The Best Fish and Chips in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"Located in the Balboa Mesa shopping center, owner Sam Chou’s ‘chippy has been around since 1969 and does exactly what it says on the tin. His most popular menu item is the two-piece fish and chip option ($16) — regulars contend that the light, tempura-like batter and fresh and flaky cod make this rendition of the dish stand out in a city not known for its lack of superlative seafood. Meal options are plentiful, with one, two and three piece fish plates ranging from $10.50 to $21.50. Visitors looking to feed the entire family can order combination plates with up to 16 pieces of generously sized chunks of cod served with fries." - Roxana Becerril

Google
I absolutely love fish and chips and was excited to try this restaurant due to the name alone. The owner was so welcoming and kind! He kept checking to see how the food was while I was eating & if I needed anything. The food came out fresh & piping hot in about 15 minutes. While the fried fish was good, I’m not a fan of the batter. Something about it reminded me of Long John Silvers. Both pieces of fish were long & thin. The fries were seasoned well, but they were rather thick. The tarter sauce was good, but it did not taste like traditional tartar sauce. I enjoyed my meal, but I’m not sure if I would eat here again. It’s an excellent restaurant, but just a matter of personal preference.

First time here from chicago! And the fish was Soo goooddd! Clean, delicious and great customer service! I recommend! They have inside and outside patio and beer! Love it!

Google
Very friendly. Very popular. Very delicious. The best Fish and Chips I've had in San Diego County.

Google
The place looks like a mess beyond the counter, we were a little skeptical before ordering, but once the food came in, it was delicious!!! Good talk with our server/owner? Very good customer service..

Google
Great service and great tasting fish and chips made fresh to order. The ratio of breading to fish was just right and the chips were the right proportion and crisp, too. They include all of the condiments (ketchup, vinegar, tartar sauce). Highly recommend this spot if you have a craving for fish and chips in San Diego. All of their orders are prepared take away (to-go containers), but there is limited seating inside and a couple of patio tables outside.

Google
Definitely the best Fish & chips restaurant in town, perhaps the only one authentic fish and chips in the area ? It tasted just like the fish and chips I had in London, needless to mention the food, also the owners are really nice and the service was just amazing, and the price is pretty reasonable, I really think they should charge more for their food. Absolutely 5 stars. I would definitely come back again for sure and bring tons of friends. It was just great !

Google
Wonderful fish and chips! We are visiting from Arizona,so happy we came to this spot to enjoy fish and chips! The portions were plenty. We were so full! The owner was the best and so so kind! You took such good care of us and made sure we had everything we needed!

Google
The breading they use is great, like tempura style almost which is interesting to me because it's lighter and not as bready as other fish and chip shops. Since the breading is lighter you really get the nice flakiness of the fish, and so far it's never tasted or smelled fishy to me, always fresh and appropriately firm. Also, I think they've got the best onion rings I've ever had but unfortunately they're not always on the menu. The owner's customer service is also great. Definitely a place I always have on my radar for good takeout food.

Yelp
Best fish and chips spot in San Diego! Only been here twice and the owner recognized me and my coworker! Also the best costumer service I've ever experienced this guy is a 2 man operation with him and his mom so he's very busy and still takes his time to make conversation and he even gave us extra food!!!!!!!!! Must try

Yelp
Our first time grabbing food here and I had to leave a review. I think the person manning the register is the owner and he was kind and personable. I don't think I gave any indication that we had never been there..but he asked us how we were and made the statement of it being our first time. It's obvious he talks with his customers and has a great memory. I'm thinking when we come back, he would remember us While taking our order, he asked if my four year old would like some water. Then when he brought out our food, he gave my kids a couple of small pies. Things like that stick out to me, especially as a mom. It really pulled at my heart that he went out of his way to be kind to my kids. Now, on to the food! At first, I thought it was a little pricey until I saw everything. The fish are HUGE! There were a decent amount of chips/fries and were delicious! We got the 8 fish family meal with a side of zucchini. Perfect crispness. We were also given a good amount of ketchup, ranch dressing, tartar sauce, and malt vinegar without having to ask. We'll be back again. Keep it up with both the great food and amazing customer service!

Yelp
This is one of my top five places to go for Fish and Chips in San Diego. It is what they specialize in and they sure know how to do it right. The owner is nice and friendly and provides good service. It is a small restaurant and you have the option of eating inside or on the patio. No reservations and seating can be limited so we usually go after lunch rush hour or early dinner. The fish is always hot and crispy and the fries are yummy and well seasoned. What I like about the fish is it has a light batter. We order the cole slaw which complements the fish. They also offer shrimp, oyster, clams and chicken strips on the menu. I will have to try the shrimp one of these days and deviate from the yummy crispy fish. They offer condiments like Vinegar and Tarter sauce to go with the fish. Definitely a place to check out if you like Fish and Chips.

Yelp
The owner is super nice. Very efficiently running the entire place by himself on a Friday evening! Fast service - about 14 people ahead of us and some Door Dash ready to be picked up; still only took about 15-20 minutes to get our food. Classic fish&chips done to perfection - nice and crispy breading, not overdone. Takes my back to the old "H.Salt" days! Yumm!

Yelp
Mr. Fish and Chips is aptly named! I came on a Saturday afternoon with one of my friends who had been wanting to check it out. We walked in and proceeded to the ordering counter. We looked at the menu and the 2 piece seemed like it would be filling for one person. We each ordered that and a root beer. The owner behind the counter was efficient and multitasking as he went from frying fish to taking out orders and then back to frying. There's one longer table inside and another smaller one. There were more tables outside but we wanted to stay out of the wind. We waited at the longer table since the smaller one was taken. There were a few others who sat there too but as it seems most people order to go, they would receive their orders and leave. We shortly after got our food. I'm not normally a fan of tartar sauce but this one is worth trying! They also had condiments on the table like the vinegar and ketchup. My first impression when I took a bite was that it was slightly more breaded than I would like but as I ate it, it worked for me. It's hard to find a good fish and chip place nowadays. I live in the Bay Area though so I'd only be able to come here when I'm visiting. That being said, it was a lot of fish and fries and I was more than stuffed by the time I got up with a to go box of leftover fries. The fish was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The fries were also crispy and plentiful. The owner is active and would ask people if they needed boxes, open doors when he could to let people in and out and also delivered the food to each table. Parking is easy here as it's part of a strip mall. I suggest trying this place out if you are in the area and wanting fish and chips. I know I'll be back if I'm ever in the area!

Yelp
Great service and food! Even the ambiance is nice inside, there are two medium tables. I ordered and sat at an outside table- people watching (it's located next to a Vons and many other businesses). The food is great. I had the 1 fish n chips and clam strips. Both were delicious. Honestly I should have ordered 2 fish strips. It was so tasty and fresh!!!!! The batter was crispy, and at just the perfect ratio of crisp to moist tender flavorful cod filet. - not like other places where they over batter. I will be back. Most importantly the service was awesome!!!! Super friendly! Thank you for being in San Diego!

Yelp
Didn't realize we have a really good fish and chips shop in Claremont. Have passed by this place so many times, but decided out of nowhere to try it out. Solid fish, solid fries, solid prices for what you get. Service felt personal and friendly. The tartar sauce is so good. Did not realize I could even tell good tartar sauce, but this stuff is amazing.

Yelp
One of the best fish and chips spots in San Diego. But what makes it better is the service here. Top notch service from the owner. He's usually taking the order, making the food and serving customers. Even checking up on us during our time there. The fish & chips are super crispy & always comes out fresh. The portions are large and it's so simple. We also get the fried shrimp with chips and they're huge. The fries are like steak fries and always comes out hot & fresh. It's a small shop in between other restaurants. It's very simple decor and limited seating. Always come back here when I'm craving fish & chips.

Yelp
Great food for takeout! The fish always tastes so fresh! I really enjoy the food every time I come here

Yelp
Great food. Stopped here for my lunch break with my husband and daughter. I believe the owner was the one who assisted us, he was very nice. Food came out pretty quick. Food was hot and delicious. We shared the 3 piece fish and chips and it was plenty for my husband and I. Will definitely be back :)

Yelp
We ordered two 2 piece fish combos one with coleslaw. Very yummy, crunchy fish cooked lightly. Coleslaw was good too. Service was nice and friendly and brought to our outdoor table. Would highly recommend if you're looking for a traditional fish n chip place.
google avatar

Yelp
Fish light and crisp plus you can get fries or zucchini. I wish he was closer to me. Delicious

Yelp
If you're looking for a good fish and chips place in the Balboa area, this place is worth trying. Their fish tastes fresh and it's big pieces. The batter has the perfect crispy consistency, and it does not overwhelm the fish flavor. If there is one thing that I would wish they'd put a little bit of effort in is the atmosphere and the ambiance of the place. It could use a little bit of touch and setting it up to look more inviting. If you don't care about the atmosphere and just want good food, this place is worth trying.

Yelp
Honestly I wasn't sure what to expect when we visited the store. I have been waiting to try their Fish and Chips for a long time, yet never gotten the chance to. We finally came here one night and the store was quite empty. We decided to order to go although we would love to eat there but the store seemed pretty small inside. The menu is very simple, just like the store name. We had 3 fish with large fries and were completely surprised when handed two huge boxes. Despite we took it home, the food was still very delicious! The fish was fresh with nice batter. Love the sauces that was included, highly recommend trying the vinegar. The fries was also very good. Big chunky fries that fill us up nicely. I would come back again.

Yelp
This was my first time here and there was a line at the door waiting for it to open and I can see why. The fish and chips were so delicious and a great price but also the service was absolutely awesome!
google avatar

Heci L.

Yelp
Fried Fish stick $5.50 has been approved by the offspring. This alone will make me come back. The French fries wedges aka chips were minimal and barely touched, not worth $6. Personally, I like the seasoning and taste of their fried fish stick and tartar sauce. Happy to find a place that's approved by all the family.

Manuel G.

Yelp
This is the best fried fish anywhere. The batter is light, which is exactly the way I like it. The fish tastes great, and they pair it with amazing home made tarter sauce. I also really like the giant prawns with their homemade cocktail sauce. Service is great. I like getting the onion rings and zucchini with ranch.

Leanne Y.

Yelp
The best fish and chips in town. I LOVE this place. The owner, Sam, is always super friendly. It's a great spot.

Yelp
Great Fish and Chips! Lots of cool, authentic decor from England...Food was Great and the Owner was very friendly. I definitely recommend it.

Hillary O.

Yelp
One of my favorite fish & chips places in San Diego! The batter is light, flavorful, and the cook on the fish is always exceptional! The owner is so friendly and provides excellent service! Would highly recommend Mr. Fish and Chips!

Helen H.

Yelp
I was very disappointed with mr fish and chips! Not anything like English fish and chips by the way, the batter was soggy, the fish is probably pollock, way too many fries and the fish was too small! The malt vinegar is watered down!! if you want great fish and chips make the drive and go to Chef Johns Fish n chips in lemon grove!
google avatar

Jon M.

Yelp
The breading they use is great, like tempura style almost which is interesting to me because it's lighter and not as bready as other fish and chip shops. Since the breading is lighter you really get the nice flakiness of the fish, and so far it's never tasted or smelled fishy to me, always fresh and appropriately firm. Also, I think they've got the best onion rings I've ever had but unfortunately they're not always on the menu. The owner's customer service is also great. Definitely a place I always have on my radar for good takeout food. I think 4 stars is actually underrated for this place, and I don't say that often.

Yelp
I love this place! We came through yelp and couldn't be happier. Service is solid and prices are fair. Food is awesome! Highly recommended !

Yelp
Always fresh, great tasting fish and chips. Through the years and a devastating fire they have never lowered their standards and you can taste it in their food. Still the best in Clairemont.

Yelp
We love Mr. Fish and Chips. We have been going there for at least 12 yrs. Great owners and great Food!!! AAA+++ Chris and Dianna Rottner

Yelp
Unassuming small fish shop in Clairemont with delicious fresh fried fish! Parking Located by the Von's and CVS strip mall, plenty of parking. Service/Wait Time/Aesthetic It seemed like most people were ordering to go, there's only three tables inside and a few more outside. The man taking my order seemed very friendly and there was no wait to order and the food came out quickly! Double Catch Combo I liked the fish and shrimp I got- the batter was perfect and the fish piece was a good size and so were the shrimp, definitely jumbo-size shrimp. The chips were also fried well and tasty. Both were definitely made fresh to order. My only note would be they were out of coleslaw, so I got potato salad. The tartar sauce and potato salad do not taste like they're made in-house- more like the kind you would buy next door at Von's. Overall, I would recommend Mr. Fish and Chips as a local gem for fried fish!
google avatar

Jade N.

Yelp
I'm town visiting from the Bay Area and i this place looked good! Immediately walking in, the place is filled with regulars! I asked what to order and they all in almost unison recommended the classic fish and chips! This, and I'm not exaggerating...is the BEST fish and chips I've EVER HAD! It's not greasy at ALL, and the texture and quality of the fish is literally so perfect. My tummy is so happy...the only bad part is I wish I ordered more!!!!!! I'm definitely going to come back before I leave and will visit every time I'm in San Diego!! Thank you Uncle Sam for being funny, kind, and making delicious food!!!!!!!

Yelp
I arrived at Mr. Fish and chips in San Diego at 12:30 today. They were already busy ordered the two piece fish and chips meal with hush puppies and a Coke. The meal was amazing. I don't know what batter they use, but it is amazing batter the malt vinegar for the fish and the chips were great Tartar sauce was amazing. The gentleman that waited on me I believe is the owner great customer service very friendly and very attentive to your order and brought my order to my table, which is amazing. I will definitely be going back.

Yelp
I like to travel and I am sure that many of you can relate of trying great food in your travels. The bad part is that you know you cannot get that same food upon your return back home. Travelling is where my fondness of fish and chips with some mushy peas came from. It is one of my favorites to get when I am in the right area and I know there are those who know what they doing when cooking this famous British staple. So on one of my gastric excursions, I decided to try Mr Fish and Chips. Yeah the names says it all and of course you know what I was going for. This place is located in a corner spot of a shopping center Clairemont Mesa East. Parking is so so because this place stays busy but even you do not park right in front of the place you can find a spot no more than a minute walk in one of the rows. Now I will tell you that once you have sampled food a certain way you come to accustomed to it that way and how it should come. We all know there are those who consider Taco Bell to be authentic Mexican cuisine. Bless their heart. It was like that when I entered this place. I was expecting hand cut chips (crisps) aka fries and some pollock, cod or haddock battered and fried served up on some imitation newspaper. Nope. It was crinkle fries and fish that I am not sure what kind. This is the part where you think I am going to write about my disappointment. The good thing about getting fish in many places is that it cooks quick and really no reason it should not be coming out hot. This was the case here. The fries and fish both came out hot and thank you for not cooking the fries in the fish oil. No mushy peas but you do get coleslaw. The pieces were huge and despite getting it to go it was still nicely warm when I finally got back to eat it in piece. Trust me you do not want to bite into this when you first get it unless you like some burns. I am not a fan of crinkle fries but they were ok and good. The star was the fish. Seasoned well and made to order. Many times I have had fried fish it is overcooked especially if you get shrimp or prawns with it. When overcooked the batter is overly hard and tough to bite into. As you figured out it is not what I was thinking or come to know as fish and chips but there was no disappointment in what I got. Now I will say that there are some "British" pubs in the San Diego area that claim to serve authentic fish and chips but they landed way off target and do not compare to this place. My experience with them in a soon to be released view. I will say that this is a place I would drive to in order to get some good fish fried properly. Not labeled a fast food spot but the food comes out quickly. The owner was there that day and very nice guy who of course said he had some good fish and applause to him. We all know everyone's baby is not cute.

Yelp
Fish was fried perfectly & the batter wasn't too thick. It was very juicy inside as well. Very nice people working there. They have seatings inside and outdoors.

Yelp
We got Mr. Fish combo (2 fish filet $17.99) and Seafood combo (1 fish, 5 scallops, 1 jumbo shrimp $19.99). Both came with fries, Cole slaw, and bunch of dipping sauces. Also got a can of soda. I have to say, I wasn't a fan of the batter. I prefer smooth thin crisp batter like tempura. This was crunchy bubble batter. Also no favor. The service was great. It was served in donut boxes. Used as a carrying case and then you'll get the lid for take out. This place was a tiny space and no AC. Outside was more hot than inside but I was sweating bullets inside. The restroom was open to the public. Couldn't wash my hands. Instead, they had wet wipes and sanitizer.
google avatar

Nite Grind T.

Yelp
Good food. The best large tempura shrimp I've ever had. I almost didn't eat there because I went there specifically to try the popcorn shrimp. Well, he was out of popcorn shrimp. My wife, being bold, said let's get the large shrimp. Glad we did. it was flavorful. I wouldn't call it a 10 star eatery but it's a good meal.
google avatar

Reyna P.

Yelp
Small little mom & pop eatery with delicious fish and chips. There is ample parking, but it's a little chaotic because it's a shared parking lot with Vons and a bunch of other shops. There are a few tables inside to sit and eat, but we decided to get our order to go. The gentleman at the register was very friendly and took our order quickly. The menu is small, but that was fine with us, it just means that they don't try to stray away from what they're good at. The fish was beautifully fried. Nice and crisp without being overly breaded or greasy. It was delicious. The fries were crisp and yummy. The vinegar and tartar sauce were delish. The price was reasonable for the portion size. We will definitely be returning.

Yelp
Amazing service! Fresh food and quick. Calm restaurant. Music was easy to listen to. Took me a few minutes to order but they were attentive easy to talk to. Very personable. Would highly recommend to anyone who wants great service and a calm easy going atmosphere.

Trisha S.

Yelp
The best fish and chips in San Diego. Great portions, perfectly fried and not greasy. The owner is super nice to all of his customers. You have to try this!
google avatar

Niko N.

Yelp
Wife and I came here 15 minutes before closing and the owners of the store were extremely nice. Usually restaurants like to rush customers close to closing time. Ordered the jumbo shrimp and the fish and chips. The jumbo shrimp and fish were battered to perfection...a little light of seasoning but still very good. The fries were okay, tastes like frozen fries you purchase at a grocery store. The inside is really small, has a few seating but definitely a spot to pick up food and go. If you're looking for a spot to eat something light and easy Mr. Fish and Chips is a must!
google avatar

Erica P.

Yelp
Grandma has long been raving about Mr. Fish and Chips, and we finally got the chance to go there for lunch together today. Arrived shortly before noon, ordered the 3-piece combo to share, 2 drinks and sat outside on the nice patio. 10 minutes later our order arrived - the batter on the fish was crispy and perfect! Chips, coleslaw and tartar sauce were all delicious. Looking forward to coming back again with Grandma soon!
google avatar

Lisa A.

Yelp
I am amazed at the quality of the fish and chips here. When I saw the menu only consisted of fish and chips, it sounded crazy but they are that good. You have your option of 1,2 or 3 fish filets with chips. The batter is delicious and definitely reminiscent of those fresh fish and chips you get from England. The food was delivered fresh and hot! It appears to be a dad and son run business, they were very hospitable. There are very few inside seats and it was raining the day I came in so be advised if you are looking to eat there. Tables do not sit more than 4 inside but there is some outside seating. Would definitely come back if I was craving fish and chips again!

Yelp
Excellent fish and chips! Local place tucked into a strip mall. Cooked to order with fries and great slaw.
google avatar

Manny L.

Yelp
Best place hands down for fish n chips in the San Diego area. Very friendly staff and freshly made. The place is small but very inviting and the ambiance is great!

Catherine S.

Yelp
The place has been around a long time They serve great fish and chips and fried zucchini thats great. The price is not too bad especially if you go at lunch. They've been doing business for many years and I hope to see them continue for many more. This is a great place to eat .
google avatar

Audrey M.

Yelp
Yum! Location was easy to get to. There's indoor/outdoor parking. The staff was friendly and the food was satisfying! We ordered a fish & chips, fish, shrimp & chips and battered mushroom. Do me a favor, don't sleep on the battered mushroom!!! Killed me! So good! The fried seafood was crispy and wasn't drenched in oil.. same as the fries. I also enjoyed their coleslaw, it wasn't too vinegar flavored or drenched in Mayo -- just right. Will definitely go back!
google avatar

Jocelyn W.

Yelp
Delicious, I don't know why I waited so long to try this place. Someone told me it wasn't for them, they were wrong! Or, at least, it is for me. I grew up with Long John Silver fast food being fancy (military family) but they're going out of business. This place gives the perfect fried fish and some nostalgia. The coating is crispy, not as heavy like beer batter, but less airy than tempura. It's perfect and unlike fast food, not super salty!! That's what condiments are for anyway! Super casual hole in the wall, limited seating and mostly dining outside.
google avatar

Emmett T.

Yelp
I have driven past Mr. Fish and Chips so many times when I shop at this plaza that it was finally time to try this place. It's not a very large spot as maybe a couple dozen people can sit inside, but they do have a few tables outside the front entrance. Parking can be challenging as you may have to find a spot further away in the lot and walk over to the suite. The menu had more than just fried seafood as I noticed chicken strips were available too. I decided to go big and ordered the Shellfish Combo which consisted of one jumbo shrimp, one oyster, two scallops, and clam strips. My sides were cole slaw and french fries. Right away, I could tell the batter was light and perfectly fried. I don't like it when the breading is coated too thick on fried foods. The server brought out a case holding multiple condiments (ketchup, tartar sauce, cocktail sauce, malt vinegar, etc) for me to use. The cole slaw was a little bland, but the fries were very crispy. The scallops were my favorite item. The combo was a tad pricey, however the quality of the fry made it worth the money.

Yelp
Great ambience, with exceptional customer service; on-time, quality food with tons of amazing options.

Golden Girl ..

Yelp
I live close to this place but had never stopped in, and I won't be coming back. The fish is soggy and the pieces are very small, the shrimp are overcooked and chewy, and the "chips" (fries) are nothing more than Ore-Ida frozen steak fries. Long John Silver's tastes better than this crap so I'm not sure why people are ranting and raving about this mediocre seafood.

Dave C.

Yelp
Friendly service, easy parking. This is always my go-to place for fish and chips when i am in the area.

Yelp
Best fish n chips in town! Highly recommend if you are in the area. The portions are big and the staff is friendly.
