The Best Bakeries in Phoenix, Arizona | Eater Phoenix

"Tucked inside Jerusalem International Market on Greenway Road, Mr. Sweets turns out some of the city’s best Middle Eastern pastries. Owner Michael Shatila ran bakeries in Michigan for decades before relocating to Phoenix, bringing with him a deep bench of classic Lebanese desserts. The counter is stacked with more than 30 varieties of baklava — pistachio-packed diamonds, delicate nests, syrupy rolled fingers — plus knafeh, Turkish delights, and creamy ice creams. Even the savory options shine, with meat and cheese pies that rival the sweets. Prices are low, portions are generous, and the regulars know to load up." - McConnell Quinn

Google
YUM! Stopped by for the first time today and absolutely will be coming back. The owner was friendly and kind. Brought home a tray of goodies. So delicious.

The Dubai candy bar was good last year but this year they made some changes. It's just not good anymore. Cheap tasting chocolate and less filling. Less sweet.

Google
I have to say we really felt cheated by this place. I’m surprised more people haven’t realize how overly priced they are. This ONE tray which you can see we had taken 3 pieces out was practically empty and we were charged $35! They advertise like they charge by the pound but there is no way this is a 2lb tray! We are now sorry that we didn’t check the package before we left. She never weighed it so how did she know how many lbs there were. She just flat rat charged us for a tray that was bare yet the sign says by lb. Not worth the hour drive just to get cheated.

The Dubai chocolate bar was good for the past year until they changed it recently. Some pros & cons: it's now $20 ($5 more than before even though the size stayed the same), doesn't taste as good (less chocolate flavor), & is shaped more neatly. They also sell a large size now, which is $30 & is about double the size of the $20 one. The chocolate shell is thin. I know you're gonna be tempted to, but do not waste your money trying their new Dubai choc in a cup. There were a lot of strawberries, but they do not keep well &, since the choc doesn't have a good flavor, the whole thing tastes off & is not worth $15. Really hoping they improve these things, but I had a feeling they'd get greedy over time & sacrifice the original taste, that brought us in from different parts of the valley, so they can maximize their profit & minimize their cost. Sad to see that time come.

CAME IN YESTERDAY FOR SOME PISTACHIO BAKLAVA. ABSOLUTELY BEST BAKLAVA I'VE EVER HAD! SO DAMN FRESH AND DELICIOUS. THEY DEFINITELY JUST GOT A NEW LOYAL CUSTOMER. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PLACE!

Google
I work for a local food distributor and we order their pastries by the truck load! The baklava is second to none! Always fresh and always tasty! If you love baklava, you have to stop in try all their treats! The ice cream is heavenly. If you’ve never had baklava, what are you doing with your life? Stop in today!

Google
If you’re looking to try the “viral Dubai chocolate”, don’t get it from here. I bought it from Mr Sweets after seeing a girl’s TikTok video reviewing it. Unfortunately, my chocolate bar looked nothing like the one in her video. The filling looked completely different, there wasn’t much of it, and no crunch, and tbh just looked sloppy. She posted her video one week ago so it appears like the quality is not consistent and for $14 a chocolate bar, I would hope that it would be. I also put in the order last Friday, July 26 and it wasn’t ready until today, Tuesday July 30. Honestly, it seems like they just slapped something together quickly even though I ordered in advance. Waste of $28.

Yelp
Got the Dubai chocolate and a couple of other small goodies. Really good! And the guy was helpful in picking the items since there is many to choose from.

Yelp
I drove an hour to have their baklava . It was not only disappointing to look at, I could tell by just looking at them it was no good. So I decided to try a couple before I judge. It tasted just as bad. It was dry and tasteless. Will not be making this long trip back here. There is a restaurant and grocery store all in the same building so you may find that to your liking.

Yelp
Amazing Turkish pastries! We wanted to try everything but we settled on a pound of their baklava variety. They melt in your mouth! So delicious!

Yelp
We bought several trays of walnut and pistachio baklava for our wedding this weekend (my husband is Greek)- they tasted AMAZING!!!! All of our guests were raving about how delicious they were. They were so easy to place an order with. Highly recommend!!!

Jack M.

Yelp
Their location is slightly wrong. They have a big Jerusalem sign but its not 100% accurate on the map. Really good prices for fresh baked bread

Yelp
Wanted a late night treat but im skeptical of baklava because I was so spoiled by my neighbors amazing baklava growing up. I got a chocolate bar and pound of variety baklava. I'm SO glad we stopped here, everything was DELICIOUS. Between my family and I the pound of baklava went fast. I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Of course the most authentic Baklava & Middle Eastern pastries ever in Phoenix! What a true gem! Michael, the owner & baker, is very kind & considerate AND talented!!!! My next wedding cake will be made here!!!!

Yelp
Love Mr. Sweets my girlfriends recommended this place and it is amazing! I come here for their baklava trays to give to my clients and they rave after every bite. Beautiful pastries and the staff is helpful and very kind.

Yelp
Ok here is the honest truth great service, nice family owned business ambiance is middle eastern style store anything and everything is there food, tea pots and tea cups, frozen meats. While the other side has the sweets which is 4/10 when you grab it on the spot. But, for some reason when you order it and pick up it's 10/10. Idk ‍ why honestly. Also there is a restaurant as well I know it's a lot but that's a Middle Easterner store you it's literally a one stop shop. Enjoy

Yelp
Awesome pastries. We tried Baklava and other pistachio pastries and it was delicious. We catered for an event and everyone liked it. Definitely recommend to try pastries from this place.

Yelp
We were really disappointed in this place. We got a container of jelly filled cookies. They were extremely stale and old. No expiration date on the packaging and my lady but into a hair! We left the rest on top of your dumpster outside your trash bakery. The Turkish delight was old and gross. I also ordered a cannoli. The bread was soggy and it was days old. I just read other reviews about your stale old pastries ,so you know it is an issue you continue to serve your customers trash! That is a horrible business plan!!! You all deserve to go out of business. I hate to trash a small business ,but I also hate to feel ripped off!

Yelp
Such a treat - found myself near this little Middle Eastern bakery/grocery store & stopped in to indulge my sweet tooth! I bought a Pistachio Baklava & slice of Cheese Khafeh. Then surprise! Michael the baker gave me a Walnut Finger & a Maamoul Cookie to sample. The Walnut Finger & Pistachio Baklava are familiar: phyllo dough, honey, butter, & nuts. I munched on those right away. Cheese Khafeh is a whole mood: it looks "simple" but put it in the microwave & it transforms. Khafeh's topped with phyllo crumbs & filled with cheese that melts when heated. Drizzle honey on top & it's ooey/gooey/scrumptious. This was my "experimental" order b/c I saw it, had no idea what it was , but wanted to try it. Jury's still out on the Maamoul Cookie: it kind of looks like a madeleine so it's cookie on the outside. Filling is a combo of mixed nuts, rose water & something else - maybe pureed dates - & almost tastes like wine. (3.31.21: I learned from an acquaintance who's Middle Eastern that they flavor them w/ "mahleb." Mahleb is the ground up seeds inside a cherry pit, made into a powder to give flavor of cherry/almond. Fascinating!) This is also a sweet spot to eat LUNCH: falafel, chicken shawarma, gyros and other savory dishes. The grocery story/butcher shop that connects to the bakery features groceries, frozen foods, FIVE different brand of filo/phyllo dough. Love to come back with Middle Eastern/international recipes in mind so I can buy the specific ingredients needed. Definitely an unexpected find!

Yelp
My favorite spot to get baklava! Their warm knafeh with syrup on top is always a go to. Amazing staff, the owner and son were so friendly and quick to help us.

Yelp
Greenway and 35th ave, on the Northwest side. I had been looking for a new sweet place and took the advice of my fellow Yelpers from the "Collections" in Yelp! Ordered a variety of sweets to taste and also a Christmas treat for my Stylist, it was a mixture of baklava, which was mighty tasty and fresh. I got the mixture but you can order whatever you desire and plenty to pick from. It did look like the bakery was also a mini mart and deli, may need to go back and try more items. Service, was helped very quickly and super friendly.

Alan G.

Yelp
Fantastic food, great service, friendly staff. It shares a building with Jerusalem Market, which has tons of variety in foods, snacks, and miscellaneous items from different cultures in the middle east.

Yelp
I wouldn't bother coming here if you want to try the viral Dubai chocolates. They make you call in beforehand to place an order, which I did. When I showed up, there were about 4 people already waiting, and the workers just kinda stare at you. I was told to wait 10 minutes for the chocolate, so I sat down. 10 minutes go by, nothing. The workers were just in the back and none of them came out afterwards. 1 of the other people waiting told me that they called ahead as well and she's been waiting for 40 minutes for her chocolate, and the other woman who was there was waiting for 20 minutes and they were both told 10 minutes. Keep in mind, outside of these 2 people, there's at least 3 more people waiting before me. How are you going to have people call ahead to reserve things and then not even have it ready, plus have people wait forever? Bad customer service. I walked out and left. Based on the other reviews it looks like the chocolates are mediocre anyway so it just wasn't worth the hassle or the time. Go somewhere else

Yelp
Genuinely the best baklava I've ever had, the owner was super nice, I will be making this place a regular spot. It deserves more attention.

Emma A.

Yelp
I was disappointed when I got here I drove 20 minutes thinking I was going to get there and see all the different flavors of gelato like they have on their website I get there and they just have regular ice cream I asked the guy I saw this picture on your website he said that they took it from someone else I was really bummed out I thought I was getting what I saw really nice people tho but I think you guys should take this picture down because that's not what you guys serve

Yelp
I had a slice of heaven pie .. it was some Philo filled with some type of cheese and pistachio on top.. not too sweet , I think I inhaled that slice after first bite .. I will be going back.

Maximus D.

Yelp
Horrible baklava. Some were either burnt the others were bought were old. Can taste the oil that they use. Stuck to the roof of my mouth. Very disappointed, I grew up on this stuff.

Margery W.

Yelp
I came in to see what they had and they gave me a whole jalabi to try. I bought an assortment of baklava and a meat kabob for an Iraqi friend. He said it was better than his mothers! It was fresh and wonderful. I won't go anywhere else.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious!!!! Wonderful bakery and friendly staff. They have a large variety of goodies and everything is good. Clean atmosphere and great service.

Majid A.

Yelp
This was the worst place you could ever go to all the pastries are old, the baklava is dry horrible I would never go back , it's supposed to bring back memories of home nothing here is delicious they don't use gloves i was discussed!!!!

Toan D.

Yelp
Everything is sooooo good. The guy at the counter is really nice and offered samples.

Yelp
Obsessed with this little gem , the best baklava in town, homemade gelato and other sweets! Owner is very nice moved from Michigan, definitely knows his stuff! Great customer service, everything is super fresh and baked daily! Grateful that there is a place liked this here, cant compare to those supermarket bakeries!

Yelp
I drove 30 minutes during my lunch hour to take my son because he wanted to try the turkish delight. Upon arrival, there was a heavy set man at the register flirting with a customer. I only had very limited time to be there and I asked where I could find the turkish delight. The man at the register told me" go over there" as he pointed to an aisle with turkish delight that was prepackaged. We drove all the way there to try the one that is fresher and not in a box. I had to ask this unprofessional man several questions before he directed me to the side of the shop where they have the fresher turkish delight. We bought several kinds of turkish delight and went home. The turkish delight was insipid, very chewy and gave us both a stomache. Never again will we return especially after the unprofessional and uncouth behavior of the owner. I guess he was angry that his flirtation attempt was interrupted. What a waste of our time and money.

Yelp
Dear fellow YELPsters, please know that I do not have a "sweet tooth" that haunts me every day of my life !!! HOWEVER, every now and then, I do crave a sweet dessert (usually bakery-based in nature)... I do not want to consume an 8-oz. chocolate bar nor a 1/2 gallon of ice cream.....I want pastry !!!!!! That being said, I make a "bee-line" for Mr. Sweets...What is convenient is that they share store space with "Palms Kabobs", a Middle Eastern deli/restaurant. OK, OK, let's talk "sweets". I love Mr. Sweet's creations !!!! I appreciate how they maintain and keep their dairy-based fillings refrigerated while they are "under glass". EVERY SINGLE ITEM I have purchased from Mr. Sweet has tasted fresh and "new". In fact, I will probably stop by there tomorrow and pick up something for my weekend !!!
google avatar

Kim L.

Yelp
Exotic and affordable mixed delicacies! It was fun shopping the international market as well
google avatar

Joelle H.

Yelp
The baklava was to die for! The best I've ever had! I will try the food the next time I visit. The owners son was extremely helpful and polite and the place was spotless

Yelp
Super bummed out.i was so excited to try this. Not a lot of people in there and all the staff straight ignored me.i don't know if it was because I'm a white woman wearing shorts and a tshirt in 95 degree weather but everyone else was being served. I was the only person that wasn't middle eastern. After being ignored for ten minutes I finally walked out. Never experienced prejudice and discrimination before but that's exactly what it felt like

Sarah B.

Yelp
Their Baklava is seriously a work of art. It is absolutely delicious. If you love Baklava, look no further.

Yelp
I keep driving past this place and telling myself "you need to stop and check it out". After seeing their treats on FB, I rushed there at 9am with my bf to finally check them out. The man running the shop greeted us warmly as we stood in awe over all the handcrafted deserts. We began ordering 2 of this, 2 of that, and he pulled out samples for us to try before buying. Our mouths were in heaven. He then told us that it would be cheaper to order a tray of 12pc of our choice for 14.00, rather than pay 1.50-2.00 each. What a deal!!! We ordered our 12pc of assorted baklava, and got a huge slice of shredded phyllo dough with cheese. He asked if we wanted crushed pistachio sprinkled on top too...of course we do! 16.00 out the door for 24.00 worth of yummy hand crafted treats. Please check them out, you won't regret it

Kara G.

Yelp
I usually think baklava is way too sweet. Not here. It's perfection!! Get a variety box to go. The staff is very helpful and kind (they are always excited to see us and give my kids a sample). Hidden gem I wish I'd found years ago.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious variety of Middle Eastern desserts (birds' nest, kattaife, and balourieh were the ones I tried) at insanely cheap prices. If you want something different from "typical" bakery fare, check out this hole-in-the wall shop.

Mary L.

Yelp
Heaven. If you like middle eastern food or like to try different foods you gotta come here. They have fresh made Turkish Delight (I have been told several times this is only good if it is fresh made) and other similar treats. Baklava - various kinds with walnuts or pistachios (very different flavors). And gelato / ice cream - very creamy. The flavors we had to choose from were rose water, pistachio, and baklava. We had the rose water gelato - it was wonderful with layered flavors that burst in your mouth. We tried two Turkish delights - one honey and one pomegranite. Both were wonderful and very different flavorings. Again there was complexity to the flavors. They were firmly chewy with a nice texture. We tried two baklava's - one walnut and one pistachio. Again very different flavors - the baklava dough is the best I have ever had and I have had lots of homemade baklava over the years. We bookmarked this as a favorites and will have to make excuses to come out this way so we can stop by again.

Yelp
Best baklava ever you can get in AZ!! :P Thanks Mr Sweets... Wish they have more convince location closer to S. Gilbert :(....
google avatar

Lina H.

Yelp
The flavors are bland and taste bland. It's been sitting out for who knows how long till the sweets become stale and hard to chew. First and last time being there. The pistachio colors are too green looks like grass and can tell they've been dyed ugh waste of money. The customer service isn't that great and no greetings. Save your money and go else where if you want fresh sweets.
google avatar

Tim P.

Yelp
The BEST baklava in Phoenix what more can I say? I don't WANT to write anymore! It's the BEST, end of story!!!!
google avatar

Srdjan L.

Yelp
Staff is very friendly, and the pastries are very good! I would recommend them to anyone to at least try it once. They also have a gyros restaurant in the same facility. Great food as well! Will be coming back here for sure!
google avatar

Chrisopher Banks M.

Yelp
The baklava is great. Plus authentic cuisine I love the chicken shwarma plate! Feels like your visiting someone's dining room at home. Great service as well.

John M.

Yelp
Was looking for Middle Eastern Icecream. Lebanese or Turkish which are "chewy." This store makes their own icecream and it was excellent with the correct texture. We ended up getting a variety of pastries too which were delicious. As we were leaving we noticed the other half of store offers hot food and decided to try a carry out. One of the best Gyros I have had and my wife had a Falafel sandwich which was too spicy for her. We will go back to sample more of their menu.

John M.

Yelp
Our favorite go -to place for middle eastern pastries. Also has "chewy" middle eastern ice cream ( I love the texture in ice cream). AND sharing the store is the Palms (carry out because of Covid)

Jay S.

Yelp
Love this place! Come here with my wife and the baklava's amazing! Highly recommend this place best in Arizona by far!

Sunshine T.

Yelp
Unique and delicious!! Highly recomend all the desserts and treats. Very affordable. Very friendly and helpful.

Rayna H.

Yelp
Awesome service and great pastries. They are not overly soaked in syrup. Definitely best sweets in AZ!

Michael H.

Yelp
THE GREASE KING - this guy is. His tuff is SATURATED with fat. That's why it tastes good. Don't buy from him or you'd gain weight in just a second. Any piece you buy from him must be accompanied with 2hrs gym exercise. His knefeh tastes OK due the above. As oppose to Lebanese - you eat every day for breakfast and DON'T gain weight. His is a killer. BEWARE.
