New York Vietnamese Restaurant Banh Mi Saigon Still Nails the Sandwich | Eater NY

"My Los Angeles friends had long taken drive-in banh mi chains like Mr. Baguette for granted as part of their mix of Vietnamese restaurants; the lighter, crustier baguettes Banh Mi Saigon began producing in 2010 were notable because they even impressed those friends." - Robert Sietsema

Google
Mr. Baguette is nice and fresh, and the baguettes are amazing. I ordered the lemongrass beef, and the flavor was top tier 😋👌 — definitely the highlight of my visit. Unfortunately, the service needs some improvement. I was order number 70 and waited quite a while. On the receipt, you can see that my order time reflects a long wait, during which I was just sitting there on my phone playing games. They ended up calling number 73, so I went to the front to ask about my order. The gentleman told me my order had been given to the wrong person. I waited a bit longer, and I believe the person who received my order came back with it. The situation felt uncomfortable because the kitchen staff seemed visibly upset and were speaking loudly instead of calmly resolving the issue. When the wrong baguette was brought back, it looked like there was confusion about whether it would be given to me again, which made me question the food safety of the situation. I asked the gentleman if my replacement order was truly fresh, and he assured me it was. I also asked for management’s name (Tang on Valley). Overall, the food is excellent and absolutely worth trying, but the service and communication during order mix-ups definitely need some work.

Google
Sandwich was really good I asked by lemongrass beef, coffee was too sweet for my taste but the gentleman kindly added some more milk to low the sugared level, fast service clean place, I’ll be back, got The deals, little pricey but good.

First time here and I loved it! I got the vegetarian ham bahn mi, my friend the veggie turkey. Both were amazing. The bread was so crisp and light. Crunchy veggies and tasty plant based 'meat'. It did come with mayo, so not vegan without modification. They also sell the veggie deli meat by itself!

Google
First time trying Mr. Baguette. I noticed on the menu that they have authentic Vietnamese and American Vietnamese Bánh mì. For me, I always select authentic cuisine special #1. The baguette was perfectly baked and the right amount of ingredients. I thought the vegetables were perfectly pickled. I will definitely return to try another sandwich.

Google
I really enjoy eating sandwiches here. The bread is chruncky and a bit hard but it's good. There is some seats available to eat and restrooms. The lemongrass beef is delicious!. The raisin roll is delicious as well. I like coming here when ever I crave it.

Eri S.

Google
I really enjoy the sesame baguette here. They also have a breakfast combo where you can get a breakfast sandwich and a choice of coffee, juice or smoothies for $10. The bacon sandwich is great if you love bacon. As you can see from the picture, they don’t skimp on the bacon.

Went in and the lady in the front was so rude! She was taking out the trash and walked passed me hit me twice with the bag and she didn’t apologize or even acknowledge me. When she came back I was waiting to place my order but she was just facing the rear of the building. It seemed as if she was purposely ignoring me. This is the second time I try to order something and both times I’m met with this type of service. I don’t know if it’s because of my race or she’s just like that with everyone, but I’m not giving this place another try!

Nicole

Google
Service is just ok. But the Vietnamese coffee is absolutely great. The sad thing is that prices keep going up. It was just $2.99 before coffee now it is $4.99. The bread is good, we had just coffee and a baguette which we enjoyed. If you’re lucky to get it while is fresh it comes out so warm and soft. Yummy!

Yelp
Ordered 5 BBQ Pork Bahn Mi sandwiches to go. I requested for vegetables on the side to assemble when ready to eat later at home. The order was ready in 5 mins. I also ordered Vietnamese ice coffee. It was super strong. I waited a little bit for the ice to dilute it.... then it was perfect. Honestly the sandwiches can use more meat. I had better. I don't think there was much or if any pate or butter. Would I come back? I may just get dim sum at NBC in the same complex.

Yelp
Absolutely terrible employees here particularly the ladies in the back making the sandwich who treated me very rudely for requesting additional mayonnaise. Truly one of the most discourteous experiences I've ever had at a restaurant. ASKING FOR MAYO at a sandwich shop is exactly the equivalent of asking for ketchup at a burger shop or salsa at a Mexican food restaurant. I should not have been treated in a super disrespectful way and then DENIED service after I already paid for the food. I also asked for additional veggies on the sandwich when I ordered, the new hire forgot to charge for it... SO they came over to my table after I paid and asked me to pay an additional$.50. Imagine being so petty... but TRULY I didnt even trip at all!! IN FACT fact bought an extra baguette to take away. Then when I got my sandwiches, there was no extra mayonnaise, which I ordered. Chicken sandwich was dry as a bone. When I asked for extra mayo they looked at me like I was crazy. It's as if I had just asked them to sign over the deed of their home. They literally denied me and told me that they don't want to give it to me!!!! That was literally infuriating. I have actually been frequenting the other location on Valley for years, but I will never go to either of them again after this experience . And to the old lady; you need to watch the way you treat your customers. You don't have any respect for people who are patronizing your business, if you hate your job so much just quit. And let's be honest here; these ban mi are super mid quality. I only come here because these guys have the low price combo deal, so it's cheap. I suggest anyone who read reads this to try some other shops super near by, that have way better quality and won't treat you like a piece of garbage when you ask for a condiment that every restaurant on earth would give out for free. BA LE (way better) Banh Mi My Tho (way way better) Banh mi Che cali (even cheaper)

Yelp
In the plaza of NBC Seafood, this place has such a casual bright ambiance. I wanted to get coffee and since I love their sandwiches (but already ate dimsum), I thought I'd order an iced coffee. I've only ever came here for sandwiches so it's my first time ordering a coffee. When ordering you ah w the option for sugar and or milk to be included. I wasn't sure so I asked no milk and with sugar. Once ordered, I got a receipt with an order number and can pick it up at the counter on the other side. It didn't take more than a few minutes for me to get my order! The coffee is strong and definitely wakes me up!

Yelp
If you live around the area, then you know that Mr Baguette has been around for years and is a no-frill, staple in Monterey Park. There is plenty of seating in there and could be a great quiet study spot. I've been getting their Sesame Baguette and Reg Baguette for years, and have never been disappointed by their quality and consistency (10/10). Sometimes, if you get lucky, the baguette comes freshly baked and piping hot. Mr. Baguette also provides a variety of sandwiches and banh mi + house made drinks on the menu. Today was the first time I tried their #1 Special banh mi and was pleasantly surprised. It was a solid 8/10 for me. With the reasonable price point and proximity to my house, I would gladly visit Mr Baguette again!
google avatar

Christopher D.

Yelp
It's pretty good. The baguettes are fresh and service is quite good. It's a standard banh mi for ~$10. Would I recommend it? Probably not because of the higher price. That said, I would come back again if I'm in the area & really want a banh mi. There's a small seating area, but I think most folks order to go.

Yelp
I've only tried Mr Lees sandwiches before, so I decided to try Mr Baguette because it gave the same vibe. Service was good, the ladies did their best to accommodate my tastebuds since I am always a little skeptical to try new cuisine. I opted for the american sandwich that was ham and cheese and decided to add egg on it; it was pretty good and simple. Bread wasn't stale but it was hard of texture like any other banh mi I've tried before. The dining area was spacious with plenty of seating. Alongside my sandwich, I ordered a vietnamese ice coffee which was STRONG. I was blown away how strong that coffee was I couldn't finish it because after a few sips I was WIRED. Overall it was a good experience but the food wasn't the best even though I did get a special on it. It's a good solid business with great customer service and convenient prices!

Yelp
Get my banh mi fix Sweet workers Nobody ever in there where I like to go in and get out Usually maybe older sweet people eating reading newspaper The special is the one but sometimes feel like adding pate and it's delicious
google avatar

BoBaManiac N.

Yelp
I ordered the Vietnamese combination sandwich at Mr. Baguette, and I genuinely regret every bite. The bread was so dry it felt like I was chewing through sandstone and my mouth turned into the Sierra Desert halfway through. The fillings were a scattered mess. Nothing worked together. It was like someone threw a bunch of random cold cuts into the bread and called it a day. No harmony, no balance, no flavor. I've had better cohesion from a sandwich I accidentally dropped.

Yelp
It's been a really long time since I've been back to this location in MPK. I came with my Dad on a weekday about 30 minutes before closing. It looked like they were done for the day since it was super empty, but we were helped out right away. We ordered a pork sandwich and chicken sandwich. They came out pretty quickly and was delicious! The bread was nice, warm and soft. Lots of the customers who came in after us seemed to have ordered just the baguette bread to take home, so I'll have to remember that for next time!
google avatar

Karina C.

Yelp
I have tried different sandwiches all are good, but I always come back for the baguette It is the best of the best for only $2.00 is fresh and you can make the best sandwich with it. The service is fine the ladies are super sweet and always greet you with a smile. They explained everything in her way possible since English isn't their language but they're the sweetest. The Ambiance is quite perfect for a chill conversation over a drink and a good sandwich with good company. The restrooms are clean and the parking lot is huge. Recommended it.

Daeonysus O.

Yelp
My favorite place to get a tuna sandwich!!! They're fast at making them, they come with a pickle and chile on the side, and the portion size is enough even for two people!
google avatar

Diana W.

Yelp
$7.74 Pate and Pork Meatloaf #2. Our local fast food bun mi to-go chain. Reliable chain. Better quality than Bun Mi Chi Cali. Been coming for years. But definitely not the best. Parking can be difficult with such a popular plaza so there's street parking or underground parking too. Same plaza with dim sum. The bread could be pretty hard at times. It's not hefty. Really, I'd just be willing to wait for Bun Mi Toe (Alhambra valley original location) if I could.
google avatar

Neal N.

Yelp
I love coming to this place for their sesame baguettes. There's something about them that makes them so tasty. Aside from that, their BBQ pork baguette sandwich is amazing. Essentially since everything is made fresh and to order. The staff here is always polite and friendly, which I appreciate. They also make every attempt to keep the dining area clean, but I can't help leaving a trail of crumbs behind. They smile and laugh as I try to clean up after myself, then just gesture to me to leave it. They also offer Thai ice tea and coffee, but I've yet to try them. I assume they're good as many people order them with their sandwiches.
google avatar

Yelp
Good Vietnamese style sandwiches with some euro style options. Variety of other items and strong good tasting coffee. Bread is good as well

Linda S.

Yelp
I haven't had their coffee in a long time and I was craving for it. Saw they had a combo deal and I couldn't resist. I saved about $4 getting this combo instead of buying each item individually.

Brian E.

Yelp
Pretty good. I got the special for $8.50 the flavors blend really well together. Bread is awesome too
google avatar

Mike R.

Yelp
One of the better coffees in the area. Sandwiches I always get either #1 or #11, so yum! The ladies working there always have a smile with great service. Store is always clean and all lit.
google avatar

Yelp
I love their tuna sandwiches ! Def recommend that as the first thing to try from here, I had their raisin bread too it was better than k expected :p
google avatar

T L.

Yelp
This place is still solid. Love the little older ladies working here. The new vegetarian chicken is very good, and so is the veggie ham.

Bryan A.

Yelp
I love coming here for their fresh bread and surprisingly delicious chicken curry! I got the raisin bread for the first time today and it was sweet and slightly gooey inside....mmmm. Prices are reasonable and the place is kept clean and tidy inside. I have never had an issue with service. Bonus: they offer wifi too. Only CON I can think of is how wasteful they are with plastic containers. I wish dining establishments like this would be more mindful and look for alternatives.

Yelp
Some friends and I hit up Mr. Baguette after dim sum nearby for some Vietnamese coffee, and pork Bahn Mi (not pictured because I had no self-control), & chicken Pate Chaud (think croissant stuffed with ground chicken) to enjoy later. As a bonus I scored a free baguette for checking in on Yelp! The food and drinks were exceptional in portion-size and taste! The facilities were clean, and there was ample parking on the shopping center where the restaurant is located. 5/5!

CC W.

Yelp
Cashier was friendly and patiently answered the questions I had about the menu. Service was efficient. The sandwiches themselves were delicious and on point. Bread was crunchy on the outside and chewy and soft on the inside. I had the deli meat combo and the grill pork sandwiches. Both had enough meat and veggies in there. No complaints here!
google avatar

Tanya S.

Yelp
So yummy. They open early and good for Togo. We came back the next morning because it was so good.
google avatar

Paola M.

Yelp
I like this location. I always get good service. I like most of the sandwiches here and of course you can't go wrong with their iced coffee. There is a private lot for parking but you can also park on the street just make sure you read the signs!
google avatar

Nicole Y.

Yelp
YGS i love this restruant i get it like almost every week it's so good. The bread is also extremely crispy when brought fresh i luv it.
google avatar

Maggie Q.

Yelp
They're GOOD! One of the best in the area, and the bread is still got hours later. I always get the special with extra pate. My partner loves the grilled pork one, and also tried the lemongrass beef one and it's all delicious. The last time we ordered on a Wednesday afternoon, there was a bogo deal on the grilled pork banh mi. Last few times we've ordered close to closing time and had the sandwiches for dinner.
google avatar

Graciela C.

Yelp
The coffee. The iced coffee. INSANITY. At $6, this is the most expensive 'Vietnamese' coffee around. This ultra strong yet delicious iced coffee is sure to get you employee of the month and a raise once you boss sees you outperforming everyone around you. Problem is the line but worth it.
google avatar

Judy T.

Yelp
After moving to East LA, it was one of our closer banh mi spots. I was craving an authentic banh mi and was interested in trying their veggie meat versions. Most places have the shredded veggie pork/bi sandwich but they have a veggie turkey! You can also buy the veggie meat in their fridge. I bought and egg and cheese sandwich and the veggie turkey. The bread wasn't too hard and the flavor was good. It definitely satisfied my craving. Parking was easy. and service was quick and easy.
google avatar

Dan T.

Yelp
Excellent delicious sandwich. Fresh bouquet breads n cold cuts. Love the quite and clean restaurant
google avatar

Gloria L.

Yelp
I enjoy coming for my fix of Vietnamese coffee. They also serve good banh mi sandwiches and a variety of pastries. I like that you can choose your type of baguette bread for your sandwich. This visit, I got the shredded chicken banh mi with sesame baguette and it was delicious and filling. There was a good amount of chicken and veggies. I would come back to try their pastries.
google avatar

Ms X.

Yelp
Had a really lovely sandwich here. Wanted some of the fancier sandwiches but the lady steered me clear of them due to my garlic allergy. The price and taste was good and fresh.
google avatar

Quinn V.

Yelp
Fast service. Great vegan options! Rare for a banh mi place. Plenty of parking. Will definitely come back

Sylvia R.

Yelp
The baguette was delicious !!! Smoothie very fresh 10/10. Would come again and very good customer service
google avatar

Thuy Dan T.

Yelp
Super fast and efficient and the staff are so friendly here! I ordered the Special -- wish there was more meat so you had some of all three meats in each bite. I didn't taste the pate as well. The baguette was very crunchy and quite large. The pickled veggies were nice and crunchy. I would think about getting a different Banh mi or asking for extra of things :) Pate chaud - super flakey, meat filling was really juicy and there was a layer of special Mayo around the meat? Which I actually loved for that saucy flavor!
google avatar

Joann V.

Yelp
3.5 stars As much as I love Mr. baguette, I can't justify their ever-increasing prices. Since my last review, the price of the sandwich is now $7.74. An $0.85 increase. The taste is obviously still the same addicting taste. But...I think I'll have to come here a little less frequently.
google avatar

Sergio D.

Yelp
The sandwiches with the best combinations. The employees were all helpful and fast workers. I recommend this location to everyone I know, so please be sure to check it out soon. Enjoy! - Sergio Dee
google avatar

Steven H.

Yelp
Update from last review. Service is still consistant & friendly. Bread today however was quite dry. The banh mi i ordered was flaking like a cracker. Bread was tearing the roof of my mouth. The portion of meat they put in the sandwiches seems to be less than before as well.

G Y.

Yelp
I like their baguette, but they are super stingy with a meat and vegetable. Services are also spotty, and generally not great.
google avatar

Yvonne C.

Yelp
You won't have a problem finding parking here, there is plenty! The employees were all in white uniform and they were fast and efficient. I ordered the special but I wish I ordered two sandwiches so I can see if the other banh mi taste better. I did not like the special sandwich much. The bread was crunchy and the meats were okay. Something was missing for my tastebuds. I just can't pinpoint it...
google avatar

Kristen N.

Yelp
Great spot for a quick and cheap meal! The sandwiches are packaged to go and we oftentimes buy a few of these for road trips. Their coffee is also fantastics, however, it's VERY strong. Oftentimes, I find myself bringing the iced coffee back home and adding more milk, otherwise, I'll have the jitters all day! The service is just so-so. Nothing bad, but nothing spectacular.
google avatar

Leiyanne R.

Yelp
Parking: Easy to park in the plaza open lot. Food: As someone who never really craves sandwiches, I can confidently say Mr. Baguette makes their baguette sandwiches special somehow lol. I always find myself coming back for their ham and egg sandwich. I've brought my friends here before and they raved about their banh mi! - Ham and Egg Sandwich - Egg and Cheese Sandwich Ambiance: It's typically very bare inside and always clean. Never really crowded so it's easy to dine-in for a quick bite. The service is always fast for take-out so I'm sure dine-in service is just as quick.
google avatar

David W.

Yelp
Great place for a quick fix during the morning! They open exactly at 7AM and parking is always available. Not crowded at all. Staff was friendly and the order came out surprising fast. My favorite is the Pork and Chicken Pie (Pate Chuad). Bread is soft and a ball of meat right in the middle. Definitely a great pick if you want to eat something on the go. Got the Banh Mi #1 Special and it was pretty good. Taste very standard and nothing really stood out to me. The bread was alright but it does get HARD very quickly! Its better to eat it right away when it's out fresh. Orange Juice is great! They literally squeeze the orange and it's very sweet. Vietnamese Iced coffee is also a very good pick. It's quite strong.
google avatar

Karen P.

Yelp
Still as delicious as ever. It's a fresh baguette bakery so you can drop by and pick up as much freshly baked bread as you want. And as delicious as the sandwiches are, don't sleep on the curry! It takes a little longer to prepare than the other items, but well worth the wait. Fresh crispy bread dipped in a little curry and washed down with a strong cup of Vietnamese coffee; can it get better than that? On another note to all my dog lovers out there: there's an outdoor patio space with tables on a first come basis
google avatar

Jessica N.

Yelp
MUST GET. 10/10 highly recommend the grilled pork bahn mi. Hot and crispy bread with a flavorful filling.
google avatar

Liliana D.

Yelp
What makes this place special are the baguettes. Which are made by amazing women. They are committed to quick and personable service. Go- to baguettes include the Saigon Bacon, cheese and egg baguette, and veggie ham. They always came through for beach days, picnics, and nurses appreciation week (: Enjoy your sandwich with fresh OJ/iced coffee. Happy eating!
google avatar

Jessica G.

Yelp
Me.Baguette was a quick and simple breakfast spot to get on the way to school! Growing up my dad rarely had time to make breakfast because half the time I waited until the last min to wake up. Pork roll and pate with sesame bun, double meat (so you can eat it for 2 meals) and a viet coffee! Their croutons are pretty good too!
google avatar

Rachelle R.

Yelp
This place came highly recommended by two French guys I know. It is well known that the French are very particular about their bread and coffee. We ordered the French coffee which is made with hot milk and sweetened with sugar. We also ordered croissant to go with it. We were not disappointed as the coffee is as good as ones in Paris and croissant's flaky crust was delish! Must try.
google avatar

Stephanie V.

Yelp
#8 with extra pate or a #9 are my go to items. Iced coffee as well. The ladies at the cash register are friendly and helpful when you have questions. The bread is perfectly crispy/ crunch on the outside and the areas is soft inside. Veggies and whatever you fill inside your sandwich is yummy and fresh. Go here at least once a week!
google avatar

Young P.

Yelp
I always stop by here to pick up bahn mi and Vietnamese iced coffee. Food is decent, service is fast, and price is pretty reasonable. They have a variety of bahn mi options but I usually stick with beef or pork. Their Vietnamese iced coffee is super strong so if you are not a coffee drinker or can't handle sudden caffeine intake, I advise you hold off on drinking until ice melts to dilute the coffee a bit further.
