"Serving hickory-smoked, Lexington-style barbecue since 1962, Mr. Barbecue rose from the ashes to reopen after a 2019 fire destroyed the original building. It was rebuilt in 2023 after a car crashed through its dining room. The restaurant’s footprint remains the same but with the addition of a sleek drive-thru. The signature fried chicken and chopped barbecue dominate the menu, but get there early to order the crispy pork skins, because they sell out fast. French fries, hushpuppies, and two kinds of coleslaw are standards, but the Greek-style green beans deserve a spotlight." - Nikki Miller-Ka

"The raging fire that engulfed Winston-Salem’s beloved Mr. Barbecue burned a hole “big enough for three SUVs side by side” and required so much water that it destroyed virtually everything inside the family-owned restaurant. But that wasn’t enough to convince owner Jimmy Carros to stop using wood-burning barbecue pits. Mr. Barbecue recently reopened almost two years after the fire. The pandemic didn’t exactly speed up the relaunch, but more than anything, rainy weather slowed down construction, Carros said. Locals eagerly awaited the humble restaurant’s return, with more than 100 people lining up before its doors formally opened last month." - Eric Ginsburg

UPDATE! ARE you more concerned with the score or the quality of food? I gave what I gave. Your front ladies were not friendly and they didn't give me a receipt nor did they thank me for my order. Again I say this was a first!!!! This is the first time I was given old banana pudding. It was dark and tasted very old. I've never eaten anything like that before from them. Very disappointed. Also the food was cold.

WOW ! Just WOW ! Jimmy and his team do a remarkable job from the first phone call to delivery to pick up. Food awesome, friendly service. Highly recommend for any catering needs.

They did a fantastic job catering a wedding welcome party at Incendiary Brewery. The coordinator, James, handled everything, and we were able to meet in person to discuss our needs. The staff was professional, and everything went off without a hitch. Our entire guest list of almost 90 had a great time, and mentioned throughout the night how they liked the food. I’d recommend them for catering in the future.

When I went in there were 3 girls behind the counter just talking. After standing there for a considerable time I had to ask one of them if I could order. When my food was brought out a lot of the fries fell out of the tray and not replaced. The BBQ on the sandwich was large chunks and not very well chopped. The slaw and the hushpuppies were great. Needless to say I was disappointed. Not the usual great food that I have always had in the past

Got the chopped plate and sliced plate with collard greens coleslaw potato salad and fried okra. Greens and okra we're good. Tater salad and slaw we're average. Pork was EXCELLENT! So common to get dryish pork and then it's compensated by slaw and sauce but this was not the case pork was perfectly tender and juicy. Line at the drive-thru was not super fast (~10-15 mins w/ 5-7 cars) but what do you expect when their food is this good and would you want to wait less time for lesser quality food LOL And each of those plates was $10.70 for two sides plus hush puppies!!! (Enough for 2 people IMO) Will definitely be swinging by next time I'm in town and definitely recommend!

I guess it's time for the owner to take another negative reviews to task. But I know what I received was sub par at best. I happened by a couple of nights ago. Went through the drive-thru. I ordered a cheeseburger with mayonnaise and tomato and a 1/2 pound of chopped BBQ. The burger $7 a classic frozen disk that had little to no flavor. The tomato was "with green core" but the best part of the sandwich. The real let down was the mediocre BBQ. No way was the chopped BBQ Lexington style. The BBQ was a hodge podge collection of what appeared to be scrap. Arbitrary chopped, pulled, coarse chopped, burnt ends...bits a pieces but not a consistent chopped pork. What stood out to be was the BBQ I received looked more like a Pork BBQ soup. These random pieces of pork were floating in red soup. The BBQ and I use that word loosely was sopping wet! More liquid that meat. And this sauce was more like a cheap kraft sauce than a vinegar based sauce. Flavor? 1 to 10 was a 3 at best. The texture? Some pieces hard Some burned. All chewy. None tender. I am just a customer not a troll not being dishonest. I too ate here 20 plus years ago. This was a poor offering compared to the good old days of Mr BBQ. guess it's time for the owner to take another negative reviews to task. But I know what I received was sub par at best. I happened by a couple of nights ago. I was coming back from a visit at Novant Hospital in Winston-Salem. Be sure you get the last word as I see you make sure you do. Easy for you to make accusations. I know what I experienced. I know it was a fair assessment. I know I am entitled to my opinion. One thing I will allow you to dictate is that I will lower my standards to your level to respond to you. Yes I make some negative reviews. Why? Take a look at the number of likes from both positive and negative reviews. Could they just be honest reviews? Many people by a thumbs 👍 up agree with me either positive or negative. However that would be difficult for you to discern if you are looking to validate your response of my review. I waited in your parking lot for the order. That frozen disk took a whole lot of time to cook. I sat watching transients for a really long time no complaints i knew you would possibly yammer about fresh food, made to order takes time. The service was slow. Even if the hamburger was fresh paddied. It surely wasn't. "Atmosphere" per review, The atmosphere was inside a locked car however sitting for a really long time observing transients wasn't the best. But honestly it took way to long to receive my food.I did not eat the food in the parking lot. I was on the way home. I wasn't turning around off I40 to run back to your business. All I wanted from you was decent food. I didnt get that. Making it right? Your BBQ isn't made to order. Would another container of your BBQ of⁸ been close to if not a replica of what I received? I expected a better product plain and simple.

Google
Simply AMAZING BBQ. The portions are perfect. We had the Chunky Pork and the BBQ chicken plates. The potato salad, fried okra, onion rings and hush puppies were the perfect companions to our wonderful meal.

Google
Lots of food - portions are good. Had the brisket, mashed potatoes, and cole slaw. Cole slaw and the hush puppies were good. Brisket just wasn't that great. Not sure maybe we just got an off batch so will try again, but just seemed undercooked for brisket - really chewy - not the fall apart texture i like for brisket. I don't eat meat often (though my husband does), so if I'm getting something I'd like it to be really good. Will try one more time and update! Service was great - people were really nice, and it's a comfortable place to hang out and have a meal

Yelp
Came here on a whim and left saying it was one of our favorite BBQ places so far! This unassuming place from the outside is clean, modern and welcoming in the inside. Staff were friendly and willing to help with the menu. I had the chopped BBQ sandwich combo. Was recommended by the staff to do half and half on fries and hush puppies. It was great. The bun was delicious and unlike anything else. Fresh, homemade like. Love. Our other order was a brisket sandwich and it got rave reviews too. The house sauce was so good we put it on everything. We could have bought it in a bottle! Prices were competitive but a bit higher than closer to home for sides and dessert or we'd have tried more. Overall we'd definitely come back. Add it to your list! This is a gem.

Yelp
Excellent fried chicken and bbq slaw, the green beans arent my thing though. Brisket can be dry at times but the pork is always good, ask for the sauce on the side

Nickie H.

Yelp
We got a pound of chopped BBQ . And half quart of slaw. We ask for chopped and brown side not coarsed and not minced or fine chopped. And it was exactly what we wanted. Great flavor smoky taste and texture was perfect. We also love their fried chicken too! It Is just like grandma made.

Yelp
There are few places in the Triad where you can get both good barbecue and good fried chicken - you would have to go to Burlington, to Hursey's, to find a better option for both items, in combination. This place has been serving their pork and chicken since 1962, and they still cook over hardwood coals, but I'm not sure they cook fresh each day. This is a typical old school NC BBQ joint, with inside seating for perhaps 40 comfortably, and there is some outside seating as well, and there is a drive- thru too. The inside seating is mainly hard wood bench seat, and comfort is not their strong suit. I ordered the Sliced BBQ Sandwich with BBQ slaw on the side. Ordering the slaw this way tends to keep the bun from coming apart, and the flavor of the pork is not masked! The sandwich is large, right up there with Real Q and Little Richard's. Served this way the pork on this sandwich is rather dry and needs to be sauced well - I added both Texas Pete and the house sauce. Turned out very nice. I also ordered their Fried Chicken Sandwich, which also is large, almost as large as the one at Bad Daddy's, though BD's is buck less. I doused it with Texas Pete, and it was so good, Popeye would have cried. It would rival any fast food option available locally. The folks here do well on the service side. There is no table service - you order and pay at the register, and they will bring the meal to your table. Time out of the kitchen is reasonable at the very least. Pig and chicken together - marriage made in the Southern part of heaven ! Note: the Hot Dog here is excellent, on par with PB's and Clark's in Kernersville, better than Kermit's and Pulliams. And the Hush Puppies are among the best, as well!

Yelp
Walking into Mr Barbecue, I realized I have watched the movie "Spaceballs" one too many times in my life. Though I didn't voice it to anyone, after placing my order, I was internally saying things like "Time to fill up Mr. Tea, let's add Mr. Hot Sauce" or "I always have barbecue before I watch radar! You know that! Everybody knows that!" My own personal strangeness aside, Mr. Barbecue is a Winston-Salem institution. Unfortunately, several years ago, a fire burnt their building to the ground. They have since rebuilt a fresh modern spot, but with plenty of that "we've been here awhile" flair. Inside, the people are friendly, and the vibe is perfectly North Carolina BBQ. You order at the counter, and if dining in, they bring your food out to you. You'll also get your own drinks. No issue there at all, honestly, wish more places just did this instead of having waiter service. I'm watching my carb intake and trying to have more protein and vegetables, so I ordered a chopped BBQ salad. Unknowingly, this came with hushpuppies, a plus indeed but I did my best to just have a few to taste. The salad itself, was a really nice size, and loaded with meat. Perfect. The ingredients all appeared fresh, as you might assume, salad is not a priority at a BBQ restaurant, so even though basic... I appreciate crisp veggies. For the Q itself, as I said, great portion. In general, I thought it was a good representation of Lexington NC style Q. It didn't blow my mind, and I did need to help boost the flavor with a little hot sauce. Importantly though, the meat was juicy with an excellent mouth feel. Just needed more seasonings and smoke. Hushpuppies were good, they don't compare to my favorites in the area, but that is a lofty bar. Overall. I would come back here. Maybe when I am not feeling quite so health conscious, I'd like to have more of a typical BBQ meal. I can see why this place has a lot of fans. Thanks Mr. Barbecue!

Yelp
This was my first time here the workers were amazing nice and friendly when attending me , once i got my food the mashed potatoes were watered down the bbq sandwich was dry the fries were good but in all general it's alright

Yelp
I was recently the beneficiary of an offer I couldn't refuse. You see, there is a Nigerian prince and he offered me 15 million bucks... Ha. Nope. For seriously, I was able to attend a retirement party that was overloaded with tasty, tasty meat and sides from Mr. Barbeque. I didn't expect much because it had been years since I had anything from Mr. Barbeque, and the last time I went there, I had chicken. The chicken was good, but the memories are foggy, and I vaguely remember it. So this time, I got a nice helping of bbq and hush puppies and green beans. Though I had some nice table-mates - stimulating conversationalist types - I walked away for a second helping. Then, when all/most of the conversating was completed (and nobody was looking), I found a container and took some home, where lo-and-behold, my wife heaped high praises on the food that I so amazingly provided. I didn't lie. I told the truth about the provision of the vittles. "Tweren't me" says I. Still, I experienced a hero's welcome. What an auspicious day that I shall long remember. Oh yeah, and the hush puppies are super tasty, crispy, and infinitely edible. The green beans had diced toe-mah-ters in them. Very good. Can't say anything about the service since I wasn't there to purchase the food and the location was outside of Mr. Barbeque's venue. I don't know who this Mister Barbeque is, but I want to shake his hand.

Yelp
Despite doing through Winston for years, this was my first time visiting Mr. Barbecue, and it did NOT disappoint! (My son, who lived in Winston for years, swears they are best BBQ joint in NC.) I had the brisket tray with red slaw and hush puppies, with unsweet tea - a true Carolina tradition. The barbecue is Lexington style, and the brisket was tender and delicious. The red slaw is a favorite of mine, too. If you're local, or just passing through, it's well worth a visit!

Yelp
I was visiting from Southern California and wanted to try some good NC BBQ. Having no clue where to go, I consulted YELP. The YELP reviews for Mr. BBQ were really good and the place was on the way to where I was headed and so I thought I'd give it a try. I had to ask some locals what the difference between chopped and chunked BBQ was. Having received my answer (it's kind of what I thought - chopped=the meat is chopped up fine and chunk=the meat is in cubes) I opted for chunk. I ordered the chunk BBQ plate with BBQ coleslaw (I'm told it's a "thing" in NC ) and baked beans. The plate came with hushpuppies. I took my BBQ home and plated it up. I started with the hushpuppies and they did not disappoint. Crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside. The BBQ meat was delicious and tender. The sauce is different than what I am used to. It was thin and tasted sharp with vinegar. I liked it and it complemented the meat perfectly. The beans were absolutely delicious. The were smokey and sweet. This brings me to the coleslaw... When I looked at the pictures online, I thought it looked a lot different than the coleslaw I'm used to, but since it's a thing, I thought I should try it. Well...I will be polite and just say that I am not a fan. Mr. BBQ did have another coleslaw option, and I assume it was more like what I'm used to, but, when in Rome. The restaurant was clean and I liked the way it was decorated. Kind of modern farmhouse style. The employees were all attentive and helpful. I would go back again and try some of the other sides if I find myself in Winston Salem again. Thanks Mr. BBQ!

Yelp
We use to go to Mr.BBQ every few months on medical visits to BowmanGrey ( aka Wake Forest's medical school ). It's been three years but the BBQ is still my favorite in NC . Sadly they no longer serve the incredible homemade cakes they once did ...Man,I was bummed .But glory be to God -. They still serve the best banana pudding I've had .It's warm which is usually a killer for me .But Mr.BBQ's banana pudding with its large amount of meringue is celebratory level dessert The only negatives ---peach cobbler has too much ginger .Red slaw is too .,something .Go with the white slaw .

Brandon T.

Yelp
Service was good. I went through the drive thru window so I did not get to see what the inside looked like.

Barrie P.

Yelp
I work near the restaurant and have eaten here twice this week. Both times we got the chopped plate with fried okra and potato salad. My son and I also tried the oreo pie, banana pudding, and sweet tea. Our 1st visit was perfect except for the banana pudding.. The bananas were an odd texture.. The barbecue was amazing as well as the okra and potato salad. We also enjoyed the hush puppies. The 2nd time the the barbecue was not quite as a amazing but still very good.. The tea was excellent both times and we love the oreo dessert. The drive-through is quick and very convenient. They also do a good job with the accuracy of the orders.

Kelly P.

Yelp
Service is speedy and excellent. Food is way overrated and overpriced. Chunky 'cue a bit dry and tough. Fragrance and flavor correct but not what you came there for. Slaw fine but not exemplary. Hush puppies perfect, but I've never met a hush puppy I didn't like. Green beans were wrong. Not good for a restaurant in the South. Not good for a middle school in the South. I have no idea what happened but that silliness can't be served. Lastly the ribs. Fragrance nice, flavor appealing but hard to tell and unpleasant to eat because they're drenched in Kansas City/grocery store style goo. Why is that? It should be noted I bought this just before closing on a Friday night. Maybe this meat was a lot better at lunch time. I don't know and I'm unlikely to find out. Sorry neighbor. This isn't worth it.

Yelp
Finally, the hype of their reopening has calmed down so we could get the chance to stop in and see for ourselves. Well the hype is understandable to me now! This is some of the best BBQ Winston has to offer! The place is setup cafeteria style. Place your order at the counter (or call ahead) pick a table, and the friendly staff will bring out your trays. They also have a drive-thru for convenience with takeout orders. We got the brisket tray, ribs, a burger and fries (because why not!), and some of that fried chicken with baked beans, baked apples, hush puppies, and fried okra. I thought to get some banana pudding for dessert, but my wife felt I'd already ordered too much. Maybe next time...We also skipped the chopped BBQ this time because we are admittedly not big fans of the Lexington style BBQ that's popular in this area. I will say though that I liked the vinegar based BBQ sauce here so much that I would consider giving it a try next time to see if I like it better here than the other places I've tried so far. Hard to pick what the best thing was that we had, but the brisket and ribs were both simply great! Tender, ribs falling off the bones, brisket had nice char smoke flavor on the edges. No complaints there! The fried chicken was hot and juicy with a nice crispy batter. Very well executed. My only critique would be that it could have been a bit more flavorful; a little under seasoned. Great for dipping in some ranch or that BBQ sauce. I thought the sides were overall quite good. Hush puppies and fried okra were both fantastic. As good as it gets! The baked beans were fine, but I would've preferred more of a kick. The baked apples were nice but maybe could have been sweeter for my taste. I'm nit picking there though. They also have potato salad and other menu items we didn't get to this time. The burger and fries, unfortunately, were forgettable. I love burgers of course and feel compelled to order whenever they're on the menu, but this was sadly a throwaway item here. I would sadly skip next time. Patty was frozen, as were the fries, and the bun was a tad cold and stale. Oh well. That aside, we got a lot of food at what I feel was a fair price. They also have a fountain drink area, so get a beverage and stock up! I can't say I would wait in the 2 hour lines that formed for this place when they first reopened, but I will happily wait 20 minutes for my food to come out nice and fresh.

Suzzette K.

Yelp
I moved here to North Carolina 11 years ago and love the BBQ, this is my favorite out of the many I've had. A must go to when I'm on that side of town.

Lace F.

Yelp
My husband and I are not locals so we were not aware of the story behind this place and how missed it was. Well, we understand why now! I have to say they are definitely the best bbq I have had in the area. The brisket was fantastic, the ribs and chicken were great, the burger was our least favorite thing I'd say that was more of a throwaway and not what you should be ordering here, get the bbq items. All of the sides we had were delicious too, and their ranch was very nice. They have fountain soda which I always like being able to get my own drink. All in all just a great place and we are so happy to have discovered them! We will be back to try more!

Anita T.

Yelp
Wasn't the best experience. We went through their drive-thru which was convenient. They've got lost of options, chopped BBQ, brisket, fried fish, and fried chicken and a good number of side options. They are also known as Ms. Chicken, so I thought that meant the chicken had to be bomb. The problem is the mediocre flavor. If you're a local and this has been your go-to bbq place, then I'm sure you will review with a ouch of nostalgia. But we aren't from this area, and Mr. Barbecue wasn't the best example of NC Bbq flavor. My hubby's chopped sandwich was just okay. It looked bland and tasted so as well. My other family member, a lifelong NC resident, reports his brisket was "eh". I got a chicken strips salad. The salad greens and veggies were fresh. The Greek ( tasted like Italian) dressing was good as well. What wasn't great was the supposed star of the show, the chicken. Very pale colored fried chicken cut into pieces. They were a also a bit dry. Which made me my final mark of this entree a C. The hush puppies look like Cheetos, but were pretty decent when hit. The fries, ugh, do not get these! Very mushy inside, hard outside, and taste like they were cooked in week old oil. Overall it was below average. We won't try here again.

Amari L.

Yelp
The food is good, but the one boss dude I don't know he's super rude. He looked at me like he wanted to call me a Slur (I'm black) all the older people stare at you and act like it's the 1800s again not a pleasant eating experience but I guess the management brings in what it puts out, overall I would recommend for older people but if you're younger or just a little different then just go to McDonald's

Koury K.

Yelp
It is unreal for this restaurant to be rated that high! The ribs are inedible, very hard and heavily covered with bbq sauce, a cheap bbq sauce. Even Sam's club Bbq sauce is better! I am not sure if we came in at the wrong time, around 3pm, but all our food was Luke warm, nothing special and no flavor at all. The brisket was so hard and dry that you can hit it on a wall and it would bounce back to you :) Just check out the chopped bbq plate in the pictures; looks terrible and taste just like it looks. It was a huge disappointment.

Kingsley J.

Yelp
Very nice people and good service. Prices are iffy but other than that the food was great. I got ribs. Get you some. Lol

Susan M.

Yelp
Great food and BBQ was on point. Staff a slow but still better than most restaurants now.

Brian L.

Yelp
First time visiting the south, and my local chums said this was the place to stop for barbecue. Pulled brisket was very good, baked beans were very good, hush puppies I never quite got the point of, blame it on my Yankee blood. Also had a cheerwine, because you got two.

Marta T.

Yelp
I'm from Texas and our BBQ is beef, and I have tried food from different places and I always find coming back. I especially LOVED that their onion rings are hand battered. The flavor is consistently delicious.

Lori D.

Yelp
Ordered the BBQ sandwich combo which comes with a side and a drink for 7.99 .That price is amazing compared to where we've been going . The BBQ was tender and the slaw was amazing. The hushpuppies were great. Crinkled fries cooked to perfection.. The sauce is vinegar based but sweet. The sweet tea was very sweet and delicious. The staff was so nice and courteous . Plenty of seating indoors and outdoors. I can't wait to come back.

D. D.

Yelp
Wow..! Mr Barbecue what can I say first of all I'll say I should've stuck with my instincts and drove past . I pull in about 5:30 an go in nobody in line or In drive thru. I order 2 (6) bone rib dinners.. that took them the better part of 15 minutes to get together was the first red flag and when I said something about the wait I was told their on the grill.. what a crock !! Those were the coldest, driest ribs swimming in bbq sauce I ever had !! Hence the no refund policy on any purchase that you proudly print on your receipt!! This place should've stayed closed and for 42$ completely sucked!! The only reason I gave 2 stars is because the baked beans and potato salad were edible. So people pile in that steak house prices bbq restaurant at your own risk.!!! You've been warned !!!

Cody W.

Yelp
Amazing food with an even better vibe. Got to speak with the owner who is a neighborhood-conscious, smiling good karma type of guy. The prices are low for the type of food offered, too. Which is hard to find imo. There's some clean outdoor seating for those seeking some fresh air munching and They've got some motorcycle parking as well. Something for everyone! Definitely stop in to fill your stomach.

Jeremy C.

Yelp
It had literally been more than 20 years since i last stopped in at Mr Barbecue. I think it was 1997 as my sons were new borns (and someone made a disparaging remark about bringing children to a restaurant...but I digress). It was about what i remembered except for the addition of some digital menu boards(fancy fancy). We went with a 1/4 BBQ chicken fried okra, and fries. I went with a chopped sandwich and fries. I was actually brought a chopped plate but the kid was so apologetic about it that i was fine with it. Plus, I really don't need the added carbs anyway! It was pretty good, nothing that makes me think of earth shattering BBQ, but better than the fast food place that we were going to stop before I spotted Mr Barbecue on the way. Im going to do my best to make sure that I don't go another 21 years between visits.

T H.

Yelp
Checked out this local fave and it didn't disappoint. We got brisket which was so freaking good and sliced pork which was tasty as well. Mashed potatoes and gravy were nice and collard greens were chock full of flavor. Definitely recommend the brisket. Fast casual with a good staff of peeps.

Kiki K.

Yelp
Still my favorite Beef Brisket place and best Green Beans Everrrr. If only they would give me the recipe my family would love me forever

Jennie D.

Yelp
now I have to check orders for errors and they charge more for petty things. A cup of ice with bottled water is $1.79! When ordering a barbecue plate I received a tiny salsa container of slaw, (1/3 the amount of slaw) when ordering it on the side. There was a .50 charge for the container "on the side". What I really wanted was chopped barbecue plate with baked beans and slaw but slaw in separate container so I can reheat for second meal. Then a charge of 3.5% for using a credit card and notice of this charge taped to take out window on 3" by 5" paper saying save money use cash! Another larger notice of all other petty charges like .36 for salsa cup of barbecue sauce for sandwich. I am sympathetic to rising costs but this pettiness is ridiculous! I don't need the plastic utensils but napkins would be nice. Two plates without beverages is $23 is it really worth that? I've tried other Barbecue restaurants and none compare but these regular business expenses for take out meals is absurd! I called about the slaw situation and was told I could get extra slaw next time, no apology or small discount for error! Please train your employees better too, too many standing around talking to each other not doing anything!

Barbara K.

Yelp
Stopped in on a whim while traveling. Pleasant surprise ... friendly staff, good food and reasonably priced. Cleaner than most fast food restaurants I've been to. BBQ was tasty. Companion had grilled chicken salad with beautiful presentation and very fresh ingredients. Give this place a try and you will leave stuffed.

Mark A.

Yelp
Wow is all I can say. This is by far the best bbq I have ever had from a restaurant. The carolina bbq sauce is 100% on point and having never had red slaw, I absolutely engulfed it. Ill definitely be bringing that recipe back to the west coast with me. Thanks guys! I'll be back before I head home!

Stopped in for lunch, I ordered the chopped beef brisket with green beans and bbq slaw as my sides along with hushpuppies, the lady behind the counter that took my order told me to have a seat and they would bring it to the table. I took a seat and the lady that took my order shortly thereafter delivered a tray with a plate of chopped brisket with fries, baked beans and hushpuppies lol, I didn't make a big deal out of it since I like fries and baked beans too...so I had fries and baked beans with my brisket. The chopped brisket was awesome, had a great smoky flavor with a sweet smoky bbq sauce on top, very very good. The fries were nothing spectacular, crinkle cut and unsalted, the baked beans were ok and the hushpuppies were very good. I'll have stop back by and try the bbq and get some more of the chopped beef.

Yelp
My family recently visited Mr. BBQ and it did not disappoint. Food was good and as well as the hospitality. I would highly recommend Mr. BBQ to anyone.

Yelp
Best BBQ Ribs ever!!! Good portions, Husband never eats potato salad but definitely enjoyed it from here! Prices have gone up but would say it's well worth it.

Yelp
Same great bbq as always!!! Moms day off with hushpuppies was fantastic!! The Long wait in the drive through was well worth it.

Yelp
Well let me start by saying the food that I wanted (fried chicken and mashed potatoes) was sold out when we arrived. So I got ribs and green beans instead. The ribs were awful in my option and my wife did not enjoy her BBQ. I do not necessarily won't to say we will not try them again lol but if we do I'm surly not getting the ribs haha.

Yelp
Ok flat out, this place is amazing! If you don't add this place to your bucket list, you're CRAZY! So worth the price, the food is just amazing!

Yelp
Dinner was okay last night. The staff who took my order were very friendly and efficient. They made sure you did not have to wait a while to get your plate out. We tried the chopped plate and the fried chicken dinner. We went with the friend chicken after all the stellar reviews for it here. Unfortunately, it was a bit disappointing. The skin wasn't really all that crispy and was actually a bit soggy. I'm thinking the fried chicken was just having an off night there. The chopped plate was really good and I would definitely get that again. The pork was moist and I think they put just the right amount of sauce on it. The hush puppies were different than what I am use to but I actually really liked them. They have a thinner crust which I enjoyed. If you are looking for quick bbq eats this is the place to go! I would just recommend sticking with the pork dishes.

Yelp
I am single, use the drive through and usually purchase two pounds of brisket and a side once a month. This lasts me for several meals. The food is always good and the service is fast. Even in the evening, the drive through line is not long and it moves fast. The price has gone up substantially in the last six months, just like all at all restaurants, but I still feel the quality makes it worth my while.

Yelp
Really great BBQ and brisket! Hush puppies and the red slaw are so so good, thank you Mr. Barbecue for always providing fresh food!!

Yelp
Decided to come here for lunch last minute. The food was overall decent and the line was not worth the.. taste. We waited about a good 40 minutes. Also, there was a order mishaps.

Yelp
There is a reason that Mr. Barbecue has been around since the 60's. In my opinion, this is some of the best Western NC style BBQ you can get in Winston. I always preface by saying that I am an Eastern style guy, but for what it is, this Western style gets it right. I would definitely recommend this place over Little Richards (I know it's sinful to say in Winston, but I think Little Richard's is overrated). You know that you are in for some good BBQ as soon as you walk up to a place. At Mr. Barbecue you walk up to stacks of chopped wood and the smell of hickory burning. This is the kind of place where you order up at the counter and they bring your food out on a tray. The people working the registers are always friendly, and the food normally comes out quickly, even when they are busy. I've had a couple of options here. The chopped BBQ is very good. It is not fatty as I've found with some other Western Style places, and you can tell that they still use actual wood. This gives it the nice hickory smoked flavor. The sauce that they offer here is kind of in between an Eastern and Western sauce. It is runnier like a vinegar based sauce, but doesn't have any red peppers in it. It won't blow you away with spice or flavor, but it is a good addition to the meat. Their sides are all pretty good. The hushpuppies are probably my favorite. Very crunchy with lots of flavor. If you are choosing between the hushpuppies and fries, go with the puppies. The fries are mediocre. They serve both styles of slaw. I normally don't like BBQ slaw, but the offering here is pretty good. The potato salad is good. It has less mustard than most, but they add a lot of relish or pickle juice to it that gives it an interesting flavor. I had the fried chicken the other day and was disappointed. The chicken was nice and juicy, but the skin was not crunchy at all and kind of soggy. I would definitely stick with the BBQ. Mr. Barbecue has earned it's place in Winston food lore. If you are looking for some good Western style BBQ served in a place with a lot of local history, then Mr. Barbecue is your place.

Yelp
I visited Mr. Barbecue a little before noon on a Saturday. They were relatively busy with some people in the dining room and plenty of to-go orders. There isn't a lot of room to line-up before someone takes your order so you just have to linger around. I ordered the chopped plate and a hot dog with chili, slaw, and mustard. The food was ready pretty quickly. The BBQ came drenched in dip (sauce) and was really moist. The BBQ slaw was a bit sweet for my liking but wasn't bad by any means. The fries and hushpuppies were both tasty as well. The hot dog was delicious. The chili is pretty dry and I was worried but it had tons of flavor. The cole slaw and mustard paired perfectly. I'll definitely be back to Mr. Barbecue in the future.

Yelp
People who eat here just don't understand good barbecue. It's well worth driving a few miles down the road into Davidson County. This place has small portions and high prices on mediocre food. Every barbecue restaurant I know in Davidson County has better food, larger portions, and lower prices. Skip this place.

Yelp
The pulled pork BBQ salad is my jam. I mix the ranch and BBQ sauce for salad dressing. The BBQ portion is large enough that I always have some to take home.

Yelp
My 4 stars are just for the hush puppies. In case you don't know, Mr. Barbecue is an institution in Winston Salem. We went here for many years & my sister still declares these hush puppies the gold standard by which all others are compared to. I have to say I feel the same way. If you are a fan of BBQ, you will also like getting it here since my family got it from here for Friday night dinners for years. One thing you should know: this is NOT a fancy place. Not by a long shot. If you're looking for a down home, casual atmosphere, you'll be just fine. If you want pretension or fancy decor, go elsewhere. I had a grilled chicken here with ketchup that was pretty good. At first they got my sandwich wrong but the girl let me get a free Cheerwine while I waited (I offered to pay but she refused). Cheerwine is another Southern institution that you can't get in other parts of the country. Seriously, if you want hush puppies this is the gold standard. I don't care what other places in Lexington claim, these are the best hush puppies in the Piedmont Triad area.

Yelp
Do you remember the radio commercial for Mr. Barbecue? "Eat Mr. Barbecue, it's good for you. Eat Mr. Barbecue, it's fun to chew! Hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs & fries; the best doggone barbecue and taste-tempting pies." Jerry and I met friends for dinner at Mr. Barbecue prior to going to a Marketplace Cinemas movie. My friend had the BBQ Salad with iceberg lettuce, cherry tomatoes, red onion, green peppers. The chopped BBQ that topped the salad was tender and lean with little bits of bark. I had the rib plate with hushpuppies, potato salad, and white slaw. The half-rack of already separated ribs had a nice outer bark and fell off the bone when I went to take a bite. However, they were too fatty for my tastes. The potato salad had a mayonnaise dressing with a bit of mustard and sweet pickle. I liked the oblong hushpuppies with flecks of black pepper in the cornmeal. Jerry had the ¼ BBQ chicken with hushpuppies, BBQ slaw, and fries. The side of dip was sweet and tangy with plenty of black pepper. I particularly enjoyed tearing off some of the juicy breast meat and dunking it in the sauce. Jerry ordered a pint of chicken livers for us to share. They were cooked to order with a well-seasoned crunchy outside and a tender, moist center. This was our favorite dish of the evening. On Friday, Jerry and I returned for lunch. The restaurant was hopping with customers arriving as soon as a table opened up. Everything seemed to flow well; we didn't notice any bottlenecks. I ordered the daily special, two hot dogs all the way with fries and iced tea. The hotdogs were simply prepared and perfect. The bun was toasted and the dogs were grilled on a flat-top then loaded with chili, white slaw, mustard, and chopped onion. I think the hotdogs fixed all the way are the best item on the menu. Jerry had the 3-piece fried chicken dinner with hushpuppies, mashed potatoes & gravy, and baked beans. The piping hot chicken (breast, thigh and leg) was lightly floured, fried crisp, and was so moist juices dripped out as we tore into the chicken. The homemade cream style mashed potatoes were topped with brown gravy. The baked beans had onion, green pepper, and bacon in them. I knew we would be taking food home with us, but I had to try the Carolina Hot Legs. This dish took their full-sized fried chicken legs and tossed them in a Texas Pete wing sauce. We both liked the extra zing added by the hot sauce. If you order the fried chicken, it will take 10-15 minutes to prepare, and the counter person will bring it to your table when it's ready. Mr. Barbecue has thrived for over fifty years, and we see why customers continue to return time after time. Yelp
My go-to place when I crave Lexington style BBQ and am too lazy to drive to Little Richards. Located on that sad looking stretch of Peter's Creek, it's hard to miss the big pig on the sign. The cue is good, a notch below Little Richards, but a notch better than Hill's. The pups are just okay, and the sauce and slaw are decent. They also offer BBQ beef and will chop your cue three ways: regular, course, or sliced. The fried chicken is pretty good too and a nice option if not in the mood for cue. Just allow a few extra minutes. Absolutely nothing wrong with the cue here so please give it a try. Oh, and the service is usually great too. Southern and friendly. 4 stars
