Best Restaurants and Bars Near Union Square in Downtown San Francisco | Eater SF

"If you like your vegan fast food with a side of anti-establishment vibes, Mr. Charlie’s is the place for you. The restaurant will look familiar to anyone who’s ever stepped inside a McDonald’s restaurant, but Mr. Charlie’s turns that on its head with golden-hued frowns and vegan offerings. The menu is very similar to the fast-food giant, though items are particularly named to Mr. Charlie’s theme, such as Not a Cheeseburger or Not a Chicken Sandwich, and the combo meal is flipped to be called a “Frowny.” Union Square is just one of three locations worldwide — the other two are located in Los Angeles and Sydney, Australia — and whether you’re going here as a fun diversion or for a vegan meal, Mr. Charlie’s satisfies both endeavors." - Dianne de Guzman

Such a cool place! Open late — perfect for grabbing a quick bite anytime. The vibe is warm, cozy, and stylish. Everything is 100% vegan — animals are safe, and that makes me happy! 🐮🐔💚 I truly respect that they offer jobs to people who’ve been through hard times or even served time in prison. Love the mission, love the food. Thank you for making the world a little better! 😃💚

April 2025: Stopped by for lunch and tried the Mr Chuck, which is the Big Mac knockoff. I enjoyed the burger 🍔 and would come back again. I read about this place when they first opened. Glad I finally was able to try it. I'm usually not a big fan of vegan cheese but this cheese was pretty good. Service was friendly. They brought the food to our table.

Google
They really nailed the aesthetic ✨️it even smells like a McD*nald's from the seasonings. Pricier, but higher quality and without the animal abuse so worth it to me. The batter fried nuggets and shoestring fries are fantastic. Great vegan breakfast options too. We got the Double and while good, was a goopy mess from the cheese. I would not recommend eating at location for any burger with cheese as it'll get all over your hands and unfortunately they don't have any wet wipes or a bathroom to clean your hands after.

Google
In total I got a hamburger, drink, fries, and 4 chicken nuggets and the total came out to 18$. Very overpriced for what it is, the chicken nuggets are tiny and not that great texture wise. The fries were great though. It’s pretty spacious inside and the hamburger didn’t taste too much like a meat substitute which was good. Solid 4, it would get a 5 if it was cheaper.

I was intrigued by Mr. Charlie's and had to experience it for myself. I was thoroughly impressed, returning twice in a row! The food quality is notably superior, offering a refreshing alternative. The atmosphere is very comfortable, and the creative display out front is a delightful touch. The staff provided exceptional service, contributing to a truly positive experience. The fries are unique; for optimal enjoyment, I recommend eating them immediately upon serving. I am eager to return and highly recommend Mr. Charlie's. Their strategic location across from a well-known fast-food chain is a clever and confident statement. I sincerely hope Mr. Charlie's enjoys long-term success!"

Google
Easily one of the best burgers I’ve ever had, even compared to meat ones. Got the Royale with Mr. Chuck sauce on the side. Also do not leave without the nuggets, exactly like ones from Mikey D’s. Will definitely return.

Google
It was a great experience to check this restaurant out. At this location specifically, there’s a McDonald’s across the street! Unfortunately, the taste of the vegan chicken nuggets and burger was a bit disappointing for me, but the fries were good and the sauce variety was refreshing. The staff and atmosphere were lovely.

Google
Front employee could use better customer service. Ordering a little confusing at first, they need better signage. Had a cheese burger that seemed it was smashed. Don't like the taste of the burger and nuggets. Only thing I and my family liked was the fries. They have a high rating? Not sure where that comes from.

Yelp
I FINALLY GOT TO TRY MR CHARLIES AND IT WAS AMAZING I ordered the Royal with Cheese frowny meal which came with fries and nuggets. The meal was super filling and absolutely great. The Royal, made with Impossible, slapped. The staff said it was bigger and had a sesame bun, but otherwise I couldn't tell how it was different than their regular cheeseburger. That's ok, there was more than enough food in the meal, and ordering the Royale felt serendipitous having just watched Pulp Fiction. Fries were great, the nuggets were good and an extra protein boost, and I loved that they offered a low sugar soda--the blueberry soda has 8g--that was really good without being punishingly sweet. Most of all, I loved the whole statement. I had to get a frowny meal and I couldn't stop laughing at the box. The booth seating is really clever, and the whole decor is quite a scene. Especially being across the street from a MacDonalds. The white sauce was a dud--too sweet, which is odd for somebody who has a sweet tooth. But the staff generously gave me a click sauce that is like a thousand island and I loved. My only improvement is i would love to see them grow into the dessert game. Maybe some soft serve or at least warm chocolate chips? People complain about the price, but that's only because they are comparing it to McDonalds. I paid $23 for a giant meal that was excellent, and they literally have $6 burgers on the menu so c'mon folks. Looking forward to seeing this take over McDonalds...turn that frown upside down!

Yelp
Glad I made the trek here final, I've been immensely curious about this place since they opened and when I read about their concept. No utensils and no ketchup station. Kinda wish I ordered the meal as a to-go just to get to see the red take-out box up close, but that would be silly. Pretty pricy! It was $45 for one frowny meal and two a la carte burgers, considering the shape and size of the burgers. When I realized in the first order I made that both burgers were vegan chicken, it was necessary to order a vegan cheese beef burger to try it out. Personally speaking, the vegan chicken tasted much better than the beef. Not to upset anyone but the Impossible Beef brand works because it wiggled itself inside my working memory, tastes better, and I do buy it from the grocery store even and cook with it. Satisfied my curiosity. It's across the street from McDonald's which made the location stand out more.

Yelp
If I'm craving a fast food burger, this is one of the places I love to go to! Great vegan replica of Mc Donald's (and dare I say, better!) great advertising and consistent/comparable Mc Donald's flavors. Food: if it's your first time, grab a frowny meal bc it comes with everything (burger, nuggets, and fries). They also have great sauce options! Sadly, no honey mustard or accessible salt and pepper packets :( also prices are more expensive bc it's vegan. Service: self service ordering or in person at the register. It may be slower to get your food (~10 minutes). Depending on the worker, they're super funny (they will troll you) or super helpful (one worker brought a to go bag to my table). Ambiance: small location, fits around 20-30 people indoors. Cute seating and signage! (You can choose to eat inside a frowny meal box!) the seating inside the boxes are awkwardly spaced so you'll have to sit at the edge of your seat to eat. Parking: it's downtown SF so it can be tricky to find street parking. Garage parking is worth it if you're spending the whole day, if not, I recommend taking public transit

Yelp
Bold, BOLD statement to open up directly across the street from McDonald's. I love that vaguely reckless energy and have wanted to stop in from the minute it opened. Finally, the stars aligned. Seems like the initial hype has died down because it was pretty quiet for prime dinner time, which felt even more ominous given how busy the competition. Regardless, it was nice to walk right in, get my food quickly, and have plenty of places to sit. Breakfast is served all day which is absolutely clutch. I went simple with the Mr. Muffin: An English muffin, vegan folded egg, and cheese. That's it. Am I annoyed that this assembly work of prepared food cost $6.50 with tax, before tip? Yes. Am I also pissed by how perfectly it hit the spot? Yes, furious. Look, they can't compete on price, but you're here because you're an ethical or environmental vegan who wants to scratch that comfort food itch. You know what you're getting and they absolutely deliver. The sandwich was hot, the egg was fluffy, and the cheese was super gooey. I left completely satisfied, and would do it again.

Yelp
I saw this place on instagram and decided to give it a try. There's street parking but the earlier you go the better. We walked in as soon as it open. I'm not going to lie this place is so cute and great for pictures. They have giant happy meals for seating. You walk up to the kiosk and you place your own order. It was a bit pricey that's the only reason I gave it a four stars. When your order is up you take your happy meal box they give you a drink from five options they have. The food itself is very good my son didn't even know it was vegan. Overall definitely worth trying!

Yelp
I live for the fact that Mr. Charlie's is located right across the street from McDonald's. You can't deny it's hilarious but hey, a lot of fast food places use the red-yellow color scheme to make you hungry and it works. The fully vegan burger shop hits on nostalgia especially for people like me that no longer eat meat. The shop was cooky but fun with a few tables inside these large Mr. Frownie boxes. They use impossible patties for their meat and offer a similar menu to the golden arches. Being breakfast time, I decided on the Mr.Muffin that used Justegg and an impossible breakfast patty. The food reminded me so hard of the old McD days that I have to give them their flowers. I also got to try their fries and while it didn't quite hit the same, they were still very good. Although it's meant to parody McDonald's, the prices are steeper. But you are also getting better food with higher quality. Strangely, we arrived at 9 when they opened for breakfast and their cashier hadn't arrived, so we were asked to order for pickup on Ubereats (which have higher pricing). A bit of a let down but we were already there and wanted to try their food. Definitely come maybe closer to 10 or later.

Yelp
I stopped by here while I was in the area. The store was almost empty and I ordered on one of the screen kiosks, I got the "not a hamburger" because for the cheeseburgers, they only offer plant based cheese. It took around 5 mins to be ready, which was a bit longer than I expected for fast food given there didn't appear to be customers waiting ahead. One of the workers came out to hand the burger to me. Overall I find the burger is a little empty/flat as it has few ingredients, but in that sense it is comparable to the McDonalds most basic hamburgers which it is riffing off of. It's not enough to be a meal but is fine for a snack or something to tide you over. The plant based meat was pretty good though, passable enough. Overall it was a decent burger, but I wish it was more filling or that they had options with more ingredients. There is some seating inside, and satirical red and yellow themed decor, including a cow statue toward the front with a sign saying "stop looking at me like I'm a piece of meat."

Yelp
Finally had the chance to check it out! It's ironic that it's located across from the big corp they're trying to parody. Walked in and it had very nice trendy vibes with neon signs, posters of some daily deals (we went on Monday- regret not reading the Monday deal before ordering), and have these booths shaped like their to-go box. This place was designed in a creative way to utilize the small interior they had while making it aesthetic. Service was okay. We ordered through a kiosk, so no interaction with the staff. The food took about 10-15 minutes wait time. Not bad! We ordered the No. 2 Not a Cheeseburger meal as our first meal to try. Not a Cheeseburger: The non-meat burger was the best non-meat burger I've ever tasted! It tasted almost like the real burger patty. I think that's my favorite out of the whole meal. Not Chicken Nuggets: I was not a fan of them. It tasted weird to me. I don't know how to describe it, but I would never order them. Fries: The fries were very seasoned (with salt). It has the iconic big corp's shape and length of the fries. It had a slight flavor of peanut oil. It's pretty decent. Soda glass: The drink provided was a glass soda. They have a bottle cap opener near the garbage can- very smart placement as when you use the bottle cap opener, the cap falls straight into the garbage can. I'd come back if I'm around the area!

Yelp
While heading to the Philippine Embassy, I stumbled across Mr. Charlie's, a viral McDonald's dupe conveniently located across the street from both the embassy and an actual McDonald's. It was nearing lunchtime, so I decided to check it out. Walking in felt like stepping into a Twilight Zone version of McDonald's. The walls were adorned with the signature red and gold colors, sprinkled with quirky nods to Ronald McDonald. The décor was playful and inviting, with plenty of seating. Two standout booths were housed inside oversized Happy Meal-style boxes, adding a fun and creative touch to the space. One key detail: everything on the menu is vegetarian. Yet, you'd never guess that from the taste. I ordered the Mr. Charlie's meal, which included a burger, fries, nuggets, and a drink. To my surprise, the burger was indistinguishable from the real thing, and the fries were exceptional--some of the best I've had. The nuggets, however, were a bit of a letdown. While not terrible, their flavor and texture gave away their meatless nature. The only real downside was the price. The meal was noticeably more expensive than your typical McDonald's fare, so if you're watching your wallet, the golden arches across the street might be the more budget-friendly choice. Still, would I go back? Absolutely. The food was delicious, and it felt great supporting a small business standing up against corporate giants. It's a unique and satisfying experience that I'd happily revisit.

Yelp
To keep it simple: Terrible service (no longer a customer) Details: Soda fountain was flat (ie. no carbonation). I notified the only worker, and a lot of back and forth with no acceptable solution resulted (resistive worker). While on my lunch hour I left with having to pay over $20 for my meal with a bottled water instead of the soda that came with the meal I paid for. Beyond disappointed over a stupid soda. Service is everything and this place failed big time.

Yelp
Solid spot for vegan burgers. Funny it's right across the street from McDonalds. They have similar menu style of burgers, sandwiches and nuggets. Everything is vegan, the staff was super friendly and recommended the aiolis for nugs. Price. Little high buts SF after all.

Yelp
I came across Mr. Charlie's when I was passing by downtown SF and the aesthetic of this place caught my attention; but I didn't have time to give it a try. This place peaked my interest even more when I came across a couple food Vlogs on social media raving about Mr. Charlie's. So I then decided I would take the time to try this place out. Mr. Charlie's is the Vegan version of McDonald's and like others have pointed out with their reviews. It's right across the street from a McDonald's; which makes this even funnier to me. The color scheme and bright yellow lights; gives you the feel that you're in McDonald's. I would say Mr. Charlie's would be an elevated grown up version of it. I love the aesthetic of this place it's cute and fun; when you get your order they give it to you in a grown up Happy Meal Box. What I Got: Mr. Charlie's serves both Breakfast/lunch/Dinner. I came here on a late Friday night for Dinner and ordered their Frowny Cheeseburger Meal. This meal comes with single Vegan Cheeseburger, Chicken Nuggets, Fries, and Drink with side of dipping sauce for Nuggets I got Garlic Aioli I believe. Rating: Vegan Cheeseburger: 5/5 Excellent, I am not Vegan but this Cheeseburger is so good; those who may have been reluctant to try Vegan food. You wouldn't be able to tell different between this and real McDonald's Cheeseburger. Frowny Cheeseburger Taste even better than McDonald's as everything here is made to order. 4 pc Vegan Nuggets: 2.5/5 These Nuggets were big disappointment for me. I didn't like the texture of the Nuggets; I felt as though I was biting into an eraser when eating these. The Nuggets had a very rubbery firm texture to them; that you couldn't mistake for real Chicken Nuggets. The plus with these nuggets is that they were crispy and Golden and had a bit of spicy kick to them. Of they improved the texture of Nuggets I think these would be a big hit. Fries: 3.5/5 The fries tasted like a mix between In-N-Out Burger and McDonald's. A little overcooked and dry for my liking and could use a tad bit more salt. But they were good and Fresh. Service:5/5 The cashier was very friendly and efficient when ringing up my order and bringing out the food. Note: they don't sell desserts and all drinks are bottled. I definitely enjoyed my food overall, and I will be back to try it again.

Yelp
I've tried this place for breakfast back in may. The food was decent, but nothing spectacular. I had returned today for dinner, and I ordered a double "cheeseburger" with fries and 4 "chicken" nuggets. The price is on the high side, but it's totally worth it! I went home to chow down on my food, and I was surprised! The nuggets looked and tasted like the real thing. My fries were also pretty tasty. My double "cheeseburger" was also similar to the real thing in appearance and taste. However, the ketchup on my burger tasted really different, like in a good way. The ketchup has a sweet taste, but it's not overly sweet. The ketchup also tastes fresh, like it's made in house. In all, this place is pretty cool. The employees could be a bit friendlier, but I guess it's just the sign of the times.

Yelp
"It's just a vegan burger" but it's more than that. Mr. Charlie's really captured the nostalgia of a fast food burger, but without skimping on the quality. I wish I had tried the breakfast foods, but very tasty overall. The only downfall is there is limited seating and there isn't a restroom.
google avatar

Yelp
Expensive!!! Once you've accepted this, you'll enjoy the rest of the meal. Super cute decor, really good tasting food and made quick.
google avatar

Alex R.

Yelp
* Service was quick and the employees are friendly. * Atmosphere is friendly and fun. * Fries aren't similar to McDonald's but are still really good * Burgers taste great and do give off a McDonald's vibe flavor wise. * Not comparable price-wise to McDonalds but that is expected with vegan food. * Nothing was too special or stood out very much. I could see myself returning if I lived closer but otherwise is a great one time experience I'd recommend.

Yelp
Always walk by this place when in San Francisco. We finally stopped inside and ordered food. The fries were delicious, but I was more surprised by how the frying grease didn't make me feel sick. The burger was also delicious and the meat was soft. The food did not disappoint or make me suck, since most fast food makes me sick. Will eat again here! I also love the aesthetic of this place, it's so colorful and fun.

Yelp
Not vegetarian but I freaking love McDonald's so I HAD to try the business trolling them. lol We wanted to try a little bit of everything, so we went with a frowny meal - (not) a hamburger, 4 nuggies, fries, and a drink. We also got the not a chicken sandwich. Everything ended up being around 30 bucks. I was pleasantly surprised how good this was! The chicken sandwich and fries were almost identical to McDonald's. You really can't tell this is a meat alternative and the fry flavor was so spot on. The hamburger was whatever, I wasn't a big fan of the taste or texture. You can definitely tell this one is not meat. The nuggets also started to taste odd after they sat for a while. We paired everything with their green goddess sauce. The flavor was good, but I caught myself craving just regular bbq or buffalo. The self-serve kiosk was not working. I was helped promptly at the counter. Food is cooked to order, so expect to wait. There was probably one or two orders ahead of me and I waited around 20 minutes. Overall, this was fun and I'm a sucker for cool marketing. I don't think I would come back because there's a regular McDonald's across the street. hehe but if I was a plant-based eater, I would be a regular! Worth checking out!

Yelp
Alright, maybe my expectations are were super low, but I was shocked at how much I enjoyed my first Mr. Charlies experience! First off, aside from the decor being McDonald's adjacent, it's far from a normal fast food experience. Id compare to more of a fast casual spot because the food is made to order so it did take some time but having something fresh was worth it. My favorite was the chicken sandwich. It was bigger, thicker, and more flavorful than a mcchicken, and I honestly couldn't tell this was vegan. Blew my mind! The burger was ok but I'd much prefer a regular McDonald's burgers, this one wasn't as good. The nuggets were also eh, first one tasted good, then the second one was not great. The last thing was the fries, these were delicious! Better than most fast casual or fast food fries, definitely tasty and piping hot. We spent close to $30 for two of us to share everything, and we were pretty full. If you are vegan or want to experience this, it's worth trying out, especially if you are former or current McDonald's fan.

Yelp
The service was chill, respectful, and friendly. Definitely turned my frown upside down. lol. (It's an inside joke). The burger is better than MD but it's plant-based so of course it is. The French fries taste real! No added stuff and the sauces are great. Try the green goddess sauce... it's like a chimi sauce on your burger. Also try the Bbq sauce, same MD bbq sauce taste no extra additives. Order the Mexican Coca Cola, meal comes with nuggets automatically, and two sauces. I definitely recommend this restaurant and the entire chain. Maybe they'll come over to the east coast soon. .

Yelp
3.75 stars rounded up. I aspire to achieve Mr. Charlie's level of petty. The plant-based fast food eatery pokes fun at McDonald's & their meat-heavy menu, even going as far as echoing the familiar red & yellow packaging & putting a sarcastic spin on McDonald's trademarked items. I wanted to get a taste of Mr. Charlie's vegan take on my childhood faves so I ordered almost everything except for breakfast (saving that for next time.) I tried: -- Not a Cheeseburger Frowny Meal No. 2 ($17.99): enjoyed the coarsely-cut onions, did not care for the vegan cheese (which is a me issue.) Came with four nuggets which were a bit tough & bland even after running one through the flavorful chipotle aioli dipping sauce. Fries were not the addictive, salty Mickey D fries of my youth. Unique Sour Blueberry soda. A lot of food for a reasonable price. -- Not a Chicken Sandwich ($9.99): my first time trying Tindle brand plant-based chicken. Absolutely loved this item. Perfect ratio of shredded lettuce & mayo to "chicken." Five stars. -- Mr. Chuck ($11.99): their rendition of the Big Mac contained all the important elements but the bun did not effectively hold all the ingredients & quickly became a soggy mess. My least favorite sandwich. I first came across Mr. Charlie's in L.A. but didn't have a chance to try them til I was home in the Bay Area. Thrilled to have a Mr. Charlie's location near me; I'm a picky meat eater so I'm always down to try vegan and/or vegetarian versions of fast food. Processed fake meat probably isn't any healthier than whatever McD's is serving but I like having multiple ways to wreck my health.

Yelp
The decor is fun and eye-catching and the location totally matches the company's demeanor as it's across the street from a McDonald's. The food is somewhat close to what McDonald's tastes like. I got a Not a Chicken Sandwich and a Double Not Frowny Meal which includes a Double Not Cheeseburger, Fries, Not Chicken Nuggets I think the majority of people would definitely be able to tell the difference in the 2 products, but the overall flavor profiles match what they're imitating. A little pricey for what it is, but it's always nice to have plant based options readily availble. I don't mind eating here over McDonald's, which I think is part of their goal
google avatar

Lisa B.

Yelp
Great French fries just like the McDonald's And the burgers taste like what I remember from the same. Except without all the animal products - 100% plant abased vegan. Takes about 10 mins to get your food so it's not instantaneous but it's worth the small wait if you want that old classic taste. And no bathrooms here so plan ahead. Good to swing by if you are visiting union square. They post as no gluten free options :so that's a bummer.

Jessie Rae R.

Yelp
Bright atmosphere, friendly staff, delicious food! We had (3) frowny meals, Mr. Royal with cheese, double not & not a cheeseburger. Burgers were tasty, fries were hot, crisp and gone. Not chicken nuggets, crunchy with realistic texture. The green dipping sauce was addicting!! Clever concept & enjoyable meal.

Yelp
So glad I finally got to try Mr. Charlie's! The store is colorful and fun with adorable booth seats, and everything was super clean even though it was late at night. Service was friendly and speedy. Not the cheapest "fast food" meal but it did not disappoint me! Recs: Fries and nuggets were delicious I was almost positive I was eating real cheese in the cheeseburger -- it was so convincing. I think it would have been nice to include more pickles or accompaniments for the price. :') The nuggets are perfectly thick and crispy and go super well with the chipotle mayo. The price of my two items a la charge was almost equivalent to the combo price, so I'd probably consider getting a combo next time :')
google avatar

Yelp
Mr. Charlie's is a clear pro-animal parody of McDonalds, but don't be fooled this is NO McDonalds! The quality is much much higher than fast food. I got the Big Chuck Frowny Meal. The burger was well-cooked and filling, but that was expected. The real star was the nuggets, which were perfectly crispy and soft in the middle. When I come back I will either get an order of nuggets or a breakfast (if I come before 4:20). The parody is so clear in the atmosphere. I loved just looking around the space! The service was chill and friendly! Will certainly come again.

Yelp
I tried Mr. Charlie's in Union Square through DoorDash when they first opened. As someone who's fully vegan--not your "SF trendy vegan" but on a strict gorilla diet (minus the insects, of course)--I usually avoid processed foods altogether. So, this was definitely a rare indulgence or treat for me. The food? Surprisingly spot-on. The burger was good, almost eerily close to McDonald's in taste and texture. It's impressive how they nailed the resemblance! But the nuggets? Hands down the best part--crispy, flavorful, and satisfying. Would I go again? Probably not, since processed food isn't my thing. But if you're a vegan looking for a nostalgic fast-food fix, Mr. Charlie's is absolutely the place to check out.

Yelp
Love this place! Such a cool interior, staff was super friendly and the food tasted just like McDonald's without the dead animals. Def recommend this over McDonald's any day!

Yelp
The food was okay but the employees lies to us so let me explain i asked my to buy ice cream and i saw someone getting it with no reason i asked to get on but he thinks me im dumb he refuses to give me and i asked him for ice cream he refuses i asked him for refund he says no. My mom got angry and we go home im not gonna go back this time its the worst restaurant in san fransisco

Yelp
We were looking for a vegetarian restaurant in the area and found this vegan version of McDonald's, iconically right across the street from an actual McDonald's! The moment we stepped in, it reminded me of a fun interactive art museum, almost like OmegaMart in Las Vegas. Cute little booths to sit in as well. We ordered the Not a Cheeseburger, the Not a Chicken Sandwich Frowny Meal, and the BigChuck Frowny Meal. The Frowny Meals came with nuggets and fries along with different sauces. All the burgers were tasty, and good vegan substitutes for the real thing! I will say the burgers were better when they were hot, because when the vegan cheese cooled down it congealed a bit. Still great burgers! The nuggets you could definitely tell tasted vegan compared to the burgers, but the fries and sauces the meals came with were delectable. I could drink that chipotle aioli sauce. Pretty good service as well, the food was ready fast and the cashier was friendly and patient. A little pricey for fast food, but overall fun experience!

Yelp
Mr.Charlie's is a restaurant that makes food to look and taste similar to one of the most popular franchises(McDonalds) in the world, but with a Vegan twist. I believe they achieve this goal for the most part with their small(but diverse)menu, flavorsome sauces, and popping ambience! My experience was pretty great with staff ready to help me order as soon as I walked in. Although the menu did not have many options, it does have the classic burgers, fries, and 'chicken' nuggets that all taste delicious. My favorite item was the 'Not a double double' Burger. It's a basic vegan burger with two patties and the essentials (but for the price I wish they would add lettuce or some more veggies). I was not a big fan of the 'nuggets' by themselves, however the sauces they offer do complement the food so well that I highly recommend adding a sauce or two. This place is perfect if you're trying to show a hardcore meat eater that they can still have junk food that's plant based. Love the place & concept, but honestly it's a little pricey for what you get. There weren't many places to sit inside so we ended up taking our food to go. However, I do like the decor, and how they use the space. It's such a cute place to have a first date or something. I look forward to visiting this restaurant again!

Yelp
Review based on delivery. It's funny the SF location hours are 11:11am - 10pm/12am. We decided to try food from here as we finished ordering McDonald's and wanted to compare food from both places. We got the Not A Cheeseburger: Plant based burger patty, vegan cheese, pickles, onion, ketchup & mustard and British chips - just fries that reminded me of in-n-out fries so still a win! Definitely would try their sauces next time! The burger was interesting in a good and bad way but for vegan eaters this would be good! Overall, we would try this place again but would we go out of our way to get food from here? Probably not. Maybe on our next McDonalds delivery order we will try more options but we did agree that we wanted to try the food while it was hot! The company history and slogan of @mrcharlies is pretty funny and interesting too!

Yelp
My first time here and it did not disappoint! The Not a Cheeseburger and fries were soooo good and absolutely satisfied that fast food craving. The nuggets were not great, but I didn't come for the nuggets anyway! The peach soda was refreshing. One thing to know ahead of time if you plan on eating there--no bathroom, but at least there is hand sanitizer next to the order screen.

Yelp
Food 5/5 Service 3/5 Ambiance 5/5 VIBE: - across the street from a mcdonalds, savage - definitely a fast food interior, the booths are good for big groups - tastes just like mcdonalds but no animals had to die (10/5) FOOD: (all vegan) - not a double double meal, comes with nuggets, fries, double burger, and a drink (Mexican coke here) (5/5)

Yelp
Cute spot in an area where there's not a lot of vegan options. Parking sucks but if you go on a weekend midday, you should be ok. The touch screen ordering was down and there was nobody behind the counter so I wasn't sure how to order at first. I got the not a cheeseburger frowny meal with a water. The water was dented. Not a big deal, but lacks attention to detail. It was $17 before tax which felt like a bit much for what it was. I prefer other vegan fast food spots like burger patch and plant power, so I probably won't go back. But I'm glad it's there and I hope it encourages people to eat more vegan food.

Yelp
The food was good for fast food, very reminiscent of McDonald's, just plant based. I ordered the not cheeseburger, fries, two not chicken nuggets, with aioli on the side. I'm not a big fan of fast food, but it was perfect considering I had just got into town and was looking for something fast. I also had a United Soda of America - Sour Blueberry which was good. I loved all the primary colors and booths. I do wish they had WiFi.

Yelp
Right across from a McDonalds, Mr. Charlie's offers all the same tastiness, nostalgia, and Americana, but in a guilt-free way. Ordered the Mr. Chuck, fries, and a soda. The sandwich was the standout -- so cheesy, juicy, delicious. Service was fast and pleasant. Would definitely return!

Yelp
I'm not a vegan but was happily surprised to enjoy my meal here. They are located across the street from McDonalds they have the same colors and the look similar to the Golden Arches but serving plant based versions of McKie D's! My friends told me this place is the "Vegan McDonald's," as its menu is a parody of the brand. I got the Big Chuck with the patty, vegan cheese, pickles and onions tasted really good. My meal came into a cute box that resembled the box of the Happy Meal in McDonalds. I bit into my plant-based burger and was surprised at how fresh everything tasted. The bun was freshly toasted, and it was a typical all-American burger with pickles, ketchup, and mustard. The fries were crispy and well seasoned. I wasn't a fan of the chicken nuggets, the texture was a little too mushy for me. The restaurant is so cute. I love the booths and interior with its apple red and bright golden hues. I put myself in the shoes of a vegan this place is a good option if you want a fast food vegan burger. Service was good and efficient, they made my food to order and it took less than 10min. I really want this place to succeed and wish the owners all the luck. Solid 4 stars!

Yelp
We visited while staying at the Grand Hyatt! The restaurant was very clean and we were greeted immediately upon entering. The menu is pretty straight forward. We placed our order and it came out quickly. Everything was fresh and hot. If you are looking for quick and tasty plant based food this is your spot!

Yelp
Lunch at @mrcharlies is a must! They are a vegan (and way better) McDonald's, and they always open up next to a McDonald's, haha! We had the Frowny Meals and they were very tasty! Everything tasted how I remember McDonald's tasting! It's really cute inside too! (instagram: jax.vegan.eats)

Yelp
So...it's almost like nostalgia right?!? Then you look closer and are slightly amused by the witty play Mr. Charlie's pulled off - 1 Star for the giggle If you're in it for the $h^£s and giggles then by all means go for it, I mean I did. Love the bottled coke and frowny meal combo idea -Double cheeseburger, fries, nuggets and a bottle Coke? I'm game! 1 star The burger is on par with "shaking of the shack" IMO. I couldn't really tell because my tastebuds only experienced 15 seconds of delight. So I'm happy to report the burger is good. I had no idea it was impossible meat - so I guess I'm vegan now. 1 Star for eating my veggies for the year. Now on to the downers - I don't mean to yuck someone's yum, but those nuggets are absolutely disgusting. Although, my dog liked it so money well spent. The fries were overly fried and hard as a rock so ehhhhh.... -2 stars All in all I tried it and on to the next.

Yelp
Here you will find vegan fast food reminiscent of McDonald's. I had the big chuck burger which is a fairly good approximation of a big mac style burger, only vegan. A side of fries, that were crispy and freshly fried completed my order. I don't eat much fast food since going vegan, but sometimes you just gotta have a nice burger and fries. Give these guys a try. Its very tasty and satisfying. Highly recommend.

Yelp
I know what to expect with vegan meat, and Mr. Charlie's did a fabulous job replicating McDonald's flavor using the ingredients they use. We ordered chicken sandwich and big chuck, both were layered and sauce very similar to McDonald's. Yes the texture of the vegan meat in there will never be a perfect replicate of real meat, but so what. I also liked their soda and sauce options. I enjoyed the humor of the restaurant with all its decor. The interior looks a bit run down, maybe because the neighborhood isn't the nicest. The night we went, the big ordering screen was broken. We also couldn't figure out what's in the "green sauce" and "red sauce", but green sauce tastes great! :)

Yelp
Vegan MCD was super fun to try, and the decor, art, and interior design made the dining experience feel more like a novelty. I got the not a frowny cheeseburger meal, which came with a vegan cheeseburger, fries, vegan nuggies, and a drink. If no one told me, I would have believed that this meal was all meat. It really did taste like MCD to me!! They only serve canned/bottled drinks, so you can't just ask them for a cup of water. They also don't have public bathrooms.

Yelp
My friend is vegan and dragged me in. The location is dramatic already. It is right across street from MC. I bet they are not happy with it. The food here was not that impressive. The fires are not as good as MC's, their non-chicken chicken nuggets are pretty good, but what I was most disappointed was the burger. Two meals are over $40, i rather go across street. The people here are very helpful and the vibe here is chill, which I like. I will not come back unless my vegan friend is craving for it.

Yelp
First off, the burgers we had were pretty good. We got the Not a Hamburger, a Double Not, and fries. I read that some reviewers didn't like the fries, but when I went there (Friday) it tasted good, hot, and crispy. I like how the menu pictures are the same way the burgers are served, unlike many other fast-food chain giants. I saw how they reuse boxes as customer food trays when people ask for one, and that they don't sell drinks in plastic containers. I didn't see straws either. They didn't have much tables or chairs so we enjoyed our food at the union square which was actually better. The staffs were very nice too and welcoming. They don't accept cash though, and no restrooms either, even to wash our hands. But they provide sanitizers. Vegan or not, you'd like this place.

Yelp
I'd heard about Mr. Charlie's since they (in)famously open up across from McDonalds which is a side eye I absolutely adore. But it also helps that they care so much more about how everything actually looks with a very curated and bold style. The cows up front and the neon were a fun style choice with a touch of petty anyone could appreciate. The food was solid for a faux fast food option, all of the sauces I tried were fantastic. I often find the vegan burgers and chicken tend to taste too salty to me, but that wasn't the case whether through actual taste or by virtue of having a direct comparison. I'd definitely stop by next time I'm out with my vegan friends.

Yelp
Finally tried Fake McDonald's, where everything is vegan and like 3x the price. Some items were amazing replicas (double cheeseburgers), some items were very close (nuggets) and some were even better (fresh sauces). This could replace fast food as we know it, easily! Not a Double Double: An amazing replica of McDonald's double cheeseburger. Like I literally couldn't tell the difference. Thin patties seasoned and seared perfectly. Lots of gooey cheese. And just the right balance of pickles, little onions, ketchup and mustard. Not Chicken Nuggets: Not a perfect replica of the McNugget, but close. The inside was a little too stringy compared to the real thing, but the tempura like batter seemed about right. Like many vegan nuggets nowadays, this was pretty tasty. When you consider the fresh sauces, this might be an even better experience than the real McNuggets. Green Sauce: Herbal and creamy. Very fresh tasting. Good on the nuggets and good on the fries. Chipotle Aioli: Better than prepackaged BBQ sauce! It's got the same smoky sweet taste, but it's creamy. Excellent against the nuggets. British Fries: Kinda the same shape and texture as McDonald's fries, though not as magically good. Still better than other fast food fries (I'm looking at you In-N-Out). United States of Soda - Sour Blueberry: Low calorie, but strong sweet and sour blueberry flavor. Felt healthier than fountain soda.
