Moxy Oakland Downtown (San Francisco Bay Area, California) 3 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"A sure sign that downtown Oakland, California is on the up is the advent of a proper boutique hotel — in this case the Moxy Oakland Downtown, an outpost of Marriott’s most colorful, most youth-oriented sub-brand. The pink neon sign and the multi-story mural are unmissable, and check-in takes place at the hotel bar, accompanied by a freshly mixed craft cocktail; the same bar doubles as an all-day lounge and co-working space. Upstairs are 172 rooms in a modern-classic boutique-hotel style, complete with subway-tile bathrooms and efficient wall-mounted hanging storage." - Tablet Hotels

The entire staff is very unfriendly, unwelcoming and honestly seem bummed to just be there, especially the woman who works at the front desk/bar. In the lobby, they were out of hot water for tea and their coffee was old and burnt. The bar, where you get one, kind of sad limited free drink coupon, closes at 8 PM on a Saturday night apparently? There is one very thin sheet/blanket on the bed. The TVs don’t really work. The rooms are tiny. There’s no shelf in the shower, so you have to put your shampoo on the floor. As a rule, there’s no maid service during your stay. One of the elevators is broken. Definitely never staying here again and never going back to a Moxy hotel anywhere else.

On our first night of our stay we had a minor issue with our room, but the staff was so friendly and accommodating. The front desk manager was amazing, and helped us get it all sorted. Everyone on their team is really great, and they were quick to help us problem solve the issue until we could move rooms. We’d definitely recommend staying here, the ambiance and vibes are amazing.

I personally did not have a very good experience here in order to park you had to be let out of their parking lot. There really was nothing wrong with the room. It just wasn’t to my taste personally they don’t serve alcohol in their bar after 6 PM from what I understandthe other Moxie hotel that I’ve been to Nebraska is nothing short of amazing and I was hoping to have the same experience here, but unfortunately, I did not.

Not for picky travelers, not a good location for walking and sight seeing. This is basically an upgraded youth hostel. No closets in the rooms, and dirty carpets in the hallway. It definitely is for a younger, less demanding clientele. However, the staff were exemplary.

I stayed at the Moxy Oakland from May 19–21, 2025, and unfortunately, this was one of the worst hotel experiences I’ve ever had—both during the stay and in the weeks that followed.||||ROOM ISSUES & SLEEPLESS NIGHT:||Upon check-in, I was placed in a room with no working A/C. I notified the front desk and was moved to a second room—also with a broken A/C unit. I was told to just sleep with a loud box fan in a room that was over 79 degrees, making it impossible to sleep. Only the third room, offered the next day, had working air conditioning.||||I’m a frequent traveler and a commercial pilot, and I’ve never experienced this kind of poor room maintenance at a Marriott-branded property.||||NO FOLLOW-UP OR RESOLUTION:||I was told by front desk staff that a manager would reach out and that I would be offered a refund or Marriott Bonvoy points to compensate for the inconvenience. No one ever contacted me.||||When I tried to follow up, I spoke with a staff member named Elizabeth, who was dismissive, unhelpful, and unprofessional. Instead of helping resolve the issue, I was offered 30,000 points, which wouldn’t even cover one night at this same hotel. That offer felt more like a slap in the face than an apology.||||UNAUTHORIZED CHARGES:||Nearly a month after I checked out, I noticed my credit card had been charged:||||Three unauthorized transactions of $100 each (totaling $300),||Followed by three more $100 charge attempts, which were blocked only because I had to freeze my card.||I contacted Marriott Bonvoy customer service, and even they confirmed that the hotel could not explain or verify these charges. Yet, they still occurred. I have since disputed the charges with my bank and am pursuing further steps to protect myself.||||SUMMARY:||No functioning A/C||Lack of sleep on the first night||No follow-up from hotel leadership||Unprofessional staff||$300 in unauthorized charges with repeated attempts to charge more||If I hadn’t caught the fraudulent activity, I could’ve been charged hundreds more dollars without ever being told why.||||I expected much better from a Marriott-branded property. ||||I do not recommend this hotel to anyone, especially business travelers or anyone who expects basic accountability. If you stay here, watch your credit card statements carefully.

Place is decent and clean but overall not worth the price. Paying for a small room with nothing better than what you get at a basic hotel. No ice machine, coffeemaker only downstairs, barely any soap or toliet paper. You have to pay for parking which is $47 a night. In a ghetto sketchy area, car got robbed across the street from the place. Downstairs lobby has a couple of games but overall only paying for the vibes of the downstairs lobby.

Run! This place is run down with no oversight from Marriott. No clue what has happened there in the last month or so but it’s awful. No working elevator for a 6 floor building, no A/C. Unprofessional staff and unresponsive! Wish I didn’t blindly trust the Marriott name for this last stay. Hiltons have been stepping it up lately and I might need to switch teams. Woke up to 77 degree room with 77% humidity.

If you’re looking for a rotary telephone and lighting like a brothel, this place is great. But simple things like a coffee maker in the room? Nope. I’ve stayed in a lot of budget hotels around the world, but this is the first time I couldn’t get a coffee maker or hot water boiler on the room.
