Mraz & Sohn

"This establishment run by Markus Mraz and his sons Lukas and Manuel is a real institution on Vienna's gourmet scene. They serve a surprise set menu comprising a whole series of small courses. They like to concentrate on one main ingredient, which forms the basis of the menu. This approach results in dishes such as their Korean-style chanterelle goulash: a true taste explosion of roasted notes, mild spiciness and full-bodied mushroom flavour. The place has a chic, modern feel and the atmosphere is totally relaxed – they don't stand on ceremony or formality here. In one of the three rooms there is a clear view of the open kitchen. Charming service comes courtesy of attentive and very well-trained staff, not least the sommelier, who maintains a terrific wine cellar and guarantees perfectly balanced wine pairings teeming with interesting ideas." - Michelin Inspector

Where to Stay, Eat, and Drink in Vienna

"Mraz & Sohn is currently the hottest ticket in Vienna, located in the traditionally working-class 20th district. Known for its inventive and luxurious 15-course tasting menu, the restaurant challenges the traditional notions of Austrian cuisine with dishes like a miniature döner kebab made with shoulder of venison and charred-leek pappardelle in a sauce of aged Emmenthaler. The restaurant is Michelin two-starred and is run by Manuel Mraz and his brother." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Fine dining without the snobbiness of fine dining. The staff clearly enjoy their work and have fun doing it. Creative dishes with modern takes on classic flavors. Amazing atmosphere and an overall relaxed and enjoyable evening. Great concept, I wish more restaurants were as open to experiment as Mraz & Sohn.

Waow! Unique experience, so pleasant. Local and simple products, not destroyed by too much processing, but so well seasoned, cooked, presented. Some dishes are fingerfood, quite funny. Very cool place and team, but they take good care. Finally, a cheese trolley like nowhere else in Austria in 20 years. Even cheese is different there. I strongly recommend, but booking needs a long term planning !

I have been to many fine dining places, more expensive than this one. But this restaurant is just so mediocre. The price doesn’t match the ingredients at all. The chef is trying to give this Asian-inspired vibe with the menu, but as an Asian myself, this is just disappointing… I would recommend focusing getting the local cuisine right first. Service is very good though. One other thing that bothers me: the giant cheese shelf in front of the toilet, where people absolutely dry their hands while walking out. What about hygiene?!

We had the pleasure of dining at Mraz & Sohn last week, and it was an exceptional experience from start to finish. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted warmly and seated promptly. The staff was incredibly welcoming! The ambiance was perfect—we were able to sit by the open kitchen making it a great experience for a special evening out. The food was outstanding. Every dish from the menu was thoughtfully prepared and bursting with flavor. You can tell that the ingredients are fresh and that the kitchen takes pride in every plate that leaves the pass. What really set the experience apart was the service. The servers were knowledgeable, friendly, and made sure we were well taken care of the entire evening. They were also very accommodating with food preferences and restrictions, which was much appreciated. Also, the chef and servers waits by the door at the end of the dinner to say goodbye. Just impressive. It’s rare to find a restaurant that hits all the marks—great food, great service, and great atmosphere—but Mraz & Sohn exceeded my expectations. I will definitely be returning and recommending it.

Google
One of the best - if not the best - culinary experiences I had at a 2 Michelin star restaurant. Besides the fantastic, local food, the atmosphere and staff are just outstanding. You immediately feel welcomed and set for an evening you won’t forget. Another highlight is the wine tasting - a vast selection of orange wines. At Mraz & Sohn I experienced food in a way I couldn’t imagine before. We will come back soon!

It had been a long time since I was at Mraz and Son, still under the sole control of Markus. Under the lead of Lukas the whole setup changed. A friend of mine suggested the we should go there together, as he is there several times the year and always praises the food, wines and the whole team of Mraz. Last week it was the chance for us to go there and it was an outstanding experience. Already the welcome by the team when entering the restaurant was more like we went to a friends place than to a fine dining restaurant. The dinner startet with an presentation of the ingredients the menu consists tonight. I have already sent my allergies in advance to the restaurant, so they created some dishes to fulfil the requirements. THANK YOU! The journey started with several small bits, one better than the other. The main course, a BACKHENDL, was very good, but maybe not as good as the previous dishes. The cheese selection is very good and meets all different tastes. The wine list stands for the new taste and concept of Mraz and Son, and pleases all palates. It was a wonderful experience and for sure it won't take again more the ten years to go to this hidden gem in the Viennese restaurant szene.

Google
5/5 for the general vibe, presentation and service. everyone was very friendly, the wine was delicious & the food beautifully presented. the food itself was good but honestly nothing blew me away – excited to return during a different part of the year for a new menu though! still highly recommend it :)

Google
At Mraz & Sohn one gets the feeling of a true high-end dining experience. From the moment you're welcome by the Chef and his two sons, and all along the 15 dishes until you leave the establishment, you feel like you are their only client and concern of the evening. Service was excellent, just as were the food and wines. The execution was flawless, and made a lasting impression.

Yelp
A stunning experience that I still think about many weeks later! We had 13 some dishes (some very small thankfully!) and shared one wine pairing. Tasting menu starts at 167 euros per person when we were there which felt fair for the quality of food. We also added white truffle to the ginger risotto. It was outrageously good and came to about 60 euros for two (as you have to say when to stop grating and I didn't realize that!). Service was good but staff seemed a bit overwhelmed and sometimes missed a beat. Once or twice our wine pairing was served after we finished the course it was suppose to go with. Ambiance is very cool and modern and we enjoyed our 3 plus hours relaxing and eating incredible food and trying interesting wines here! Overall, worthy of a venturing here as the 2 Michelin stars are deserved for sure. Loved that they gave us a cheesy and hilarious poster to remember our meal by!

Yelp
For those that are fortunate enough to be able to afford a meal at Mraz & Sohn, I'd recommend it without any hesitation. My wife and I visited during our stay in Vienna on our honeymoon. Our dinner there was an experience I don't suppose we'll ever forget. So as not to spoil the surprise, which I have to believe is intentional given the lack of information you'll find online, I won't share what we had to eat. It enhanced our dinner to not know what we were getting into. Even once we sat down, the first impressions given by the eclectic (in a good way) menu, ambience, and the staff challenge the notion that this is fine dining. While this is a two Michelin star restaurant and the meal is of top creativity and quality, I felt far more relaxed than I expected to. While the many courses and recommended bottle of wine filled our bellies to the brim with happiness, what set the entire evening apart to the highest level was the service. The staff rotated to our table throughout the night with smiles and offered detailed descriptions of our courses as they guided us through our journey. After an unforgettable experience that lasted almost the entire night, we were greeted by the entire staff (including the chefs) at the door as they handed us bread and apples for the day ahead on the next leg of our journey to Salzburg. I'm so thankful for the staff and blessed to have been so invited as guests!

Yelp
From the moment one clicks on Mraz + Sohn's URL it is obvious these folks do things different, the MySpace-era template or Pickle cursor used to navigate and make reservations for a Michelin 2* meal that might offer Caviar, Skippy Peanut Butter or both on the same night. Featuring an open kitchen in front of the of the modern dining room, faux Chanel and out-of-focus art surrounded by brilliant white while Neil Young is playing just loud enough on the turntable, diners are first greeted with a menu offering whimsy but little useful information followed by a shopping cart of Ingredients quite different from the likes of Frantzen. Owned by a Father and Son team who claims to "take the humble Carrot as seriously as White Truffle" Wine is the next order of business, Sparkling Rose suggested as a good way to begin alongside Monkfish as Soup or Pancake plus crispy Kale topped with the aforementioned store-bought Condiment. Every bit a family affair, Markus Mraz and son Manuel happily challenging conventional thinking while staff works with the sort of effortless professionalism that brings a smile to each guest's face, course two suggests the open-faced Sandwiches at Buffet Trzesniewski while a leaf of Kale to follow finds itself wrapped around Pork and Apple with a hint of Banana. Located out in the 20th district, far from bustling old Vienna, course four further utilized Monkfish seared amidst assertive flavors before proceeding to hand-extruded Pasta dyed by Beets lent brightness by a mélange of roasted Roots, Peppers and Raspberries. Dividing the main course into two parts, first fried Pork and then the Shoulder shredded amidst Razor Clams plus a lot of fresh Horseradish, Mraz + Sohn's Cheese Cart is sure to please those seeking more esoteric labels with each well-matured and served alongside Bread plus seasonal accoutrements. Shifting sweet after a lengthy pause, the frozen Poppyseed Cake with a Raspberry center arguably Markus' most "Austrian" dish since Ham on Rye, it was with a tableside pour that Apple Tart carefully balanced Pine and sours before ending the night with a delicate bite of Mochi made from Plum and Potatoes.

Yelp
Absolutely loved visiting Mraz und Sohn during my trip to Austria. This place is a 2 Michelin star recipient, and it's so clear to see why. The menu is fresh, flavorful, and innovative, accompanied by extremely reasonable prices and unique plating of all the dishes. There are three different tasting options: 4, 6, or 9 courses. We opted for the 6-course menu, although it came with many different amuse-bouche, so we still left feeling full and satisfied. Surprisingly, we were allowed to sit at the Chef's Table, so we got a bird's eye view of the hectic, bustling nature of the kitchen, which was a really cool experience. Would love to visit this restaurant again on my next visit to Vienna!

Yelp
We had a fun and exciting meal at Mraz & Sohn. The meal started out very unconventionally with a fortune cookie, unfortunately the message was just the price of the meal The menu itself was presented as a large platter of ingredients to show us what we would be eating for the night, which was really cool. The dishes made with the meal were equally fun - much of it Asian inspired While I loved the experience, I think some of it could be refined for a real 5-star experience. It was great that they experimented with flavors, but not everything worked. Also some things were just not quite right, duck fat was not rendered and the meat was actually quite chewy. Lastly, the service was clumsy. One server asked my husband if he was done with his dish, while he was chewing and holding a fork. They also dropped a wine glass, shattering on the floor not once but twice (thankfully not out table).

Yelp
Do yourself a favor and splurge on this place. Tucked into a non touristy part of Vienna, you have to ring a bell to get in. We were greeted warmly and the rest of the night, the wait staff and host (Markus Mraz's son) were extremely attentive. The ambience is fun and eclectic, rather than strictly fancy high end, and the sommelier is excellent. The courses are innovative, delicious and beautiful, interspersed with small gifts from the kitchen such as an amuse bouche in a bush :). There is no a la carte menu, but rather, you choose from 4, 6 or 9 courses. If you can, choose one with a cheese plate because the cheeses (carefully selected just for you) and its accompaniments (particularly the truffle honey butter) are out of this world. Overall, this was a truly unforgettable experience, and well worth the price tag!

Yelp
Wow -- definitely a top class meal. I visited in December when it was very cold in Vienna, and it was well worth the trip to the outer edges of the city to visit Mraz & Sohn. As soon as I entered they knew who I was (somewhat scary) and sat me down at my table. The confirmed my listed allergies and dietary preferences and told me about their non-alcoholic kombucha option. The entire meal was amazing so I'll hit on some of the best parts. The kombucha was delicious (I ended up having two glasses) and was extremely refined. I'm generally not a fan of kombucha but this was not sour as I've generally found other ones to be. I had a fig one and it reminded me a lot to N/naka's wine grape juice available in Los Angeles. In terms of the food the standout courses were the crispy Brussels sprouts, pizza margarita xo, chimichurri venison chop, purple carrot kimchi, and the carrot ice cream with yoghurt. I was also impressed with the cheese cart but cheese isn't totally my thing. Only one of the courses did I not finish which is very impressive. My recommendations are that if you have a chance to visit Mraz & Sohn that you definitely go. The food is amazing and the staff are absolutely top notch. You'll do yourself and your tastebuds a favor!

Yelp
I'm not really sure what there is to say about this place other than the entire experience is spectacular. It's small, intimate, innovative and provides you with as much a show as it is a meal. The staff - from the partners to the junior guys cutting the bread - are knowledgable and attentive. It is well worthy of its Michelin two stars. Our overall time there was just over 4 hours and it completely flew by. It was a pleasure to talk to Simon, who took care of us most of the evening. He is exceptionally well-versed in their interesting selection of wines and we had a great chat about the restaurant scene in New York City, as well. On the day prior we had a a fabulous meal at the famous Steirereck in the Park. It was fantastic, but a very different atmosphere compared to Mraz and Sohn. And while I do give the folks at Steirereck 5 stars for a fabulous meal, I think we had more fun at Mraz & Sohn. My only tip: Go for as many courses that are available and do the full wine pairing. Worth every penny!

Yelp
Amazing service and food, start to finish! One of the best 2 Michelin Star restaurants we've dined at Vienna. I love the idea that it's not just art form and making great tasty food but they play with all your 4 senses. Before I only love Amador's but now I have two places I would always visit and would look forward to dine when I visit Vienna.

Yelp
Dinner at Mraz & Sohn is a phenomenal experience. It is hands down one of the top Michelin restaurants I've been to and not just compared to ones in Vienna. Before the actual meal, you receive an array of complementary small treats from the kitchen, and simply tasting these gives you a hint of the tasty food to come. Each course comes as a surprise and is plated beautifully and tastes just as good as it looks. The texture and flavor combinations are absolutely ingenious. Although the dishes are innovative, the creativity does not undermine the genuine deliciousness of the food. You get to choose the number of courses you would like; I highly recommend including a cheese course. For the cheese course, they roll over a cart with an impressivearray of cheeses and breads from which you can choose, accompanied by different sauces and garnishes. (Their truffle-honey is heavenly). The restaurant itself is sort of located in the middle of nowhere so you automatically feel more relaxed in comparison to eating in a restaurant in the city. It is quite small and intimate and although it is formal, the ambience is still laid-back and not at all stiffening. It's perfect for a special dinner celebration.

Yelp
Absolutely superb! The food was to die for and the warm and friendly staff made the experience even better. We got to eat at the table overlooking the kitchen which was really special. Highly recommend! Thank you everyone there!!

Yelp
Amazing food that lives up to the 2 stars but some room for improvement. Food was outstanding. Great use of local fresh ingredients to get the most out of the flavors. On the negative side, dishes were safe and the presentation was kind of out right boring. Loved the lettuce strawberry salad, tomato jello, and seabass ceviche (best overall dis). No misses. Service started out great but then slowed to a crawl. Over 3 hours for the meal. Especially when I spent 30 minutes between last dish and getting my check despite asking several times. Great wine pairings. Really fun place. Best first 5 courses I've had in a long time. Savories were solid not great. Desserts were safe. I'd come again but want this meal in 2 hours not 3.

Yelp
This meal was one of the highlights of our trip to Vienna. It was polished, fun, and, unlike some molecular gastronomy restaurants that prioritize novelty over taste, genuinely delicious. I'm a vegetarian and they didn't bat an eyelash when I asked if they could accommodate me. Lots of little treats from the kitchen along the way. I had a tomato salad for my starter, with tomato ice cream (YUM) and a mushroom and corn dish for my main, which I have a hard time describing because it was so complex, but it was truly delicious. The cheese plate is a must. They bring out a trolley of breads first, then a 3 tiered cheese cart, and a selection of 6 little accompaniments - olives, apricot jam, TRUFFLE HONEY (the stuff of dreams), pesto, and a couple of others. wow. Presentation is a strong suit. Everything was quirky, beautiful and unconventional - from the menu to the plates (which were different for every dish) and the food itself. A special meal and incredible way to begin our trip!

Yelp
Highly recommend. Warm welcome, attentive service. Creative dishes - from the chef welcome items to the dessert. Great wine paring is worth the extra money. Causal atmosphere. We will make it a staple of our Vienna visits. Don't miss it. They do take credit cards.

Yelp
Let me start with saying if this would be an "average" restaurant, i would definitely have given 5 stars. But great expectations (which i had based on their reputation and rating, and which explains the pricing) are difficult to meet. Basically, its a 14 course meal, that changes (presumably) every day. they did present the raw ingredients and explained their sources which i liked and then also asked for something we wouldn't like of those ingredients. Here a recommendation to the restaurant: hazelnuts, which were one main ingredient in one of the later dishes, were not mentioned, the same was true for any other allergenic ingredients. while no problem for us, this might cause difficulties. The dinner started great with a butternut squash cocktail (yes, that is a thing) and the starters were all great. (eg the fish with a coffee flavored batter). Some dishes were a bit salty in my view, but that probably comes down to personal preference. Unfortunately, the main dish was underwhelming. It most likely depends on the day you go there, but our main ingredient was "chicken". I like chicken, but there simply isn't enough distinctive flavor and taste in a chicken that can easily be transformed into a 100+€ meal. A chicken broth with mushrooms (too salty for me), a chicken meat "cake" with a hazelnut crust (hazelnut completely dominated) to name some examples. Overall, i would have preferred either a different meat, which would in my view have made it easier to create a real food experience, or a meat alternative (fish, seafood etc) as the main dish. The cheese selection was good, but would argue that especially regarding hard cheeses, there are even better alternatives. The wine selection was great, and reasonably priced. The dinner lasted for 3:30h. while we were in no rush, i would have preferred a slightly quicker sequence. Some dishes were brought out in rapid succession, between others there were long waiting periods. To summarize: Plus: wine selection Inspired novelty in recipes Locally sourced ingredients Minus: It seems, the experience will depend a lot on the day, in our case this resulted in the lack of a "special" main dish For a highly rated restaurant, in my view the experience shouldn't depend on the day you visit, consistent excellence is what matters.

Yelp
I have literally been having dreams of my meal at Mraz & Sohn! My husband and I had the most outstanding meal here on our honeymoon. We have been reminiscing about it ever since, and my husband said he wished it existed in Los Angeles so he could eat here every month (I had to remind him of the pricetag and then he laughed and agreed, okay, not every month, but still we can dream). We would describe this restaurant as "humble posh." Everything is extremely well thought-out, from the sliding doors into the kitchen, to the drawers at each table, to the presentation of the exact silverware that would be needed for each course. The service was warm and friendly. We loved seeing the food presented to us that would be cooked for our meal, and we loved hearing the explanation about the efforts to use seasonal ingredients and every part of an animal. The food was delicious and inventive. We even had a good, long laugh the next day when we found our Mrazies. Later on our honeymoon we dined with another two-star Michelin restaurant in Budapest and it suffered a great deal from our comparisons to Mraz & Sohn because the bar was set so high. Our life goals now include going back to Vienna so we can eat here again.

Yelp
District 20 - really not an area wher the tourists are piling up and the high-society of vienna does the daily shopping. but surprisingly: here you can find one of the best modern austrian restaurants. The Mraz offers fine food in a nice atmosphere and perfect service. try one of the menus - trust them with the wine-selection and yu will have a perfect evening. certainly not a restaurant for the average day, but if there is something to celebrate...do it in the Mraz. and watch out for the cheese selection!!!
