Coming from Texas, I hesitated about trying Mexican food, as it never seems to meet the mark. However, I was actually impressed with MMMK. Some things hit the mark and some didn't, but overall the experience left me happy to know there is some good Mexican food outside of TX & NM
The space is nice with several different areas to dine, an outside patio, a bar patio, a bar area, and another dining space. The space is casual with lots of wood and exposed bricks dressed with local art that was cool to check out. The bar area was the most attractive space for showcasing the mixologist who was whipping up a variety of different margaritas. We opted to sit outside on the dog-friendly patio.
The service we received from the bar and our waitress was friendly, helpful, and well worth a good tip! They even exchanged a drink my friend didn't care for without any fuss.
As for the food and margaritas, I opted for the flights because I wanted to try a few of them! While they were all good, if I had to pick the top two they would be the Spice of Life (Blanco, strawberry serrano chili syrup, fresh lime, and lava salt) and the Heat Wave (Blanco, Ancho Reyes, habanero pineapple syrup, fresh lime), but honestly they are all worth a go. I also loved my friend's The Beekeeper (Mezcal, Ancho Reyes, lemon, honey, lavender bitters), but I love Mezcal. We started with the Salsa & Dip Sampler choosing corn salsa, guacamole, queso, and Verde salsa. The chips were excellent - they were crisp, had the perfect thickness, and held up well with all the dips. I wouldn't say these were the best salsas and such I ever had, but they were decent. I wouldn't get the queso again, but the rest were fine. For dinner, I had the Carnitas (Slow roasted pork shoulder shredded then pan-seared. Served with pico de gallo, corn salsa, rice, beans, & two flour tortillas drizzled with cilantro-lime crema). They were spot on - melt-in-your-mouth meat with a nice crisp. Topped them with the pico, corn salsa, and oh-so-good crema - they were awesome! Not a drop left on my plate after that!
So yeah - I'm excited there is decent Mexican food in Asheville!
