Homestyle Italian food from a BYO eatery in a former hardware store with tin ceilings. Cash only.
"Located in an old hardware store in South Philly, Mr. Martino’s Trattoria is exactly the kind of Italian BYOB that out-of-towners expect when they visit. There’s homemade pasta cooked in a one-woman kitchen, tons of antique furniture, and a staff that treats you like family. Almost everything is a must-order, but choose wisely—they’re only open monthly (as a pop-up). Spots for generously stuffed veal ravioli and scallops in risotto fill up fast, so arrive by 4:30pm or call for reservations on a day when they happen to be answering the phone (which isn’t often)." - candis mclean

"Located in an old hardware store in South Philly, Mr. Martino’s Trattoria is exactly the kind of Italian BYOB that tourists expect when they visit. There’s homemade pasta cooked in a one-woman kitchen, tons of antique furniture, and a staff that acts like you’re a part of the family. The veal tortelloni is a must-order, and there’s an off-menu octopus appetizer with beans that you should ask about before you even look at the menu. The one problem is that it’s not exactly easy to eat here—they’re only open monthly (as a pop-up), and spots fill up early. You have to either get there before prime time or call for reservations on a day when they happen to be answering the phone (which isn’t often)." - Candis Mclean
"Located in an old hardware store in South Philly, Mr. Martino’s Trattoria is an Italian BYOB that checks all the boxes: homemade pasta cooked in a one-woman kitchen, furniture and decor that were probably there when they moved in, and a staff that acts like you’re part of their obscenely large family (for better or worse). The one problem is that it’s only open on weekends, so you have to wait a few days to get your hands on their charred octopus swimming in a garlicky broth and a spinach ravioli that packs lemony ricotta into the warm pouches. Since they’re only open for a few days, either get there early or call on a day that they happen to be picking up the phone for a reservation." - Candis Mclean, Alison Kessler
"Located in an old hardware store in South Philly, Mr. Martino’s Trattoria is exactly the kind of old-school Italian BYOB that tourists expect to see as soon as they step out of Philadelphia International. It checks all the boxes: homemade pastas cooked in a small kitchen, antique decor that’s probably been there since they opened 31 years ago, and a staff that feels more like a family. The one problem is that it’s a cash-only monthly pop-up, so you’ll be in a reservation battle every time you crave warming bowls of tortellini with pesto that will make you feel as snug as a hammock made out of clouds.
