Little known hole-in-the-wall seafood restaurant is a neighborhood favorite. This is some of the most delicious fried catfish, cod, whitefish, and shrimp I've ever had. I hear the lobster is amazing too.

I’ve been wanting to try this place for weeks. Tried it today and it was definitely worth the wait! The fish was well seasoned with the perfect crunch; literally fried to perfection!! I found the atmosphere to be very comforting and welcoming. The gumbo was good, but not spectacular. The prices were super reasonable (especially for the quality of the food) 10/10 for me, the fish exceeded my expectations!!

I’ve placed two online orders with this business, and unfortunately, both experiences have been disappointing. On both occasions, I ordered the White Fish Dinner, which is advertised as three pieces of fried swai with two sides. However, I only received two pieces each time. Today, I also ordered a 4-piece wing meal with two sides and received only three wings. Attempts to contact the restaurant by phone went unanswered, and voicemail was the only option available, and you cannot even leave a message even though the location did not appear to be busy at the time. As a customer picking up food during a limited lunch break, it’s frustrating to have to consider returning to resolve order issues. I hope the business can improve its order accuracy and customer service responsiveness moving forward. Additionally, I would encourage a review of the side dish options to enhance the overall dining experience. While I’ve made an effort to support this Black-owned business, I’m disappointed that these issues have remained consistent. I hope there are improvements in the future for other customers. This was my last time supporting.

Google
This is one of the ol' hole in the wall restaurants, which i am particularly fond of. It was a great find, food was great, staff tried extremely hard to make up for the lack of staff when it became busy. Overall give it a try if you love fried catfish. They also serve some other Cajun dishes like gumbo and boudin balls. Would visit again.

Felt like my grandma's house. Everyone was so hospitable and friendly. The nice lady at the register was so helpful and accommodating. It was my first time, so she answered my questions patiently, and she was so kind. The food was 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 I even got a slice of pound cake that I ate while I was waiting on my food and it was so moist and delicious. I had catfish, shrimp, collards, and red beans, and EVERYTHING WAS PERFECT!! I WILL BE BACK with stretchier pants next time 🤣

Google
Our East Garland Church decided to stop by & try this place out before heading back to the Dallas Metroplex. The food was fine. The drinks taste great, but aren't something one can have often. The atmosphere was peaceful & relaxing. The music was a blast from the past for us 50+ people.

Google
Food was good overall, however, the cashier/server was very rude, had an attitude was placed order at 11:59am didn’t get order until 1:55pm mid wait for long wait on order I ask if I can get one of the 3 drink order due to my grandmother being diabetic she rolled her eye with the lady waiting in line saying “I will give you the drink with your order” I told her no she need something while we wait for order cashier repeat the same thing trying to take the lady in line she the lady in line told her to get the drink first then she will order had to say thank you to lady but cashier is complete rude having to wait 40+ minutes for food is crazy with out any drink for diabetic. Overall good food probably won’t come back with my grandmother.

Google
just great all-around. I got the 2 wing & 2 catfish strips plate with gumbo, fries, & hush puppies. my wife got the veggie plate with okra, hush puppies, greens, and mac & cheese. we shared the cornbread muffins & a large cup of red kool aid. all the food tasted good! it was ready when expected (about 30 mins after we put in a to-go order). the food wasn’t greasy, which is great. they had a great option for vegetarians! 10/10 recommend.

Yelp
Simple, unpretentious restaurant with delicious fried seafood. All the sides are good too. Sauces and salad dressings are from packets.

Yelp
Love this place. The gizzards are parboiled for flavor but not too much. They've still got lots of chaw left in them.

Yelp
Title: Exceptional Seafood Delight at Mr. Catfish My recent visit to Mr. Catfish left me thoroughly impressed with their impeccable seafood offerings. Opting for the three-piece catfish and three-piece shrimp combo with hush puppies, I was delighted to find that every component was fried to perfection. The seafood was seasoned masterfully and served piping hot, ensuring a delicious and satisfying meal from start to finish. Accompanying my meal was a refreshing large lemonade, which proved to be the perfect complement to the savory flavors of the seafood. The cleanliness of the establishment was evident, and the customer service was nothing short of wonderful, adding to the overall positive dining experience. One standout component of the meal was the coleslaw, which exceeded my expectations with its fresh and flavorful taste. It served as the perfect palate cleanser between bites of the delectable fried seafood. Overall, my experience at Mr. Catfish was exceptional, and I eagerly anticipate my next visit. With top-notch food, excellent customer service, and a clean and inviting atmosphere, Mr. Catfish has secured its place as a favorite dining destination. Whether you're craving perfectly fried seafood or simply seeking a memorable dining experience, Mr. Catfish delivers on all fronts.

Yelp
I was not pleased with the service. It took over 45 minutes for us to get our order. No explanation, if you have time to spare come here otherwise go to Catfish Parlor

Yelp
Great food; good service; good DJ 70s music on Friday nights with dance floor and bar. Friendly staff. We celebrated a birthday and had a wonderful time.

Yelp
This place has some of the most flavorful southern catfish in the city! They've been around for as long as I remember and I totally understand why. Everything here is cooked fresh to order so you will wait about 15-20 minutes for your food and it's worth the wait! This is that granny's fried fish okay?!! The chicken is equally delicious! It's seasoned to the max! They've got bomb kool aid too! The service is friendly and the patrons are as well. They've got great prices and the portions are definitely Texas sized! Go get you a plate, you will not regret it!

Yelp
After getting my Covid booster, the old belly was feeling a bit neglected so I stopped in at Mr Catfish to check it out my lite afternoon snack consisted of 3 catfish filets, 3 shrimp, small gumbo, red beans and rice, collard greens and an orginal margarita and for digestive purposes oh, and I had to throw in a strawberry margarita for good measure and last but not least, I threw in a watermelon margarita for extra good measure. Davia was an extraordinary server and believe me, I shall return with all due despatch.

Yelp
This place has been a hidden gem settled into the fabric of East Austin for over 15 years! Their menu is amazing southern cajun comfort food that is ALWAYS consistent in taste, quality, quantity.

Yelp
Good fish. The gumbo is great and good lunch specials. Consistent taste in the fish. Never fails

Tanya H.

Yelp
I will not go back here again. First time and last time.If you got time to wait this is the place cause we waited 40 minutes they really do need help But if the food wasn't spicy it was too too salty.
google avatar

Ralph S.

Yelp
I haven't been here in several years since it was Spring Hill Catfish. The catfish is still delicious. I had some gumbo and was really good. The lunch portions are really generous.

Mildred M.

Yelp
Big catfish on point, friend chicken wings and fries the bomb. The service is good the bartenders really nice. Live blues band on Mondays look them up on facebook to find out what's happening daily. But the best lil black own business on this Eastside's of town stop by you want be disappointed.

Yelp
Catfish is amazing!!! Best I've ever tasted. Music is good if you like old school music

Yelp
Delicious catfish and shrimp! Fried to perfection! Fried okra and red beans and rice are a great sides. Peanut butter crunch takes you back to the elementary cafeteria. Great place to eat!

Mark P.

Yelp
Absolutely loved it!!! Tasted great and I love the vibe! I'm going back for sure !! What else do I need to say to reach the 85 characters yelp wants. There, Fixed!!

Yelp
Average, this place is inconsistent with food. Some time you go the food is good and sometimes you go it bad. The food is too high to wonder if they will get it right or not.

Ashley W.

Yelp
Very disappointed that the hours of operation say they are open until 9 but when I arrived at 7:54pm the doors were locked. Extremely unprofessional.

M P.

Yelp
Fish was fried with just the right level of seasoning crispiness. I will definitely be back.

Yelp
Ive been coming here a few years now ,the Food is always freshly cook to order , the place could use a touch up for sure!! ..if you just taking out call 1 hour ahead the wait is a long, but the food is good its worth a try & the wait!.

Christy G.

Yelp
I gave 1 star only for being open. First of all, no no to frozen/fake tasting shrimp. Food was salty. Service was slow and to think, nobody was in the restaurant. One of our orders was the 3+3 Dinner ... three shrimp and three chicken tenders. When our order finally arrived we got fish instead of chicken. We went to the counter to let them know. The lady was like, can I see your receipt while the gentleman who took our order never left his phone although he was talking to IT about the ONLY register that was working, because ... it wasn't working. He knew what we ordered and gave a look to his staff as if 'oh y'all messed up'. My husband said - uhm, ok do you want the fish back. No ... we waited for our chicken but imagine that, we never got it. I even asked the young lady who was in the bar area about our food and she was like, oh I don't know. Wait, what?? Unprofessional. Unacceptably slow service. That was our first visit there and do know, there will not be a second visit. Get it together.

Tanya H.

Yelp
My first time here was very excited I like fish and soul food sides. But this was not the place for me and my mate it's was a line ok fine. There was only one lady who was working in front she was taking orders and bartending making drinks and only one cook in the back. They were extremely bagged up and a young lady came out the back like she didn't won't to work SAD!!!! So we make it to register we excited so we ordered multiple things. Spent 50 dollars no problem now it's the wait almost 40 minutes to get food, kool aid was great!!! Get back to our hotel now here's the problem fish was dark had a bad grease after taste, Mac and cheese had too much white pepper to spicy AND THE PORK CHOP WAS SO SALTY IF YOU DONT HAVE BLOOD PRESSURE MEDICINE YOU WOULD NEED THE ER THAT WILL SEND SOME ONE TO GLORY. So for me I had a bad experience I will never try again. They need Help!!! O YEAH I ALMOST FORGOT I THOUGHT RED BEANS AND RICE HAD SAUSAGE THIS WAS PINTO BEANS AND RICE NOT WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR ....

Anne W.

Yelp
Always friendly, food is always good. Boy, do they especially get the fried stuff right! Not greasy.

Andrea M.

Yelp
I don't know what happened, we really wanted to like it because there are so many good reviews. We got the platter with the catfish, oysters, shrimp, and chicken. We bought okra, boudin, hush puppies, corn bread, collard greens, and red beans and rice for everyone to try. All the sides were good for the most part, but they didn't season our seafood or meat AT ALL. It was just fried. kind of disappointing. We just had to cover it in hot sauce. The only other dip they offered there was ketchup. Not even a tarter sauce or something. Oh well. I liked the collard greens best.

Yelp
Come here if you want the ultimate east austin experience! Long waits and sweet kool-aid! I've been going here since it was on Springdale, the fry fish crispy, don't skemp out on any of the sides. They also are carrying one of the best recipes of gumbo you can get in the city! But don't think you gon be in and out!!!
google avatar

Jin L.

Yelp
Pretty good fried catfish! The breading was really nice and crispy. With the 3 piece special, you also get 2 sides. I got the Mac & cheese and fried okra. Fried okra was fried perfectly. Mac & cheese had some spice to it, which I didn't expect but found to be really appetizing! This meal is also super affordable and filling I also got it to go and everything held up during the 15-20 min drive back home!

Shauna O.

Yelp
They do fried chicken & seafood right! Not soggy. Not greasy. Not salty. I got the 3 pc tender and 3 piece catfish meal w/ red beans and rice and hush puppies (the yummiest I've ever had! --moist on the inside and crispy on the outside). The meal was crispy, perfectly seasoned, generously portioned, and for a reasonable price. If you're looking for good soul food in Austin. Look no further! Mr Catfish did not disappoint!

Mike R.

Yelp
Everything was great here. Had a little wait but I understood because it takes time to make good fresh catfish.

Dalya H.

Yelp
I'm in Love with the catfish plate and the potato salad here was wonderful. The staff was great.

Bodie L.

Yelp
Went there for my first time yesterday-exploring new places for Seafood. I paid a lot of $ for the mixed fried shrimp and oyster platter,it was about $17, and I added a $4 catfish filet-chose fries and hush puppies for sides. Immediately I could tell the shrimp were prepackaged frozen-no taste what so ever-the tiny oysters had a very bad odor-the tiny 4 hush puppies were good-frozen crinkle cut fries with no flavor-the best was the catfish-I could tell it had a homemade seasoned crust and tastes fresh-I doubt if I will ever go back-if only for the catfish-I'll stay with Captain Bennys or Catfish Parlor!

Lori T.

Yelp
Love the food, good service. A definite go to for the catfish, fried oysters & boudin balls. Yummy!
google avatar

Chris G.

Yelp
Got the 6pc catfish strip dinner with fries and okra as my sides. Everything was good. Catfish cooked to perfection and nicely seasoned. My sides also spot on. I also had a cup of koolaid and yaaaasssss taste just like it was suppose to. Like suga water okaaaaaay.....! I'll be back lol

Santos R.

Yelp
This is my seafood spot no complaints food is fresh service is good my go to is 6 shrimp 3x3 catfish and tenders fries and small gumbo I eat half of it around noon and the rest of it for dinner yes its around $24 but it's worth it only complaint it takes between 15/30 min but I recommend it

Phillip G.

Yelp
Food was ready for pickup. Was even told it be a while.. only wish they had a to go pick up area. Had to wait in line for 15 mins... other than that food was great.

Royce R.

Yelp
Got the catfish with a gumbo side. The gumbo was perfect. The catfish was good but could use more seasoning. Should've bought the Cajun seasoning they offer
google avatar

Waymon S.

Yelp
Food was great I got whole catfish, rice and beans. Great service I will definitely come again. Nothing like this I Tyler Tx Waymon

Alesia B.

Yelp
Food is okay. They use to be really good. The wings taste like they were fried with dirty grease. The catfish strips were really thick. They need to update their online ordering system and the phone lines are either a fast busy or goes to vm
google avatar

Wes C.

Yelp
Food was really flavorful different types of fry from the fish, shrimp, catfish, strips and oysters. Catfish was really good.

Kristianna G.

Yelp
12/10! You do have to wait a little but it's because they cook it all fresh, food is amazing & the staff is so helpful & nice. Definitely will be back soon.

Yelp
Hot Catfish, Tilapia, wings, and tenders with all the sides along with Kool aid and cornbread and deserts can't beat it. Nice atmosphere with old school music and the bar. Just hit different..
google avatar

Deryk D.

Yelp
Very good fried fish. Probably the top 3 restaurant prepared catfish I've ever had. Batter was crispy and inside was hot, moist and flaky. Fried okra was fresh and perfectly fried. Mr Catfish would have received 5 stars had it not been for the extremely cold serving of fries. Not a terrible faux pas, just not great. But the star of the show was the fish. Crispy, delicious, and piping hot.
google avatar

Sharonda G.

Yelp
Hands down the best food in Austin. Their only draw back is they don't have a delivery service
google avatar

Doneisha F.

Yelp
It took forever (30 minutes to be exact) to get someone to answer the phone to order to go. Once I got there checking out was quick because there wasn't many people there. I ordered the 3 catfish and 3 shrimp. I ordered the gumbo and red beans and rice for the two sides. To my surprise I received four pieces of fish and three plumply breaded shrimp. They were seasoned very well. I am a gumbo snob because of growing up near Louisiana and the gumbo to my surprise had a good tasting brown roux and lots of shrimp, sausage, and chicken. They were redeeming themselves until I got to the red beans and rice which was bland. Next time I will be ordering double gumbo or collard greens. But overall happy and will be back to try the Sunday brunch.

Yelp
This is me and my friend first time here at MR Catfish in Austin TX and I'm going to start with the service as the women where friendly and helpful in as far what too order, The food that we both had was fantastic, I had the catfish strips with shrimp and Mac and cheese and gumbo, and it was all very well made and tasted delicious. The bonus was that we found out that they just started playing music as it was karaoke night so we might get to hear some great Austin TX singers. Anyway this is a great place to get some amazing catfish and depending on the night some great Music.
google avatar

James H.

Yelp
Great fish, and wings... service is absolutely horrible!! It never gets any better. At the Urban Music Fest it takes 35-45 minutes for a simple catfish order. Insane!!
google avatar

Sommer D.

Yelp
Fresh fish! Perfectly seasoned flaky catfish cornmeal fried to perfection! Mac n cheese, greens and beans & rice give you a southern food experience that you can only find in the south! Authentic!

Yelp
We love eating here. Enjoy the fish and collard greens. This is one place I like coming for the collard greens and the peanut butter crunch....

Yelp
Imagine my excitement when I see a sign on this business saying that they have a salad bar at lunch time! For those of you who don't work in this area, let me tell you there isn't many healthy choices within a couple minute proximity! It's either fast food, fast food or oh you guessed it fast food! I made a point to not pack a lunch the next day and head here! I walk in and it's pretty quiet but, a flood of people came in behind me. This looks promising I thought to myself and at that moment my eyes make contact with an empty and not in use salad bar. My hopes and dreams of a healthy lunch went up in flames. I tried to make the best of it and ordered overpriced chicken fingers with red beans and rice and coleslaw. It also came with a roll but, I am not much of a roll person. You get your receipt then your cup to fill at the soda machine. Then you go over and show your ticket to the woman behind the counter. There were all these sides and people were ordering from her too and it was all confusing. If I had known they had all those side options I would have opted to just make a meal out of sides! From there I went and sat down at the table to wait for my order. hmmm 20 minutes later I go up to inquire and the woman was a little snotty and was like they are cooking. I felt like saying I'm sorry did you slaughter the chicken out back and bread them yourself because I think not. I am pretty sure they forgot about me and after 30 minutes I had my to go lunch! The chicken was ok, just ok. Also, make sure you ask for some type of dipping sauce because they will only give you ketchup. I'm not really sure how many people dip chicken in ketchup but, I had to because my tenders were so dry. I am not even going to begin to dissect all the problems with the coleslaw. The only part that was good was the red beans and rice surprisingly! My recommendation would be not to advertise a salad bar if you don't have one or aren't operating it when the sign says.
