Bay Area Favorite Mary’s Pizza Shack Has Filed For Bankruptcy, But It’s Not All Bad News | Eater SF

"Once a sultry cocktail bar and nightclub in Mid-Market, Mr. Smith’s closed in 2019 after its owner cited drug dealing on 7th Street, leaving the space vacant until new plans emerged to repurpose the venue." - Justine Jones

Google
If you’re looking for a local spot that feels like a warm hug, Mr. Smith’s Coffee in Sandusky is it. As a fellow downtown business owner I can’t say enough about this place. The Coffee & Food The menu here is a dream for anyone who loves creative, high-quality brews. I tried the Peppermint Mocha, and it was perfectly balanced—not overly sweet, but with that crisp, refreshing mint finish that pairs so well with their rich espresso. To eat, you absolutely cannot miss their croissant breakfast sandwiches. The croissants are incredibly flaky and buttery, providing the perfect base for the fresh eggs and savory fillings. It’s easily one of the best breakfast bites in town. Atmosphere & Service The quaint atmosphere is what really sets this place apart. It has that charming, "stay-a-while" neighborhood vibe that makes it perfect for catching up with a friend or curling up with a book. What truly completes the experience, though, is the stellar service. The staff is consistently friendly, welcoming, and fast, making sure you feel like a regular from the moment you walk through the door. Bottom Line: Whether you’re a local or just passing through Sandusky, do yourself a favor and stop by Mr. Smith’s. Great coffee, delicious food, and even better people!

Google
Adorable! Friendly and helpful staff! Did great with a 6 drink order and got it out to us promptly! Yummy drinks too! We will definitely visit again if in the area.

Wow, this place beats Starbucks! The day we visited, they had a gingerbread latte special — get a large for the price of a medium—and it was delicious. I ordered the spinach quiche and only wished the slice was bigger because it was so good. The kids enjoyed hot chocolate, and my sister had an egg and cheese croissant that must’ve been amazing because she ordered another. There’s plenty of seating, but it fills up fast. Parking isn’t great—but we lucked out this time. Definitely planning to return and try something from their lunch menu.

Google
Mr. Smith's never fails. Being plant based for 10 years, it can be hard to find options. Mr. Smith's has a dedicated menu for veggie options and frequently has features/specials for the day too. Their vegetarian chili is awesome. I had the chipotle black bean wrap today and it was excellent. One or the best spots downtown you will find for breakfast/lunch plant based options, friendly service, and good atmosphere. 5 stars

Google
Really great experience. Best Coffee house in Sandusky. Centered in the action. Really fresh and smooth coffee. Courteous, patient and helpful staff. Amazing atmosphere in an old theatre. It embodies what great coffee shops need: authenticity, originality, welcoming staff and good product. Amazing ☕️🎢

Google
Very nice local coffee shop, this was our first visit. They had a wide assortment of coffee beverages, and food options as well. We had lattes, a breakfast sandwich, and a quiche. Beverages were very good (my personal preference is a more traditional ratio of espresso to milk, this was definitely the more American ratio, but it was good), and good was good for a quick stop in the morning. Staff were great, and it's a great local spot, I would recommend you try Mr. Smith's Coffee House, whether you are a local or just visiting.

Google
We loved stopping in here for a morning coffee and sandwich. The atmosphere is warm and friendly, and so are the staff! The decoration is great too - I always love seeing businesses that display and sell the work of local artists. Would definitely come again.

Google
I love meeting here with my fellow local poets! It's an inviting space. The coffee and baked goods are both delicious, I love the muffins and holiday drinks!

Yelp
We are from out of town and looking for a good coffee place. We ended up coming here and to be honest I wasn't too thrilled. The coffee was decent, the atmosphere was outdated. The sandwiches are pricey. My friend ordered for his family, they ended up forgetting a drink on his order and still made him pay for it after waiting 20 min. I honestly wouldn't go back. The servers have a rude attitude, they aren't welcoming like the shops back home. I'm not sure if there are any more options around Sandusky. But I would highly recommend going somewhere else.

Yelp
Got a latte, some steam milk for the kid, breakfast sandwich for kid, and coffee bean coated in dark chocolate. The latte was pretty good, just not as smooth as some others I've had. I had the Alex which is a mix of three syrups. It was ok but did have a syrup-y artificial aftertaste. Also their espresso is very strong and felt effects very quickly. So keep that in mind. The breakfast sandwich was just egg, cheese and flour wrap. It was ok, the kid semi tolerated it. The star of this place is the service. Alex was very good. Thr ambiance was unique. The price was very reasonable.

Yelp
Coffee was great and well priced. Lots of options. Service was very fast and it's comfortable in the coffee shop with tables and couches.

Yelp
Oh, Mr. Smith's Coffee House -- where the espresso is bitter, but not nearly as bitter as the barista. My husband walked in wearing his NRA hat, and apparently that was enough to trigger a full-scale meltdown behind the counter. You'd think he asked for a double shot of common sense instead of a cup of coffee. The woman taking his order could barely muster a "hello," let alone basic customer service. Guess wearing the wrong hat is now grounds for bad manners. Nothing says open-minded and inclusive like glaring at people for thinking differently, right? We'll stick to places that care more about brewing coffee than broadcasting politics. Enjoy your echo chamber -- sounds like the only thing percolating there is self-righteousness.

Yelp
My family and I decided to stop in here before going to the park and loved it. When we walked in we noticed how cute the art was and the vibe was awesome. After a wait in line we decided to order some food and coffee. I ordered their pumpkin pie latte, a cinnamon carmel muffin and a breakfast sandwich. My aunt got a hot chocolate and a tea. Everything was fantastic. The pumpkin pie latte was literally the best pumpkin pies latte I have EVER had. Was incredible. You know how the pumpkin spice in those things normally tastes fake? This didn't have it. It was perfect. The breakfast sandwhich was spot on and the muffin was incredible. We loved everything. We would most definitely come back here and would recommend it to you if you're looking for a cute coffee shop with character in the area!

Yelp
The place was poppin. Line moved fast. Place has a nice vibe. We go pour over coffee. They had the flavor I wanted on drip and seemed confused for the request for pour over. We got our coffer in minutes. The "pour over" either was too fast or they just gave us drip.. but it left a harsh after taste and not anlot of flavor. Just for reference, we have had pour over from several coffee shops, so there is experience and history with it. Did nkt have their other stuff.. but if I cannot get a simple pour over done proper... i imagine the rest is just ok?

Yelp
the free complementary milk was amazing it was white and dazzling and also very tasty

Yelp
Uh, what a cute place! Places like these need to survive a pandemic. And I am glad they seem to be with minor adjustments. There is a spacious amount of ...space.....where tables used to be. The place is adorned with local art and its very colorful along with new place mats for COVID regulations. The staff behind the fiberglass asked all the right questions when ordering and didn't forget one thing. The Asiago bagel with egg and cheese was seriously so good. It wasn't like some grand thing, just for whatever reason hit so right. I also appreciated the (ready) iced peach green tea with peaches in it. Big for me. Perfect little breakfast prior to riding coasters. Sucked that there were so many bees when we ate outside. Relentless.

Yelp
This is a cozy, locally owned spot in Sandusky to get a coffee! The frozen hot chocolate is amazing too. It's definitely a great place to stop if you're in the area, or even just need to get some work done on your computer. They have a really good selection of wraps, sandwiches, salads, and breakfast options! Smoothies, tea, lattes - just a few of the options they have as well. The menu is also available on their website too! Everyone is always so friendly and service is fast! Grab your coffee, support a local business, and take a walk down to the pier - a great way to start your day.

Yelp
Coffee is what brought me in. Food is what made me stay. Mr. Smith's Coffeehouse is way more than that. It's more of a cafe. There's a good sized food menu. I came in and only wanted a coffee. I didn't know there was food. There were some things that sounded so good I couldn't resist. First there was the coffee. I ordered the regular drip. This is about $2 for a medium. After this I needed to get some of this food. The special was the veggie burger wrap. It was about $8 and included a side of your choice. This is made with avocado, hummus, and spinach. It was a good size for what they charge. They have a lot of choices for vegetarians including salads. I could go here again. Maybe enjoy it even more when I'm hungry. This is a must stop in Sandusky.

Yelp
Great little coffee shop. I had a cold brew from here and my husband had the mocha and we both loved our drinks. They have plenty of coffee options and latte options.
google avatar

Aileen R.

Yelp
I love the coffee drinks I order to make and I love the breakfast pastries that I order to go. The staff is friendly and willing to accommodate with my texts of what I want to order. An A plus for working with Deaf customers! I liked the bathroom too.
google avatar

Michelle B.

Yelp
A really cute spot to grab a delicious coffee drink or smoothie and a breakfast sandwich! We really liked the atmosphere and the sandwiches were good! Wish there were more GF options
google avatar

Rick D.

Yelp
This is a comfortable coffee shop in a quaint town on the water, the staff works hard, and atmosphere is welcoming. The coffee is decent, the breakfast sandwiches are not freshly made. We travel all over America and our rating is in close comparison to coffee shoppes all over the USA
google avatar

Yelp
Yelp brought my friend and I to this little gem. What a great coffee house. Would be my go-to if I was a local. The atmosphere is upbeat, yet relaxing. Art work on the wall, both for decor and for sale. So many different coffee beans. You can pick out your own beans and they will grind them up for you to take home. More than just coffee...menu seemed to have a large selection of food and pastries. I went with a chai tea. Very yummy and I was able to taste the clove and cinnamon. They have a ton of different coffee flavors....flavors that I've seen or tried before. Lavender, banana rum, s'mores...just to name a few! Service was speedy and friendly. Prices are super reasonable. I will return when I'm in the area again!

Leah S.

Yelp
Very simply OK. Watched barista making my drink let my shot die on the counter. Staff only cared about continuing their own conversation and seemed annoyed when I came back to the counter to purchase something else.
google avatar

Mikala T. S.

Yelp
I would give Mr. Smith's 6 stars if I could. There isn't anything bad here. As someone who doesn't drink coffee, I love their chai, hot chocolate, and smoothies. The food is great, too. The sweet & salty cookie is my favorite treat. There is lots of space to sit and work/talk in the cafe. You can also buy any of the art hung on the walls. The staff is kind, and they get orders out very quickly. This is a local hotspot!
google avatar

Yelp
Love this place. I eat breakfast there when I'm In town a few times a year. Coffee is always fresh and so many choices. The breakfast sandwiches are delicious and very hearty. Friendly staff and clean.

Evergreen J.

Yelp
Rude! No one want to to be lectured about their preference. I ordered a macchiato and asked that it be traditional and not a Starbucks style latter. Of all the years I lived in ITALY macchiato is a short espresso drink with a dollop of stiff foam. Educate YOURSELF and have a lesson in sales. Will NOT RETURN.
google avatar

Yelp
It's our first time in town, so as any good yelper does, we logged in to find breakfast. This place looked promising so we gave it a try. My first inclination was to be overwhelmed, there is a LOT to choose from and a lot going on. Thankfully a large group walked in ahead of us and I was able to peruse the menu. The "Black Forest" coffee was on special so we both went with that along with sausage, egg, and cheese croissants. The drinks were finished first and were delicious! My BF really wanted regular coffee but was not disappointed. How do they make that cute design stay in it the whole time you're drinking it? The sandwiches were done quickly and were fantastic. Just enough to fill us up for a day at Cedar Point without stuffing us. This is the kind of place you can go to spend time and be comfortable. There are couches in addition to tables and chairs, magazines to look for, a free bookcase, art, games and all sorts of thjngs. There was a steady flow of people coming and going. That was the only annoying part. The door buzzer!
google avatar

Patricia L.

Yelp
Great coffee, tea and hot chocolate. Consistent quality and they sell what they brew and you can grind it there. They have excellent cookies for $1 each and great muffins. They have soups, salads and sandwiches so you can do lunch or breakfast They do lots of sprcials quarterly favors and daily.
google avatar

Margaret W.

Yelp
Place is just ok. Overpriced coffee is pretty good. Had a Croissant sandwich.. croissant was old. People behind the counter were rude.
google avatar

Laurie H.

Yelp
I live in California and my parents don't have internet at home in Sandusky. Whenever I come into town and need to do some actual 'work-work', I love coming here. Lots of tables and seating available. Nice atmosphere. Not too loud. Great wi-fi. Yummy coffee.
google avatar

Brian S.

Yelp
The happiness you are reading about here is what comes when you eschew the Standard Chain Fare along the US highways and instead venture into downtown Sandusky for coffee and breakfast. See you next Summer, Mr Smith!
google avatar

Eusei K.

Yelp
From the very beginning this place is a mess: the entrance doors are filthy, the floor is dirty. Inside it doesn't get better: it's messy, noisy, and we could barely hear each other over the din--and they were not packed. The food was below average. With the exception of the young lady who brought the food to our table, the staff was curt, borderline rude. (Nothing like in their YouTube video ad!) I thought a bit over the top to have a rainbow flag outside, but no American flag. After all, people who have the freedom to fly that flag live in a country and the country does have a flag! Well, since they discriminate against the US--and, I infer, heterosexuals--I'm voting with my feet: they will never see the color of my money again. And that is the beauty of Capitalism! ;-) (Now, let's see if my opinion triggers someone and this is removed...)
google avatar

Nathan D.

Yelp
The coffee selection was immense. The flavor was delectable, I went with an Orange Mocha. The patrons ranged from punk rock to classy. The variety was as perfect and beautiful as the coffee. I would recommend this place to any coffee lover or anyone looking for a great vibe.

Charlotte L.

Yelp
Great food and service. Easy place to either sit down and eat or grab food on the go.

Yelp
Whenever I visit my family's cottage in the Sandusky area I always find myself craving an espresso drink. Until I get smart and start bringing my Nespresso machine with me or buying one for the cottage, I plan to continue visiting Mr. Smith's and Gathering Grounds in Huron. Mr. Smith's is right downtown Sandusky and offers a wide selection of drinks and breakfast and lunch food. I enjoyed the homey atmosphere and loved looking at the art by local artists. I sat in the coffee shop with my grandma for awhile and we shared the Reuben panini. It was average. As for a drink, I ordered a soy latte with hazelnut syrup which was heavy on the hazelnut but still good. If you're picky regarding coffee drinks like me let the barista know how many shots you want! If black coffee is more your thing there are multiple choices to choose from. On my visit, there were four coffees, including, to my surprise, coconut coffee. Overall, this place is one of the few coffee shops in the area and is a good choice. It's by no means an LA or Chicago coffee shop (no latte art, no incessant instagramming), but that doesn't really matter when I'm just fulfilling my espresso craving. Lastly, if you're asking "what about Starbucks?", I have been to all the Sandusky Starbucks locations and would highly recommend avoiding them if you are familiar with Starbucks as they will only disappoint you.

Yelp
We made a stop here for lunch, and was delighted to find an interesting menu with good food and most of all that they offer biodegradable straws made from corn instead of plastic. We need more businesses that take on a sustainable business approach to conserve our environment. We also love the fact they have a little free library and a wide range display of art by local artist. It feels like a great community hub!

Laura R.

Yelp
My husband and I were traveling to Cedar Point and got coffee here both days. The black coffee was some of the best I've tasted, and the atmosphere is cozy and welcoming. Prices seemed reasonable too.
google avatar

Rafael M.

Yelp
This is a really cool coffee shop. The coffee is delicious and the food menu is very good. The food isn't bare minimum like most coffee places but neither is it too much for a coffee place. I ordered a chicken club with cottage cheese on the side. The sandwich was better than most clubs I've had. The quality of the chicken was very good; a smooth bite through due to the tenderness. The cottage cheese was good. It had no bitterness to it but only a slight sweetness and softness that made it feel like rice pudding. I enjoyed it. My wife ordered a crumb cake coffee - a regular flavored coffee and it too was good. The muffin she ordered, an apple/carrot mix, had the right amount of moisture when heated. The atmosphere was great. Probably one of the best designed coffee houses I've seen. I greatly enjoyed that the coffee house doubled as a local art gallery. I very nearly walked out with an $80.00 painting. I took a picture of it in case I want it in the future. Things of Note: board games and cards area, free books area (take one donate one). If I lived in Sandusky it would be my favorite place to hang.
google avatar

Laura D.

Yelp
Near the Sandusky Bay, this coffeehouse is situated on the Main Street of the downtown area. Serves your standard breakfast sandwiches on any type of carb (I didn't see any gluten free options, but also didn't look that hard). Serves hot and cold coffee and teas. COVID safety practices are followed, and the staff is super friendly. The walls are lined with local artists' paintings, pics and more that are for sale. Lunch and Liner options looked fantastic, and we would most definitely swing back and grab a bite if in the area again.

Derek D.

Yelp
So good that I visited multiple times during my visit to Sandusky. Staff was friendly and efficient. It was a very relaxing and fun place to enjoy breakfast. Lots of locals so you can tell it's a great place. The coffee and food were both excellent! I wish Mr. Smith's was in my hometown so I could visit every week.

Yelp
You mean there's more to experience than Cedar Point??? THE UP-SIDE: Mr. Smith's is a welcome addition to the main drag in downtown Sandusky. It's open, inviting, offers a nice selection of well made sandwiches and drinks, and friendly service. The space is open - great for people like me who don't like to feel closed in when they write - and the walls are covered in art by myriad local artists. Free wi-fi closes the deal. THE DOWN-SIDE: Finding a downside to this place feels unfair. It's the best coffee shop anywhere near, and I am always happy to hang out here for a while. If I had to be picky, I'd say the hours need a bit of tweaking. The place closes at 6 Monday through Friday, at 5 on Saturday, and 3 on Sunday. It's always full of people when it closes, and everybody has to just pack up and leave. Staying open to at least 6 all week would definitely encourage return business. And, oh yeah... Outlets. They have a good number of outlets on the one side, but the other is sorely lacking. Laptop peeps like me are sometimes hard pressed to find a place to leech off the energy! THE SUM-IT-UP: Mr. Smith's is a great little coffee shop, with a unique vibe. It has a warm feel and seems to be a popular place in the neighborhood. If they could adjust those hours to something more reasonable for the customers, they'd have a fifth star.

Yelp
Stopped by on a roadtrip and ordered a cinnamon vanilla JAVALANCHE.... yummy!!! Sandwiches were good, just a typical sandwich with plain ruffle chips. Atmosphere was cozy n cool, staff was great! Definitely worth the stop!!

Yelp
Verizon fluctuates here for some reason. Rainy cloudy day. First and probably only time here. Goes from 1 bar to 3 to 2 to 1. And won't hold call. Could only stay on Conf call by turning everything off on the phone, ie data, wifi, sync, etc. still flakey but wouldn't drop the call. Very large coffee house. Can't wait to check out menu!
google avatar

Bobbi C.

Yelp
Great service. Perfectly following covid guidelines. The art kn the walls was refreshing.
google avatar

Anne B.

Yelp
Comfy space with loads of local art for sale! Many treats to choose from. Very nice staff that goes out of their way to make sure your order is made correctly and quickly

Yelp
The perfect way to start the day...delicious coffee and a wonderful variety of food options. Pastries, bagels, sandwiches, breakfast sandwiches.... I was so pleasantly surprised to find this place. My fiancé and I went here the morning after going to Cedar Point, before we started our drive home. It's also in a fantastic location! Right by the waterfront. So glad we stopped in this gem before leaving Sandusky! :)

melody j.

Yelp
WORST service ever!! if you want to be treated like crap, this is the place to go! i walked in and was treated very rudly by sarah the owner. She had such an attitude with me because i didn't have a mask on. If she wouldn't have been so arrogant about it, i may have walked bavk to the car to get it, but her attitude....She incinuated that i don't have enough money to spend there. she is very very unprofessional and incredibly snotty. She acted as though she was better than me and that is no way to treat a customer that had planned on spending quite a bit of money there.
google avatar

Jess R.

Yelp
Very much unexpected in a small town. The place has a nice high ceiling, good coffee, lots of fancy coffee and cold drink selections! Cheaper than Starbucks and even has Apple pay!!
google avatar

Olivia D.

Yelp
wonderful latte and quiche for brekkie today! i am used to high quality coffee - rising star in CLE and places like Huckleberry in Denver and Pachamama in Sac. i vouch for this local spot to get your caffeine fix - and the baristas know what they're doing. cold brew looked good too.
google avatar

Yelp
This is my favorite coffee shop ever! All the staff and owners are extremely nice and makes this place what it is. The atmosphere is awesome and you feel at home.

Yelp
Located right in the heart of downtown Sandusky. Great coffee drinks and lots of amazing unique flavors! The food (breakfast and sandwiches) are amazing as well.

Yelp
One of the finest breakfasts around. Had the croissant and flatbread and both were freash and phenomenal. The specilty coffees were delicious as well. A solid espresso. Very friendly staff and inviting atmosphere. Would return any time.

Yelp
The egg and cheese English muffin was really good and they had a nice coffee selection. Friendly staff.

Jessica M.

Yelp
They are so great here. Very nice people, good lemonade, good mochas, good food. I considered trying a new place (I come here when I visit family), but thankfully someone posted a nasty review of Mr Smith's just for flying a rainbow flag during pride month (oh the horror), and that made me decide, why fix what ain't broke? Keep being awesome Mr Smith's!

Emily Z.

Yelp
I got a vanilla cold brew and it was delicious! Such a cute place with a great atmosphere :)

Yelp
This is by far the BEST coffee shop in Sandusky! If you are looking for great coffee and great breakfast and lunch food come check out Mr Smith's!! The owners Trent and Sara are wonderful people and are truly invested in the local community.
