"Mr. Lam gained renowned for his culinary prowess in restaurants in New York and London, however he has run this modern, sophisticated eatery on the edge of the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon for almost two decades. In contrast with other gastronomic restaurants these days, the majority of dishes on the menu have been mainstays since it first opened, in so doing keeping with the tradition of offering the best Chinese cuisine. Featuring a hint of cutting-edge innovation as well as a focus on top-quality ingredients, the menu boasts memorable dishes such as the lightly battered and crispy Senhor Batista prawns, with a delicious sweet and sour sauce. The restaurant is laid out on three floors, with an attractive dining room and welcoming bar on the top floor that includes picture windows and a glass roof that provide lots of natural light and stunning views." - Michelin Inspector

Mr. Lam

"Top-quality Chinese cuisine with a hint of the cutting edge is on offer in this sumptuous modern mansion overlooking the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon. The menu here was put together by a chef famous for culinary creations in restaurants in both New York and London. For Brazil, Mr Lam has revived traditional recipes including Peking duck and chicken satay as well as creating new and unusual dishes such as Uhn Ehggi (a passion fruit and coconut dessert in the shape of a fried egg). An experience full of surprises." - Michelin Inspector

I want to start by highlighting the exceptional service we received at Mr. Lam’s. The staff truly went out of their way to ensure our dining experience was memorable and made our table feel particularly special. However, when it comes to the food, I have some concerns. The dishes we tried felt overwhelmingly greasy and heavy. To summarize the menu, it consisted primarily of fried rice loaded with oil, overly crispy fried chicken that left a slick residue, and spring rolls that, while crunchy, were drenched in grease. Even the items that weren’t deep-fried had an unsettling greasy texture and lacked distinct flavors, making them taste rather bland. On a more positive note, the restaurant itself boasts a lovely and open atmosphere, which adds to the overall dining experience. Nonetheless, despite the excellent service and inviting ambiance, I feel that the steep prices do not align with the quality of food served. The high cost makes the experience feel less worth it, overshadowing the positives.

Google
After Rappi application robbed me 223 BRL with an arbitrary order cancelation. And without any means to have my money nor my order back, I came down there and the administrator gave me my order from their own pocket. I definetely will go eat in the place, looks awesome. Great food by the way!

Mr Lam is named in the Michelin Guide but don't let this fool you. The outside of the restaurant with its black heavy imposing doors gave an upmarket feel. Once we had confirmed our reservation with Maître De we made our way to the table. This was situated on the 2nd Floor (of three) with views over the nicely lit lagoon. When we arrived at 7.30pm, there was only one other table of about 6 people on the 1st floor and one on the 2nd floor. The restaurant started to fill up quickly after that. We were handed the menus with the waiter speaking in Portuguese. We asked “Voce fala Ingles” to which he answered “a little”. This to me meant “depends what you are going to ask me”. For drinks we ordered Bohemian Beer and some still water. To start we ordered the Chicken Spring Rolls, Shrimp Prawn Rolls and Xiao Long Bao. The spring rolls arrived first, both were accompanied by sweet and sour sauce. We noted that there was no soy sauce provided. The chicken spring rolls were not anything like what we had anticipated. They were like eating a chicken and cheese pasty. Other than the shape and the deep fried filo pastry with sesame seed at each end, there really was nothing Oriental about them. The Shrimp Spring Rolls on the other hand were delightful. When they first arrived, they were an extremely hot temperature. Whilst they cooled down we got stuck into the chicken, which really should have been given up as a bad job. Once they had reached a temperature that wasn’t going to take off a layer of the inside of our mouths, we proceeded to devour. They were literally packed full with the juiciest prawns and gave Singapore airport lounge a run for its money and that is really saying something. Like the chicken version, they were dipped in sesame seed at each end but these did feel truly Chinese. It went down hill from there on in. The last starter we order was Xiao Long Bao. They lacked the juicy soup and a plain meaty flavour. Instead they were over seasoned with pepper and not even the black vinegar could save them Once we were finished with the starters along came the mains. I ordered the Peking chicken and my husband ordered the Filet Mignonette Beef. Both were pricey, especially the beef. Along with this we ordered egg fried rice. Whilst I had been in the lavatory, one of the waiters had returned to the table to inform my husband that this also contained shrimp. This was not a problem for us but maybe the restaurant should consider a menu update to state this. Both the chicken and steak dishes were massive but then for the price they should be. Where do I start in terms of each as both were a huge disappointment. The meat of the beef dish was melt in the mouth but was short on any distinctive flavour and was horrendously bland. We felt we had to eat as much of it as we could because of the cost. It had most of the key ingredients, onions, peppers and black beans but where was the garlic and the much needed seasoning. The Peking Chicken, which when we have tasted anywhere else but mainly in the UK normally comes with a peanut fruity sweet sauce. In this version, there were cashew nuts scattered alongside the diced chicken. The sauce again lacked substance and flavour. The chef had made an attempt at some kind of sweet sauce but again the diner was left wanting more. Not wanting to end up with a projectile vomit situation, I had to leave. Throughout the whole meal, we felt like we were under direct scrutiny from the waiting staff. As soon as we cleared a plate, it was removed. The moment we sipped some water it was refilled. Could they lip read? We thought absolutely yes. We kept our conversation to a minimum which meant that we barely enjoyed the meal (not just because of the taste) or each other’s company. Once the meal was over but not finished, we made a swift exit. I was left wondering, did we order the wrong dishes? A lot of other guests seemed to be ordering some form of noodles and enjoying it.

Google
Incredibly Overpriced - definitely avoid. This should not have any michelin recommendation at all. Do not have the chicken satay - it’s a lukewarm, slightly truffley sauce, with little depth or flavour. Overrated place and has a lot of work.

Google
The food was absolutely delicious. It was the best food I have had in Rio. The duck was immaculate and so was the sweet and sour chicken. The waiters were so nice!! If you are in Rio and are dire need of some good seasoned food come here!

Google
Don't understand the hype. Mediocre at best food. We had 2 entrees, King Thor Prawns and Crispy Beef, and not a single dish was really good, and - just like the drinks - full of sugar. If you add the completely outrageous price tag, this restaurant is just made for wealthy people to eat among other wealthy people. The best part was the service, who managed to forget only 1 of the 6 items we ordered. Totally overpriced.

Google
Food was absolutely incredible, and the service was fantastic. Highly recommend the Peking Duck, Spring Rolls, Sweet & Sour Pork! The atmosphere was fantastic as well. Definitely want to come back.

Google
Mr Lam is incredible! As a fan of chicken satay, I was excited and curious to try theirs and was not disappointed! I also order the fried rice as a side with not much expectations as it was just to complement the main dish, but even that was so yummy! I had to control myself not to eat everything as I was saving space for their dessert, and thank God I did that! I had their famous cocada that looks like a fried egg (can't remember the actual dish name now) and it was mind blowing! Their drinks are also impressive, but there was one that had a very strong spicy taste, although they promised they did not used red pepper... In any case, I had an amazing time and experience at Mr Lam and will definitely go back next time I'm visiting Rio!

Yelp
Ok, Mr Lam....you are back in good standing with me. I must have gotten them on an off night last year but tonight's dinner was the Mr Lam I had enjoyed and been accustomed to in the past. Enjoyed the Frango Nazar which had an exceptional sauce served with bell peppers, onions and black pepper. Truly a delightful dish that I enjoyed with the shrimp fried rice and a Stella Artois (odd they do not offer any Chinese beer). Nice ambiance and reasonably priced considering the high quality (not to be confused with a cheap takeout restaurant). One of the best Chinese meals I've had in Brazil or Miami.

Yelp
My friend and I went to Mr. Lam and received blatant disrespect and discrimination at the door!! The security guard immediately stopped my friend at the door and went inside to get the hostess. Once the hostess arrived, she claimed that they were closed, and did not let us enter, even though it was 11:45PM and their website stated they closed at 1AM. A few minutes later while standing in front of Mr. Lam waiting for our Uber ride, a caucasian family approached and the same security guard and hostess allowed them to enter the restaurant!! It's a shame that in 2025 Black people are still experiencing discrimination. 0 stars for the staff of Mr. Lam!

Yelp
We ordered delivery and got the garlic broccoli, meat and water chestnut, didn't even tell you what kind of meat, dumplings, shrimp dumplings, and Krispy beef. 1. broccoli 3/5 how could you go wrong 2. meat water chestnut dumplings -5/5 NEVER AGAIN. Texture is off and I don't know what meat was inside but it was just off. Automatically spit it out. 3. shrimp dumplings 1/5 4. Krispy beef 2/5 I couldn't even tell it was beef. But the sauce on it was good. Clearly Chinese food is not common is Brazil. If you have good authentic Chinese food back home it's not worth getting. You will regret getting it. If you never had Chinese food before you might enjoy it.

Yelp
This spot is the best Chinese food I've had in South America so far. I have been craving Chinese food for some days now and I happen to come across this location as a recommendation. It's quite fancy and reservations are highly suggested in the afternoon. The theme and cleanliness of this restaurant was so eye pleasing to start with. As soon as you arrive there is a red carpet and a doorman standing by. As you walk in the floors are shiny, the decor matches the theme and an ancient warrior figure is beautiful placed as you move into the dining space. The waiters were very attentive and quite taken by their service. The food, where to even begin... I had a stir rice with seafood broth and vegetables. Nothing I've ever tasted before and the flavors were properly balanced. Dessert was probably my favorite part and take this from someone that never eats desserts, IT WAS MOUTHWATERING! Be sure to try their Maracuya tequila drink, this place was definitely worth the reservation.

Yelp
Super masculine and certainly in the style of has-been obnoxious billionaire Eike Batista as this is his restaurant. Overall, was a very beautiful restaurant, loved the real-deal stone samurai soldiers. Went with about 8ish family members seated at the table with the engine from one of Eike's boats or cars. So obviously, good for groups! Was certainly pricey for Chinese but given the strength of the US dollar, not such a bad exchange for Americans. Satay de Frango...arguably the best I've had making Philippe Chow in NYC a close second! Everything else we ate was also delicious, it is the chicken satay that merits special mention. Come for the spaghetti demonstration! One of the chefs comes out and whips a heap of dough into spaghetti in about 8 minutes. Kids were absolutely mesmerized.

Yelp
So I was in Rio back in Dec, and been away my hometown New York City for almost 3 weeks, and I am just dying for some Chinese food. So I went online and found Mr. Lam, and the reviews are great, and the only complaint people are saying is the price, very expensive. To me I'm thinking why not, let see how expensive this place really is. I arrived approximately 6:30pm, and the hosts asked if I have a dinner reservation, which I don't, but the place is empty, which I was kind of thinking hm...... But later I realized the Brazilian usually don't go out for dinner till about 8pm or later, so I was way...early. lol I ordered a small tasting menu for the appetizers, which is pretty good, I get to tried out different small dishes. I got to say, I never been to a Chinese restaurant this fancy before, the dishes came out all really professional like you are dinning in at the 5* restaurant. Server are on top of everything, my glass goes half empty, he right the way fill it back up, my plate is dirty, he immediately get me a clean one. We ordered the shrimp fried rice, sweet and sour fish, and something else I forgot what it is. The both are delicious, from the time we seated till the time we leave, which is approximately 9:00pm, the place really starting to pick up, and yes, we were there for 2.5 hours. The final bill came in approximately $350 Rio, which is $140.00 USD, expensive for dinner? Not really. Expensive for Chinese dinner? Uh..yeah it is. lol Would I recommend? Hm....I'm not really sure, because I know how much Chinese food actually cost, and because they put onto a fancy plate, and in a fancy restaurant, they charging me arms and legs. If I go back, I will probably will go only if I have to take my clients out for dinner, if I by myself, I don't think I will.

Yelp
Clean, modern Decour very simplistic which I like. I didn't eat much but the food was very well done. The remarkable thing though is the incredible service from the front door and throughout dinner. Very few restaurants know how to do this in world-class fashion, Mr. Lam does

Yelp
I'm an American living in Rio, and it is very difficult to find a good restaurant with service to match it. This is one of the few. Beautiful decor, 5 star service and the best chinese food you can get in Rio. Having dined at the cheapest places in Chinatowns in the US, highend Chinese restauarants and all the way to dining authentic in China, Mr. Lam can hang with the best of them. We did a tasting (degustacao) with the crispy duck for 2 people. It was enough for 4 people, and we brought the rest home. From the appetizers to the final bite of duck, everything was perfect, the only thing we wished was that we had more of an appetite! Their drinks are expensive, but when you go here you should expect to pay a bit higher than you would out on the street. If you are looking for a nice dinner, this place will not disappoint!

Yelp
There was only two of us at dinner so we could only order so much. We ordered the crispy noodles, the crispy beef and the fried spring rolls. The crispy noodles were awful, we barely touched them. The beef was OK. Spring rolls were like any other spring rolls. Seemed like everyone was ordering the lettuce wraps- maybe that was the w

Yelp
I was very dubious about going to a Chinese restaurant in Rio, but this place did not disappoint. Excellent service + very tasty food.

Yelp
Hits the spot for an expensive craving of Chinese food. By, say, New York standards, though, it would be at the level of a good local restaurant, at a multiple the price. The setting is over the top but it worked for me, as did the service. Take out (and doggy bags) is beautifully prepared and well organized.
