Why We Love Old Restaurants | Eater

"A small, roadside cafe in Quartzite that the writer sought out while driving from Sedona to Los Angeles; it feels like the kind of independent, out-of-the-way spot that embodies roadside nostalgia. The visit (January 2019) is remembered less for an exact menu breakdown than for the feeling: a friendly server whose approval the narrator craved, the soup of the day (recalled as beef and barley), and the low-key merch purchases — a hat for the narrator and a tongue-in-cheek "You've Got Quail" shirt for his wife. The place functions as a symbol of the pleasures of finding an individual, non‑corporate meal and the comfort of a durable, local business." - Noah Galuten

Google
amazing amazing local diner Café just off the beaten path. I was gonna go to another place that looked like a small diner a little closer to the main road, but they were closed till October 11 when I pulled up in the parking lot big sign on the window so this was my second choice. They both looked equally good and when I walked in the waitress said sit wherever you want and then she started to tell me about the specials and I said just bring me the BeST thing and she said no problem and I said don’t ask me any questions and she said no problem. Now that’s my kind of waitress that’s my kind of place. I got the chicken fried skillet. Helen was my waitress super sweet lady. She chose the skillet for me. 👍🤠🇺🇸 Special note to the owner after reading some reviews I noticed Jenn B's review and she seemed kind of unreasonable and snarky anyway it’s May 18, 2025. Trump has been in an office for the last two months egg prices have been cut in half. They are more reasonable now so I grabbed my bill and went to pay the check and low and behold there’s still an egg surcharge. So I’m here to tell you you can drop the egg surcharge or just raise your prices. Your story doesn’t hold two months later when egg prices aren’t high. They have been normalized, well, at least as everything else is expensive normalized. BTW the bathroom was very nice and clean and well stocked. Thank you for that.

The waitress was very good. Biscuits came out with the wrong gravy and had to be sent back. I asked for country gravy not the one with sausage and my first one came out with sausage. The photo is the one that's correct. The other person was halfway done before I got them back and then I still had to wait for hash browns that were greasy and not very crispy. They had been ordered extra crispy. The condiments on the table looked old and dirty. They wouldn't substitute bacon for potatoes which I think is almost vegetarian discrimination when there's no other meals specific for vegetarians. Owners reply States otherwise but that's not what happened. Ordering side orders ends up costing us a lot more. We weren't warned of an egg surcharge of a dollar and it was just on the bill. I have no problem with an egg surcharge due to egg prices, what I do have a problem with is not being told of it ahead of time. We won't be going back.

Google
I go here for their Country Fried Steak and loaded baked potatoe. The food is good. The dining area is quiet. And the staff are courteous. The food is served quickly. They seem to be a popular place, but I've not had a problem getting a table.

Google
I won't be back. I phoned in my order for pickup. A friendly young lady took my order. I ordered a Fish Basket with Coleslaw and Seasoned Fries. I also ordered a Bacon Cheeseburger with Seasoned Fries and a basket of Onion Rings. I was told my order would be ready in about 15 minutes, and it was. My order was ready when I arrived. I quickly retrieved my order, paid and returned home. The fish was dreadful. I've had better fish from the frozen food section at the grocery store. The fries were limp and soggy with grease, as were the onion rings. The coleslaw was equally horrible. The cheeseburger was okay, but it was way overcooked.

Stopped here to avoid a major traffic jam on the 10fwy. Was pleasantly surprised! Staff was friendly and gave good service. Food was tasty. We got a sirloin, burger, breakfast scramble and pancake meal, no complaints. It has a very “hole-in-the-wall” feel with a little gift shop attached. Kid friendly cafe. Would come back here again. Easy parking with a clean bathroom.

Google
Went here for breakfast. The staff continually hustled and stayed super friendly. The food was fantastic. The eggs were cooked as asked, the pancakes were huge and fluffy, the French toast was awesome. Overall a great little place with reasonable prices. I would recommend it.

Google
Great little local restaurant off the beaten path. The only drawback to this Lille gem is it’s so popular with the locals and snowbirds it’s often packed to overflowing. Be prepared to wait for table. Once inside the wait will have been well worth it, the servers are friendly and attentive and the food is hearty and well prepared, all at reasonable prices.

Google
Fun country atmosphere. Probably our third time there. The fish fry is literally an entire fish fillet. There's a gift shop as well

Yelp
We travel from California to Arizona often. This is our new favorite spot to stop and eat. The friendliest waitresses and wonderful home cooking. Breakfast, lunch or dinner. It's not fancy but very clean.

Yelp
A few turns off I-10, but worth the short detour, food was fresh and tasty, service was friendly and quick and the atmosphere made you feel at home. Skip the fast food stops and make your way here for a meal that is satisfying and delicious. It was breakfast for us, but menu items are available all day along with daily specials.

Yelp
If I could give more than 5 stars I would. Our breakfast was Absolutely Delicious. I had the Chicken Fried steak skillet and it came out hot and tasty. I ordered it with eggs over easy instead of scrambled and it was perfect with the gravy on top. The country potatoes with onions and peppers were cooked just right. It's a little off the beaten path of the Main Street in quartzite but we will definitely be going back our next time through.

Yelp
A reliable diner on your rides between LA and Phoenix. Of course we ate everything before I thought of taking a pix. Even in the dead of summer we chose a fish n chip basket. Kids breakfast. Pancakes are fantastic and we gobbled their fries. Helen is a fantastic senior waitress.

Yelp
This cute homestyle cafe gives you everything you want in classic breakfast spot! I ordered a coffee and the bacon and eggs with hash browns and sourdough toast. Our server was super attentive and the food came out super quick!

Yelp
Everything we experienced here was awesome! Helen was our delightful server! What a joy she is! Other servers checked in as they passed by with refills. This place is very clean and comfortable! Waffle Breakfast for an 8 yr old kiddo was a hit! A side of Hashbrowns rounded out his meal with OJ! Although I came here for pie... when I saw Green Chili Burger on the menu.... My heart was set on it! Served alongside delicious sweet potato fries this burger satisfied and delighted me! Hubby loved the chicken fried steak and polished off his entire breakfast while I was still piecing my burger back together! My burger simply had so much cheese and deliciousness from the very generous Roasted Green Chili the bun couldn't reign it all in adequately! What a Happy Foodie Hello to Quartzite!

Yelp
This place is a down home old fashioned local diner. Good size portions of hearty comfort food. The menu is full of breakfast lunch and dinner options. It's a modestly sized place and pretty popular. It's far enough off that it's full of locals. We stopped by while traveling through for sandwiches. Everyone enjoyed their choices. Leave room for dessert.

Yelp
Great diner fare in Quartzsite. They are a bit off the main road which is a good thing in my mind- clientele tends more locals. Had a great turkey melt here and the root beer float was top notch. Staff were friendly even to my crazy kids.

S S.

Yelp
Picked a random restaurant that wasn't from a "chain". This place did not disappoint. Large variety of home cooked meals on menu. Hubby had a delicious waffle. I had a grilled tuna melt. Food was super fast. Server checked on us several times. Anticipated our needs - gave a "to go"cup for the iced tea and box for leftovers without asking. Helen was amazing and "over the top"! Not far off the freeway, but worth the extra couple miles.

Yelp
Food was great and service was quick. Not too hard to find. Driving from Sedona to OC and was the perfect half way stop.

Dori S.

Yelp
One of the few non-fast food places in quartzite but the service was still very fast! As far as I know, the ONLY pace to get a salad here. Good food and good value. I heard tables near us complimenting on the hamburgers. Hidden among the RV parks off the main road. Definitely a bookmarkable stop. Glad I saw the sign and turned around.
google avatar

Yelp
I ordered food to go as I was traveling through. I had a grilled ham and cheese which came on Texas toast. It was tasty and well put together. I ordered coleslaw for my side. It was pretty good and house made. The girl at the cash register was very nice and polite. By the cash register, they have a cold case, full of homemade cakes and pies. I couldn't resist getting a piece of red velvet cake, which was delicious. The ambience of the restaurant is quaint and welcoming. I would definitely be a regular here if I lived in Quartzsite. The only complaint I have is that I ordered a cup of chili and I got a cup of vegetable beef soup. I was a little disappointed because I had asked for cheese and onions on the chili, which I was informed was homemade. The soup was ok.

Yelp
Always stop here route or back Arizona for a really good home made meal this am had the pancake egg meal they have daily specials

Yelp
Good place to eat after you cross over from Arizona. Prices are reasonable and the service is good. The food is good old American diner selection. Nothing spectacular but always consistent!

Jennifer H.

Yelp
We stopped by Mountain Quail Café hoping for a classic, hearty breakfast, but unfortunately, it didn't live up to expectations. We ordered the biscuits and gravy, corned beef hash, and French toast with orange juice. Right away, it was clear that everything was store-bought, canned, or frozen. The biscuits were dry and the gravy tasted like it came straight from a can. The corned beef hash lacked flavor and texture--definitely not homemade. The French toast was the most acceptable item--basic and edible--but the bread was falling apart and felt like it had been sitting out too long. As for the orange juice, it tasted like the cheapest brand you could find--more like something from a dollar store than what you'd expect from a sit-down café. If you're looking for a fresh, homemade breakfast, this probably isn't the place. A little more care in ingredient quality would go a long way.

Yelp
First time eating at Mountain Quail Cafe, I can honestly say the food, service and ambiance is very friendly. We definitely will be coming back. Love that this place has lots of veterans eating there.

Yelp
Visited 5/28/2024 Breakfast In Quartzsite AZ after Doctors Appointment. Great little home style cafe that's been serving Quartzsite residents And visitors for many years. Loretta ordered the Tasty Country Fried Steak and Eggs and and I ordered the Super Breakfast. Two Bacon, Two Sausage Patties, Three Eggs, choice of Potatoes and a Pancake. Definitely Filling. The Sausage Gravy was Excellent and The Home Made Biscuits were soft, moist and delicious. Great place if your passing through Quartzite. Looking forward to trying more of the lunch or dinner menu. Have a great day.

Yelp
On our way into PHX gas up and breakfast in AZ of course. This is off the beaten path but this'll diner is worth it. Fast turnaround, comfortable booths, Debbie our Waitress was helpful and attentive Local place that kept me out of a fast food chain.

Kell C.

Yelp
Stopped here on the road home from Phoenix. Towing a 5th wheel so we need easy in and out access. Super friendly staff, speedy service with quality food. The fries I got were hot and crunchy on the outside and creamy potato on the inside. My husband Telly emojis burger and onion rings. Looks like a really great diner menu.

Yelp
The food is fresh and the staff is happy. You can't go wrong going to the mountain quail.

Yelp
GETTING HERE: Navigate here with your GPS. Yelp does have the correct address. Just note that it's located a bit off the highway so there's a few street turns. It's planted square in front of the Mountain Quail RV/Mobile home park. Parking area is a tad small, so be aware you might have to street park if it's as busy as it was when we were here. :-) REVIEW: Quartzsite is a town I wish I had more time to explore in! All thanks be to Yelp for showing us where to eat as always. Glad to have made the stop here during brunch-ish time. It's a small restaurant with a lot of regulars, and we (inadvertently) brought most of town or out of travelers with us when we stopped. The line was out the door! It took over 15 minutes to be seated. This place was packed! Great for them and great for small businesses. Makes me happy to see the restaurant so busy with happy customers. Thank you to the 2 waitresses too who managed it all easy breezy. They also hand their hands full. Quite literally! The sausage and eggs were really good. I was a tad nervous about the link sausages, it's always hit or miss for me. These were a definite hit! Hot, flavorful, not chewy in any way. The great link sausages I remember from my childhood. :) I fully recommend Mountain Quail Cafe! Hope you enjoy the vibe and homey feel as much as we did. Thank you!

Yelp
Been stopping here since 2012 to and from Cali, can't beat the service or the price and the food is the best in town! But the Smiles are the !!!

Yelp
Tasty food, friendly service, nice local ambiance and easy to find. Been there a couple times and will surely return.

Yelp
Fantastic service and great food. No waiting. Small out of the way place which made for great ambiance

Lorena M.

Yelp
Food was delicious, service was amazing! Helen was very attentive and helpful. Thank you! Highly recommend the short detour from the freeway. There is a kids menu as well.

Yelp
Quartzite is a good gas stop on the long trek south from NoCal to Tucson, AZ. Stopped for a quick breakfast as a better bet than the hot box finds at the gas station and it was just ok and take in consideration the extra time if you need to get going. Spent 3x as much and a lil' disappointed. Server was a sweet lady, cozy locals type cafe with fresh pies in the case as you enter to draw you in haha. Breakfast food was fine but pass on the poached eggs, even with the longer time of 15-20 mins extra to boil water warning, they came out half raw... They also ran out of low-cal syrup, not surprising with the number of retirees in AZ, but also something a cafe should have plenty of serving breakfast and an older population that often needs to watch the sugar for health. Coffee is salty tasting, likely a result of water conditioning needed in the desert to make it softer. Wrong time of day to try pie for the rest of the family but Mtn Quail just alright food if passing.

Yelp
Came here for breakfast. Great spot in Quartzite for a meal. Place was awesome. Had the chili cheese burger and fries and it was solid. Refried potatoes were the best thing we tried. Customer service was on point. Definitely would recommend checking it out.
google avatar

Kathleen C.

Yelp
Makayla gave awesome service, so friendly and efficient. We want her to sell her banana bread and bagels ;) Breakfast was good and seasoned perfectly. A little outdated in style and glass could be better cleaned but If we drive through quartzite we will stop by again.
google avatar

Karen W.

Yelp
Super fast, friendly service. Food portions were huge and tasted great. It needs a little tidying up, in my opinion. There was a lot of wear that was visible. Other than that, a super experience. We will definitely eat here again when we are passing through Quartsite.
google avatar

Yelp
Food is delicious hot like home made service 10 at a10 the ambience is so confi we definitely go again in our next trip

Yelp
Stopped here with my mom while visiting the Gem Stores at Quartzite. It's good home cooked food with friendly staff and family style seating. The menu had a wide variety, from healthy light eating to delicious onion rings. Stop by, put your name on the list, and quickly get seated. The place was packed with some guests waiting ahead of us outside. With 4 names before us on the list we only waited 7-9 minutes before we were seated.
google avatar

Cinthya R.

Yelp
Stopped here as we were making our way to Sedona, and the food was great, Service was also great, very family oriented place.

Yelp
Driving through and decided to stop at Quartzsite for some fuel and food. Found this local gem on Yelp and was not disappointed. Just your traditional diner hanging out in the dessert, rocking a quail theme. Local artists display their pieces around the restaurant and in the gift shop. If you want to purchase any of them bring cash. The restaurant itself takes cards. We had a mix of breakfast and lunch with a chocolate milkshake to top it off. Highly recommend the sweet potato fries. We'll be back the next time we drive through.

Sarah B.

Yelp
Great service and food. Cute decorations and art for sale. Met an interesting man who shared our table.
google avatar

Angeline J.

Yelp
This is the best down home restaurant I've been to in a long while. Everything on the menu is available anytime they are open. Meaning you can have breakfast for dinner, If you still care too. Service is quick, friendly and the food is high-quality. I hear tell that the Friday night cod feed is to die for! I'll let you know I'm going next Friday.!! Psst: breakfast bacon to die for

Yelp
Comfortable cafe with great service, good food, and hot coffee-- great spot to stop when I'm driving through. Hash-browns we're especially delicious!

Pam W.

Yelp
We were passing through Quartzite about lunch and didn't want fast food. This is a low key diner style restaurant. I felt like most of the other customers were locals. They have an extensive menu. We had a burger, a chicken salad sandwich and a small chef's salad. All were hearty proportions. This is not a destination restaurant but it served our need while we were in the area.
google avatar

Carol B.

Yelp
Great restaurant. Friendly staff, very good food. I had a tuna melt, my husband a cheeseburger. Both were good. The French fries were really good. Nice ambiance. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Joe M.

Yelp
We decided to go back to this restaurant today for a late morning breakfast. When I looked at the "Daily Specials " board, when walking in, they had eggs Benedict which is one of my breakfast favorites. When our waitress asked for our order, I said the eggs Benedict was my choice. She said it pot roast eggs Benedict. I frowned since I had my sights on regular eggs Benedict but decided to try the pot roast eggs Benedict and wow was it outstanding. If you're ever here in Quartzsite, AZ and the Mountain Quail Cafe has the Pot Roast Eggs Benedict on special you surely should give it a try. If you're here and looking for a good meal you won't go wrong by stopping here.
google avatar

P R.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch while passing through - great service and good food. We had the turkey club and French dip - both were good; the French dip could have used a little more meat, but it tasted good.
google avatar

J A.

Yelp
Excellent little diner! It's just a few blocks off the freeway and far better than stopping at a chain restaurant. The waitress was extremely friendly and helpful, we felt very welcomed. The food was very fresh and delicious! As time goes on there are far less non chain places to get a great meal at on a road trip so it's worth the effort to stop by. 100% will return next time we are driving the 10 fwy.
google avatar

Mark A.

Yelp
Nice booths, pleasant service, very good breakfast. I had ham steak and eggs. And there are a couple of booths near outlets to charge your phone!
google avatar

Yelp
What a great find! Good service, locals, fun place with nice local art and history and great food. So glad we stopped!
