Where To Eat & Drink In St. Louis

"This classic Richmond Heights ice cream stand is a must-visit during the summer. They have everything from slushies to frozen custard concretes and once you order, grab a spot at one of their picnic tables and debate with your group if it makes sense for you to all go in on a soft serve machine together. As a heads up, Mr. Wizard’s converts into a Christmas tree lot in the winter, so plan accordingly." - jen maylack

Google
Interesting a long time custard place in St. Louis. Popular local place. Custard had a really great texture nice and thick. But it really lacked flavor. Of course Ted Drews is the standard in St. Louis and it doesn’t quite reach that.

Google

Google
What a blast from the past! Including UNBELIEVABLE PRICES! Best I've found and the frozen custard is great! Chocolate and Vanilla and Twist, too. Generous servings. GREAT VARIETY! Something for everyone... Very nice staff too. Lots of outdoor tables covered with vinyl they switch out.

Went while on vacation. Had the turtle sundae. Silky smooth frozen custard that is amazing! Friendly staff and quick service! Plenty of options to choose from too.

Google
We stop by here every time we are in the area. Great customer service, fast and friendly. Banana pudding is my go to.

Google
WOW! That’s all I can say. I had heard about the “custard” in Saint Louis, but I was wondering how good can this frozen treat be…. Mr. Wizard’s was one of the better frozen sweets I’ve had. They have custards, sundaes, and “concrete.” That last one is the same as their custard except the toppings are mixed into the middle of the custard. I imagine that’s how everyone wants it, anyways. I got the “S’mores” concrete with a vanilla base, but my friends got some of the chocolate base custards. With a consistency somewhere between froyo and ice cream, it was thick enough where you felt the consistency, but not so thick that you had the struggle to scoop or bite it. In terms of price, a “small” portion is fine for a nice small treat, but if there are two or more, I’d suggest a medium. It’s only a dollar or so more, but I’d say 3X as much custard. Definitely a value, but a large did not seem much bigger than a medium. Overall, such a delicious frozen treat with a great price in a cool setting.

Google
This has the best frozen custard around. If we are near there we have to stop every time.

Yelp
I was excited to try a new to me local custard shop. Typically I only go to Ted Drew's l, but I like supporting others. The service was super at the window and assistance with the menu was appreciated. There are no indoor tables, but picnic tables outside. The area had trash cans and was clean. Order was up quickly and my son and I were excited! I had Mr. Wizard and my son S'mores. My initial bite seemed good, but then soured. The taste just was not as good as hoped. I tossed mine a few bites in. My son had similar thoughts unfortunately and did not finish. It's hard to give a negative review to a local business, but I'm letting the product lead on this review. A 2.5 rounding down. I will stick with Ted Drew's in Saint Louis.

Yelp
I was craving a simple chocolate frozen custard with extra rainbow sprinkles, and Mr. Wizard's did not disappoint. Both the employee who took my order and the other employee who handed me my order were EXTREMELY friendly, welcoming, and enthusiastic. They genuinely brightened my mood! While I recognize that my order was not at all complicated, I was still impressed that they handed me my cup quite literally seconds after I paid. The prices are very reasonable. There is a $0.50 charge if you pay with a card, which I didn't mind. Great menu, great service, and great atmosphere for the summer. It's safe to say that Mr. Wizard's fulfilled my craving and exceeded my expectations!

Yelp
Solid custard & frozen yogurt stand. No frills. Speedy service and a decent selections of toppings/mix ins. My husband loves custard, I'm more of an ice cream fan so I appreciate they have frozen yogurt and when it comes to the yogurt side of things it's some of the best I've had in the area. On my latest visit I got a small cookie dough concrete. Mixing wasn't that great but at least I had chunks of dough to enjoy. My husband didn't love the assembly of his toppings for his custard sundae but did notice that you can get it "layered" so will give that a go next time!

Yelp
Simply wonderful frozen custard at Mr. Wizard's! Now that I have moved out of stl, anytime I'm back in town I try to make my way there for a classic chocolate vanilla swirled cone! It is a simple pleasure that's totally worth it! The service is always friendly and their shop has major summer vibes w the their outdoor seating/benches! I love bringing friends here for dessert and I can't wait to be back in town for more!

Yelp
An STL Staple that reminds me of my childhood! Always a good reliable and CHEAP ice cream joint. It's typically fairly quick and the service is always good. Whether you've been here before or not at all, it's a refreshing sweet treat no matter what you get! I'd recommend a concrete

Leslie U.

Yelp
I dont know how other flavors taste like but they definitely have the BEST CHOCOLATE custard in town. The staffs are really quick and friendly. They have table and small parking lot that are very convenient to stay and enjoy the ice cream. The shop design is very cute btw.

Yelp
Decided to go here for the first time in many years because my partner lives nearby. Remember it not making a strong impression when I was younger, especially with other options that I always gravitated towards close by. Since the day was nice, we ended up walking to it after seeing a picture online of a menu and thought that the prices were significantly more affordable over other options in the area. Unfortunately, it was apparently a very outdated picture, because prices were as much if not higher than say Andy's or even Ted Drewes when including the .50 surcharge for using a card. The custard is below average at best, and was quite melted at the bottom even on a relatively cool day. Paid extra for a second topping and it didn't seem very balanced or worth the extra price for it. It it was half the price, it would be fine for a cheap treat in comparison to their competitors. But with a loud location and subpar ice cream, it puzzles me how it has stayed affloat after all these years.
google avatar

Jennifer N.

Yelp
I have drove by Mr. Wizard's several time when I head by home and I had to stop by to see if it was up to par with Andy and Ted Drewes. I will have to say that Mr. Wizard's concrete is unique. The ice cream tasted like a whipped ice cream so it was very light and creamy. I didn't feel full after eating the ice cream because of how light the concrete was. I'm not sure how they make their concrete but I loved it. Mr. Wizard's now accept credit cards if anyone was wondering. Definitely give this place a try.

Yelp
Call me a heretic, but I prefer this place to Ted Drewes. The product, the location and the decor. I've never had bad service here, but I don't expect to be treated like royalty wherever I go. It's a small business with one location. If they're open, regardless of whether they're 'supposed to be' or not, yay. If not, oh well. Maybe next time. If you've always got to have it your way, go to Burger King (or Ted Drewes). If you can deal with the fact that life isn't always fair, give this place a shot. If they take your order, prepare to be delighted. The menu is not as big or fancy as some of the competition, but I think I've eaten my way through it. I can't say that anything ever disappointed me. If you're looking for a treat without totally destroying your calorie budget, they do have frozen yogurt. If you're going to blow the budget, blow it with 'The Wizard'. Or a Banana Split. Beware, they're just about done for the season. Usually they close right around now and reopen in February. Maybe I got lucky with this warm weather we've been having. It's about to turn cold again, so they may call it done for the year. Don't say you weren't warned. If you don't make it in time, I'll see you there in 2024.

Yelp
Not the best custard place in town, but it's in the neighborhood and I like supporting local businesses. The custard isn't as creamy and it's way sweeter than most. But they don't skimp on the toppings and the staff is always friendly. They also have free ice cold water available. A little loud to sit outside and enjoy the custard, as Big Bend is right next to the patio. But it's a decent enough place for a convenient neighborhood custard with plenty of toppings.
google avatar

Vivienne C.

Yelp
Some people say that this place is better than Ted Drewes but I still prefer ice cream to custard, so I'm not sure what I think in regards to that issue. We caught them on one of their last weeks for the season which I felt very lucky about. I ordered The Wizard small concrete, which is where they mix all the ingredients together, and thought it was very good. I really appreciate the hot fudge being mixed in as it created a Oreo-like consistency along with the brownies which was interesting. The strawberries though has got to be my favorite part, it was a good relief from the other super sweet parts of the ice cream. I will say that it does land on the sweeter side and a small concrete is more than enough to satisfy your sweet tooth. Overall, very solid custard store. Will definitely come back to try more of their other specialty items but will currently make no comment regarding the Ted Drewes vs Mr. Wizard debate.
google avatar

Yelp
Overall this is my favorite custard in stl. The only flaw is the customer service. Sometimes they decide to close early with no indication. One time we arrived 40 minutes before close and the workers just looked at us through the service windows (and did not serve us) With that being said, their custard is hard to beat! The wizard is fantastic!
google avatar

Zach H.

Yelp
A St. Louis classic for ice cream. They have tons of combinations to satisfy your sweet cravings. I loved the banana pudding concrete although I should have gotten it layered but they didn't suggest that I read on menu after I ordered lol. Decent pricing.

Yelp
Rating: 4.7 Stars After multiple visits to Clementine's, I started really craving custard. A quick Google search yielded Mr. Wizard's Frozen Custard and Yogurt. I decided to drive to Maplewood to give it a try, and I am glad that I did. On my first visit, I ordered a Vanilla Custard Cone. The custard was magical (bad pun-intended), and it had excellent sweetness and flavor. The cone was fresh and tasty too. I was also impressed with the portion size! While perusing the menu at my first visit, I noticed that they offer Banana Pudding as an option for either a Concrete or Sundae. Naturally, I had to return the next week to try this. I really enjoyed the Banana Pudding Concrete. The banana was sweet nd ripe, and the vanilla wafers were fresh. These components complemented the custard nicely for a very tasty sweet treat. Lastly, the staff was nice both times. I am glad that I got to try Mr. Wizard's Frozen Custard and Yogurt. While I never go to Maplewood, I now have a magical (bad pun-intended, again) reason to return!

Yelp
VERY good custard! This little place was a fun stop after a hot afternoon at the zoo. My youngest was convinced they make their ice cream with magic due to the name and the man at the counter played along, which was really nice. The cookie dough blizzard is KILLLLER. Like dang good. I had order envy for the person in my group that got it and let me taste, but the strawberry milkshake I ordered was truly very tasty. We will be back for sure! Lots of outdoor seating which is nice as well. On a busy street so need to keep a close eye on little ones.
google avatar

Yelp
Mr Wizard's is excellent!! The ice cream has a great flavor and texture. The service was great as well.

Yelp
I don't come here very often, but when I do I keep it simple with a vanilla in a cone with sprinkles. It never disappoints. The sprinkles are the exact consistency that you would want them to be and who doesn't like a bit of color in their life? I have never tried anything else, but my boyfriend got a coffee shake and seemed to really enjoy it. The only issue is sometimes the parking is full and it's not the easiest to turn into the neighborhood to park because you have to go around the block.

Emily T.

Yelp
This was hands down one of the worst experiences I have ever had at a business. We pulled up to mr wizards with a huge line of people waiting out front. The two girls behind the window working started pointed their thumbs down at me in my direction and throwing dirty looks as we were walking up to stand in like. We were kinda confused and thought she was pointing to someone else. When we arrived at the window, there was still 3 customers who were still getting served in front of us. When it was our turn to order, the workers slammed the window down on our faces and shut the lights off. There was still probably 15 customers sitting outside in the pitch black trying to enjoy their ice cream. She refused to even say anything to me and turned away when I tried to ask what was going on. She yelled at me they close at 8:30. When their websites says 9pm.
google avatar

Nicole P.

Yelp
Ice cream is decent but their hours are not predictable. We went during their "open" hours and they were closed with a message on the machine from 2020.

Clara P.

Yelp
A Saint Louis staple! This place is always the best. Excellent service, frozen custard that hits the spot every time and the outdoor format is timeless. Love everything about this place, a nostalgic gem. If you haven't been, or are from out of town, I highly reccommend trying it out!
google avatar

Kris B.

Yelp
Always super fast and very delicious. I know it's blasphemy to say this, but I much prefer Mr. Wizard's to local favorite Ted Drewes. Even just the plain custard is delicious but the many flavors Mr. Wizard's offers makes every trip an opportunity to experiment. Absolutely perfect for a hot summer day in the Midwest. I'd also like to add that their portions are quite generous for the low price. They certainly didn't skimp on the cookie dough bites! I was very thankful that they enforce a mask policy for both customers and employees as well.
google avatar

Kaitlin N.

Yelp
Normally we love Mr. Wizards, but our last visit was incredibly disappointing- we showed up at 8:15 on a Wednesday night with our toddler. Online it said they were open until 10pm. There was a long line, which is no problem. Except that we were informed the people in line in front of us were the last customers for the night and they wouldn't serve us. So we had to take our screaming toddler back to the car empty handed.

Katie P.

Yelp
Was told they closed @10. After many recommendations took my dog at 9:15. Seeing the staff cleaning I could understand being told the were slow and closing early. Would have left with a smile. Instead every staff member put their heads down ignoring me and another woman. As we both walked back to our cars they all laughed and turned all the signs off. Acknowledgement is all I needed.
google avatar

Julie S.

Yelp
We love this place! This is a favorite of my daughter's and we go almost every day when they are open! Last summer we went so often that the wonderful employees had our "regular" orders ready by the time I got to the window! Can't recommend enough! A great and affordable treat any day!
google avatar

Steven B.

Yelp
Yawn! Boring. Nothing special. Chocolate Covered Cherry use to be my go to order, but tonight it fell flat. My taste buds felt no excitement while I ate my, concrete. What happened to you Mr. Wizard? I use to love you, but you were totally bland tonight. To be honest, there was absolutely no flavor to your custard tonight. I also am doubting if your staff got my order right. I think they actually served me yogurt instead of custard. Product wise, I'd give you 2 Stars, but the friendly and professional young lady working the window got you the extra star. When: July 19, 2016 Why: Ice Cream/Custard Sweet Treat

Marlana P.

Yelp
We are from out of town and saw nice reviews about how good the custard was. Drove up and in the window we can see one of the employees cleaning her tennis shoes in the food area. That was a huge red flag and we drove right off and got ice cream from QuickTrip.
google avatar

Brady B.

Yelp
We ordered 2 speciality concretes (a frozen custard with mix-ins) - one was banana pudding themed and the other was a cherry chocolate pie. Both were outstanding. Delicious custard base with a healthy serving of delicious toppings. Ordered 2 small sized specialty concretes, which was the perfect amount for us to share. Service was friendly and quick. You order and pick up at a window, only seating outside (this would also be easy to pick up and take to-go and enjoy at home).

Maddie K.

Yelp
The best frozen custard in St. Louis! Definitely a favorite, but the hours tend to change and sometimes they close earlier than normal
google avatar

Audrey B.

Yelp
Really good custard, not super unique or anything but friendly folks and good custard with a good amount of options
google avatar

Brian L.

Yelp
I love to support small local business like this. Service is always fast and the workers are always friendly. Who doesn't love good custard!? A manager spotted my son and I picking up some bottles people threw in the lot. When I went to pay for our order he told me it was on him. When I asked why he told me that he saw us cleaning up the trash from the last jack ass people in the lot. Sometimes the little things we do each day are noticed and we really appreciated his appreciation! Great little spot to frequent all summer long!
google avatar

Gary G.

Yelp
I am really glad Maplewood has Mr Wizard. The custard is really good, the workers have always been nice & thoughtful (like giving extra napkins when I take my granddaughters) and you can support the "little guy" by bringing your business to them. Hurrah for Mr Wizard's!!
google avatar

Vik S.

Yelp
Some say it's rare in life to experience true perfection, but if you have 4 bucks in your pocket, perfection can be found at this custard stand, in the form of something called an Hawaiian Concrete. It's a blend of custard (vanilla/chocolate/twist, I choose the twist) with pecans, coconut, banana, and pineapple, and it is just amazing. Every bite is just chock full of different tastes and textures. It is just so satisfying, nourishing, and absolutely perfect. They're open till 10pm everyday. Go get one.
google avatar

Michael P.

Yelp
A roadside attraction and neighborhood gathering spot that serves up frozen custard -- shakes, concretes, malts, cones and sundaes. Nice old school feel and great place to people watch under the yellow glowing lights on a hot summer night. Some improvements appear to be being made to Big Bend that, if traffic is slowed, will make hanging on the patio even better!

Jill C.

Yelp
Their hours this years are fluid at best....they closed one night at 8:30-in the summer?!!! Went to Clementine's then and was packed and delicious!!

Tritobia J.

Yelp
Great Custard and they have non dairy options as well. I love the doggy treats and a place to sit down to enjoy the ice cream so the kids don't make a mess in the car. Great customer service consistently.
google avatar

Sarah V.

Yelp
Super cute place! Great value for the amount you get. I love the layered concretes. I will be back!
google avatar

Jeff R.

Yelp
What a great find. I was on my way & just had to stop. Turtle Concrete was delightful. I will definitely return.

Jose M.

Yelp
One of the guys filling the orders was NOT wearing mask. It was enough for me to go. I cannot understand four coworkers there and no one said anything. The last time I go there.
google avatar

Cassidy B.

Yelp
We got one of the concretes there, banana peanut butter. I thought it would be mixed together (could have been my fault) but it still had really good flavor! Creamy from the custard, and the banana was perfect sweet. Wish they had better or more parking!
google avatar

Mark L.

Yelp
People said this place is better than Ted Drewes, so I had to come before I leave to see, I was disappointed. I had the vanilla and wanted to taste it for The texture and frozen custard flavor. The vanilla wasn't there but since I had the lemon at Ted so it may be biased as well. The texture and ingredient is definitely different. Not as good. Nonetheless, it's not bad. The toppings were not exciting. It could be I'm biased because I had the Ted Drewes first and they happened to have the toppings I like, but looking at the topping selection, they aren't taking care of nuts lover. Pistachios only. Not thrilling for me as a nut lover. To me it's like a very heavy creamy soft serve ice cream. Due to possible biased, I have it a 4 stars but my feelings it's more a 3 stars.
google avatar

Anthony M.

Yelp
Good Maplewood spot to get good custard in the summer months!!
google avatar

Mel A.

Yelp
For nearly a year, I've avoided sweets but knew that one day I will have a craving that will need to be satisfied. I'm glad when that time came, I've already done my research and read so much great things about Mr. Wizard's that the choice was obvious. My first of a few visits (~4 this year so far since I really don't want to overdo it), I tried their Hawaiian concrete with yogurt. I did get brave and tried their custard but quickly regretted the sinful decision. I do have to say that their custard was really creamy, thick, and delicious. But nowadays, I am happy and satisfied with my occasional visit to pick up some yogurt concrete with coconut flakes, pecans, bananas and pineapple chunks. Service has always been quick and the staff have always been friendly. I have noticed though when I've passed by several times that the place does get extremely busy and there is barely enough parking for everyone! It's that good.
google avatar

Crystal A.

Yelp
HOLE IN THE WALL. My uncle and aunt were on a mission to find a frozen custard place before they dropped me off at the airport for my flight. Mr. Wizards was a hidden gem that not even my aunt and uncle knew about until that day.... BOY WERE THEY MISSING OUT. I ordered a simple vanilla frozen custard on a cone, I felt the best way to go was where it all started! The custard was placed so perfectly I almost didn't want to eat it. As I had my first taste of heaven, my mind and tastebuds were Rollin!! What made it even better was the consistency (that I wasn't expecting).... Just perfect in the humid weather!
google avatar

Leslie H.

Yelp
I know this is probably going to sound like blasphemy coming from a Saint Louis native, but I like this place much better than Ted Drewes. Their prices are a little better, and I like the taste of the custard much more. It's soft and creamy without being watery, and the flavors are very, very good. They offer chocolate custard as a base which I LOVE because I'm a chocoholic for sure. They're also super generous with their toppings and mix-ins. There have been times I've eaten a concrete at Ted Drewes and gotten whole mouthfuls of just vanilla custard, but never here! Their German Chocolate concrete is seriously one of the best things I've ever had. It's chocolate custard, shaved coconut, caramel, and salted nuts, all mixed in together. It's GLORIOUS.

Janet K.

Yelp
Our group had 5 items and only one finished their item which was a chocolate dipped cone. The concretes were vanilla custard with a few chocolate chips barely stirred in, a melted Chocolate malt that tasted like warm chocolate milk and a turtle Sundae that was foamy and Missing the caramel. Very disappointing experience.
google avatar

Aimee D.

Yelp
I knew I was in trouble when I moved 5 minutes away from Mr. Wizard's. All of their concretes are fantastic... I have to agree with Steven B's review where he says the custard here is rich and creamy. You can throw anything in there and it's going to make your head spin it's that good. I usually go the cookie dough or Oreo route, but most recently I splurged with a friend on the strawberry shortcake and banana split. If you haven't tried those yet, definitely make that a priority. I've also seen people walk away with ice cream cones that HAVE to be 6-7 inches tall! It's fun to sit outside at the picnic tables on a balmy St. Louis summer evening. It kind of completes the experience when you do that, rather than take it home. Couldn't be a bigger fan of this place. It's a staple in my summer routine!

Linda W.

Yelp
We were looking forward to our first treats of the year at Mr. Wizard's today (March 10) when we had to go to St. Louis. Unfortunately, the two women working inside - where they prepare/breathe on the food - were maskless, despite a sign saying they wear masks and asking customers to do so, as well. One of them briefly put on a mask when someone came to the window, then took it off. We lost our desire for their potential COVID "gift" and left without buying anything. Hated to do so, but we just couldn't stomach it...

Stephen G.

Yelp
Good custard but like others have said, they regularly close early. When you get there while everyone is still inside the shop they just ignore you hoping you leave rather then tell you they closed early. Poor customer service.

Mary B.

Yelp
Nothing to say but: This IS the best frozen custard in St. Louis. The service is super fast and friendly. Conveniently located. I just finished a VERY satisfying Kiddie Cone for $150 including tax! But if you are ambitious, their concretes and sundaes are AMAZING!
