The 11 Best Kolaches In Houston, Ranked

"Mr. Donut in the East End does one thing differently than any other shop on this list. They make a large sausage-and-cheese kolache wrapped in a buttery, flaky biscuit dough. While that’s novel, it’s only recommendable to someone who wants to eat an entire stick of butter. The dough itself has so much butter that it falls flat around the sausage, and the whole thing tastes overly rich. But in between bites of still-warm glazed donuts, it tastes pretty good—the same way anything made with sugar and butter does. But for a solid savory snack, stick to the normal-sized sausage and cheese." - chelsea thomas, gianni greene, julie takahashi

Google
The owners are so lovely and nice. It was my husband's and I first time there and they gave us samples of their Vietnamese coffee and Thai tea (both are great) before we ordered, and their Koloches are fluffy and delicious. Definitely coming back when we're in the area!

Google
Loved this place. Was recommended this place by a family member. Gave it a try and was very happy. Still has the traditional feeling of being treated like family. Greeted with a smile and the owner didn't treat me like just another customer. The kolaches are made fresh and practically melt in your mouth soft. Highly recommended.

Google
The man and woman who are running this place are literally some of the nicest people! My boyfriend and I had walked in cutting it pretty close to closing time and both were still extremely welcoming and let us take our time ordering and asking questions. The donuts were also so yummy and HIGHLY recommend the vietnamese iced coffee if you like a really strong coffee flavor.

Google
I'm visiting from New York and never heard of a kolache before but it is amazing! 10 out of 10 definitely recommend! And the lady who works there is so nice! Donuts are really good too

Joshua Briggs

Google
The couple who runs the shop are kind, generous and friendly. The food is delicious and the location easy to find - near the post office on Lawndale. Highly recommended! I like the kolaches, but am always torn between a piping hot jalapeño kolache and the filled chocolate bars. Decisions?! Today I got both ;)

Google

Yelp
I found this place on Yelp while on the way to visiting a customer early in the morning. I was very pleasantly surprised to see their nice array of pastries beyond your typical doughy Kolache and donuts. I was alluded by their "Mediterranean" pastry which was far from doughy - it had good chicken, feta cheese, and spinach in the inside. Yummm!! I ordered that plus the jumbo boudin to try later! And then I got a box of Kolaches for my coworkers. Another unique thing about this shop is that they have Thai tea as well as Vietnamese coffee, banh mi's and more!! I ordered a Vietnamese coffee since it's a rare treat for me. Customer service and timing was awesome. Everyone was friendly. As soon as I got there the line was almost to the door!! But the line quickly died down after a few minutes (I think I tied up the line browsing and adding more items. Lol). I look forward to stopping by again. Please check this place out if you're ever in the area for something sweet or savory!

Yelp
I ordered 1 donut and she gave me 3 on the house she even made the chocolate glaze for me on the spot. the owner's have always been super friendly since they opened. they have a beef kolache for $3 and it was perfect sausage to bread ratio. this small business is definitely worth visiting to grab a snack to start your day.

Yelp
I just needed to pick up food here. Then Asian guys welcomed me. They looked like Vietnamese. Anyway, they gave me the donuts. I also wanted to drink a cup of coffee. It was great. This donut's place looks like a hidden gem. Please order your breakfast here!

Steve P.

Yelp
I love the people who run this place. I go there almost weekly, most often for a croissant with ham, egg, and cheese for myself and a breakfast biscuit for my wife.

Yelp
Went here on a whim. Thought I would try based on the reviews and so glad I did. Their customer service is amazing. The lady at the front counter was so nice and welcoming. One reason to come back but the donuts are so good. So soft and fluffy and what I liked the most is that they're not too sweet. Really enjoyed and will have to come back and try the kolaches she recommend next time.

Yelp
My friends and I got half a dozen kolaches and donuts, both delicious! Great prices and very kind owners.

Yelp
Unquestionably an inviting/welcoming environment with super nice and helpful staff! The kolaches were great. Highly recommend this place. I'll definitely be comin' back!

Yelp
My friends dropped off a kolache and Apple fritter to me this weekend from this spot. It was bomb, so I went in search for it today. I got the large boudain kolache with a Vietnamese coffee. I also got to meet the owners, Sam and his wife Cindy, they're super sweet and made me feel welcome. I know they know their customers because Sam knew it was my first time in. Once I got to my office to devour my Kolache I see they threw in an iced blueberry cake doughnut. I already planned to support, but with that level of friendly neighbor customer service I will without a doubt be a regular. Try them out, you'll be glad you did! Also, look out for the artichoke tea coming soon with many health positives!

Yelp
Moved to the area and tried this shop off a search from I maps. It's by far the best in the area (and I've tried them all). The owners are welcoming and the donuts are great.

Yelp
So this is only the second time in About 10 months since I've been to this donut shop, only because it's too far from my home but the business remains top notch. Same great customer service and the owners make you feel like family. The donuts are fantastic with a certain type of crisp and moist taste that just melts in your mouth. They even gave me two free donuts with my order. Get down there and really support this business. You won't regret the experience. Thanks guys and I'll see you again ASAP.

Yelp
Nice mom and pop shop! Donuts are really good and fresh, and they take their time to put the icing and sprinkles on beautifully. The kolaches are incredibly soft and fluffy. The owners are super friendly. And the location is very clean, virtually spotless. Highly recommend!

Tania S.

Yelp
The best Most amazing donut shop ever! They made you feel like a Family! Please come and try this place your gonna love it!

Yelp
i got a breakfast croissant with bacon egg and cheese fire. The lady asked since it was my first time in if i would like to try a donut and got me right with some donut holes warmed up and everything. 10/10 they're so kind and food is amazing and affordable definitely coming back to try the bahn mi and thai tea

Zoie C.

Yelp
This is the best little spot! Very much your neighborhood donut shop, in terms of their offerings, plus a few extras. The kolaches are solid- I got the small sausage and cheese, and small sausage cheese and jalapeño. The ratio is more bread to meat, but the bread is really good on it's own. The donuts are also really good, or at the least the one I had, and I'm not even really a donut girl. I got the plain cake with chocolate icing. It was perfectly crispy on the outside and soft in the middle, and the icing was a little gooey. I enjoyed it! I also got a Vietnamese iced coffee, which was perfectly rich and a little bit chocolatey, and the sweet lady threw in some cinnamon sugar cake donut holes. Three minutes from my house, really solid breakfast options, and great customer service? I will definitely be coming back! They also offer Thai tea, bahn mi, and fried rice. Planning to come back for lunch some time to try those out.

Yelp
Hands down, the best Kolache shop in town!! Their great service and kindness reflects in their food. Highly recommend!!

Yelp
Don't have a picture of the donuts because there is none to after happily consuming all of them in one take. Looking for a airy fluffy not oily or greasy donut that you can taste the dough? This is the one that tops other chains. This particular store is the one that crushes the consistency. Although quiet and understated, they come out producing a finely crafted donut. Product to me speaks more than the service... the product is wonderful and the people here match what their product offers - excellence in my book.

Bianca G.

Yelp
Love this place! Freshly baked goods! The owners are so nice and it's clean! Great place for an early bite too!

Kyle T.

Yelp
My favorite donut place of all time. Everything is good here, very friendly people that just give you energy and positive light. Will be coming back no matter how far I am

Yelp
I'm mixed about this place. After reading through their reviews, I looked forward to stopping by and grabbing donuts and Kolaches for my work team. I ordered half a dozen of donuts and Kolaches. The donuts were extremely overloaded with sugar and was too sweet. The blueberry donut was nothing special and it was too dry. I gave this place 3 stars because my coworkers liked some of the donuts. Some of the reviews even mentioned getting something extra like donut holes on top of their order. I thought surely with me ordering a dozen from their shop and being new, I'd get lucky but did not. I thought I got the jumbo kolache separate from my half dozen kolache order but realized when I got to the office, I didn't so the cashier must have forgotten to put it in my box. They also offer to warm up your Kolaches. There's a biscuit kolache that is a honey biscuit or something and that was NOT good. I ordered variety of the Kolaches that's part of the half dozen offering. The sausage they use was dinky size, too salty, and the cheese tastes fake. There also wasn't enough jalapeños and the bread was average tasting which took up most of the kolache space. Hruskas on the way to atx is what we compared mr. donuts kolaches to. Perhaps they should stick with donuts as their focus. I scratch my head because I'm not sure why the other reviews raved about their Kolaches. I came in at 7am expecting to taste freshly baked goods too unless I got day old Kolaches or something. I won't be coming here to treat my coworkers or anyone.

Yelp
Food: I wasn't expecting much but it was amazing! You know it's a good Kholache when it still tastes good cold! Kholache: The croissant of the croissant kholache soft and the butter flavor was not overly buttery. The regular kholache also had a lot of flavor and had a good meat to bread ratio! Donut: I had the old fashion cake donut. It was a bit dense and was not overly sweet. The employees: The owner was very nice and helpful when I asked for his opinion. Deals: Monday: 89 cent kholaches Tuesday $1 for 2 glazed donuts

Yelp
Very tasty kolaches with a twist on this concept using Mediterranean toppings as kind of a pastry/mini-pizza style that was quite delicious. Also had the pleasure to try their apple fritter. This is a drier style fritter from some more traditional filling perspective but still with good flavor and just enough filling to keep it interesting. This was my first time but the two people running it were very peasant and clearly passionate about their food and trying to make it all tasty every day.

Yelp
Such nice people, yummy food, opens at 6 am on weekdays so it's convenient. Love having them in our neighborhood!

Alberto H.

Yelp
I was hungry and had to get to class in 30 mins, so I pulled up to this donut shop near my house. There I found the owner having conversations with customers. He was pretty cool and welcoming. He complimented my truck and when I went inside I met what I assume to be his wife. she asked me about school and gave me words of encouragement and overall told me good luck, hearing any type of motivation really helps me get through the day and it felt really nice to hear that in the morning. I bought two kolaches and I didn't even notice she put in a free glazed donut. This is the first review I ever written because overall I had a really nice experience I wont forget. Thanks for the words of encouragement!

Yelp
Always clean. Always friendly. Always doing something a little extra for customers. I love coming here to get goodies for my office. Their donuts and kolaches are great but the real deal is their fried rice. SO GOOD!

Yelp
So I found this place on Yelp about a month ago and I have been there almost every morning since (even though it's totally out of my way going to work). It's owned by a husband and wife that are as sweet as can be. They actually take the time to get to know all of their customers. Everyday I come in they ask me how's work and school going (I only had to tell them once). Very cool vibe in the morning, especially since I'm not a morning person. Now, the most important part... THE FOOD! Most people in Houston will tell you Shipley's has the best kolaches. Those people haven't been to Mr. Donut. They have the croissant kolache that will knock your socks off. And they donuts are soooo fresh and they even have one with fruity pebbles. All in all, this place is awesome. If your are ever in the area, or even if your not, you should stop in. Great service, great atmosphere, awesome food!

Yelp
I live in the neighborhood and I love this gem of a donut shop. They have artisan pastries, traditional donuts and my favorite, jalapeño sausage kolaches. They are starting to offer fried rice and bahn mi. The owners are always so nice and remember you. Highly recommended. Give them a try!
google avatar

Andrea S.

Yelp
Stopped in while in town and was greeted by the nicest and friendliest couple who own the shop. They are clearly passionate about their baked goods, and I was more than happy to pick up 3 dozen donuts for our plant in the area. Nice chewy donuts that are not too sweet. Thank you and see you next time!

Ptah H.

Yelp
Had a great experience here this morning. The owners were very nice and the food is great!! Definitely gained a new customer. They also noticed I had on exercise shorts and we had a great convo about running.

Yelp
Love coming this small business with the family there is something for everyone not to mention they have the best Boudin kolache! It's amazingly spicy and delicious if you want to try something new. Also owners are very kind and friendly.
google avatar

Alexa C.

Yelp
Favorite donut place in all of Houston and I was so glad to discover it when I moved to the area! They have my favorite boudin kolaches--the filling is savory, spicy, and just amazing. And the biscuit kolaches!! Yummy, biscuit style dough wrapped around regular sausage and cheese or sausage, cheese, and jalapeño. Fried rice and banh mi are also offered and are delicious. The owners are a lovely couple who always remember you and chat with you. GO HERE...but leave me a boudin kolache, k?

Yelp
Donuts are my thing, okay? I may be accused of giving out too many 5 star reviews too easily, but this one truly deserves it. This place is about one minute away from my house and the only reason I hadn't been here before today is because laziness sometimes prevails with an infant and the availability of a drive-through donut place. BUT, baby is easier to tote around now and I noticed that Mr. Donut has fruity pebble donuts! I'm not normally one for all kinds of additional things on top of donuts, but fruity pebbles really just work for me and their fruity pebble donuts are perfect...as are the rest of their selection of donuts. I think I got almost one of each. The shining star really is their kolaches, though. The biscuit kolache is my favorite EVER and I'm very excited to return for the croissant kolaches and various other ones I didn't get the chance to try today. The couple working there couldn't be nicer. Not only did they throw in some mini kolaches for my five year old, but donut holes too! And on top of that, the gentleman helped me to my car given that I had two little ones with me. This place is a absolutely a treasure in this neighborhood and the kind of spot that would be worth the trip even if I were coming from afar.

Yelp
We catered from Mr. Donut for a large scale event at our school. They privided excellent, friendly service and made sure that our order was completely correct. They even gave us free fritters as a thank you. They do accept tax exempt forms. The food is excellent all around. Our fellow students were shocked at how great the doughnuts and kolaches were, and we were happy to provide the location's name. This has become our go-to doughnut/kolache catering place. Support small local businesses like these. Mr. Donut is my favorite Houston doughnut

Yelp
This is a phenomenal donut shop! The people that work here are so friendly and kind. Everything in here is spotless and the donuts are pretty good too.

Yelp
This place is fantastic! We tried the chocolate with sprinkles, coconut, fruity peoples, and coconut and loved them all! It's a super clean donut shop too!
google avatar

Lance P.

Yelp
We opted to try the biscuit kolache, Do-Nuts and coffee, everything was good however the kolache was the best I've ever had, so so good, the lady at the register was so nice and kind, we will definitely go back
google avatar

Alberto D.

Yelp
If you plan on picking up breakfast here make sure it's over 5 dollars. That's there minimum when paying with credit or debit. I absolutely dislike places with minimums.

Ann M.

Yelp
Family run friendly shop. Exceptionally clean. Limited offerings but all super fresh. I recommend.
google avatar

Cha C.

Yelp
This is one of the best donut shops in on the East End. I love Mr. Donut's Jalapeño Boudin Kolaches and their service is impeccable.

Jake C.

Yelp
This place is great. Great Kolaches & great Donuts. They'll even warm up the kolaches for you if you are going to serve them immediately.

Natalia V.

Yelp
Came here an a recent visit to Houston. I love their Kolaches. I got the original kolaches with sausage and cheese and the croissant kolaches and they were both great. I had to get a dozen to take home and share. When I placed my order the owner was nice enough to also give me a half dozen donuts to try. This included their Fruity Pebbled donut. I'm not big on donuts for breakfast but I made an exception and I did not regret it. It's delicious and I enjoyed the added crunchy texture. Definitely coming back on my next trip to Houston! Thank you Mr. Donut!
google avatar

Daniel V.

Yelp
Still amazing as the first time. Great variety and amazing flavors. Strongly recommend.
google avatar

Brad B.

Yelp
Everything anyone could want in a donut shop! Friendly service, fresh donuts and fresh coffee! I haven't tried the Kolaches yet, but the Apple Fritters are fantastic!

Diego G.

Yelp
Great service. Nice people and the food is delicious. Fair price and lots of food variety.

J G.

Yelp
These guy's know how to make a donut. Consistency is the key. If you want a real donut this is the place to go. The glaze is nice and thin the donut it self is nice and soft ( glazed donut ). I gauge everything on how real food use to taste like 50 years ago and Mr donut taste like what a donut should taste like.
google avatar

Natalie D.

Yelp
Love the service here! The kolaches are awesome and the owners are very attentive and sweet. They always throw in something extra with an order. Try the blueberry cake donuts with some coffee.

Yelp
Just got done trying their kolaches - amazing. I moved here from Dallas last year and have been on the hunt for kolaches similar to the ones found in the Richardson area. Richardson is a suburb of Dallas and has many Asian owned donut places with kolaches made in a particular way. Haven't been able to find anything similar here in Houston until this morning. I literally drove all over Houston looking too - sometimes eating at multiple donut shops in a morning, heh. Nothing I found so far compares to this place. This will be the ONLY place I'll go to for kolaches moving forward. Check them out to see how kolaches should taste!
