Still the best fried chicken to go! The "to go" location. This take out restaurant sells the best fried chicken Well seasoned, crunchy, and delicious! Served hot and worth the wait. Good sides - greens, and mac n chez. The healthier alternative to feed the family instead of Popeyes n bojangles. They also sell seasoned fried whitting and shrimp. With the best house made tartar sauce.

The food and customer service is always amazing here. I never get to take pictures of the good food because I eat it too fast. The young lady who answers the phone is great and she ensures your order is correct. Their chicken is soooo good you want to eat it all including the bones 😁

Fried flounder plate was amazing 😍 y'all I went back today and ordered fried lobster tails. I also ordered my usual fried flounder. I am even more impressed! It's funny how I want this restaurant to succeed but want to keep it as my own jewel. With that being said I love this place! The food is seasoned extremely well. Thanks to the young men in the back frying up that goodness!!!!!!

This is a pickup spot. Take your food to go. The fish and shrimp were acceptable. Will visit again when on this side of town. Good seafood is hard to find in Charlotte for a gal that lived in a beach town for 15 years.

Best fish in the whole city of Charlotte! Customer service is top tier! I eat here at least once a week! Keep doing what you're doing! You definitely have a customer over here!

The best fried chicken in Charlotte, and perhaps the best in the country. The chicken is so delicious. It is crispy, and the taste really seeps down to the meat. The taste is excellent. The portion of the chicken is also large. The sides are also excellent, especially the hush puppy. The place have no eat in option, but you can eat safely in your car. They will give you a buzzer so you can wait on your car and come back to take your food. Service is really friendly and excellent. Parking space is not too many, but enough. Great place to eat!

I stopped for Lunch @1:30. My Mac and cheese was dry. (Scraped from the bottom to make a serving). Fish was taken from a warmer. I didn't try the Bar. I will give them a second change on my next visit downtown. Will keep u Posted! Not Impressed.😮😟 Lake Wylie SC

This is NOT the place to go if you have a large group!! They first dont want large groups. They want to serve family style rather than letting you select from a select menu. They don't answer calls, return emails, they are not professional, nor are they friendly or receptive. They are a misrepresentation of comfortable dining. Do not deal with David, manager or Lauren for group accommodations. They had us on hold for two weeks and then said we weren't on the book after lLauren did not send a contract or respond to calls. POOR management and PROFESSIONALISM!!!! DON'T DO IT!!!

Last spot in Charlotte. Much hype about this place. Fried chicken-oh so good! Fried fish-oh so yummy! Shrimp oh it's great! Hush puppies- crispy and tasty! Potato salad- not home made but ok Greens-let's start over with another batch Mac and cheese slightly over cooked noodle make very soft dish String beans not so great Yams-pretty good! Would I come back? Yes. I'm chalking up sides as a oops for today and not the product regularly served. Truthfully the fish and chicken were so good I'd definitely return when I'm in the area again. Thanks Mr Charles and Sons.

You gotta watch the waitress and bartender. They will keep your change a and receipt. Oh and the lady got on the mic and said gratuity is not a tip. Whew chile! Had a nerve to have an attitude when you ask for what belongs to you back! Cambridge Commons location.

I was on this side of town and searched for fish and this spot popped up. The pics had me all in as well as the reviews...however I was not wowed. When I arrived the parking lot was a bit tricky but luckily I found a spot. The spot is small so the ordering and waiting area holds maybe 5/6 ppl. The staff looked so unhappy. Like no one smiled or said welcome or just looked like they wanted to be there. I ordered the fish and chicken dinner with potato salad, Mac and cheese and 16 drumettes (6 fried and 6 hot). The fish was way too fishy (whiting) like it was not the freshest. The chicken was okay. Well fried and battered on both the fish and chicken but lacked seasoning. The Mac and cheese was ok. It was not creamy and had a majority of the cheese on top (a preference maybe but I like creamy and cheesy all the way through). The star of the plate was the potato salad. It took me back to my mamas kitchen. Just the right amount of sweet, the Mayo ratio was on point and the texture was just right. It would have been perfection if they didn't serve it in the same box as the hot chicken so it was lukewarm. They threw in a nondescript white roll and some bland hush puppies (add some onion and sugar to these things please). My husband liked the wings but agreed the fried needed a little something on them. Overall the pics looked great but the actual thing was lacking. I'd give it another try specifically for the whole chicken to see if the classics are on point and to see what the other sides are delivering.

I called to place a pick up and the young lady asked me to hold for three second. Well the hold time was over 40 minutes long , I actually drove to the restaurant and still was hold when I got there. There was only three people inside and they had place their orders already. I walked up to the counter and said that is me on hold. She did not apologize all she said was you are here now and I was busy. WOW.!!!! I politely said you asked to me hold for three seconds and promise to call back to the phone and this is the response I received as a customers. She asked me to hang up my phone so the business phone will be available. As soon as I hung the phone rang again but she place the customer on hold and within three minutes took their phone order. The food is great but customer service is HORRIBLE

Food was good but they got my order wrong. Totally wrong sides. Additional I ordered a dark meat chicken sandwich and was given a thigh but the drum stick of a wing which isn't dark meat. I won't be back to this location but will try the other location.

Wheewww Whileeeee Thank Ya Black Jesus If you're looking for sole good ole soul food...this I'd the place for you!! Its a smaller "mom & pop" type restaurant and is small on the inside and parking is limited. However, don't let that deter you because it works out. I got the Surf & Turf that comes with 2 piece of Whiting Fish, 2 Chicken Wings, and 2 Sides. *I got mac n cheese &yams* ...and babyyyyy, I ate the food in the CAR! The food was well seasoned and delicious! The yams were bomb and the mac n cheese was on point. Oh and don't forget to grab you a Lemonade

Do NOT. I repeat-Do NOT use these people for catering. We ordered nearly $800.00 worth of catered food to include: fried chicken, hot wings, Mac and cheese and collard greens. The greens were the worst l have ever had. They tasted like they were from a can, like "Glory" greens and there was no type of meat used to flavor them. It was obvious that the chicken was fried the night before. It was dry and the texture was irregular. We had to throw so much of it away. The hot wings were rubbery and under cooked. Such a disappointment for my mother's retirement party. Good thing we ordered food from other places as well. The mac and cheese was the only saving Grace for this place.

When I read Tameika's great ROTD, I had a sudden craving for fried chicken. Yep, the next day I made my way to Mr. Charles. It's a small shop with no room inside for dining in. As well, minimal parking. The young man who took my order was friendly and fun. Chicken with collards and cole slaw. I drove to a nearby park for a picnic and it was still warm. Chicken was crispy and delicious, the collard greens were still firm and the cole slaw was both crispy and creamy. The batter was flavorful though not spicy and the meat was moist and thoroughly cooked. I really enjoyed this lunch and I'll be adding Mr. Charles to my fried chicken rotation. Amazing bang for your buck. The food is so good, the service is fast and the staff were so kind. Definitely come here for some classic chicken and fish. They have a great selection of sides. I had the fish, chicken, cole slaw and potato salad. This is the closest I've had to my grandmothers potato salad. I didn't love the fried okra. It was fried perfectly but lacked in flavor. The fish and chicken were perfectly seasoned. The fish stayed crispy and wasn't affected by the steam of the styrofoam.

Okay I'm really at like a 3.5. The food is okay. The seafood is definitely worth it and pretty tasty. The sides were pretty 'meh' and generic. As far as how things are running here, I would 100% suggest you call your order in first if possible. The parking lot is small but is a one-way wrap around the building. There is not any seating and waiting for your order can be a bit tricky especially trying to social distance these days. It's a busy spot, so if you order at the location, it's best to place your order and step out and just check back in 15-20 minutes. Overall, they were accommodating, as one side I requested they were out of when making my plate and promptly let me know and gave to option for a different side. I would give them a try if you like seafood though.

I don't care who you are if you like good food this the place. Are you sad ? Well you won't be anymore one you take that first bite they are just phenomenal

This establishment is small but cozy. The food was priced well for the portions. Also the food was seasoned nicely. Not a lot of salt added to anything I ordered. Live music. The staff was great.

MLB is a bit under the weather and I've been thinking about stopping since a while ago and this was as good a time as any... would have been gooder if I'd have called before leaving the shop, wee box of drummettes plus 4-piece mixed had me waiting some... Got everything home in pretty good shape and still warm despite the long ride; breading was light and still crisp on half a fried chicken - meats were cooked though and still moist. sides were starting to fade some; mac and cheese was thickening and the broccoli casserole was giving up some water. pretty sure they were both better earlier and hotter but I'm gonna pass on the sweet potato pie next time :-( food enough in the bag for snacks tomorrow as well and I was quite pleased with it cold out of the fridge :-) nothing gross or greasy, just good chickens

I feel like this place is still one of the best soul food restaurants in Charlotte. Today was just a little off the Mac & cheese was dry, the fish didn't taste like flounder etc etc. I would still go back in a heartbeat I just need it to be better next time I go. The service is always great.

I can appreciate the hole in the wall type establishment especially if the food is on point. I was disappointed. It's too darn tight in there space to order food, wait on food, and pick up orders. The staff are nice. Food just wasn't hitting for me. Ordered the $6.99 flounder sandwich and the three wing dinner with fried okra and Mac and cheese. The sandwich was a joke, ONE average piece of fish on a basic dry hamburger bun and tarter containers on the side. The fish was not fresh and fishy tasting and smelling. Not good at all. The chicken wings were okay but definitely not comparable to all the hype of this being some GOOD fried chicken. I could cook at home and get the same blah flavor profile. The Mac and cheese was cheesy looking but again the flavor was not there, just bland noodles with cheap tasting flavorless cheese. The fried okra unfortunately were soggy from the condensation under the top of the to go container.

I when to the restaurant and it says that isn't open when it's not. They should really update there business hours.

Ok I have been here several times and also to their other location to sit down and eat. I haven't been in a long time because well...trying to do better with my diet. But I wanted some really good food and I thought of Mr. Charles. Don't want to wait? Call it in! I got the All American which was 4 jumbo shrimp, fish (I substituted perch for whiting) two pieces of chicken, hush puppies a roll and two sides. I chose green beans and I thought I said potato wedges but I received potato salad. No biggie their potato salad is also good. And Allll of this food for less than $20!! Of course I was able to eat off this plate like 3 different times because it was so much food! It was piping hot, fresh and delicious! The tarter sauce was also good which for me can be a deal breaker if a place has great seafood and horrible tartar. Even though there was a line-I mean I went on a Friday..IYKYK Lol, the service was quick and I placed my order when I got there. It's standing room only and the parking can be a little tricky but it's well worth it!!

Found this place on Yelp and happened to be in the area, so gave it a try. Firstly please be warned, the parking lot is right and small. I circled back out and around the street a couple of times before I landed a spot. They have a good bit of traffic. This usually keeps me optimistic about the food. Walk in and it's a small takeout joint. I ordered the Surf n Turf. Two piece dark chicken & fish w/ mac & cheese and collards, about $11 I waited about 10 minutes and by that time quite a bit of ppl came in. Good sign, for me! I get to the car and the chicken fish is fresh and hot. I try the leg and I must say I was definitely impressed with the chicken. The fish was hot but was a bit overcooked. It was a little tougher vs soft and flaky. Flavor was good, added mustard. Went to try the sides and was disappointed big time. Both had little flavor and my mac was watery at the bottom. It was offputting. I get home and eat some more of the chicken and fish. Not long after I started to feel pretty bad. Needless to say, the rest of the plate went in the garbage. I won't be visiting again. However, their chicken was great. So if you do go, get that. It's clearly what they specialize in.

This is a nice place for quick soul food. I loved the shrimp, chicken with collard greens and broccoli casserole. The shrimp are little but understandable for price no complaints. Nice balance of seasonings and not a lot of breading thank goodness. It was a lot of food for the price so a great value. It's a takeout joint so no frills. It's best to call in your order. I will go back.

My friends were BEGGING me to try Mr. Charles. They said they couldn't keep their hands out of the to-go boxes while driving. I was excited and eager to get a piece of some 'real' fried chicken and seafood. Atlas, I found time to get over to this small counter of a restaurant. It was PACKED. They told me not to expect much with the appearance, so that did not throw me off. With as many people that were in there, I just knew my food would take upward to thirty minutes and I was not prepared to wait during this heat wave. I was wrong. I settled on the shrimp and chicken combo that came with two sides. The healthy side of me chose hushpuppies and fries to accommodate my other fried foods. The mac & cheese did not look appetizing at around 4 p.m. The staff members were very friendly and upbeat. They remembered people's orders and that cut down on the wait. I probably stood in the coupe for ten minutes. I got in the car and wanted to taste the fried goodness and have grease all over my wheel as my friends did, but my food was just okay. I waited until I got home. The chicken is fried PERFECTLY, but there was no seasoning in the batter. My hushpuppies and fries were good, not something I'm running home for, but they were decent. The shrimp again was fried nicely, but no seasoning was used in the making of my Mr. Charles meal. I sprinkled good ol Old Bay on my meal to finish it off. Maybe I went on an off day? I would love to try it again with some real southern seasoning.

LISTENNNNNN ITS GIVING WHATS ITS SUPPOSE TO GIVE LOL!! They don't have BBQ wings so i asked if they could add that to my wings, AND oooh man! It's so flavorful ! This is really the best chicken spot in Charlotte. I'm a foodie and a judgey food critic by heart lol so if it's not good i won't sugar coat it. THANK GOODNESS FOR black owned businesses. I promise we know how to cook southern food better we add SEASONS! Lol. The staff and cook are very nice and polite. They even looked like they loved their job. I really will come back for more. 5 stars ! Also they have a device to let you know when your food is ready which is a bonus.

Meh, I wanted to try this place cause I drive by here al the time, but it was closed. Went on a Saturday about noon, so IDK.

I have a confession, I've been to Mr. Charles three times in the last week. It's just that damn good! Today their newer restaurant in Cambridge is closed and I've been craving that Whiting fish since my combo plate on Saturday. Yep, I'm driving to the original one to get my fix! As most have pointed out, this isn't a sit down restaurant. Who am I kidding, any smaller and you'd be picking up the food from outside and through a window! They have a couple of chairs for people waiting for their take-out orders and that's about it, no-frills to the max. I'm actually not even sure if they have a restroom avaliable to customers, don't quote me on that one. What they lack in amenities, they more than make up for in their namesake: Perfect Chicken, and even perfect-er fish! I told myself that I was going to be good and just get the Whiting fish with collards, but I couldn't resist and got the chicken as well (still got the collards though, so veggies!). One sure way to tell great chicken from 'just OK' is if you have to put any sauce on it. I get the leg and thigh with NO sauce. They have hot sauce packets avaliable but it's not needed. Perfect golden brown and seasoned just right. It would be a crime to put anything on this, just sayin'. Parking is awful, I know it, you know it, and Mr. Charles knows it. It's a tiny lot, bring your patience and please call ahead! It keeps the chicken flowing smoothly (and the parking a bit more bearable!). If you're looking for more of a restaurant package with the same delicious food, they recently opened a full-fledged restaurant in the Cambridge neighborhood in East Charlotte. Check 'em out, just remember that the Statesville Ave. location is closed Sunday and the Cambridge store is closed Monday. Eat here, your soul will thank you.

Went in on a Friday evening. Ordered the chicken only special for like $9. The chicken had flavor and was hot.

This place is good went here for lunch and ordered take out. The food tasted like a grandma cooking Sunday dinner. The staff was nice and the food was nice and hot. The flavoring of their fried chicken was good. I ordered Mac and cheese with a 16 piece of fried chicken it was flavorful. I also ordered a fish sandwich with fries. Fries and the fish were flavorful. I will be coming back to try some more of their menu choices. They do have two locations. The only thing about this location is their parking lot. It's very small and hard to get in and out of.

Ok I'm not a local and I was in town for business and I happened to pass this place on my way to a location and thought it was odd that a food place was connected to a barbershop. On my last day in NC I found myself passing this place again so I decided to give it a chance after reading reviews. Parking was ok even tho it was busy and there is no inside dining, just a walk up counter to place and pick up orders. It is small so we did have to rotate in and out for social distance precautions. Now let's talk about the food! MR CHARLES DON'T OWE ME NOTHING!!!!! Everything we had was AWESOME! We ordered the chicken wing dinner with Mac and cheese with candied yams, the fried pork chop and the wighting sandwich with a mini sweet potato pie. The chicken, fish & pork chop were seasoned and cooked perfectly. The Mac and cheese was the best I had outside my own kitchen and the candy yams made me want to give a kiss to whoever made them. Awesome! I will definitely be back when I'm in town, the customer service was awesome as well.

Food is always excellent for a small meal & eating place,lunch, dinner ,quick meal if you don't feel like cooking that day. I've been coming here for years love the customer service & food.

I just finished eating lunch here for my first time. Food was super hot and fresh. I got the fish and shrimp combo. Waited 30 minutes after placing my order until we received it. Unfortunately there were no seasonings in the batter. Hot but zero flavor. 3 bites into my fish I encountered bones! I decided to bite into the second piece and more bones. Tossed the rest into the grass. As eager as I was to eat here, I was as eager to leave.

Best fried chicken in the area! I've been to several places and this is definitely at the top when I'm craving fried wings. Very flavorful! And the greens were superb!

1st of all this is seriously one of my favorite chicken spots in the world. They know how to fry some chicken period. I love this place they are very nice and I literally have never had a bad experience with the food. The parking lot is small but trust me you wouldn't care after u eat your food. Now there is no seating area you have to take your food to go at this particular location. The restaurant does have a second location near Harrisburg that you can sit in and eat and they have karaoke nights etc. The menu is posted on the walls but I'm telling u just get you chicken wings and wedges (that's a Po boy) to start you'll be back to try everything else.

I was definitely craving some fried chicken today. So I go to Yelp and search best chicken wings nearby. This place was at the top. I was super excited. The place is on the corner of a pretty busy highway. Parking is atrocious, but I survived. I ordered through the Yelp app (ChowNow). I go inside and there are a few other customers standing around. Not super clear if they had already ordered or if they were waiting, but I got through. Went to the front and stated I ordered online. It was ready right away (a big plus in my book). I ordered a 4 piece dark dinner with 2 sides (fries and green beans). The chicken had a weird taste - can't really explain (old grease? Fishy?). The green beans did as well. Fries were good. I wonder if time of day matters. Either way I wasn't super impressed this time.

My mother asked for fried chicken and not from KFC. When my mom sends a message all you can do is deliver and that started our hunt fried chicken. We asked around for the best fried chicken and was told about this place. I'm not from NC so I listened to the locals. The funny thing is the guy I asked was selling fried chicken from a cart and told me this was the only place he bought fried chicken. I'm not sure if he realized he let someone else capitalize on my cash, but I appreciated his honesty. When I asked the girl behind the counter what was the best thing to order, she responded saying everything is good. Now, most people love to say this at establishments they work in. However, baby, let me tell you this food was FIYYYAAAHHH! She did not lie. Literally, everything we ordered was good. We ordered fried chicken, fried whiting, mac and cheese, yams, baked beans, fries and biscuits. The chicken and fish was well seasoned with just enough crisp on the outside. The mac was cheesy, yams weren't overly sweet and they were a perfect mix. I wanted to lick the baked beans bowl and my plate. The rolls were soft and the fries were golden. I actually knew the food would be good when we drove up to this location- small parking lot, and standing room only inside. It's basically one of those great "hole in the wall spots." I would go back a million times. The food was actually better than the more pristine, snooty establishments we went to. I suggest you don't cheat yourself and treat yourself. I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in NC.

I've visited the dining Mr. Charles and was impressed. So I finally decided to try the take out location which is within 5 minutes of my job, which means lunch! I wanted in to a burst of energy. A lot of movement in the kitchen, Communication, and smiling faces. I was greeted immediately but took a minute to review the menu. I went with the All American at this location as I did with the dine in location so that I could compare. The All American includes 2 pieces of chicken, fish, shrimp, 2 sides & a roll. I went with the Mac & Cheese and Wedges for my sides. I saw a previous review for the Wedges so I had to try them. This location has already fried chicken and wedges in a case which makes the wait time faster. I only had to wait for the fish and shrimp. The wait space isn't big at all but I sat there and observed as people came in. You can tell they get to know their customers. I saw a few regulars who walked in and they knew their order before the customer even said anything. It was a busy place with not a single moment where people weren't coming in or calling in orders. When my food was ready, about 10 minutes later, they made sure I had all of my condiments and I was on my way. The food was equally as good as the dine in location. Everything was seasoned VERY well and fried to the perfect crisp. The mac and cheese was the baked mac and cheese I'm familiar with at home which means it was made right and was cheesy. The Wedges stole the show in sides tho, they were nice sized and seasoned well. Probably about the best wedges I've tasted at a restaurant. Now with this great experience I plan to make Mr Charles a regular lunch spot!

Fish, shrimp and Mac & cheese is great. Okra is a little salty, but I will still order it. The customer service is good the online ordering experience works well. There is very limited parking at the Statesville Rd. location.

Had the wings and Mom had 2 pieces fried chicken. Delicious . Finally a restaurant with great food close to home.

I'm always on the hunt for a good fish sandwich and I especially love going to places with history and longevity in the business. Mr Charles has been around since the 80's, is a father/son business and are known for their chicken poboy( 3 piece, potato wedges and a roll). I called in my order of chicken and fish and arrived just before closing. I conversed with the father who rang me up and he couldn't believe I had never been there before since I've lived in Charlotte a while. He was such a nice guy and reminded me of home when he asked for my last name to ensure he didn't know any of my 'folks'.......too funny. I wasn't in love with how the fish and chicken was seasoned, the potato wedges were actually seasoned better, but I do plan to return for what I hear is a pretty mean turkey burger.

I give kost places a 1 3 or 5 star. I'm giving this place a 5 star but would subtract for hygiene reasons. Let's talk about the food. Shrimp here is seasoned so good!!! Mac and cheese is A. The fried okra is good too. My friend hada cheeseburger with bacon and it's a real hand made patty thick and juicy. Fries are good and tea is Sweet. This is a black owned family ran restaurant. Take out only. They do have a 2nd location. Most people call their orders in. Waiting area is very small. Sides are precooked and sitting out exposed which I didnt like. Also the very sweet cashier was not wearing gloves hair net or washing his hands and he was handling money And FOOD. Please change this practice. And why is your store a 90. That is LOW. Parking lot is a nightmare especially at lunch and dinner times. I do recommend trying this place for some great soul food. As I continued to eat my food I felt like the food was a little tooooo salty.

I also want to add the customer service is excellent I do say that much that's a reason why I will come back because the two women that was there when was helping customers at a bar on the other lady she was happened to the people that came in she was very very nice she was busy and and she really was really really nice I did not get her name but she's so short dark skin girl not dark skin but, brown-skinned Lord and the other ones that are one and she was young but she was really really nice on next time I will get her name that's the only reason why I come

I've eaten here multiple times & have never been disappointed . The reason i'm leaving 3 stars today is because it's Friday @ 1:30 & no one has answered the phone . work hours are from 11-9 so i'm not understanding why I can't call in to place an order . It's inconvenient .

Just eat here. Food is amazing. It's takeout only and parking is cramped, but all worth it. If your looking for southern food done right at a reasonable price. Look no further.

Damn good food for the soulful pescaterian! Bojangles/JJ's/Showmars are def inferior in terms of customer service, portions, as well as flavor. Im ashamed that Im just trying this place out. Ill be back!
