Thai Chicken Chain Rooster & Rice Opening Castro Location - Eater SF

"Rooster & Rice is a khao mun gai mini-chain co-founded by Bryan Lew and Tommy Charoen in 2015. It serves Thai chicken dishes in a casual, counter-service and to-go environment. The 'original' version includes poached chicken breast and thigh over jasmine rice with a side of chicken broth. Rooster & Rice merged with Chick’n Rice and has locations in San Francisco, Pleasanton, and San Jose. The new Castro location will open on March 19." - Caleb Pershan

This place is the hidden gem!! One of the best places with the highest quality-price ratio. The food is authentic (as a Thai person, I can justify for Chicken rice and the bbq & crispy pork belly rice) and has big portions! Beef Pho is also flavorful. My friend is not so impressed with chicken breast karaage, but I think it executes quite well - healthy meat but deep fried. In any event, we had a great time with leftovers. And we didn't even order the most popular dishes here yet. So we will definitely come back for more. PS: The owner and the staff are Thai. So that gives quite reassurance :)

My husband and I got street noodle, kao soi, and roti. They were all tasty and well presented. The food is also good quality and the price of the food is good too! We’ll be back to try out other dishes.

Google
Great food and amazing staff, had an excellent dinner here. Got the number 10 Kao Soi and Cream Cheese rangoons. The kao soi was super flavorful and with a bit of sriracha sauce it was perfect to my taste. The cream cheese Rangoons were tasty and the sweet and sour sauce was very good.

Google
Hands down one of the best Curry Noodle Soups I've had in the U.S. The meat was very tender, the wonton ball added a nice texture (once dunked in the soup) and acted as a nice vehicle to soak up the flavor of the broth. The noodles (not sure if they were egg or wheat) had a nice chewy texture. Also, the pickled veggies added a nice sour kick to compliment the coconut forward Curry Broth that's found in a lot of good soups in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. For me, once I added some of the Sambal and Vinegared Jalapenos, it deepened the flavor and was good to the last drop.

Google
Ordered the Kao Soi and it was great! Noodles had nice chewy texture and curry was rich but balanced. Beef was well seasoned. Ordered the cream cheese Rangoons and they were good too. Staff were friendly and accommodating. Interior could use a bit more decor. Highly recommend if you're in the Castro looking for some Asian noodle cuisine

Google
No frills order-at-the-counter noodle joint that has no reason being as good as it is. Got the #1 Street Noodle and the Wonton Noodle soup and both came out quickly and were filling and delicious. The place was pretty dead, but I hope it gets good business. It was the perfect post drinking dish.

Google
Very nice place, good food, fresh and friendly staff. I recommend the Kao Soi, #1 soup in Thailand. My Thai husband (remember, he is a Thai Chef) and me we really recommend this place!

Google
Cute and clean restaurant in Castro area . The crispy pork belly with rice is so good and love that it comes with small broth!!! I added egg and bbq pork too. The service is so friendly and fast . Can't wait to go back and try more dishes :)

Yelp
Quick speedy service! HACK: If you check in on yelp, you get a free drink! The menu was super intriguing. My noodles were flavorful but toppings were underwhelming. The egg yoke was hard, BBQ pork and wonton was bland, crispy pork could've been more crispy. I would love to come back to try other items on the menu but was not the best first impression.

Yelp
A fast casual joint where you place your order at the counter then get your food on a tray a few minutes later. Seems to have a pan Asian menu of Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese and Singaporean. While I wouldn't say this place is destination worthy, it's fine for something quick. If this were a proper table service joint, I'd probably give it 3-stars, but inflating the score a little since it's better than typical counter service restaurants. Cream Cheese Rangoon: Like the standard Chinese appetizer, but noticeably missing crab. Crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside, so they got that right. But it just tasted a little flat without the crab flavors. And felt a little pricey, given it was just cheese inside. Roti with Curry Sauce: The roti was really nice when you tear it apart and can see the wispy layers. They're great to absorb the flavor curry sauce. And that curry sauce tastes like the broth of kao soi. Though felt a bit pricey for an appetizer; at least they could have thrown in a few pieces of curry chicken too? Kao Soi: The perfect soup for a chilly day. Rich and flavorful coconut broth with tons of flavor. Love the dueling texture of springy egg noodles in the soup and the bowl of fried noodles on top of the soup. I especially liked picking from the bottom of the ball to get noodles that were partially crispy and partially tender. The beef cubes were great, though the portion felt a little stingy. Even with limited meat, you won't go hungry with all the carbs and rich broth. Street Noodles: A very nice mishmash of things to same for lunch. Crispy pork belly, sweet marinated pork slices, plump meaty wontons, fresh bok choy and even one little piece of fish cake. The noodles were chewy and fresh, though a little bland. Dipping in the broth was nice, but also mild. I guess that's why they put a bunch of hot sauce options on your table, since it's otherwise a bit basic.

Yelp
wow this place beat the "Castro has no good food options" allegation!! This is a cute restaurant, and I loved all the wall art in the dining area. The staff were super friendly, and I loved that its counter service vs waited table service. I ordered the spicy basil chicken and it was great! They had a bunch of sauce/spices you could add, and those were great as well. Overall a solid choice for a quick bite!

Yelp
Service was good, ambiance low key, but ... the food. I had an egg noodle stir fry which I selected because it had the most veggies in it. The noodles were over cooked and had probably sat on a warming are before being prepared for my dish. I can litterally count 7 or 8 small pieces of broccoli that was over cooked, and about the same number of thinly sliced carrots the must have come from a pre-cut bag. No flavor. The pasta was funny and lacked anything exciting. Added hoisin and sriracha to bring some flavor to the dish. After I ordered, I noted everyone else in the restaurant was having soup like dishes. I'd recommend trying that.

Yelp
So I have to admit I was confused by this place, and it's only been open for a month so. I don't think I was hallucinating when I saw chicken rice not only in their menu but in their original name. I had thought they were keeping Rooster & Rice's khao mun gai as a carryover menu item, but I didn't see it right away. I asked the server if they had it but got smallmouth. Flustered, I ordered the $14.95 Mr. Hen (Grilled). It was gratefully a thigh but sadly overcooked. The signature garlic rice wasn't that unique, and the sweet & sour sauce was just plain unnecessary. The cucumber slices were the only item I didn't have a quibble about (photo: https://bit.ly/3ItrZ6B). I later looked at the menu again and saw that the dollar-cheaper Mr. Hen Classic (Stewed) might've been the one I should've ordered. With misplaced confidence, I returned a couple of weeks later. I was ready to utter the words "Classic...Stewed". When I saw the menu, the choice was gone, and the entire menu looked revamped with chicken rice minimized and noodle dishes front and center. Flabbergasted, I asked where the Stewed option was, and the server simply smiled while shaking her head. I was ready to leave but decided I'd try the $14.95 Dry Noodles Grilled. It was better than my first meal but only marginally so. It consisted of a large grilled chicken thigh on top of a bowl of egg noodles mixed in their house sauce. There were bean sprouts, baby bok choy, and green onion to add texture and a healthy component. The broth in the side was oddly cold (photo: https://bit.ly/3Y27Vhe). I have to say a third visit might be a while at least until they've settled on their final menu. Hopefully they'll get the time to improve. Besides, Gai Chicken Rice isn't that far away. FOOD - 3 stars...the grilled chicken was plentiful but overcooked - and what happened to the poached poultry? AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...maintained the same space as Rooster & Rice with a few artistic touches like Mr. Hen on the wall SERVICE - 3.5 stars...smallmouth TOTAL - 3 stars...is Mr. Hen binary challenged? Yelp
The noodle soups here are amazing, and the price isn't bad for whats included. I'm here visiting but I'd definitely be a regular if I lived here!

Yelp
3.5 STARS It's rainy, cold, and you want to keep the butt dent in your couch warm... DoorDash to the rescue! Soft opening this week in the former Rooster & Rice Space is Mr.Hen (no space) in The Castro. They're open for takeout, delivery (DoorDash), and indoor dining. No outdoor seating. DD Promo: Free chicken karaage w/ $30 purchase OR 20% off for orders $15 or more. Can't combine promos. M E N U Chicken Rice, Noodle, and Noodle Soup Dishes with Thai influences (Tom Yum and Khao Soi available). Chicken is available poached, grilled (teriyaki), or fried. No liquor license. I ordered on DD and my order was delivered in less than 40 minutes. F O O D * Chicken Karaage ($9.95): https://tinyurl.com/nhbwy498 *** FREE w/ $30 purchase on DD Fav item! Despite delivery, the chicken karaage arrived warm and crunchy...zero sogginess. Moist boneless thigh meat with a flaky crumb batter that's served with a deliciously creamy and spicy aioli. GET THIS! * #6 Dry Noodle w/ shredded chicken, thick egg noodle, bean sprouts, cilantro, house special sauce, side chicken broth ($13.95): https://tinyurl.com/bde6sh3t *** Add hot sauce ($1) Usually, dry noodles are my jam but unfortunately, this wasn't. The egg noodles were overcooked and clumped together. When I tried to do a noodle pull, the noodles broke apart. Wasn't a fan of the house special sauce either; it's like hoisin so this tasted more like a dry phở gà with egg noodles. It did taste better after adding a liberal amount of lime juice (from home) and the chili sauce. * #11 Mr.Hen Classic w/ chicken breast, thigh, ginger chicken rice, cucumber, cilantro, mr.hen sauce, side broth ($13.95): https://tinyurl.com/3vaxkmaj *** Add extra chicken thigh ($3.50) *** Add ginger scallion sauce ($1) With the extra protein, the khao man gai is easily enough for two meals. --Chicken breast: On the tough and chewy side. No problem, it just goes to TT! --Chicken thigh: Tender but not moist. --Ginger chicken rice: The rice was overcooked and too soft for my preference. --Side chicken broth: Soothing and comforting with white pepper essence. A tad on the saltier side. --Mr.Hen sauce: Salty, tangy, and umami; I believe it's a fermented soy bean and soy sauce based? --Ginger scallion sauce: Fragrant and delicious...in general, I could eat this with rice all day, everyday. A M B I A N C E I've eaten here when it was Rooster & Rice and I'm assuming they've kept the minimalist and casual space with 8-9 tables. P A R K I N G Difficult street parking like most parts of the city so more of a neighborhood joint. Overall, bomb chicken karaage! I think the dry noodles and KMG needs improvement but it's only week one so they have lots of potential. 3.5 stars rounded up for a new local small business.

Yelp
A hidden gem within the Castro! If you're looking for various, yummy noodle and rice dishes (that span different cuisines) this is the place to go! It's a bit unassuming and hidden within the Castro, but you'll be pleased with the quality dishes, friendly service and laid back environment. If you're someone that is more on the introverted side, this is likely the place for you since you order at the counter and the worker end up bringing the food to your tables. My faves are the duck noodle, kao soi and hainanese chicken!

Yelp
Came here on weekday night for dinner after I found them on Yelp! They recommended the Street Noodles as their most popular dish, but I was pretty disappointed for the price (~$19). The noodles had a nice assortment of toppings but they were pretty bland and needed a lot of chili oil. The chicken on the rice plate was crispy, but the portion size of the chicken was a little on the smaller side. The inside is clean and spacious and you order at the counter when you walk in.

Yelp
The food here is delicious with nostalgic flavors that remind me of being in Asia. When I opened up my delivery container I instantly knew it would be a hit. The street noodles are super flavorful with a variety of toppings. Every appetizer we got was amazing. The curry + roti combo was a hit, and the calamari actually reminded me of onion rings since there was so much squid in them! I love how they have a bunch of classic thai/vietnamese/cantonese dishes to satisfy everyone's tastes. Would love to return in the future and try more dishes!

Yelp
This is a bit of a hidden gem in the Castro. I'm sad they don't see more foot traffic, the location is a bit out of the way. But their food has been really good! The street noodles with dumplings were absolutely delicious. And I've also tried their Chicken and Rice, which was pretty solid. The place is pretty quiet due to the lack of customers, but that makes it great if your looking for a nice quiet lunch in the Castro.

Yelp
Yesterday my two friends and I went to Mr Hens to check it out after they came from Dolores Park. We got there and looked over the menu. One person decided to have the street noodles I decided to have the fried chicken nuggets and garlic noodles. Food came out slowly, but at a reasonable time first bowl came out and one of our friends started eating in mine came out the chicken and the garlic noodles. Then my other friends came out the street noodles, which was weird. They all came out at different times. Everyone really enjoyed the noodles, but for some reason I had them taste my garlic noodles which I was really expecting. They have some garlic in them, but for some reason mine was left without any garlic at all, and I had both of them taste. My one friend decided I should take them back I didn't I guess is there with more hoisin sauce and Sriracha.&29 with tip. But really was disappointing was after paying I decided to read my experience and after doing they asked me when I was in and made my purchase. I explain to them today and they immediately came back with their explanation.. "Basically asian garlic noodles made with garlic oil , butter, Basically asian garlic noodles made with garlic oil , butter, on top with fried garlic. It a little bit different garlic noodles from American restaurants that they have some pamesan cheese & garlic powder. We apologize if our dish make you disappointed. on top with fried garlic. It a little bit different garlic noodles from American restaurants that they have some pamesan cheese & garlic powder. We apologize if our dish make you disappointed." Not to worry I won't be back to tell me how noodles are made with garlic is one thing, but to not have any garlic in them is another. There's so many other restaurants in San Francisco specially, in the Castro where I can enjoy garlic noodles that I will happily pay for but I can guarantee you, it won't be $29. The ambiance is quiet while pop music is softly playing in the back. It just seemed empty but all the tables were full except one. It has potential the workers need a little more personality the service seemed droned.

Yelp
A newly opened restaurant right in the heart of the Castro. Mr. Hen is run by Thais however they don't only focus on Thai food although that's the majority of their dishes. They do have pho. It looks like they are specialized in noodle dishes and chicken and crispy pork. It was really good.
google avatar

Yelp
Man, this weather sure has dialed in my go-to as soupy noodles and this place did not disappoint. Glad to see it took over the Rooster and Rice place. No offense, but khao mun gai isn't exactly my fav dish plus we already have a place that specializes in that dish in the neighborhood right across the street from me (Gai). I wasn't sure what to expect as the menu has a bit of a pan-asian vibe going on and that can go really wrong really fast, but I rolled the dice and ordered the khao soi. This one came with tender strips of NY steak on top. Usually I've had this dish with chicken but I actually think I like it better with beef! The broth was tasty and comforting, there was just the right amount of greens, and the noodles were tender and delicious. I can't wait to go back and try some more things there. If they are as good as this, then I will definitely be a regular.
google avatar

Yelp
Mr. Hen is a new Asian fusion fast casual restaurant in the Castro. Order and pay at the counter, then sit down and admire the giant rainbow chicken mural as you wait for your food. Their signature noodle soup is very sweet, pretty unique. The included giant chicken leg makes it a good value, meat is tender and falls off the bone. My partner got the dry noodle which was a lot of food as well.

Justinfromthe B.

Yelp
Great chicken & Rice love how healthy and clean the restaurant is also very nice host! Very professional and friendly Thank you
google avatar

Mike C.

Yelp
Very unassuming little restaurant serving up some great food. I ordered the street noodles which is a dry noodle dish w/ cha siu, roast pork belly, wontons, and bok choy w/ egg noodles that is similar to noodles from ramen shops. All the toppings were cooked perfectly and the noodles had good texture. I would come back to try the other menu items.

Sing M.

Yelp
Super tasty Pad See Ew even though the chicken is a little tough and dry because they use white meat. But I'm definitely coming back to order it again and I'll just get it with tofu next time. They have Kau Soi which is hard to find. We also had Roti and Shaking Beef and everything is very tasty.
google avatar

Zina T.

Yelp
This place is located in the brightest of corners., the karaage chicken was delicious & season generously, I could easily eat the entire plate! however it is shared size, but so is a pint of ice cream . The PAD SEE EW CHICKEN was bursting with flavors the noodles were a little on the softer side than I prefer. Over all makes for a nice lunch spot for take out or dinning in price conscious and delicious‍ photo below spelling was wrong but you get it
google avatar

Chesca F.

Yelp
Noodles soups were good and service was friendly. Interior was really clean. It's casual. Order at the counter and they bring you your food. Plus was the rave music playing in the background lol. I will say the prices are somewhat high for food that's supposed to be "street" food but I don't blame them. San Francisco is expensive.
google avatar

J S.

Yelp
Most tasteless pho ga I've ever had. Not boiled long enough Not chickeny Not fish saucy. F minus
google avatar

Terence L.

Yelp
A solid relatively new spot in the Castro. Came here the other day to check out the street noodles and Kao soi. I really, the ambiance is fast casual and the service was good. It was fairly empty when we went. The food was pretty solid but I think there was a lot of salt or MSG used since I left very thirsty. Overall, not a bad option for some Asian inspired food in the Castro!
google avatar

Erica W.

Yelp
Khao soi was exceptional. Has prime grade steak in it, which you don't see much for cost reasons. def get it with the beef! Big portion, love that they serve it with a ton of broth.
google avatar

Michael N.

Yelp
I came in on a Wednesday afternoon for lunch and was pleasantly surprised by the food options! Whenever there's Asian food, I am always down. The noodles and portion sizes did not disappoint! Service was fast (fast casual but table service was nice!) and the ambiance felt kinda like fast food but a lil more upscale? Anyways, I'm giving 4 stars cause the prices were a little high, but I guess that's inflation and all. I had the dry noodles with BBQ Pork and pork belly and wontons and it was really really flavorful! I also got the chicken karrage appetizer and it was a huge portion with enough for a nice snack. Authentic flavors, just a lil pricey.
google avatar

Orawan S.

Yelp
Great spot!! if you a fan of grilled chicken and crispy pork belly. Both are perfection. The egg noodles come with a small soup on the side. Sauce on the crispy pork belly not as bold as I expected but still tasty. We try a few things and they were amazing. Good service and ambiance. Highly recommended!!
google avatar

Justin L.

Yelp
So glad to see another eating option here in the Castro we ordered the Grill Chicken over rice and the Street Noodles soup. The latter came with a good amount of yellow eggs noodles, sprouts, pieces of crispy pork with crunchy skin (love), bbq pork and wonton. I hope to try other dishes next time. The service was pleasant and helpful. Order and pay at the counter and food brought out individual serving plate. Great job Mr Hen and please stick around. :)

Yelp
For a brand new spot a four star review is not a bad thing. This place may be a 5 soon but they r worth a trip for sure. They are just starting so give them a shot. My noodles with broth and chicken were packed with flavor and texture. Loved the crunch on the moist and tender chicken. Dining room is clean and cute. Counter folks were nice. Prices are the standard for this type of place. I did in person dining and the customers around me seemed happy as well. No pictures because fried chicken makes me into a greedy impatient monster.
google avatar

Jeepsy S.

Yelp
Excellent food and great service. I like the wonton and crispy pork belly so much. I will come back for sure when I come to SF.

Sean T.

Yelp
The food here was delicious! The woman at the counter was warm and inviting, and even gave me a recommendation on what to order. (The bahmi kiao soup!) The soup had such a good sized portion of meat and noodles, and the dumplings were great too. My wife got the pad see ew - which she also loved! I tried it as well and it had a dash of sweetness which I really enjoyed. The prices were more than fair, the food was great, the Thai iced tea hit on a warm afternoon and the seating was clean and convenient. I would definitely recommend coming here!

Ronan R.

Yelp
Really poor food for price and below average. Service was ok but overall won't return
google avatar

Thomas G.

Yelp
I love the food here! I've tried everything on the menu! The #6, Bahmi Kiao is so good. The pork belly makes every dish good and the wontons are absolute heaven. The chow mein is perfect and the chicken in the PadSeeEw is to die for.

Yelp
Service was - Not Nasty - But lacked luster. Ambiance- quiet. Food- meh... Parking surprisingly was easy!

Yelp
Calling all noodle lovers! You won't want to miss out on the incredible flavors at Mr. Hen Noodle House. This charming casual restaurant near Castro Street offers delicious noodles and chicken katsu rice plates that are simply unforgettable. And the best part? You won't break the bank with their affordable prices.
google avatar

Victoria F.

Yelp
I ordered the hainanese chicken rice and in the past I got the wonton soup. It tasted so delicious and flavorful. Reminded me of the authentic food you get in Singapore. Not sure where else you can find these dishes. The place is clean and inviting. The waiters were very attentive.
google avatar

Jermaine J.

Yelp
Wow. This places is sooooooooooooooo good. A little pricy though but the food is amazing
google avatar

Noppadon Y.

Yelp
This is the best place I had before. I order couple things and both of them were delicious. The noodles with crispy pork belly was so good and sauce came with my order was so good as weI can't wait to go back again. If I can give them 10 stars I will.

Sam K.

Yelp
This is an ideal hangover food. The nice warm both is simple yet tasty. It's not too greasy and there is a good noodle to protein ratio :). The hours are weird cuz they open at 1pm on the weekends? But, definitely worth coming back and giving the other noodles a try
google avatar

Yelp
We had HIGH hopes for this spot as the reviews got us curious. Sadly the food fell short of our expectations. The Street Noodles ad was nowhere close to what we got - a measly four small pieces of pork belly where the ad shows MUCH more and larger in size. The side broth was flavorful but the Street Noodles were not just dry but DRY. The Kao Soy's broth was flavorful but the noodles were clumpy and undercooked and after the second bite, we knew we chose wrong. You can't go wrong with Pork Belly can you? Yes you can when the pork belly is dry and appeared to be precooked and not juicy whatsoever. The Curry and Roti was also disappointing as the curry was super runny and the roti could not hold on to any of the sauce. What was the point? The best way for us to eat both was to ladle the curry into our mouths while taking a bite of the roti. That was too much work. We give two stars for the service, cleanliness of space and some of the flavor.
google avatar

Chad H.

Yelp
Just had lunch here. The weight staff is extremely nice. The space is spacious and clean. I ordered the pho with chicken. Simple, clean, and yummy. A definite yes.

Emily S.

Yelp
SO GOOOD! family run business that you must support when visiting SF. came here on a saturday night and got the wonton soup and Mr Hen noodles soup (#5 and #1 on the menu). the wonton soup was perfectly light and tasty and definitely our favorite of the two. fire aux too :)
google avatar

Inigo M.

Yelp
Their supposed specialty chicken (grilled/barbecue) is riddled with burnt pieces (metallic shards from the grill and/or charred meat) and tiny bone fragments (amateur/inattentive meat preparation) that will either cut your mouth/palate or damage your teeth when you unexpectedly bite into them. What a shame--their chicken used to be good. Whoever's in the kitchen today should be fired. Or they should just go out of business altogether.

Nolmando M.

Yelp
Not exactly what we expected but pleasantly surprised. The flavors are on point and the service is so good. 10/10. My mouth and tummy are happy! Must try in the castro!

Angela A.

Yelp
This is my first time for Mr.Hen noodle house. I got number7 Dry noodle katsu(broth on side) and Karaage chicken taste is soooooo goodddddd and the price is make sense. Must try!!!!!
google avatar

Simon P.

Yelp
Traveled all the way over here to try their restaurant out and wouldn't serve us and said come back tomorrow. Nope not doing that nor ever coming back.
google avatar

Yelp
Delish. First meal from Mr. Hen was delish. So much do that I'm ordering again and leaving this review. I had the Kao Piek. Nice chicken soup option with crispy shallots... and the fat noodles were excellent.

Kevin W.

Yelp
This place ought to be mobbed. Everything I've had has been delicious. Street noodles, chicken katsu, and khao soi are all great. Service is friendly.

Alison H.

Yelp
I was looking for some food Togo, It's call street noodles guys of you come here need to give it a try this one the wonton was so good they even come with the crispy pork for Togo they gave clear soup on the side as well definitely coming back here again.

Cody M.

Yelp
I've been waiting for a simple noodle place in Castro for such a long time. I ordered the Spicy Basil Chow Mein and it is delicious. The pork is nice and crispy yet still tender, the noodles are so flavorful, and the vegetables are perfectly cooked. So glad to see this addition to the Castro. Their menu, while small (I appreciate a small menu), can appeal to anyone's cravings. The space is minimal but feels comfortable and the employees were really nice and helpful. I sincerely hope the restaurant keeps later hours because food after a certain time in SF is hard to come by. Keep up the good work! I will be back with friends!

Yelp
We ordered the #11. It slapped. Asked for the ginger sauce on the sauce after we got our food but they were out. All good. Will try next time. Their Karaage though - ! We asked for extra soup and they happily gave us another bowl. Will come back.
