Is it a bar? A lounge? A game room? A hotel? Yes, the Moxy hotel in Chicago is all of hose things.
We booked the Moxy for a few nights without fully understanding what it's all about. While it is a Marriott brand, the Moxy line of hotels is not your grandfather's boring hotel with conference rooms, large ballrooms, and valets.
You walk in and see a funky, colorful bar with "graffiti" on some walls, table games, sofas and young people (mostly) hanging out with modern music playing--very lounge-like. It doesn't seem like it's marketed for the older, stale, suit-and-tie demographic. More like jeans, t-shirts and sneakers crowd. It is a fun place to hang out, have a margarita or other kinds of original-recipe cocktails. There is no sit-down restaurant, but there is the Zombie Taco place inside the Moxy serving delicious tacos for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Coffee is also on the menu, as are other food items and assorted beverages.
The room we stayed in was small. There was no closet, but we did have hangers on a long rack along the wall. It was bright, with floor-to-ceiling windows. The platform bed was comfortable, but not quite what you see at a "normal" Marriott. The room was clearly not designed for guests to stay in all day and night. It's simply a place to sleep, and get cleaned up for the day's activities.
There is a small room with a toilet, but the small shower is in the room, as in there is no fully enclosed bathroom with a toilet, sink and shower in it. The sink and shower are both part of the room, if you will. If you're with a friend or partner, don't expect much privacy in the room, other than the toilet room.
I loved the Moxy in Chicago. It is funky, fun and not stuffy. I've heard from friends who live in Chicago that they go to that hotel just for drinks at the bar. It's a good choice, as it is located in River North, the "fun" part of town. Just don't go stay there expecting a full Marriott experience.
