on getting the hot handhelds, I opted for their new Turkey-cranberry-Havarti pressed sandwich with a side of fries. It was pretty quick for being so swamped with people. Everything was hot and fresh. The fries were great, the sandwich was good with only one minor issue. When they say cranberry, they literally mean cranberries, not a relish or jelly. So it was a little tart and overwhelmed by the taste of the turkey and cheese. Otherwise, it was good!

Yelp
A great place to eat, IN A GROCERY STORE? Yep. Highlands is a pretty upscale tourist mecca in the waterfall area of North Carolina. Usually a very busy place, but Covid took it down a number of notches. Fewer people and fewer still amenities. Motel rooms are not made up or cleaned during your stay. Most lodging have cancelled breakfast buffets of dining. What does one do to eat in this semi-shuttered village? Go to Mountain Fresh Grocery. Doubtful, we entered, joining other nomads in search of sustenance. What a surprise to find a full kitchen and bakery, along with shelves of wine and food in this large store. Tables were scattered about for eating. So...read the menu on the wall. Eggs to order, the standard American array of breakfast items, yogurt, cereals, fruit...they had it all. Order, pick it up, take seats, well-spaced about a la Covid, and eat. A very efficient operation and a pleasure for visitors. People were friendly, helpful, courteous and full of suggestions as to where to go and what to see in the area. An abundant and wide selection supply of wines is available from early morning until late each night. This is where take-away or carryout takes on meaning. THIS stuff can go into your unmade-up motel/hotel room for snacking or meals. Needless to say, we were now set-up with food and beverages for our visit. Good place. More than you could imagine for a grocery store. You will see.
google avatar

Lita L.

Yelp
Here we are again, this time during Covid, and there are quite a few changes, food wise. The buffet is gone, and the yummy cold items that are to take home they used to heat up for you to eat here is no longer done for you. Our all time favorite herb crusted chicken no longer available, and the mile high mac and cheese not available today. We ended up ordering the Philly cheese melt on a hoagie roll with hand cut fries, one of the daily specials. The meat was plentiful, as well as very beefy tasting, and was served with a cup of a jus dip. The hand cut fries tasted good, although over 3/4 of them were 1 inch or less, and had to be eaten with a fork. The humanity!
google avatar

Pam C.

Yelp
had a Cuban sandwich. the worst ever! Fry's were reheated. The meat in the sandwich was hard to find and bread hard as a rock! a rottiserie chicken was dry and $13.! Never again! It used to be a lot better!

Jonathan S.

Yelp
The food wasn't good and the groceries were (comically) overpriced. They tend to nickel and dime you for everything, and have an off-putting staff that have a weird arrogance about them. Overall this was a mediocre place that offered nothing better or unique but was more expensive and less helpful.

Nick P.

Yelp
We purchased 2 chicken pot pies for 25$ each. They were by far the worst chicken pot pies I've ever eaten. They had NO filling... it was essentially 2 puff pastries with a couple pieces of veggies and chicken between them. Thank god I bought some Tabasco sauce from this overpriced market because it was the only drop of moisture in the entire meal. I used to eat "Banquet" branded pot pies in college for 1$ a piece. I should have bought 50 of those for the same price and had 20X the food. What an absolute joke this place is.... This place gouges you and takes advantage of the clientele because they're willing to pay more while away from home. On a scale of 1-100 I'd give these pot pies a 6. The only reason I give a 6 is my body still digested it and at least my family had something to eat. SCAM

Branden W.

Yelp
Great place to eat in highlands, they need to bring back the cookie ice cream sandwiches. Everyone is nice, and it's a clean place with lots of options.
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
Good breakfast selection, grocery with wine and beer. Good breakfast selection, grocery with wine and beer. Good breakfast selection, grocery with wine and beer.

Terry G.

Yelp
Informed young man behind the counter that we were visiting Highlands and asked if they served soup. He curtly responded "NO." I then politely explained (even smiled) that my wife really wanted soup and sandwich for lunch and asked if there was a restaurant nearby that did serve soup. He responded "you can ask the chamber of commerce." What a jerk.
google avatar

Jo A.

Yelp
This is far more than a grocery store. Their pizza oven area and their grill area make it an excellent "restaurant" in Highlands. Truly delicious. I always like reviews that share specifics and I can't tell you about every dish I want to recommend. I would say the grilled cheese with bacon is fabulous. It's four cheeses and thick-cut bacon, perfectly grilled. We've done their take and bake meals with great success and even ordered the meals to go in the summer. We live 50 minutes away and they packed it to ensure it was warm and yummy by the time we got home. If you'd like a grocery recommendation: Try the smoked Gouda pimento cheese...you won't be sorry.

Loren B.

Yelp
Perhaps it's time for a name change at Mountain Fresh to "Mountain Tired". We're year-round residents and like many locals enjoyed having a casual, quick, fresh, and tasty high quality dining option. Sadly after several post Covid meals yesterday's will be our last. We arrived after the lunch rush to avoid the normal tourist crowd and was able to place our order without a wait at the grill counter. After waiting for 20 minutes for the order we were presented with tired and stale fried chicken tenders and limp cold fries. The previous owners would never have allowed the meals to leave the kitchen. There's not a lack of staff but plenty of young unsupervised and listless staff willing to take your card for $14 fast food. With all the other options available in Highlands do yourself a favor and avoid this Mountain Tired tourist trap.

George T.

Yelp
Great selection and food it was the old Potts grocery store, now it's limited grocery but has prepackaged food and a counter that prepares salads, sandwiches and hot meals, breakfast was great as are the sandwiches and dinners, they have a bar and coffee service as well, well worth going there
google avatar

Michelle J.

Yelp
Cute market in a busy, touristy area in NC. We stopped here for pizza but once inside there were so many more options. There were different stations to order food from, depending on what you're in the mood for. Pizza, sandwiches, soups, desserts, coffee, craft beer... and there was one more but can't remember what it was. I ordered a pizza which was pretty good but I did find it a bit small for the price. Aside from the food stations, they also have limited groceries and prepackaged snacks available.

Mary M.

Yelp
The cook added a wad of gristle to my burger. Watch out the staff behind the food counter are surly and mean.

Jeffrey B.

Yelp
Excellent sausage and biscuits with crispy bacon. My wife had a very good stuffed omelette. To top it off, the lady working the coffee bar suggested Basil and Thyme Crackers and Brie for an afternoon snack. Quiet place for brunch.
google avatar

Robin S.

Yelp
I love this concept even if it isn't exactly unique. A relatively small grocery store carrying a good selection of products but with a wide array of prepared food - grilled, sandwiches, pizza, more. - grill has a good menu - pizza/Italian counter offers 'Italian Street Food', strombolis as well as pizza. I ordered a stromboli, which comes as two six inch sections with a tub of tomato sauce. Good dough, ingredients are fresh. - Nice beer selection - Soda fountain offers several tasty root beer drinks - Lots of seating. There are some tables in the front of the grocery section, outside and also a large area to the left. Our group of twenty-plus found seating even on a Saturday. - Very friendly staff - Single use restrooms which need more frequent cleaning. This is the only negative.
google avatar

Michael T.

Yelp
Been meaning to write a review for Mountain Fresh for a little while now. It says grocery, but it's really much more than that. Great place to eat and pick up some wonderful treats. You have to try the donuts - I believe they're made on Fridays - they are the BEST! There's a wide variety available and something to please everyone, and plenty of things to pick up and take with you as well. Consistency has been a little bit of a challenge the last year or so, but they're doing well overall!
google avatar

Patty B.

Yelp
They really burned my pizza, they knew it was burned when they put it in the box. I didn't know until I got home- thanks for that, mountain Fresh Grocery

Tabby B.

Yelp
The older gentleman behind the food counter, has to be the rudest person ever!! We are there to purchase and give business to this establishment at the very least act as if you somewhat care!!!! Unbelievable!
