Four Under-the-Radar Restaurants to Try in New Orleans Right Now | Eater New Orleans

"A brightly colored storefront on St. Claude Avenue marked by a massive smoker on wheels out front and the sweet aroma of slow-cooked meat; the spot reads like a Caribbean dream and is a lively addition to a corridor that was once home to Kebab. What began as a food truck parked off Frenchmen Street built a following for jerk chicken, ribs, curried goat, oxtails and more, and the brick-and-mortar’s orange-and-blue facade now beckons with heaping portions, vivid flavors, and friendly service." - Clair Lorell

I found this place tonight by accident when the Saint Roch Market was closed and I was looking for something potentially delicious nearby. When I think of "Island grill," I usually think of Jamaican and was pretty spot on here. The restaurant itself is a quaint little place tucked off of Saint Claude Avenue. It's a very basic layout similar to most Jamaican places I've been to around the country. The lady at the register was very friendly and greeted me when I came in. She answered all of my questions. I could see Mr Joe himself working hard in the back. I hadn't placed my order yet and was already getting a very authentic vibe. I decided to go with jerk pork today instead of my usual oxtails. As much as I love them, they can get a bit pricey at all Jamaican restaurants. They were out cabbage and the next batch wouldn't be ready for 20 minutes so I decided to get extra rice and peas. The total for my order was $24 which is incredibly reasonable. The food itself was absolutely fantastic! Completely on point in every way. I wanted to get fried plantains but they were also out of them, but I will certainly try them whenever I visit again. That you can bet on. Overall I had a great experience. I am absolutely stuffed and still have half a box for later. Tremendous food for the value. Excellent spice selections. It was spicy but not in a hot way. I could taste the fresh ginger in every bite. If my experiences continue to be this positive then I will definitely be a regular from now on. I only took off one star because they were out of several items, but that can certainly go up to a five-star review quickly.

This place rocks!!! The food is incredible - got the jerk chicken served with yellow rice and cabbage, and of course, the legendary sauce. Just a super fun place that everyone is excited to be eating at. Srsly can’t wait to return and try the ribs next time. Thank you, Mr. Joe!

Had to come find where the amazing smell was coming from walking around one night. Huge portions, my pork ribs melted in my mouth and taste even better than they smell, and a huge side of delicious rice. I'll be back next visit, thank you! There is a veggie plate available.

This place is so good! Please don’t ever change the recipe or the cook! I only order through uber eats and the food is awesome. It’s flavorful, authentic, and never to much seasoning

The service is really good. The food has good flavors at first , but they use so much pepper it over powers the flavors of the food . Everything just taste like pepper. You really can’t enjoy the food after a few bites because of the the excess pepper used.

My wife & I are on vacation this week from NY & staying on Frenchman street. Our first time in New Orleans and wanted to try all the different foods New Orleans has to offer. Well we were taking are evening walk and came across Big Joes! Boy! We’re glad we did , we ordered the Jerk chicken that was being cooked fresh in front of our eyes. Customer service was spot on and the food was A+. Thank You Big Joe for the large portions for only $15.00. We will see you again on our return next year! If you want authentic Jamaican food you need to stop at Joes.
