Mouton’s Bistro & Bar - Review - Cedar Park - Austin - The Infatuation

"Gumbo, jambalaya, etoufée, and po’boys are all present and accounted for at Mouton’s Bistro & Bar, Cedar Park’s nod to the Cajun and Creole flavors found on the other side of the Texas-Louisiana border. Mouton’s roadside-saloon vibes fit well with the buzzy energy and bold dishes, and if you visit during weekend brunch, you’ll discover another element that makes Mouton’s NOLA-coded: a live brass band playing jazz standards like you’d hear on the streets of the French Quarter. Tapping your foot along to the tunes while digging into a plate of boudin egg rolls, grits and eggs with Creole gravy, or pain perdu is a great way to start a Sunday. The local crowds that fill up Mouton’s dining room every weekend clearly agree. photo credit: Richard Casteel photo credit: Richard Casteel photo credit: Richard Casteel photo credit: Richard Casteel Pause Unmute" - Taylor Tobin

The Philly omelet and potatoes are delicious. With just the right amount spice for a kick. The covered and smothered with hash browns packed with flavor as well. Their gravy is great I'd recommend smothering the omelet or as a side for dipping :) Very friendly atmosphere

Google
The food was great and our waitress was so kind and she checked on us the perfect amount. I ordered the eggs Benedict with substitutions: sourdough toast instead of English muffin and sausage patties instead of ham steaks. It was wonderful! I will definitely be going back to try more dishes!

Google
Went due to reviews and craving eggs benedict and country fried steak. In looking at the photos from other reviewers, our eggs benedict was small in comparison. We hardly got any hashbrowns and the egg on top was round, not flat. The country fried steak was not seasoned well and the gravy was very bland. We also waited 40 mins for our breakfast. Reading this wait time from other reviewers, I wonder if they understand how to run a kitchen in the restaurant? Or is this just better as a straight up bar? The service was fine, everyone was friendly but unfortunately we will not be returning. If you want good breakfast, just go to the good ole reliable 1431 Cafe.

Google
Food was good, kudos to chef for serving the cajun pasta in an authentic manner, as it stands service was slow for a slow afternoon, didn’t even consider happy hour although the order was taken past the start time. Overall try out for good food experience

Google
Great little place. Service was excellent. Drinks were awesome. Ordered 3 different appetizers which all were amazing. The main entrees were plentiful, and looked amazing. We just felt that all the main dishes were too spicey and we all like a little kick. We understand that it's Cajun and Cajun has generally a kick to it but it really could have been kicked down a notch. Other than that it's a cool place and definitely worth a visit.

Google
Went a couple of weeks ago, the first time visiting this location since the Leander one closed down. Got to sit near a live band performing wonderful jazz music, and yet I could still hold a conversation with my family without shouting or yelling to be heard. The food was delicious and the service was fantastic.

Google
Do not leave without an order of shrimp and grits! It’s loaded with flavors that are well balanced. Eggs on top for breakfast. Chefs kiss.

Google
We went there today and it sadly it was not the Mouton’s we are used to. My sons jambalaya was not made with rice and had a very different taste. I had the Angry Pasta. It was served in a bowl- almost like a stew? The meat was missing in action and again the flavor was leas then. Our fried pickles had some weird sweet breading and the dipping sauce was horrible. The good part is the helpings a large, but then again if it does not taste very good having more is not all that great. All for $86.00 for three of us.

Yelp
I like the Reuben sandwich and draft beers. The breakfast is nice as well, and I'd much rather stop in here than ihop. Sunday Jazz brunch is great.

Jackie R.

Yelp
Per review below: I love moutons and Im a regular. I was here tonight and the food was great, the restaurant was clean, and the service was phenomenal. As always. Unfortunately I overheard the conversation happening behind me. Brailee and Abbi did everything they could to fix the situation as they were upset about everything, and comped the entire bill for them. Ive seen them here before and theyre always upset and they always complain about something. I've had the chicken fried steak multiple times and it's delicious.

Yelp
We were excited to try this place as we were missing some Cajun food from our time down south. We decided to come for brunch and arrived and seated at 10:30A and at the time of this writing it is 11:36A. We are still waiting for our food which is not a big lift. Pretty much French toast and a breakfast plate. There are definitely people here at the restaurant but it isn't a line out the door. How it takes over one hour is absolutely atrocious. Bacon, sausage, ham and eggs really shouldn't take that long. At least not an hour. Definitely no excuse to this. And a server just told me 5 more minutes. We shall see. Stay away if you don't want to waste your whole day. Especially for the price of what they are charging, this better be the best eggs we've ever had. Customers are now ready to walk This place is a disaster right now. I can't even imagine a busy lunch service with much more complex dishes. Get it together or this restaurant will be in trouble. A 4 star overall rating is definitely deceiving. 1-2 stars at best.

Yelp
The fried green tomatoes were great start with we graduate to shrimp and grits and gator pork boys with catfish and fries is a great place to stop if you want some authentic Cajun food . just make sure you have some shrimp and grits.

Yelp
We made plans to meet at Mouton's mighty pelicans were playing one of my favorite Cajun bands. The guys are fabulous. We were seated without everyone having to be there. We ordered off of the happy hour starter menu five dollars off each appetizer love that I did not have a cocktails, but I think they had a cocktail special as well. Waiter was OK. Food was not the best this time always a fun atmosphere. Price was right. Thank you again Mouton's.

Yelp
Fried shrimp and red beans & rice - spicy and delicious! Atmosphere is very casual - location is a bit out of the way in Cedar Park. Pay careful attention to your GPS!

Yelp
A very chill spot, a friend and I chose Mouton's as a vent sesh spot, their outdoor seating area was perfect! The waitress was attentive and did not make us feel rushed, and consistently made sure everything was perfect. The food was delicious, and the portions were huge! Will definitely be back again

Yelp
This place has a real homey feel to it serving plenty options for carnivores and vegetarians. We ordered the shrimp and grits 3/5 and the French toast with a fried egg. 5/5 Shrimp and grits was okay once the hot sauce was added but by itself the grits were bland and shrimp seemed to be boiled which was weird and I didn't enjoy. I opted to bring it home and throw the shrimp in a skillet for a good seer. Wouldn't order again. The French toast was great , perfect texture and flavor, the bread they used worked really well. The table we were at had some jelly on it from the prior customer which was a tad disturbing , unclear if it was missed as it was hard to see with the Wooden table top or if the table just wasn't cleaned at all. Our waitress was knowledgeable and friendly. I would come back if I'm the area.

Yelp
This was my first experience here, and I had heard good things. First, the service wasn't great. Not many options for anyone avoiding wheat, and almost none for garlic and onion intolerances. I decided to just go for it, and ordered a favorite dish, the crawfish étouffée. It wasn't very good, definitely not worth the stomach ache I got for eating it. The spicing was rather bland, with the bitterness of green pepper dominating everything else.

Devesh S.

Yelp
We love Cajun food and there aren't too many Cajun joints around. Once we found Mouton's, it has become our go to place for Cajun food. The beer is nice too.
google avatar

Chris P N.

Yelp
As the website says "Southern-Inspired Comfort Food in Cedar Park, TX". Some of the tastiest, hand-picked ingredients are combined into some very interesting dishes. I've always considered it kind of Cajun-inspired Texas Roadhouse cuisine. They have a number of delicious choices you see on their menu on the website. I highly recommend Mouton's!

Yelp
Had been wanting to try Mouton since seeing they have chicken fried steak but the drive was a bit far from home. Finally made it to meet with a friend in that area. We did come on Labor Day, possibly the reason for the slow service. We didn't get our food until 45 minutes after ordering. The servers were nice, likely just short staff for the holiday. I did enjoy the food. The Gumbo was flavorful. I'm not a gumbo expert but it was good for me. The chicken fried steak didn't disappoint. Good size portion, had to take most of it home after finishing the gumbo. I will come back to try the étouffé and maybe other items!

Yelp
Love this new location! The same great food and people but a way better space! The Philly cheesesteak is my favorite of anywhere in town and they have a delicious chicken pasta.
google avatar

John H.

Yelp
Excellent food and service today! Will certainly return again. 10/10 recommend!! Get the catfish!
google avatar

Brooke D.

Yelp
Came here for dinner the other night when I was cracking Cajun food and really enjoyed my meal. I ordered the catfish basket and the catfish was cooked perfect and the fries were great as well. I really like the tartar sauce they served with it and I ended up asking for some lemon wedges to squeeze on the fish. My boyfriend got the chicken fried steak and didn't end up liking it as much as he'd hoped. I tried it and it was a little sweet almost like meatloaf which I thought was weird. The jalapeño creamed corn was good tho! When we came they had family feud style trivia going which was very entertaining to listen to lol. Over all, nice restaurant with good seating and great service. I will definitely be back!

Yelp
I'm working my way down Lakeline trying all the food establishments. Mouton was one of the first. Burger was pretty good, and I had jambalaya for appetizer and it was really good. Service was friendly, attentive and competent. One lady handled the entire lunch hour herself, hostess, serving all tables, even the bar. It was fascinating to watch. Ambience was comfortable. I'll be coming back.

Yelp
We are long time fans of Moutons, both Leander (when it was open) and Cedar Park. The boudin balls are our favorite. The food has always been incredible. The food tonight was superb as always. We had the Boudin Balls, Cajun pasta and catfish basket. The catfish was perfection. The service the past three times we have come has been atrocious. Waiting after sitting 20 min to have someone acknowledge us. Having our meal arrive before appetizer, with zero drinks. Going an entire meal with no check ins and empty glasses. Because we know things are challenging in staffing services we keep giving the benefit, it's just been increasingly worse. Tonight was the worst. Our waiter was super attentive to the table beside us. We understand their party was more than two. However we tried and failed to get the attention of the server three times. I had to raise my voice to get his attention. It was embarrassing to work so hard to get the attention. He was not the only server, the section had another server as well. Folks delivering food and even the manager. The kitchen was running slow so there were other things going on. I do think it's reasonable to expect our waiter do more than take our order and deliver the check. I also think any of the other four people circulating could have supported our waiter if he was behind. In the off chance he was having a bad night we tipped well to be kind. I do think it will be awhile before we try again.
google avatar

Larry T.

Yelp
First time here. Food was awesome, fresh and portions huge. The only negative was the long wait to receive order.
google avatar

Heather B.

Yelp
The food and service here are outstanding! Our server was friendly and very helpful in determining what I wanted to try. My shrimp poboy had great toasted bread with spicy mayo and crunchy shrimp.  There was so much shrimp that they couldn't stay on the sandwich! The fries were very tasty, too. My friend's chicken fried steak took over his plate! He said it is one of the best he's ever had. The gravy was just thick enough.
google avatar

Amy W.

Yelp
Mixed review here. We went for lunch - good lunch special menu. They were terribly understaffed but our server was working hard and very nice so we didn't mind the wait. Food was very good. Now for the bad. We were seated in the side room away from the bar, and it was grossly dirty. They have hanging lights and ceiling fans with visible caked on dirt - so this is a long term issue. It was so nasty that it made it hard for me to be comfortable with the food. The food is great, but management has to address the staffing issue and sanitation before we would go back.

Yelp
My wife and I are in town for the month working and this little place was just around the corner. Tried it out and was more than completely satisfied. Food was excellent and the beer was cold. Service was outstanding! Not busy mid-afternoon when we arrived and was warmly greeted by the bartender and a few locals sitting at the bar. We chose to sit on the nice patio. Don't mistake this as some neighborhood bar with typical bar fare. They have a great selection on their menu that is sure to please. We will make this our go to place while we are here. Good Cajun style cuisine.
google avatar

Lakisha D.

Yelp
I absolutely loved this little place! From the time you walk in, you are greeted. All of the staff was very pleasant and attentive. My friends and I sat at the bar and from what I was told, the young lady behind the bar ( most of the staff told me their names but I'm terrible with remembering names ) was in training but I definitely could not tell!! She was on point! Drinks were amazing and she was also taking food orders and even caught one of our dishes had been made improperly BEFORE it even came out of the kitchen. She had it corrected and came to inform us instead of allowing us to believe the food was just taking that long. Like I said, on point! The food was delicious though. Everything we had came out hot and full of flavor. There were also quite a few regular customers including a friend of mine, which says alot about a place! I'll definitely be visiting often myself as it's a nice cozy spot with great drinks, great food and great service.

Yelp
Food: Not awesome, but it's not terrible. The coffee was ok. The eggs lacked flufiness (I bet they didn't follow meal prep to that), the flavor was on point, and they did just the right amount of spinach and bacon. The bread is good but poorly heat it. It was dry (which it means) they didn't use butter and the food didn't come out very hot. Service: Poor. The server wasn't very good on manners on how to talk to people. It felt like we were just welcome at first. Later, he did a little bit better, ensuring there was always water and coffee. I think etiquette manners will make it better. Price: they served a good quantity. Economically, it's cheaper than anything around. Ambiance: It was a combination of bar and coffee. I will stop here if I'm in a little bit of a rush or my budget is limited. It is NOT good for a date, a coffee with a business partner, and a family.

Yelp
My first time at Mouton's Bistro. The food was so good very tasty. The server was so nice she got our food out so fast. It was good vibes in the restaurant they were playing music which I like. When I visit Cedar Park again I will be back. Catfish Jambalaya Blackened catfish filet on a half order of chicken and sausage jambalaya topped with a cup of étouffée. Served with garlic bread Chicken & Sausage Jambalaya Creole seasoned tomatoes, chicken, Smoked sausage, and white rice.
google avatar

Bradley W.

Yelp
Well, the food was good. Not great. A bit dry, especially jambalaya. Service was less than stellar. Waiter kept making excuses. 90 minutes for two of us.
google avatar

Karin C.

Yelp
Want a great place to hang at the bar for great drinks and even better food? Head over to Mouton's Cedar Park. Every time is a fun time. Abigail is one of the most attentive bartenders around! I set my shrimp and grits standards to Moutons and no one comes close!! So, all around, Moutons is worth trying out.

Jerry G.

Yelp
Food is great except for green beans. They are so under cooked that they are tough. They could take lessons from the Texas Roadhouse and Smokey Mos who know how to do green beans.
google avatar

Vickie G.

Yelp
I had such a lovely experience last Sunday that I had to post. The staff always makes me feel so welcome, but the star of this visit was the Eggs Benedict. Perfectly toasted english muffin, poached eggs that flowed like tasty yellow lava when you cut into them, and super lemony Hollandaise sauce. Crispy hashbrowns topped it off to make my morning. I liked it so much I had to ask who made it. Thanks you for making my Sunday delicious, Alysha!
google avatar

Brandon S.

Yelp
Delicious food, fantastic service and a comfortable homey (not the clown) atmosphere. My wife and I have been coming to Mouton's for years. First the Leander location (RIP, we'll miss you Leander Mouton's ) and now the Cedar Park location. My wife absolutely LOVES the corn beef hash. I love a lot of things here. The country fried potatoes and Pain Perdu (French toast) are particularly delicious, so I definitely recommend those! Autumn was our server last time we were in and the service was magnificent. Eggfficient and on point. I love the fun and unique coffee cups! Again, very homey (not the clown). They even have a pool table and some dart boards if you come with friends and are looking for a group activity outside of shoving yummy foods in your face.
google avatar

Jennifer C.

Yelp
Went there for the Chicken Fried Steak as a to-go order. The Chicken Fried Steak was perfect as well as the gravy and the green beans. The mashed potatoes were good but there wasn't enough. I would go there again for the food but the service was a little lax. My food was sitting on the hostess stand for quite a while before I noticed it and I was sitting right across. I checked the name on the tag to make sure it was mine and left. I guess I should have tipped more to make sure I got my food handed to me. A man who looked like the manager/owner had his back to the hostess stand and talking to someone else or I would have brought it to his attention. To the owners, you should really make sure to have your restaurant fully staffed.
google avatar

Neeharika P.

Yelp
Great New Orleans spot in Cedar Park. We went for brunch and they had a New Orleans jazz band performing live. The music was definitely a little loud for the space, to the extent that it was a little difficult to hear people. However, the brunch items were tasty and well-priced. Pain Perdu (french toast) was a standout dish and, although not New Orleans flavors, the Lakeline taco was great too. I found the Texas Philly omelette a little underspiced. All in all, a hidden gem in Cedar Park especially if you are craving for a taste of New Orleans!
google avatar

Felicia L.

Yelp
This place is a little gem, you wouldn't think they have good food based on when you walk in and it looks like a bar! We did breakfast randomly here and it was good! My only issues are the service was slow and our food took over 25 minutes. Now normally it doesn't bother us but there were only three other people in the whole joint so that was a little annoying. The biscuits and gravy were hands down the best out of our whole meal. Overall it's good and I would try lunch or dinner.

Cilla M.

Yelp
Been going to moutons since they were in a little mobile home off 183 and its safe to say that even though they upgraded their building, the service and quality of food is still incredible!! We had chicken fried steak, fried catfish and étouffée which were all incredible! Our server today was Izzy and she was also amazing. Some of the best service we have received in a while. We will definitely be returning again soon!

Vangie H.

Yelp
My food is fresh and always hot. Our server Abigail is always on point and makes me feel welcome. We also have met several regulars, that's have the same opinion of Mouton's. Great place in cedar park!

janie p.

Yelp
Mojito and margarita were great. The fried pickles and spinach dip were delicious. The Cajun Collette pasta was amazing. Service was attentive.
google avatar

Maryjane S.

Yelp
This is the 2nd time my daughter-in-law & I have been here. This time, we both ordered the Smoked Meatloaf, mashed potatoes with brown gravy & fresh green beans. The Smoked Meatloaf was really good, and the green beans were really fresh and still had some snap to them. Our server was very attentive and friendly. She kept checking back with us to see if we needed anything else. It was dinner time and was very loud in the restaurant because there is a bar and there were a lot of customers dining in. The 1st time we dined there, it was lunchtime, and it was not loud at all. The food was good both times, and we will definitely consider eating here again when we are in the area.
google avatar

Stephen S.

Yelp
We recently tried Mouton's for the first time and it was ok. We got takeout so didn't have much interaction with the staff but when we picked it up, the server at the front was very friendly and helpful. I also saw there was live music in the back so I might come back just for the ambiance. Overall the food was 3.5/5 for us. We both got pastas and neither were amazing. I'm not sure if it was because it was takeout or if we ordered the wrong thing because all the other reviews sound great for this place. We will have to give it another time and go for something besides pasta.
google avatar

Ben M.

Yelp
Sat, ordered our food, waited 45min, then came and told us it'd be another hour because they ran out of crawfish. No comps, no trying to work it out, just sorry you're SOL and gonna have to wait another hour to eat. Shit happens, it's how you handle it that matters. Lots of places do offer crawfish and they just lost regular customers because of it. Do better!
google avatar

Brittany D.

Yelp
In from out of town, got a sitter to head out for dinner with family. Our server forgot to enter our order, which coming from the service industry I understand can happen, but after an hour and 15 min they said "yeah it'll still be a while, sorry". A manager came over and said sorry it'll be right out, and I said are you sure bc the server just said a while. Sure enough, she goes back and it will be awhile. They didn't make us pay for our drinks, but we left with one to go order and the other two of us having not eaten and almost zero accommodations or accountability made.. We made a specific choice to dine here and support the restaurant and felt very let down. 1hr and 15 min was a LOT of time to not notice and tell us food is on it way multiple times. Super disappointed to leave without dinner after an hour and a half in total and having paid for a sitter for a night out.

Bella M.

Yelp
Caroline was awesome!!! The food was amazing and she was so nice and helpful!. Love the atmosphere as well!

Mequela L.

Yelp
One of the best places for brunch after a great workout! The staff is and will make sure you are taken care of.. Abigail at the bar is tip notch. Makes the best drinks

Yelp
Decent Cajun food in Cedar Park. Service was good and the food was decent. I think I could have ordered better so that's on me. The fish tacos I ordered were pretty basic but the chicken fried steak looked really good. Will be ordering that the next time I stop by. Having an out door seating area is a nice plus but be warned there were a lot of flies.

Adele L.

Yelp
The food was excellent, the service friendly. I recommend this place and wil be back.
google avatar

Clarissa G.

Yelp
I was pretty excited to try out a Cajun/Texas restaurant but unfortunately the food did not meet expectations. I got a shrimp po boy which was on very basic bread, very little sauce and poorly put together. The shrimp inside by itself was flavorful and ended up just eating that opposed to the whole sandwich. Fries were great too, very flavorful. My wife got a chicken jambalaya which was extremely dry. There was no type of sauce given w it. The service was OK. Our waiter seemed in a rush the whole time and didn't check up on us not once. Ambience was fine, it was quiet and not packed when we went but we asked to be seated away from the bar and that side of the restaurant was very stuffy (left side); we communicated our disappointments to the bartender/waitress and she was very understanding! And ended up taking off the soup from our tab. I really wish I would of gotten her name but we did appreciate her for listening and understanding and not making us feel weird for our experience.

Yelp
We recently came here for brunch and was not impressed. We were sat down immediately but our server was barely at our table. They weren't very busy but it did seem like they were short staffed. No one came over to tell us but it seemed like the kitchen was also short staffed. Took an hour to get our food and no one came over at all during that time to explain, we just sat there waiting. Only got one drink refill the entire hour and a half we were there. Assuming the kitchen was short staffed it was really frustrating that they weren't handling tickets in order of when they replaced but rather what was easiest as two two tops were served we'll before us that arrived much later than us. All we had was a burrito and a bunch of waffles. I know the bad experience kind of gave a bias but the burrito was not that great. The gravy was thick and floury and the inside of the burrito was bland. The waffles were okay but at the price they were it was not a good value. We might try again but it might not be for a while.

Patrick R.

Yelp
This place is one of my go to restaurants in cedar park. Foods always phenomenal and it's a family owned small business. The food is always on point. My favorites by far are the crawfish Monica, catfish jambalaya, boudin egg rolls and the shrimp Diablo are the best I've ever eaten. It isn't super fancy and sometimes they get busy and food can take a bit longer to come out but that's a rare occurrence only due to the staff being slammed. Autumn, Alisha, Summer, Abby always provide great service with an excellent attitude. Give it a shot and try one of the dishes I recommended, you won't be disappointed!

Benjamin C.

Yelp
I'm giving Moutons in Cedar Park one star because I can't give it zero. after coming to their restaurants here and in Leander for years, I just walked out after returning a chicken fried steak to the kitchen. the meat was rancid. there's no way you could have cooked this without knowing. extremely disappointed. hope that the health department reads this.

Yelp
Had been wanting to try this place for a while so finally stopped in on an off day. Great service, great recommendations from employee. They have happy hour all day on weekdays with $1 off bar drinks and $5 off of appetizers. Unfortunately food just did not do it for me. The boudin balls were super mushy and the angry pasta sauce was a bit bland. I was super disappointed because I had spoke with the server about many different options as well as looking up some options but just wasn't impressed.

Christina E.

Yelp
first things first, the food was okay at best. the service however was terrible, between the two of us we got chicken fried steak & eggs and a chicken bacon biscuit bowl. we got there at 1:00 and got our food at 2:15 which is absolutely ridiculous. also, once we got there it took AT LEAST 5 mins to get seated with zero wait. yall aren't gonna last like this. we won't be coming back.
