22 Outstanding Halal Spots in New York

"Amani group founders Jashim Ullah and Razib Hasan have partnered with chef Chang Bihsiang, to open Mr. Chang in Astoria, with a menu of kung pao chicken, chile lamb, and Beijing duck (Peking duck) — all halal." - Caroline Shin, Robert Sietsema

The ambiance was nice and so were the staffs. The food was good but once you have few bites it feels salty due to the amount of M.S.G they use. Food does not taste as good after that. We ordered the house special fried rice, house special lo mein, szechuan shrimp and chilli wonton . They gave us free boba tea with our order. The boba tea was the best out of all the items we had.

100% Halal and Delicious!! We had the vegetable spring rolls, duck bao bun, sesame chicken vegetable fried rice and the beef fried dumplings. The food was hot and fresh, the service was really good, and the bathroom is very clean. The only thing was we were told to talk lower because apparently we were loud since it’s a small space I can understand. Either way 10/10 for the food! Def recommend it if you’re in the area.

Mr. Chang's lived up to all the positive reviews I heard. I haven't had halal chinese like this in a while. Let's start with the spicy chicken wings. They were absolutely fantastic, with a perfect balance between spice and crispiness, and it paired amazingly with the fried rice. The chef's special szcehuan chicken was full of flavor as well. Beyond the amazing food, I was impressed by the friendly and efficient staff. They provided attentive service, ensuring that our dining experience was enjoyable from start to finish. Additionally, Mr. Chang's offers a well-maintained interior. The ambiance is inviting and the restaurant is spacious enough to bring your friends and family. Overall, I highly recommend checking out Mr. Chang's, if you are looking for an authentic chinese food experience.

The food was very tasty and we were given big portions so you definitely get what you pay for. I got the chili wontons, chicken lo mein, and strawberry lemonade mocktail. The chili wontons were so delicious and so spicy (which I love). And the strawberry lemonade mocktail was unbelievably good and addictive. I for sure want to try out more mocktail drinks next time. The atmosphere and service were very exceptional. I will definitely be coming back here again!

Tried this spot beginning of May. They are halal which is wonderful. I had the steamed beef dumplings & General Tsao chicken & scallion pancakes. All 3 dishes were super flavorful, succulent & delicious. Dumplings & gen tsao were piping hot when they brought it out to my table which I love. The interior decor is nice & the restaurant was peacefully quiet on a Monday evening when I went. I will definitely be coming back soon.

🚨 Can you handle the Heat ? 🌶️ 🔥 📍 Mr. Chang Halal Chinese 25-45 Steinway St, Queens, NY 11103 📸 Mala Wings 🔥 Dragon & phoneix 🐉 Half Pecking Duck 🦆 Chilli Chicken 🍗 Duck Bao Buns 😋 Mala Wok (seafood) 🥘 Thai Tea Bobba Float 🧋 House Special Fried Rice 🍚 Chilli Wonton 🌶️ Review: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ (4 out of 5 Stars) If you can handle the heat, you gotta try the Mala Wings. They are the perfect combination of spicy and crispy. Definitely eat this when it’s hot. The Mala Wok (Seafood), a fiery fusion of Sichuan peppercorns, chili peppers, shrimp, fish, tofu, quail eggs, rice cake, corn and veggies, wok-tossed to perfection served on a wok was amazing. The corn was a unique addition, but worked really well with everything else. It was my first time trying duck; all I gotta say is not bad. After enjoying the food, the bubble tea is a nice way to cool down. Overall, the restaurant has a nice ambiance and the food is good. I loved seeing the pictures of Bruce Lee on the wall. As always Don’t forget to say Bismillah and Alhamdulilah for everything 😊

While making my way around Steinway Street in Astoria Queens I came across something I've never experienced before which was a restaurant that says Halal Chinese. I never seen a halal Chinese spot before so I decided I'd step in to see what's going on. The outside wasn't so decorative which is cool but the awning was very nicely decorated. When I stepped in it was a nice quiet place not many people were there at all. I was greeted by two young ladies and they took my order. I ordered the Mongolian chicken. Once the order was placed I didn't wait very long I'll say maybe about 8 minutes and the food was ready hot steamy and very flavorful the only problem is it wasoily and salty. I believe because of the source I'm not sure if they use soy sauce in it but it was a bit salty for me. I believe that I will order it again and inform them if they're using soy sauce is no reason for salt and if they are using soy sauce then next time use less. But the chicken tasted wonderful. I've had Mongolian chicken before and the chicken was very rubbery from another restaurant in Chinatown. The scallions were sliced to perfection as well as the purple onions. The rice was fluffy but not what I was used to from some of the place I've been. This is a new restaurant in the strip and it makes for a pleasant place to stop for a bite to eat if you want to change from the shawarma and gyros usually offered on the block. I think I will make another visit and try another dish. I will get back with you with another review. Good job on the eats.

This is my 1st experience in this Restaurant...and i wish i can say something nice about this place from bad service to bad food and worst presentation of food. This is the only place serve Halal Duck in NYC. I was quiet happy to try one untill they tell me they out of it. I order Chilli Beef and Mangolian chicken alone with hot n Sour soup instead. In addition i order couple of juice tea with light ice. After few minutes of wait they serve food...both main Entrees were soaked in oil badly, Soup was extremely Sour...drinks were full of ice and they gave dessert plates instead of regular serving plates. I address these issues to server,he said sorry and get vanished. Me and wifey gave up after few bites. I pay the bill and walk out...Lady on register nice enough not to charge for drinks. One and done...not going back.

Yelp
Mr Chang made my day on MLK. Repeat that 5 times out loud ... I really enjoyed this place. The vibe inside was pretty chill, decor was nice , the place was clean but y'all know why people go here and it ain't for the chicken (the chili wontons were the bomb though). We came for the duck and it did not disappoint ! You always hear that it's all in that duck skin and if a chef can get that cookie crunch out of that skin it's definitely THE spot to go to. But I won't lie , I didn't get a cookie crunch out of the skin, but it still had a light crunch to it. The meat was tender, and the meat had a good marinade/ Asian brine of some sort. We ordered the half Peking duck , the Mongolian Lamb and the Chow Fun special (with 3 meats). First off we ordered the large and when it was served it was "appeared" to be less, but as we were getting through the food, I can tell, the portions were just right and on point. Everything was portioned out well , and between 3 men, we finished everything with space for some Yemeni chai (they didn't serve that there but it was a few doors down). Between the ambiance, the service (which was A+) and the food , not to mention the promptness of getting our orders, they earned all 5 stars. No disappointment here. This place is not a one hit wonder so you'll want to come back for more...I know I will *2 thumbs up PS: no need for the pictures, just go there and enjoy the food while it's hot.

Yelp
The only reason I came here was because they have halal duck, so my partner can try it. Unfortunately, everything is overpriced for mediocre Chinese takeout quality. The chicken wings and mocktails were decent, but everything else was a disappointment. First off, halal Peking duck is their selling point otherwise they might as well be a Chinese takeout restaurant. However, it is expensive and no where near what Peking duck is supposed to be, not even roast duck quality. What they gave me was pathetic. It was clearly old and dried out. No moist meat or oil to be found. I should have given it back. The spicy lamb was not spicy at all, a bit bland, and the meat didn't taste fresh. Go elsewhere for Chinese takeout food. The duck is not worth it.

Yelp
Ordered from Mr. Chang for halal Chinese and I hate to say it, but it wasn't good. The kung pao chicken was breaded, which was a strange choice, but also lacked salt and flavor. The hot and sour soup was ok, but the wonton soup had a weird flavor to the wontons. The shrimp egg roll had a single shrimp in it. Unfortunately probably better to get your halal Chinese (or any Chinese) elsewhere.

Yelp
Was excited for this food as it's another halal option that is in deliverable radius to my home, as Fatima's halal was closed on a Tuesday so I gave this place a shot. Thoroughly disappointed, don't waste your time or money. Bar none the worst Chinese food I've ever had in my life. Too bad I made a huge family order now I don't know what to do with all this bland soggy "food".

Yelp
Once again - the restaurant group behind popular halal eateries has cut their portions and upped their prices. They capitalize on their cornered market and lack of options. If you need to eat halal meat - you'll be going back out of necessity. If you don't need halal meat - go to any other Chinese spot and get the same standard food for a fraction of the price. Sadly, they don't even offer the lunch special on Friday. Friday is often the busiest lunch service for the Muslim/halal places on Steinway - great day to squeeze people for the same plate of food for double the price.

Yelp
Ordered: Mala Wings (~$17) Jumbo Shrimp with Garlic Sauce (~$16): substitute white rice for plain fried rice (+$2) Beef with Broccoli (~$16): substitute white rice for plain fried rice (+$2) Aya's take: I'm a sucker for American Chinese food and so glad there's finally a good halal option in Astoria. We started off with the Mala Wings which are crisped to perfection, seasoned incredibly well, and topped with tons of chilis. It actually wasn't too spicy and you can definitely add/remove the chilis to your liking. My only complaint is the menu says 6pcs and we only received 4. The Jumbo Shrimp with Garlic Sauce & Beef with Broccoli both tasted pretty solid! Their garlic sauce is on point and super flavorful. The beef itself wasn't seasoned and coating it with the sauce just wasn't enough to give it flavor. The plain fried rice is a well worth upgrade! I wish there was a lo mein option for the upgrade as sometimes you just want a small portion to go with your dish. All in all, Mr. Chang impressed me and I would totally come back again!

Yelp
Had high hopes for this place, but did not deliver. Portion sizes were nice and I liked that they gave options for small and large - Scallion Pancakes were over fried so that you couldn't taste the pancakes & did not have any flavor - House Special Lo Mein was fine but the chicken tasted old - Mongolian Beef was ok, but it had way too much onions in it and some of it tasted expired - Chicken & Broccoli was ok, nothing special but nothing to complain about Would not revisit

Yelp
Was so excited to find a halal Chinese spot in queens serving Peking duck that we knew we had to check it out! We ordered a number of things but favorites were the Peking duck, schezuan chicken, Lo mein and their milk tea!!! Soo good! However we did not really enjoy the fried rice, mala wings, pepper beef and few other items we felt lacked flavor but I'd still definitely recommend checking out for the duck and other favorites mentioned!

Yelp
I came here last night with my friends and we ordered a few dishes to share. We had their beef lo mein, the whole duck with the pancake which cost $74.99 it was good but definitely not worth price tag. Other dishes we ordered was their mapo tofu, ginger scallion fish was delicious, Mongolian beef, and a few other dishes. General Tso chicken was tasty and those pieces was definitely larger compared to other spot. Service was friendly.

Yelp
Overall good fast food style Chinese food. The difference would be that they offer boba drinks and Peking Duck. The serving sizes are small though. Definitely not getting your typical Chinese restaurant serving sizes. But the quality is excellent. I would go back to try the duck and other options.

Yelp
New Halal Chinese spot on Steinway Street. I went on a Monday afternoon. Inside is clean & quiet. I ordered the scallion pancakes, General Tsao chicken & steamed beef dumplings. All 3 foods were fresh & delicious. The beef in the dumplings was heavenly.

Yelp
The food was so oily it was trash. I ordered House lo mein, BBQ Chicken and beef stick appetizers, scallions pancakes super oily, wonton soup that didn't look appetizing and a Thai tea that was super creamy sweet, my whole order was a disappointment waste of money. I ended up ordering from another restaurant!

Yelp
recently dined at Mr Chang, and it was an unforgettable experience. The ambiance was elegant, the service impeccable, and the food exquisite. From the first bite to the last, I was treated to a culinary masterpiece. I highly recommend their mala chicken wings and dry hot pot.

Yelp
Went here with my family on Saturday. Nice Ambience and great service. Appetizers were delicious especially the wings! We had 5 mains all but the Szechuan dish were great. We also had bubble tea which was delicious ! Would definitely come again.

Yelp
Pretty good food. Glad there is a halal Chinese spot I could go to. It was kind of expensive compared to other Chinese places, but that tends to happen when you go to any new halal spot. Orange chicken and Mongolian Beef were pretty good, only complaint is that I asked for the beef to be spicy and there was actually no spice (but that could be my fault because my spice tolerance is pretty high compared to other people). Also expected the fried rice that comes with the dishes actually have everything fried rice has? But it was only rice that was fried? Beef-fried dumplings and chicken lollipops were also pretty good appetizers. Service was also fantastic. Thank you to our waitress who I didn't catch the name of.

Yelp
Place is awesome, very tasty.. the kids loved it ... even the baby loved chicken rice soup.. the shrimp rice and lamb and broccoli was to die for.. very tender and juicy...

Yelp
Just opened recently and I'm so glad they did! Had the Halal Peking duck and it was amazing. Tried the boba floats and regular milk tea, by far best lychee milk tea I've had. The staff was also so kind and a pleasure to be served by. Definitely coming back
