Note: We are very familiar with Indonesian food. Prices were less expensive than Simpang Asia the other Indonesian restaurant nearby- but smaller portions. Also, this was more like Indonesian comfort food- not as gourmet as the other restaurant but still tasty. We are very happy with the other Indonesian restaurant and tried this out of curiosity. Ultimately if this was the only option it would be a great one but probably will just return to the other restaurant in the future.

Perfectly homey Indonesian restaurant! Really delicious food and lovely ambiance. Actually reasonable prices for once in culver while still not skimping on quantity or quality!

for the second time I eat here. makes me want to try everything. the taste is really like home. the longing is cured. the best Indonesian cuisine in this city. Soto betawi enak bangeeeeet 😍

It’s a teeny tiny spot with excellent service and delicious food. I was here for lunch and had chicken sate and goreng noodle combo for less than $20 So good! It does *not* have a liquor license but you can bring your own beer or wine (no corkage fee!)

Had a taste of home (Singapore) at this restaurant. Ordered the combos: mee goreng, Soto betawi, that comes with sate (satay) and Perkedel! Everything tastes like how I have it in Singapore. The only difference is the chilli- could not get the sambal that I usually have in Singapore but that's fine. The chendol 👍🏻. Overall I was very happy to visit during this trip to LA! Authentic and great service.

Satays were fantastic, especially the short rib. Mei Goreng was delicious. Beef rendang was flavored well but a little dry since there were not quite enough vegetables.

Everything we ordered was delicious and authentic. We came from the Bay Area and we were looking for good Indonesian food in LA and we really liked this place. Highly recommended

Great Indonesian cafe. We ordered the Nasi Bungkus & Nasi Kuning, everything was delicious & burst with flavors, loved it! The Ice Cendol had jackfruit and it was yummy. Happy I finally tried Mr Sate. There is parking at the rear, entrance to parking structure is through the alley.

Wow, I'm impressed. This food is authentic. I just came back from a trip to Singapore and Indonesia (Jakarta and Bali) and the food here tastes very authentic similar to what I got in Indonesia. The sate here is actually better than the street food I found in Jakarta and better than the hawker stalls I tried in Singapore. The gado gado tastes just like how it was made in Bali although the peanut sauce is sweeter than necessary, I guess modified for the American palette. I'm also happy to find Emping here! They are these chips fried from these bitter nuts. I discovered it in Indonesia and love them so much. I also tried the Nasi Kuning, delicious and served with 2 kinds of sambal. The sambal wasn't the best but at least they had it unlike other fusion restaurants in the area. Overall, the food here is better quality and cooked with even better flavors than some of the resort and street food I found in Indonesia! In the Palms area, I've also tried Mee & Greet and Simpang. Mee & Greet's food was just disgusting with cheap ingredients, zero flavor. Simpang's too fusion-y and mixed in quality. Their Cah Kangkung (water spinach on an iron griddle) was fire and salmon was good but everything else was mid. Mr. Sate's the best because everything I've had so far has been authentic, flavorful, and delicious! Come here.

the place is quite spacious and once i get in, i feel homie. the owner is friendly. for foods: 1. soto mie: just ok 2. empek - empek: it is recommended ~ so good!!! 3. chicken sate: it is recommended 4. shrimp balado: just ok ~ need more balado sauce if you are indonesian and miss indonesian foods, need to consider this restaurant. four stars...

Best Indonesian food in LA for me! They introduced the dish in a wrap paper. I felt lik unwrapping a gift. We ordered perdkel (potatop) , chiken sati and nasi bungkus (beef ,rice , egg , chicken and greens) very delicious Prices are great! Restaurants cleaness and the service is very great! Staff are friendly and professional. They gave us great suggestions for food. Vines are comfortable.

Casual Indonesian spot in Palms I was pretty excited for lunch here, but ultimately, the dishes were a hit or miss. The corn fritters were excellent--crispy and served with a sweet soy sauce I would have been happy to douse my rice with. The sate was good. They grill each skewer individually by hand, so it does take a bit of time, but the char is worth it. I only wish the skewers were packed with more meat! I went for Combo #2 which consisted of the soto mie, 2 chicken sate, 1 shrimp balado, 1 perkedel (potato patty with filling) and steamed rice. The soto mie (beef noodle soup) was a bit plain. The beef was too well done and the soup could have been richer. It honestly felt more like a side than the accoutrements it was served with. The perkedel was a pleasant surprise. I love potato in any form so I thoroughly enjoyed the stuffed potato patty. I also opted for an avocado smoothie. It wasn't as sweet as what I've had at other places, but still satisfied the craving. If I were to return, I'd likely only opt for apps and sate and skip on the fried rice/noodle dishes. Order at the counter and watch them prep your dish through the open-air kitchen!

Use to pass by this place almost everyday when I use to live down the street, never tried it, now I have been coming here frequently. Food here has so much flavor and great portions. I highly recommend the Soto Mie and the Nasi Kuning. Service is great and ambiance is just a basic mom and pop restaurant. Give it a try!

A lovely Indonesian restaurant with a selection of authentic Indonesian dishes on the menu. Chicken sate was tender, juicy, and flavorful, while the rice dishes were flavorful with generous portions of toppings! Prices and service are decent. Plenty of parking in the parking structure in the back as well as on street. I can't wait to come back to try their porridge and fried rice!

Amazing find! First time trying Indonesian food and I am obsessed. This restaurant feels small and local but the service is great and friendly, and the food is authentic and delicious. I'm glad I came here to rest Indonesian food for the first time, even got the stamp of approval from my Indonesian friend. Will definitely visit again.

Newest Indonesian restaurant from the chef that used to work at another Indonesian restaurant nearby. Service was good. Small dining area. Plenty of parking space in rear or street parking when available. We ordered, few different Sate, off course. Short rib was nice, Pork and Chicken was ok. Need more charred/grilled. It says Balado peanut sauce, which came out Peanut Butter Sauce, as usual. Gado-Gado tasted right. Missing the chips. Soto Mie tasted good, came with risoles. Nasi bungkus came with turmeric chicken, beef rendang and balado egg. The sambal is not spicy at all. Portion wise though, all of them are small thus the price was decent.

Came here on a Monday around 6:30 pm. There were free spots on the street right in front but they also claim to have free parking in the back, I just didn't get a chance to look. The restaurant was completely empty when we went inside but we were greeted immediately and told to sit wherever we like. The inside doesn't have too many tables but it doesn't seem like a lot of people come by. 2 more small groups ended up coming in during our stay and 1 person came to order to-go. The bathroom was clean and had a nice mural on the wall. Service was quick and friendly throughout the meal. We decided to get the bakwan jagung (corn fritters), nasi bungkus (banana leaf wrapped dish), and combo #3 with Soto batawi. We also got es cendol and es teler for desserts. The bakwan jagung were delicious. Crispy and simple and tasted excellent dipped in the sweet and savory sauce. The nasi bungkus had great flavor but we were disappointed that there were only 2 pieces of beef for the beef rendang. The chicken and veggies were plentiful though. Each of the skewers that came with the combo #3 were good and well seasoned, but we didn't like the perkedel (fried croquette) because it was cold, colder than room temp. The soto batawi was tasted good though and had a good amount of beef, tomato, and potato. The desserts were both delicious, a little cold on the chilly night because of the crunchy ice but both were sweet and had good flavor. We were happy with the meal but were disappointed in the temperature of the meal. Everything seemed luke-warm except for the corn fritters and the perkeldel (which was pretty cold). The prices were decent though. I would like to give it another try sometime but I think I prefer Simpaang just around the block. It's busier and has tighter parking and wait times but it would be my first choice because it also has more menu options and prices are somewhat similar.

Great spot for a tasty, easy meal. The combo meals are a great value - I've gotten the Combo #1 and #3, very tasty and the skewers are a must have here. There is no possible way you could leave hungry if you get the #3, for me #1 is the perfect amount of food. I personally think the Soto Betawi is superior to the Soto Mie if you like a richer, creamier broth. Would recommend!

Small portions for sate sticks, but good flavor. Super nice customer service. Family business.

Coming from a Malaysian upbringing, I'm always looking for authentic Southeast Asian cooking to satisfy my cravings. Have had this place bookmarked for a while and finally came with a friend. There's street parking out front and a parking garage behind it. When we walked in, It had a cute interior with multiple tables and looks like it's family owned. We started with the popcorn chicken sate (2 pieces) and I ate it with the sambal. It was crispy and the chicken was juicy on the inside. I got the Mie Goreng and my friend got the Nasi Goreng combo which came with sides including the sate. Both did not disappoint and was full of authentic flavor. Prices were very reasonable and portions were sizeable. Service was friendly and attentive, filling out water and checking on us. I finished my plate clean and I'll definitely be back for more!

Amazing! Order their Soto ayam and their mie goreng! I've lived in Indonesia and I will say this is the closest place to having real, authentic Indonesian food! And also, so so affordable! The owner was so lady to talk to as well :) Highly recommend!

Yelp description of Mr. Sate says they are known for good satay and coconut milk soup. Maybe i should've just tried what they are known for. I tried ordering fried noodle (mie goreng) and it wasn't as i imagined. The fried noodle tastes more like yakisoba than a real indo fried noodle. It has cilantro, sweated onion and carrots. It made me think of thailand and japan back and forth rather than the indonesian taste profile. I tried to enjoy it as is and forgo the nostalgy, but even then the only thing i enjoyed the most was the bits of eggs and the choy sum which is a really nice vegetable commonly used in indonesian noodle dishes. If there anything i would order again based on this visit, it is the tempeh mendoan. They are crispy (which is weird, because usually tempeh mendoan are cooked rare), and tastes amazing with the silky tempeh (yes, you got that right. Tofu is not the only silky stuff in indonesian cuisine. Tempeh in mendoan dish is silky because it's a soft tempeh fried 'medium rare'). I love their tempeh mendoan and literally finished it in a blink. Though, at $8, i don't know if i would ever order it again. Especially since they don't give indonesian chilies with it. They only give a small sauce cup of chili and shallots in soy sauce.

Very kind workers, free parking structure in the back, decent amount of seating both inside and outside. We ordered the mie goreng combo and beef rendang, which paired nicely together. The mie goreng chicken skewer was my favorite. Although it felt like something I could make at home if I tried hard enough, I still enjoyed the food.

Our friend who's Indonesian highly recommended St Sate, and after dining at this restaurant we can also confirm it is the next best thing from visiting the country.  Our eyes were definitely bigger than our stomach, no worries because we love leftovers.  The 4 of us shared some appetizers such as the corn fritters, fish cake, chicken sate, and beef rib sate.  The combos are also a great way to try a little bit of everything such as the one with fried rice and the one with noodles mie goreng.  It was my 1st time trying the Sota Betawai which is a coconut milk beef based soup, it was delicious and perfect with rice.  Hubby has been craving bihun goreng which is stirred fried vermicelli noodles, a very simple dish since his trip to SE Asia a year ago. Personally I would also love to travel to Bali again, but WLA is much closer and we will be back.

The best Indonesian restaurant in LA and I mean it. I love how bright and inviting the ambience is because it reminds me just how warm and inviting Indonesian food feels. From the kindness of the owner and the staff to the delicious food made from scratch, you can feel the love with every bite you get. We got a whole feast--chicken sate, beef and potato sate, short rib sate, and soto betawi. All these dishes were so delicious. Each dish was full of flavor and the meats were so tender! My favorites were the soto betawi which was a coconut milk based beef stew and the empal which was a the beef potato sate. I recommend this place to whoever is new to Indonesian cuisine. Prices are reasonable and you're taken care of with so much warmth and comfort, which precisely reflects how the food makes you feel!

Hands down best Indonesian food I know of Pros: 1. My absolute favorite is the bakwan jagung (fried corn). I've only had something similar once ever in Hawaii and this is better. I love corn already, but once you fry it and mix it with this delicious batter it's irresistable. 2. I only discovered bihun (thin, soft noodles) recently while traveling in Southeast Asia and it's hard to find here at home. This dish hits the spot and it's full of veggies and flavor. I added chicken and I like how it also has pieces of omelette in there. 3. The satay sticks are good - I had chicken and galbi. 4. The empek-empek is a nice variation of fish cake that I haven't had before. I like it. 5. Last but not least, the fried rice with corned beef is amazing. It is the best and tastiest fried rice I've ever had. 6. Service is good, our waitress was very friendly and the food came out fast. Cons: 1. The mi goreng is not bad, but I prefer a different kind of noodle. This one is like regular chow mein to me. There were so many amazing dishes so this one wasn't as unique and exciting as the others. I will always pick the bihun over this.

When it comes to Indonesian food in the area, there are strong contenders, including Mr. Sate. Rival to the more-famous Simpang, Mr. Sate holds its ground by serving a wonderful array of sate. I ordered some chicken sate, along with spring rools, nasi goreng, and mie tek tek. Delivery was quick, and we were ready to dig in... The verdict? Chicken sate was flavorful and the meat tender, the spring rolls crunchy and not overly greasy, and the nasi goreng wonderful with chewy rice and plenty of delicious veggies. However, I found the mie tek tek to be on the bland side, the noodles not as flavorful as the ones from Simpang. However, the spring rolls and nasi goreng tasted better than what I've gotten from Simpang, although next time, I'd go for medium heat, as I found mild at Mr. Sate to be not spicy at all. Overall, I'd say Mr. Sate is a new favorite of mine, especially for its sate and nasi goreng. Worth a try while in the area!

Service is good, not sure about the food. Ordered Soto Betawi, w/ added tendon for extras $2. It came out w/ penny sized tendon- for $2? Ordered the fancy Banana leaf wrapped steamed rice & fried chicken leg - with broccoli as main veggies... Man, that made it smell weird No wonder they don't have much business. For sure I'm going back

I've lived by this place for so long but finally had a chance to try it! We went here for dinner on a Saturday evening and sat outside on their patio. It was quite busy with most of the indoor tables taken. I ordered the nasi bungkus and my partner got the mie goreng combo. The food came out pretty quickly. I thought the beef rendang in the bungkus was a little dry but I LOVED the turmeric fried chicken. It was crispy but tender inside and cooked perfectly. My only other taste of Indonesian food is Simpang asia up the road and the flavor was similar overall. The mie goreng was tasty and came with 2 chicken sate skewers and another side - don't remember the name. Portions were overall quite large as well. There is a sign that says free parking in the back, but I live close enough to walk here. There is also street and neighborhood parking. Dog friendly patio and they even brought out a small water bowl for our dog!

After traveling to Indonesia, I developed high standards for good Indonesian food and this place definitely is up to par. It's a no frills place but the service is great. The only thing I'd say is that the portions can be quite small. For example, the Rendang only had 5 cubed pieces of beef. Overall, I would still definitely recommend this place for people looking to try Indonesian food or get their fix in!

Decided to try Mr. Sate after a friend recommended it and I was too lazy to make dinner. Ordered takeout from this mom and pop shop and it was ready on time. Everyone working at this family run small business was friendly and super nice. We ordered chicken sate and DEVOURED IT. The ambiance inside seemed welcoming and clean. I'd love to come back and dine here. Be back soon!

I don't think this place needs any more reviews but this food was simply delicious . I Finnish my plate so fast before I could even look at it . Everything about the flavor sweet and savory just hit your flavor tongue . I order mine gorgeng combo which is stir fry egg noodle 2 chicken slate and a perkedel. The chicken slate is chicken on a skewer with delicious peanut sauce . And a perkedel is like a potatoe patty . Crispy on the outside but soft on the inside ! I'm actually dying to go back and eat more ! Definitely a place you got to go

I love Mr sate!!! Hope this place stays forever. The corn appetizer was so amazing. I love the dipping sauce it came with. You HAVE TO try the beef skewer here it just falls apart in your mouth. The soup is great here too. Very friendly staff :)

As an Indonesian, i do recommended this place for my comfort food. Their soup ( soto betawi) really good, and i love the noodle. Not only this place has a great food but the owner ( the old lady) is really nice, attentive and kind. Her hospitality is impressive. Will definitely be back and recommending this place to all of my friends.

Haven't had much Indonesian food and Mr. Sate was the perfect place to try it. It's a small restaurant and looks like it's a family owned business! My cousins and I ordered Combo 3, Nasi Goreng with chicken, and Bakwan Jagung. We were actually recommended a couple of the dishes and we were not disappointed! Combo 3 has a choice between Soto Mie or Soto Ayam, 1 chicken sate, 1 beef potato sate 1 shrimp balado sate, 1 pork sate, and 1 perkedel, and steamed rice. We got the Soto Ayam. The Nasi Goreng is Indonesian stir fried rice with eggs and veggies (plus chicken). The Balwan Jagung is Indonesian corn fritters made with corn and bell peppers with homemade sweet soy sauce. Everything was seriously so good! We loved the Nasi Goreng and were pleasantly surprised by the Bakwan Jagung. It was so good! The sates were pretty fun to sample and we really enjoyed those too as they're freshly made. I would highly recommend this place to anyone in the area! Nothing but good things to say.

Our food tasted wonderful! Everything was fresh and very tasty. Our server Dixie was attentive, efficient, and friendly . The restaurant is very clean and presentable!

Be careful if you have food allergies. We specifically asked if any of the dishes had peanuts, since I can go into anaphylactic shock, and the waiter told us that all the dishes were safe and that peanut sauce for the satay could be put on the side. The kitchen made a mistake and left peanut sauce on the satay, but since it was mixed with a different sauce and not obviously peanut sauce, I didn't realize and ate some. I started having a reaction and again asked if they were sure there were no nuts. He insisted that it was just chile and maybe garlic, and then upon pressing further, admitted that there was peanut sauce on the satay after all. He took no accountability and still tried to charge us for the meal at the end. The owner did apologize but made a lot of excuses. I spent the night in the ER as a result. Mistakes happen, but accountability should be the bare minimum given that they could kill someone with their negligence.

I missed Indonesian food. Since Indo Café. Closed a while back I haven't found one near me. This place is a hole In the wall. Few tables and very intimate. Food is good. We ordered satay Babi (pork skewered bbq) and Popcorn chicken on skewer. Its chicken coated with flour and deep fried to crisp. Chicken is crispy on the outside and well seasoned and moist inside. Pork bbq is tender and well seasoned. Sweet and savory with crispy garlic topping. We also ordered the Nasi Kuning, never really had rice with turmeric and fragrant yellow jasmine rice. The plate came with egg noodles, deep fried chicken thigh and half hard boiled egg (egg baladí). Sliced cucumber and stalks cilantro for a fresh finish in every bite. Food explosion in your mouth. I would come back again to try the rest on the menu. All for now.

What a jewel of a place! Delicious food, better flavors and tastes than Chinese, Japanese and Thai. Sates melt in your mouth, coconut rice to die for, and soups that are so tasty you don't want them to end. The servers are polite, warm and caring like your mother! Just a great all around experience. We're going back for sure!

Picked up a quick to-go order of the Kasi Kuning which had a little bit of everything. Some yellow coconut rice, a bit of stir fried noodles, fried hard boiled egg, turmeric chicken and other little goodies. Full of flavor and packed very nicely! Made for a good lunch since it was not too heavy and overall good portion. Service was friendly and was quick. The interior is clean with a few tables inside and outside with the weather being lovely lately. Definitely want to try this place out in person another time!

Their sate was good. Just stick to that. Everything else was "Asian Fusion" and catered to a non Indonesian taste. When you see more hipsters then Indonesian dining that will pretty much tell you how authentic it will not be. Get the sate babi. Soto Ayam had an instant pack flavor to it and not made from scratch.

Another authentic Indonesian restaurant in this neighborhood and my go to whenever I'm in the area. I actually prefers Mr. Sate vs Simpang Asia which is also very good BTW, but the flavors of dishes at Mr. Sate reminds me more of home. Some of the dishes we usually get are mpek mpek (fried fish cake), nasi goreng with corned beef, bubur ayam (chicken porridge), nasi bungkus (rice wrapped in banana leaf), and sate ayam (chicken sate). The nasi bungkus is really tasty and comes with the usual items such as beef rendang, telor balado (fried boiled egg with tomato sambal), fried chicken and some vegetables. Dogs are welcome in the small outdoor patio with heat lamps where you can dine with your furry friends. Easy and plentiful parking with entrance in the back alley, go up to the 2nd/3rd floor of the parking structure, not the tiny garage on the ground floor as that one only has very limited space.

The Nasi Kuning was delicious. It had such a variety of flavors and textures all on one plate. Service was friendly and expedient. Eating here felt like we had gone on vacation somewhere far away. This place is a gem. So glad we found it.

Really satisfied that Indonesian food craving we had - after living in LA for close to ten years, I've often found Indo food very lacking, overpriced and generally tasteless. This mother and son runrestaurant is very nondescript and really won us over. We'll be back again!
