Gov. Brown Worked With Business Owners When Developing Reopening Plans - Eater Portland

"Mox Boarding House, a Washington game bar and restaurant mini-chain, has finally opened its Oregon location, serving food and beer onsite for those interested in playing one of the restaurant’s many board games. Now, for those who feel uncomfortable playing a rented game right now, the restaurant does sell new games that customers can take home; those unready to eat inside a restaurant can buy a game and order takeout from a menu of sandwiches, fried chicken, and coffee drinks." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

A wonderful experience! I got the mojo grilled chicken and blackberry mead since I wasn’t feeling too well and both were easy on my stomach while also being delightfully delicious! The mead was very sweet and great to drink, and the chicken sandwich was filling! My friends really enjoyed the gluten free and vegan options here, and most of the menu can be made gluten free, which is great! The menu is really inclusive if you have dietary restrictions which is pretty great. But the best part was being able to rent a board game to play with friends at the restaurant, it was super fun to have a few drinks and enjoy time with friends! I can’t wait to go back!

Google
I'm visiting from NY and met there for a drink and game trial. So beautiful, interesting and unique. The drink I had was ridiculously delicious. I must go back for more and to shop for games. Makes for a great date night outing.

Google
What a cool place! This spot is awesome for gaming and food. Huge space for several people to have a good time. The selection of games is great and the staff was friendly and accommodating the entire time. I’d love to come back when I’m in Portland again!

Google
Very nice game store with a fancy vibe. Lots of selection of board games. A restaurant with average prices. But good food and you can play board games while you eat, you can borrow the games for free from their library. My only real complaint was that it got really warm in there while we were eating and playing games, but it was a really hot day and there were a lot of people.

Google
Love Mox Boarding House! Friendly and helpful staff, inviting environment that includes plenty of table space to play and even food that can be ordered right to your table! The massive selection of games and accessories in a very Portland atmosphere makes this a place I'd like to visit often!

Google
Really impressive, they have a stunning selection of boardgames, RPG books, minis, and cardboard. The decor is super elevated and the whole place just feels like being in one of those old timey upper class clubs. The restaurant was great, we enjoyed some good drinks and delicious loaded steak fries. The tiramisu was kind of meh and we wish we'd gotten the brownie or something. The bathrooms are super nice, very private and clean. The clientele is pretty broad and it seems like this is a great place for tabletop gamers of all ages and backgrounds.

Google
Great board game store with a wonderful selection and tables to use for miniatures, DnD or renting a game to try. The staff are very knowledgeable and friendly willing to help you find a game that fits your needs. There is also an attached bar as well in case all that gaming gets you in the mood for a snack 👍

This place is consistently a 5 star experience. Sean was awesome! Above and beyond with his service and his personality. I'm definitely gonna be stopping by regularly and recommend it to everyone I know in the area!

Yelp
What a cool spot! Perfect for a rainy day. Lots of games to browse and also checkout to play. Staff were all very kind and friendly. Fanciest and clean bathrooms. Full bar and food menu, plenty of seating. No complaints here, really loved this experience. Thanks Mox!

Yelp
4.5 stars because food can always be better even when it is really good! So this place is an awesome concept that I hadn't seen in the past - it is a restaurant where you can eat and drink while you play board games, and also a board game store! Located in downtown Portland, parking can be an issue, but this restaurant/store is pretty spacy and chic! You enter through their board game store. You can choose one board game at a time and if you don't know how to play a game, the people there will help you. While you could just come here to eat and drink, I highly recommend playing a board game to fully experience this place. Once you have chosen your board game, you head over to the restaurant area. You have servers who will help out but ordering food and drinks is done via their online website. You can keep a tab open for as long as you are there. They have themed rooms that you can reserve for a bigger group. Our group of 5 got there around 8 pm so we spent 2 hours until closing time. We could've spent much longer if we were given the time. For food, we chose the vegan chorizo and the regular chorizo tacos, the Mac and cheese, the goat cheese dip, the chicken salad, and fries. The vegan chorizo taco was better than the real chorizo taco. The goat cheese dip was excellent. The fries were a huge hit in our group also. The salad and the Mac and cheese were pretty decent. I also got a Moscow mule, which was decent. Our server was awesome! He was really helpful throughout and especially when I knocked my drink down. Now this place is pricey. We paid around $150 for the food and drinks. I will definitely be back to enjoy this unique experience though!

Yelp
We swung through Mox recently for a drink and a game. There is a huge selection of games that can be played, and even more that are available for purchase! Super nice guy helped us at the counter, and our waiter was amazing as well. We played Azul Summer Pavilion and drank mead :) a wonderful happy hour! It does seem like Mox might be undergoing a renovation of some sort as the finishes didn't seem quite finished. But it was still good ambience!

Yelp
What an amazing place! Go there with friends or make new friends as you sip or eat while playing a large collection of board games. One gets discounted board game prices if they eat there. A nice chill out lounge basically open for long hours.

Yelp
Stopped by after the Timbers game to get some food with some friends. For a group of 8, we were seated super quickly! The ambiance of this place is nice, the fun lighting, cozy vibes, and board games are definitely a plus to this place. I ordered the tavern Mac and cheese and it was okay. Not great, not bad, just okay. I would probably order it again. For drinks, I had one of their signature cocktails, the Persephone. It was tart pomegranate and lemon-y, and pretty good. The service was also pretty good. Our waiter was so nice and helpful and checked in multiple times. Overall this was a fun spot to end the night at. While I wasn't obsessed with the food, the drinks were pretty good and we had a blast playing games while eating and sipping away!

Yelp
I'd been wanting to go to Mox forever. And it did not disappoint. My wife and I went for a date night and ordered a bunch of food. (Which was all very reasonably priced.) She got the Falafel Pita and I got the Tavern Mac and Cheese (using the gluten free option) and a "Secret Side of Fries" that 100% wasn't on the menu. The food was all good, but... those fries, man. THOSE. FRIES. I could eat nothing but a bucket of those fries all day. They were just the right level of crisp, had an awesome salt/seasoning situation, and paired really well with their house made ranch. On top of having ridiculously knowledgeable and fun staff, The Mox Boarding House Portland has one of my favorite atmospheres (is that an adjective?) of just about restaurant that I've been to. Imagine playing board games in a really upscale home that's actually a wizard's castle and you're just lucky enough to hole up in his study with a bunch of strangers (at communal table) that could easily become fast friends for the evening. AND you totally can! You can check out board games for free to play at your table while you eat/drink/whatever, and if you dine there and like the game you borrowed, you can get a 15% off coupon towards the purchase of a new copy of that game. Which we totally utilized. ("The Night Cage" was an awesome 2-5 player co-op board game, btw. Check it out.) Honestly, I can't say enough nice things about Mox, and I can't wait to go back. Five stars.

Yelp
This place is really cool. They have a huge board game selection to purchase from and a pretty extensive library of games to check out and play. Staff are all knowledgeable on board games and very willing to help. We checked out a game we wanted to try and headed to the restaurant they have in the back. They have a decent menu of different containing a diverse fare. We ordered a couple of different things to try and weren't blown away. The best thing was the fries, and to me they were just ok. The spam fried rice was ok as well, and so were the chicken strips. I don't know what I was expecting, but the food didn't meet my expectations. The most disappointing part was the ranch. It was pretty watery and didn't have much flavor. All that being said, this place is really fun if you're a board game enthusiast like myself, and you don't have to order food! I will say the burgers looked pretty good, and I might try one next time.

Yelp
I have been really looking forward to coming here for a while. The ambiance is great & I love the decor. But man oh man the food was such a disappointment. None of the food was seasoned well. Mac n cheese was cold. Burger was bad. Our server also totally forgot about us. They need to seriously step up their food and service game if they want to stay in business. Next time I'd go just for games and drinks but no food.

Yelp
Well, it's hard to give a full review of this spot. It was our first time at this location. I had been at the Seattle location several years ago and I can barely remember the experience for comparison. As a store, it's certainly upscaled due to the decor and gigantic play area. It wasn't too busy while we were there, and that was nice because we had our pick of tables that day. However, we were really curious about the restaurant too. Unfortunately, their water heater broke down and there was no food service until further notice. We had fun regardless. Good thing we ate something before stopping by.

Yelp
Tap [keg]: Add 1 IPA to your Pint Glass. Activate only as long as you have money in your bank account, and only if you are not [Wasted]. I've been playing Magic: the Gathering since Alpha back in 1993, so you'd think I would have heard that Mox Boarding House had opened up shop in Portland by now, as they have apparently been here for two years. I guess I missed the memo. I remember the days when the only drafting happening in the CCG world involved opening packs of cards; now, the drafting happens behind the bar as well! More than just a bar, Mox is a fantastically stocked board and card gaming store, tournament/event venue, AND a full-fledged restaurant serving surprisingly delicious food at competitive prices, in an elegant renovated space that used to be a dollar store, although you would never be able to tell. Dark hardwood tables, chandeliers, ambient light from paneled windows...the vibe in this collectible card game cathedral rivals, even outclasses a significant percentage of upscale restaurants in the (Mox) Pearl District. Same can be said of the food and cocktails. Although we only ordered a drink a piece (Ruby Soho and Mini Love), plus the Coconut Tres Leches cake and the Mediterranean cauliflower appetizer, everything we tried was incredible, with potent, complex flavors, cunningly conceptualized and crafted, and sizably portioned for the price. I wouldn't hesitate to come here for the food and drinks alone, even if that were all that Mox had to offer! But it's not! Check out any board game from their lending library, and challenge your companions to a match while waiting for your food to arrive (or while eating...they won't stop you)! Eavesdrop on one of the many tournaments taking place around you; there's nothing better than offering commentary or strategy tips with a mouthful of cake! And when you're finished, purchase a new game, figurine, paints, or dice from the shop before Planeswalking back home. My only gripe is that the dishes should be renamed to be thematically appropriate to the gamer aesthetic. Why isn't the Hot Honey chicken sandwich called "The Cockatrice"?; why is there's no cocktail called the "Black Lotus?"; and not a single burger is named "The Stack"? C'MON! Time to take a Mulligan on the menu. Like opening a chase rare in a booster pack, stumbling into a local Mox Boarding House was a happy surprise: I'm glad Seattle is no longer keeping all of their locations to themselves! We are spoilt for choice when it comes to fantastic gaming stores in the PDX area, but the arrival of Mox presents the first real challenge to the crown worn previously by places such as Guardian Games and Red Castle; one might say it has become the Monarch. And while each has their own perks, drawbacks, and food/drink options, Mox Boarding House is unique in that it caters to a more sophisticated gamer: one who enjoys drinking a glass of wine while simultaneously drinking the tears of the opponent being trampled by an army of 15/15 squirrel tokens. Suck it, Emrakul!

Yelp
We waited about 30 mins on a Saturday night. Their policy is that you can stay and eat and play as long as you want so they couldn't give me an estimate when my table would be ready. There is a board game store part of the restaurant so we looked at boardgames while waiting. As we were seated, the waiter was a little bit rude to me since I ordered hot chocolate while everyone ordered alcohol. My friends joked around about it but I did feel a little uncomfortable. I ordered the Filipino asada. It was very sweet and I wish it came with bread or rice to compliment the overwhelming flavor I was tasting. I requested bread and I got charged $1 for two slices of small bread while the waiter was rude once again. They had a huge board game section and we ended up with wingspan. However, because it was getting late, we didn't finish our game. I paid in cash and was expecting about $16 in change back but the waitress who checked us out gave me $6 back. I had to wave her down to ask why I was missing $10. Turns out she forgot to give it to me... Maybe I would give this place another try if I'm in Portland again.

Yelp
This is the best board game cafe/restaurant I've ever been to. The interior is gorgeous. There a huge selection of categorized board games to tabletop card games. There's plenty of large tables for gaming. You order on Toast tab for food and drinks. There's coffees to bar cocktails. There's a good menu that are a pretty good portions. The Brussels could have been better. The first are nice and crispy. The peach cobbler thing was small and overly sweet. The berries cake thing was large portioned and good. Highly recommend this place for anyone who likes games!

Yelp
When family and friends come visit me in Portland, Mox Boarding House is usually on our itinerary. It's a beautiful and unique place to enjoy some beer while playing with board games. If this doesn't scream Portland, I don't know what does. I've been here multiple times, but I can talk about my latest visit in this review. I came in during a Timbers game and the place was packed! There was also some sort of board game tournament happening on the outskirts of the place. I got my group on the waitlist and they said they'll text me when our table is ready. WAIT TIMES VARY as they can't really assume when a table is going to be ready since each group is playing a different board game and can leave whenever they feel like going. Fortunately, there are a lot of things you can do while you wait.... 1.) Wander around and shop at the board game STORE. 2.) Ask the experts handing out the board games for their recommendation on which one to play. This is free, BTW! And the experts will give you a gist of how to play it. I love that you're able to try out a board game before committing to purchasing one. 3.) The BAR is OPEN SEATING, so grab an empty seat, and order your first round of drinks there. They've got a good selection of drinks as it is a full bar (wells, beer, wine, cider). You want it, they've got it. All in all, we probably waited about 20 minutes for a group of 5. I can't comment too much on the food as we only ordered appetizers. I loved their FRIES, but you have to make sure you ask for the AVOCADO RANCH. Sooo good and addicting! We loved it so much we ordered another side of fries. My most favorite thing about Mox is the ambience. Their bathroom gives me Chamber of Secret vibes. Pretty epic! The entire place also gives off a Great Gatsby mood (romantic, rich, and royal). I highly recommend this place!

Yelp
Mox Boarding House is a fun place to go with friends. Their food is vegan based I think, but it was savory and I enjoyed it. They have so many games to choose from, and overall, it was a wonderful dining experience. It is also family friendly, but they do offer tasty drinks. I am planning my next trip here.

Yelp
I'm so sorry to have to write this review because I absolutely love the ambience and idea of this restaurant. If you are going there to meet friends for a drink or meet up for mtg or d&d this place is amazing. I'm a HUGE gamer, I own over 100 board games and this place sells some of my favorites. I also love the bathrooms, the board game library, and how clean it is but the part that makes me give 2 stars is the food. The food is HORRIBLE!!!!! I've eaten here before and although it wasn't great it wasn't bad. Until the last time I went. I was so excited to introduce my new partner to the wonderful place that is Mox, I even wore my special flapper dress with adorable red Mary Jane's! He got the tavern Mac and cheese and I got chicken tenders and fries. The fries were normal frozen fries cooked in a deep fryer but the chicken tenders looked like they had been over cooked for hours! They were dry and hard. I can be picky but as I looked around the restaurant I noticed anyone who had chicken tenders had a full plate and they weren't touching them. My partner got the Mac and cheese and I took one bite and it was okay. He on the other hand, picked at his food, and he usually eats really fast. When I asked him what was wrong, he told me to try it again. I did, and that's when I tasted dish soap. It was so strong I thought I was going to puke. When the waiter came back I complained about the Mac and cheese but not the chicken tenders because I felt bad. They asked if we wanted something else, we said no and they cut it from the bill. I would have rather had good food and paid for it then get bad food free. When we left my partner said it was the worst food he had ever gotten in Portland and I had to agree. For such a nice place, the food is REALLY bad. One piece of advice for the chef, invest in a meat thermometer. Once the chicken is done, take it out of the oven, otherwise you end up with chicken jerky which can be good but not when you are ordering chicken tenders.

Yelp
Fun place to play games (for free) with your friends, and have a drink and eat. Don't put in much expectations for the food. The drinks are good. A large selection of board games to purchase and play. The staff is always super nice and knowledgeable.

Yelp
This place is a lot of fun. We came for my sisters bday and really enjoyed our time. I was honestly a bit confused when we walked in because it looks like you walk into a store and there's a bunch of tables to sit at and then a restaurant in the back. I think there was an event going on when we went because this place was packed. I wish there were signs or a better way to figure out where exactly to rent games and get some cocktails but we eventually figured it out. You go to the desk to borrow games and then the bar inside the restaurant is where we went to get our drinks. I really liked our drinks, they were all interesting and yummy and got the job done lol. They have lots of different games to choose from. Parking can be a bit difficult.
google avatar

Yelp
Board games, zero proof drinks, and fancy digs? Yes please! Love the concept and also the location. Perfect for folks from the Westside and Eastside who need a central meeting spot. They have a diverse menu of food and drinks which I appreciated. It does get pricy tho, so I might suggest getting an app elsewhere first if ya truly hungry. The games are the star here and you can spend all day playing games that they allow you to bring back to the table. They have 3 rooms that you can reserve (for a price), a room for events that they put on, and plenty of other tables for the rest of us.
google avatar

Paul K.

Yelp
Mox Boarding House, more like Mox Board game house! This spot is like a restaurant and a game store made a baby. The entrance and front room had a wonderful selection of board games and card games. There were plenty of tables for larger parties. I would check if there is a tournament because the wait time to find a table might take longer. I didn't eat any of the food, but I had some fries and they were a delicious snack for chatting while playing board games. Also, I ordered two drinks, monkey's uncle and a european lager (the czech one). The taste and texture were memorable. And it was a delightful addition to the ambiance. Great for larger parties as well as an intimate setting at night! Must check it out for a fun night out!

Yelp
Love this place and so glad I found it on Yelp (I just searched "chess" for a place to play and this place came up). Came in on a Wednesday at 6:45p and the place was packed with people of all ages playing games. Service was great... Just got the charcuterie board and a couple of drinks... Everything was good. I definitely plan on returning

Yelp
Went here to celebrate a friend's birthday. I was quite impressed with the attention to detail in the dinning/gaming area. The space feels elegant yet practical. We had two wait staff assisting us. The one at the beginning and most of the time was super attentive and helpful. The second one, was hard to get ahold of and seemed really good at being anywhere but around. I ordered the whipped feta with gluten free bread, and I saw the amazing baguette that came out with the non-gluten free version and was disappointed with the gluten free bread offering, as it was 1/3 the size of the other. Even my friends mentioned how disappointing it looked. There wasn't enough to finish the whipped feta, which I ended up having to eat with a spoon. Definitely needed a better vessel. I would love to try other items that are offered gluten free to see how they compare.

Yelp
This was our favorite restaurant during a summer trip to Portland. I wish Santa Barbara is as cool as Portland to support such an awesome business. Let me list all the ways that I love Mox Boarding House. 1. Food made from scratch. They didn't have to put so much effort into the food, but they did. 2. Friendly and cool servers 3. Open until midnight when many restaurants are closed 4. Can rent a game at the restaurant and try it out before you purchase 5. Huge restaurant with big long tables perfect for a group of people to play games. The layout of the place and how it transitions from the game store into the restaurant was amazing. 6. Huge game store that probably has every game in existence 7. Many local beers on draft 8. Bathroom was also cool looking I'll go ahead and say Mox Boarding House is a much visit if you are in Portland.

Yelp
Mox Boarding House is the epitome of what game stores can be. Mox features a fantastic curation of board games and geeky toys, a huge singles inventory, a diverse events offering, a large inventory of sealed product, a restaurant, drinks, clean play spaces, minifigure tables, and more. Most astonishing, Mox has fair player prices, something nearly unheard of in Oregon LGSes. Mox's clean, modern, and warm aesthetic combined with its huge diversity of events and good product prices means that despite living over an hour away, I plan to visit again repeatedly. I cannot endorse this game store enough.

Yelp
Updating this review to state that Mox has some of the best food in Portland. Some recent favourites include the Yaki Brisket Sliders, Peri Peri Calimari, and Vegan-friendly Coconut Tamarind Laksa. Every cocktail has been delicious. Most recently I've enjoyed Gentleman Pirate (rum-based) and the autumn special Naya Americana (Rye-based). The staff are incredible and super friendly. You can borrow games to play while you eat. Mox is an incredible kid friendly, allergy-friendly, place to play games and eat amazing food.

Yelp
Want have dinner and play a game- not at home? The perfect place for game night with someone to feed you cocktails and snacks. Food is terrific, the free lending of board games adds to the experience

Yelp
Love this store restaurant. They have super friendly board game enthusiast to help you find a game to your liking. Also, there are plenty of games new and old for you to try out in their restaurant area.

Yelp
Everything was wonderful! The cocktails were tasty and the staff were kind. The cookie dessert was yummy as well.

Yelp
We came here with a group of 7, on a Friday night and ended up renting a table for $40/hour with a 2 hour minimum. Food was sub-par and expensive. Chicken strips and Mac and cheese were bland and it was really disappointing. On the other hand- the whole Mox space inside is decked out with games, plenty of tables for playing, and a huge selection of beer. Onto the beer- we ordered an IPA and it tasted very much like a Pilsner. Service was great- half of our table used the QR code to order and the other half used the waiter. Our food and beer came out pretty quickly after ordering. There's plenty of games to choose from to try to play.

Yelp
Mox Boarding House is one of those rare gems that perfectly marries the joy of board gaming with a satisfying culinary journey. Not only do they serve scrumptious food, but they also have an admirable selection of craft beers and spirits that take the dining experience a notch higher. The main attraction, however, undeniably remains the brilliant concept of combining a restaurant with a board game store, making for a unique and refreshing experience. Upon arrival, the scent of delectable food mingling with the faint, comforting fragrance of board games lures you in. The food, in all its glory, is more than just a sideline show here. The menu brims with tantalizing dishes that are well-executed, and frankly, worth the visit alone. The beverage selection doesn't disappoint either, with a decent array of craft beers and spirits available. Their curated list of beverages encourages exploration and pairs nicely with their food options, enhancing your overall dining pleasure. But let's get to the heart of Mox Boarding House: the board games. The place is brimming with board games of every genre, style, and complexity level you can imagine. While not every game in their inventory is available to play at the tables, the selection that is available to check out and play during your meal is extensive. They make for a perfect accompaniment to your food and drink, adding an element of fun and engagement to your mealtime. One of the stand-out points was their enticing offer of a 15% discount if you decide to purchase a game that you've enjoyed playing at your table. It's a clever move that encourages diners to explore their wide selection of games available for purchase, and it's undoubtedly a win-win situation for both board game enthusiasts and casual gamers alike. Adding to the delightful experience was the friendly and accommodating staff. Our server was particularly amiable, making sure we were well taken care of. What impressed me further was the laid-back atmosphere, there was no rush or pressure to leave even after we had finished our meals and drinks. We were allowed to bask in our post-game discussions and musings, adding to the overall relaxed and enjoyable experience. Mox Boarding House goes beyond being a restaurant or a board game store; it creates an environment for creating memories, shared experiences, and joyful moments. It is a place for food lovers, board game enthusiasts, friends, and families. If you are a fan of good food, quality drinks, and the joyous chaos of board games, Mox Boarding House is the place to be.

Yelp
The food was okay, and it definitely could have been better. But the treatment of my students was ridiculous. I get that high school students can cause trouble, but these students specifically were picked because of their behavior to be on this trip. We don't allow students who have serious behavior problems to go on our trips for very obvious reasons. As soon as we entered the building, we were met with hostile vibes. We rented two rooms where most of the students spent all of their time. We were immediately accused of one of our students tagging on a bathroom stall. Who knows when that tag actually was put there. It could have been something old someone just happened to notice because they all of a sudden went on high alert because there were teenagers present. None of our students are taggers. We have a very small school and we know our students well. None of them in this group are into that form of art. Also, it was a very busy evening. It could have been anyone there. Plenty of adults put tags up, too. So instantly accusing us was not only rude but uncalled for. We thought it would be a fun experience for our students, many who enjoy playing D&D and other table top type games, to eat here. But after this I don't think we would ever take a group or even friends here. If you have any younger kids, I don't recommend this place. Also if you like good food, I don't recommend eating here. The tritip on the tavern mac and cheese was so disappointing. Pasta was not very flavorful, either. I'm kinda glad they ran out of the ravioli because I can't can't imagine it would have tasted any better than the mac and cheese. The cheese and meat boards were measly. The pickled grapes were inedible. The blue cheese on the burger was overwhelming. The chicken sandwich made one of our students feel ill after eating half of it. Spicy fries were oversalted. Burgers over or undercooked. The plain fries were crispy, however, and the salad looked good. Drinks are very overpriced. Soda for $4 seems a bit much. They also didn't warn us that our room rental fee would be charged on the same card as our food that night. We put a deposit down, but nothing was taken out of the deposit. It would have been great if they had told us beforehand so we knew how much our bill was going to be in the end. It's possible the card we used as a reservation was different than the one we were using for food, and that could have potentially messed up our original budget. I think the concept of this place is great, but if you assume that every teenager that enters your building is up to no good, then you're going to lose a lot of business.

Yelp
This review is strictly for food/drink service in the first room where most people play games. I don't know what they call it but before the host stand, basically the open play tables. So Mox gets a good crowd for MTG on Wednesdays and other days in the room I mentioned, I show up right around 5 and have on multiple occasions been unable to get into a game because literally every table is full, but other times only a few tables are available. this is not a bad thing, it's good since there busy. Now I used to be a server/bartender/ and restaurant manager for years, so I am in no way saying Mox is doing a bad job, that section has to be very weird to serve, however I think there can be something done to really help that section service wise. Many bars now have QR codes and each table has a number, you scan the QR code, order in your phone, stuff comes to the table number and you pay on your phone. That could be used to boost sales and alleviate stress off the wait staff to have to check in with everyone. I will say ONLY make it available to order for drinks however you can usually add a "Note" on the ticket while ordering, or maybe a selection while ordering something like "Do you plan on ordering food today? Yes/No/Later. A drink ticket comes in, "Stormbreaker Pilsner *Plans on ordering food*" or "Rootbeer, Coke, Pilsner *Just drinks tonight*" something to think about. Sometimes I come in there and sit down, jump into a Magic game and never have a person come over and just check in for 30 mins. It's not the end of the world and since I used to do this for a living I totally understand. Wednesday probably isn't too huge of a sales night in the main dining, run a shorter staff, get like 1or2 pops and deal so the staff makes money. I'm with that, run some QR codes have the MOD/Host run food drinks etc. Oh and the food has been great every time I ordered it.

Yelp
This place is a blast for hanging out, dining, and playing games. Lots of spaces for walk-in, although it can get a bit loud. You can make reservation for one of their private rooms for bigger groups as well. Food was unexpectedly good! They offer way more than just your generic taphouse/brewery menu. Plenty of fun cocktails and beers on tap. Tried the Lamb & Feta Burger with Side Salad and it's delicious. Flavors went really well together with the fig chutney, feta, and lamb patty. Although the lamb was a bit on the dry side. The side salad was refreshing with (maybe a little too) many crutons. The Thai-Style Calamari was also interesting. Again, nice flavors and Fresh calamari. Just maybe a little too crispy. Service was friendly and attentive as well. All in all, I definitely want to be back. Even just to try more of their food.

Yelp
For the most part it's good but 25% of the time I get an underwhelming dish, but still definitely worth it. The burgers are a must try, and the customer service is great! I love the fun touch that you can play board games while eating, and overall it's a must try place.

Yelp
I came here to play board games with my sister and cousins and we stayed for the food. We came into Mox Boarding House at around 6:00 PM on a week day and it was absolutely filled with people who want to eat, people who wanted to play board games, or even both (which was an interesting but smart concept). The really cool thing about Mox is that they have a very large selection of board games that you can take into their restaurant and play games while you wait for your food or eat. I thought that was very interesting and cool. We decided to get some food while we played games and I was actually quite surprised. We ordered a small charcuterie board, calamari, and chicken strips ($35 - $50) and everything was quite good. If anything the food quality was exceptionally high when you expected to only play games. Never have I ever played Magic the Gathering with a hot plate of food and a beer with great servers frequently checking up on you. It's honestly an ideal combo.

Yelp
Josh was amazing. So charismatic and very knowledgeable about drinks and the whole menu. They were very over-priced for mediocre food however. But we will come back just for Josh.

Yelp
We spent 5 hours at this place and had a total blast. Arrived there on Saturday at 7pm and it was crowded. We got really lucky to have a seat here and definitely people waiting outside. So be there a early on the weekend! They have so many games, and there is no limit on total gems Hou can choose. One game at a time at the table tho. The good part is that you can learn and play something new the bad part is if it is a née game, you will have to learn it there. And some of them is a lot of reading. So I would actually suggest you to do a little bit 'study' and know which game you would like to play and maybe watch a video to eliminate the lengthy reading. The stuff are extremely nice and will explain the games to you, but it is hard to understand it totally especially after you have couple of drinks. The food are delicious! We got a handful of appetite right, cheese board, hummus, pimento tea sandwich, tried their burger and chicken souvlaki. The humus and tea sandwich are so good. The cheese in the San witch is so creamy and soft, highly recommended. The cheese board is actually a bit disappointed, and our server is new so he is not exactly sure which cheese are on it. Aside of their food, I'm obsessed with their drinks. The tiki-jiki is probably my favorite. One of those tropical drink. The astrophysicist gives you this smokey taste, and there is this one drink with peach vodka is quite amazing too! Definitely try their cocktail. I have to point out this is a place that is a bit pricy. But you get the board game experience! So totally worth it! Try it and you won't regret.

Yelp
Very delightful. The menu was great, particularly the desserts. Love the space for playing games together and eating/ drinking. Open after the theatre which is a big plus for us. Check them out!

Yelp
Was rudely asked about my disability when I had my dog with me while shopping. For the last two years I've brought my dog while shopping, had employees ask to pet her. She in fact is a service dog but the way I was approached about my disability and "proving" she was a service dog had me leave. There's other LGS around that aren't ableist and don't rudely ask people questions in that manner. I've spent thousands of dollars here, intended to spend hundreds yesterday but I never will give this company a scent of my money going forward.

Yelp
We wanted to play a board game- we got so much more. Such a fun idea and they've pulled it off. When you arrive you walk into a great space of every board game /card games imaginable. Since we'd never been there we had to ask what to do. They have hundreds of games of all types you can check-out. Then play or not while you eat their amazing food. Prices were very reasonable as well. If you love the game you played and want to buy it then you get a discount. We had no clue what game we wanted to play. The staff plays all the games and willingly shares different types of games and helped us narrow down to a fun choice we would have never picked but loved. Definitely give it a try!

Yelp
Really cool place that I'd love to see stay open. The board game section people all seem really cool and friendly. And the food is good and also celiac-friendly, something I really appreciate. However, the red-haired waiter is really rude. I went once with friends and was willing to charitably assume he was just awkward or not having a great day, but then the next time he was even worse--acting like an iced Americano was an outlandish thing to ask for and then not even bringing it, and then making my friend feel uncomfortable speaking up about food sensitivities. I've worked food service so try to be understanding but this was over the line. I was so glad when he went on break and the younger black-haired waiter took over. I generally like this place but would hate to have him as a server again.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite spots in Portland! Great food and drinks. Love the fact you can play board games. Enjoyable spot for date night.

Yelp
Very fun place go go with a group, even just a group of 3. You can rent for free or buy games to play at the table while enjoying their unique food and drink menu. I also bought the cutest squishmallow there.

Yelp
1000% coming back here. Even if you're hesitant on going cause maybe it's not your vibe, I would highly recommend. My wife and I have been looking for a gaming bar near us and this is definitely the spot. Atmosphere is popping. Both Patrons and Staff are friendly. And the layout is amazing. There are longer farm tables if you have a large party or smaller booths for more intimate get togethers. The staff are super helpful if you don't know what game you're looking for. Just tell them how many players and what you're into or other games you've liked. Plus if you really like any of the games at the restaurant, you can simply buy a new copy on the way out, which is uncommon from the other game bars I've been to. They also don't rush you which is amazing. Despite the wait for tables and our game lasting much longer than our food, the servers never once asked if we were ready for the bill or imply we should hurry. I was also pleasantly surprised by the food. For one the menu was extremely creative and not limited to your typical deep fried greasy items. But the food was also artfully plated, tasted great, and reasonably priced. I feel that often in other game restaurants the food is a second thought. I had their Tempura tenders which was amazing. Phenomenal crunch on the batter, and the chicken was still juicy.

Yelp
I love the concept of this place!! Board games are undeniably one of my favorite hobbies in the world. They open late as well and that's always a plus. My party and I really enjoyed trying new games and actually bought one from their vast collection. The employees are very knowledgable on most and any games of your interest. The food was okay but we didn't come here for the food anyway. Definitely worth a visit!

Yelp
This place is so much fun! From the games you can borrow to the tasty food and fine selection of local drink options, it was all a great time! I had the seasonal Caesar salad with tofu which was super tasty and fresh. All of the service was super friendly and helpful. The decor was super cozy and comfortable. I loved the game they recommended and had a great time with my friends. I definitely plan to come back and look forward to more fun, chill times!

Yelp
The cafe was beautiful and there was an awesome selection of games. I came in the afternoon and it wasn't crowded at all, but I hear that it gets much busier in the evenings. Highly recommend, and I wish there was something like this in the Bay Area.

Yelp
Love this place. The food was awesome. I would recommend the Mac and cheese. The lamb and feta burger was a little on the dry side, but great flavor. The game selection was really good and they were in great condition. We had two servers- one wasn't good and didn't listen to anything we said and didn't bring the right things or check on us. The other server was fantastic and really elevated the experience. Highly recommend

Yelp
The atmosphere is great! The retail shop is organized and it's easy to browse the latest games. The staff is helpful without following you around and making you uncomfortable. The restaurant is also well-appointed. We loved that we could borrow a game to play while we were eating. The food was mediocre-not bad, just not spectacular. I had the Mox Classic, my husband ordered the Bourbon Peach Bison, and my daughter ordered the Winter Pork Loin. By far, my selection was the poorest of the bunch, somehow being dry on the edges yet a little underdone. The side of macaroni and cheese was watery. My daughter, a foodie, enjoyed her dish and my husband said his burger was better than mine. The waiter took great care of us, despite being swamped with other tables. We ordered ginger ales and they were watery. My daughter said the Zero-Proof Honeydew Daiquiri tasted more like lemonade than anything. All that being said, it is worth the experience. We would go back for drinks, appetizers, and games. Parking in the lot is quick and easy and Mox will validate up to 90 minutes.
