Mrs. Fields and the Bittersweet Smell of Success | Eater

"Founded in 1977 by Debbi Fields in Palo Alto, this cookie shop grew from a single storefront into a mall-dominant cookie chain by trading on the irresistible appeal of hot, straight-from-the-oven chocolate chip rounds that were notably soft and thick (a contrast to the crumbly, crunchy character of store-bought brands like Chips Ahoy! and the crispness championed by David’s Cookies). In its early years the company even donated cookies older than two hours rather than sell them, and aggressive sampling helped spur rapid expansion through the 1980s and into franchising in 1990, with hundreds of locations across the U.S. and abroad and a multimillion-dollar sale that followed. The founder’s wholesome working-mom persona and media presence — including a PBS baking segment that inspired future bakers — were central to the brand’s marketing and cultural appeal, even as contemporaneous coverage often spotlighted her husband’s financial role and questioned how much credit she deserved. Today the business’s name still appears on nationwide tins while the founder, who remains active online as a home baker, is no longer the public-facing corporate force she once was; the chain’s legacy lives on largely as a symbol of 1980s mall culture and a particular nostalgic ideal of home-baked comfort in America." - Bettina Makalintal

Fresh, soft, and delicious! Mrs. Fields at Valley Fair Mall always delivers the best cookies. The staff is friendly, and the chocolate chip is my go to treat every time. Highly recommended.

Google
Have loved this particular company's cookies since I was a kid living in Hong Kong. Love that all their branches are pretty consistent with their quality. I would reccomend my favriote cookie (and this has not changed for years)- the simple but loveable sugar butter cookie. Really sit down and enjoy the flavors of this one. Yum.

Google
Mrs. Fields in Valley Fair is elite. Cookies are perfect. Soft, chewy, and just baked to perfection. The gentlemen who served the cookies was friendly, which we appreciated. Sidenote, shame on you heathens leaving one star reviews — there is only one Mrs. Fields located in the San Jose area and you want to shut it down because they didn’t give you milk? Give me a break. Anyone leaving a one star review, just don’t. Because I like eating here. And I don’t want to drive 30 gosh darn minutes to the next closest one. Sheila Washington, who left the one star review below me, can safely be ignored. She must be the Cookie Monster. Anyways, eat cookies from here and support the business.

Google
I asked the store guy if the brownies were fresh enough before buying and was told they are fresh. I bought three and none of them were fresh. I can tell they are atleast 5 days old as they are all so dry and cracking like biscuit. Worst brownies I have eaten ever

Virat made a beautiful cake for my daughter's bday. He communicated well and made it exactly as described with a paw patrol logo and her name

Google
Love the nibblers! Please don’t pay any attention to 1 star reviews, place still sells fresh and amazing cookies!

Google
Actual hole in the wall version of this store. Was fine, if you want some cookies at a mall it's decent.

Google
I ordered a heart shaped cookie online, when I arrived to pick it up, it was round. Also the price I paid online was $10 more than the actual in store price. I asked why it was not what I ordered he said the wrong picture is online. He called his manager and said the only solution would be to remake but that would take 24 hours. They knew I needed the cake for a birthday that day. Very disappointed. Also the cookie was very hard.

Yelp
Definitely satisfied with my order ! I got a custom birthday cake for my girlfriend and my self's anniversary.! It was delicious and looked amazing. Awesome customer service and for sure will reorder for other events !
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
This is a great place to get a fun birthday cake for someone that loves cookies. They make a massive chocolate cookie cake. Called in the order and it was ready when they said. Everyone enjoyed the giant cookie. I am sure their smaller cookies are also good.

Yelp
it is just a store but as you know mrs. fields cookies are always top notch mostly the white chocolate macadamia nibblers. as usual buy fourty nibblers and you will get another twenty and hey plus ten percent off ~ good deal worth it!!!
google avatar

Ian R.

Yelp
The cookies were very good, the cashier was very helpful and was very kind. The place has a really good vibe and it had some good music. I highly recommend the chocolate chip cookie

Yelp
I love Mrs Fields cookies. I did the buy 40 nibblers get 20 free for $37. Am I the only one that thinks that's hella expensive? I was craving for cookies and I saw that they had the white chocolate macadamia and the triple chocolate. Sold! We were munching on it as we walked around the mall. Perfect snack to keep kids happy while we shopped around. Service was great as well. I didn't want to buy the oatmeal raisin cookie without trying it and the staff member offered a nibbler to taste. Didn't like that one too much. Overall, delicious cookies and the perfect bite for young kids.

Yelp
I recently ordered from the website. Ordering was easy, but the shipping was outrageous! I ordered 2 different things, going to the same address on the same day. I was charged for shipping on each package! Way to fail Mrs. Fields, will never order from the company again! February 2025

Yelp
I had an amazing experience at Mrs. Fields, thanks to the wonderful customer service! The staff, went above and beyond to make my visit special. Not only were the cookies delicious as always--soft, warm, and bursting with flavor--but the kindness and attention to detail made my day. It's rare to find such genuine hospitality and I will definitely be coming back for more sweet treats and great service. Thank you Habibis!!

Jennifer N.

Yelp
Easily submitted my order online and it was ready to pick up on the date and time selected. The person behind the counter was able to accommodate my request for a "broken heart." Exactly what I wanted and am happy with the service received.

Yelp
DONT GO HERE!!!! BIG FRAUDSTERS AND CHEATS We ordered the 15 nibblers get 10 free for $13.99. The lady at the counter gave us only 20 cookies, so I asked her to give us the remaining numbers, but she turned her back to us and acted as if she was filling up the rest. We did not check the second time thinking that the first time would be a genuine mistake. When we got home, the number of cookies was still the same. This is extremely bad way of doing business, will never ever go here. Very disappointed!

Yelp
This is a dessert shop that I often come to. I recommend cookies and cakes for dessert, which are my favorite.

Yelp
We were craving cookies after a long walk around the mall. They have so many options to choose from! One of the deals they were having was buy 15 nibblers and get 10 FREE for $13.99. With so many options to choose from, we decided to try every flavor they have since we had to choose 25! Our favorites were the sugar butter, chocolate chip sugar butter with mnm's and double chocolate chip. I just love how they're bite size and easy to pop into your mouth. Also, they're so soft and chewy! That's all you can wish for, for a cookie. If I find myself back here at the mall, I will for sure grab some nibblers, especially if they have that deal again!

Yelp
Great custom cookie cake for my daughter's bday. Virat made it exactly as described with pink frosting and sprinkles. Thanks for the great help and communication and yummy cake too!

Yelp
Bussin booty brownies. Shits so good i bought 5 more. So scrumptious. Chewy on the inside and crispy on the edges

Yelp
Mrs. Fields, the iconic smell of fresh baked cookies when you walk by in almost any mall. They've been around forever and happy to see they're still going strong. Redeemed a Groupon here a couple weeks ago that was extended an extra year due to the pandemic. Service was friendly and I had no problems redeeming the Groupon. They also had a buy 4 get 2 free cookie deal going on and she said it's $10 for 6 with the deal. She said I could get 12 cookies with the $20 Groupon. Ended up not having to pay anything extra yay! The display of cookies looked pretty empty but they did have most varieties in the back. We tried the milk chocolate chip, cinnamon sugar, peanut butter and triple chocolate. Cookies tasted fresh and buttery. Mostly traditional cookie flavors but they do offer cookie cakes and mini bite sized cookies. If you're craving a sweet snack while shopping, don't pass up that lovely smell when you walk by.

Yelp
Hi! I recently did a custom order for designed cookies for my child's cast for a show she was in. The man I spoke to was so helpful and the designer that did the cookies did an amazing job. I did this last minute and they were able to take on the order and even had it done ahead of schedule. They were very efficient, kind and it was reasonably priced. I was so impressed with the service I received. They were also packaged beautifully and carefully.

Yelp
2/18/23 Mrs. Fields is one of those iconic fooderies (in my head anyway) that I can totally remember from my childhood as something I always coveted, mostly cause back then I couldn't have any thanks to my cheapass parents. I did eventually have some money to try them in my 20's, and it was such a nice feeling. Well, today, that feeling was dread. My 3yr old wanted cookies, so I got their minis to try. Ewwwwww. I mean, they were edible, but I'd rather have nearly anything at the supermarket instead. Well, he changed his mind and didn't want them, so I got back in line for a chocolate dough chocolate chip.... Oh yeah that. So I waited, yes, 15min, FIFTEEN MINUTES, with one dude at the cashier and another family before me. 15min to get my minis. Then..... getting back in line for the 2nd round, another 5min for the dude in front of me. Cashier also would give your least favorite fast food restaurants' cashiers a run for your money for most i-dont-give-an-f attitude. 1/5 #santaclara #westsanjose #sanjose #cookie #cookieshop #mallstall #mallrestaurant #valleyfair

Yelp
Haven't had Mes. d'à cookies in over a decade! I remember going to the mall and smelling that sweet delicious hot baked cookie smell and knew I was near the cookie store. We decided to stop by this weekend to grab some cookies. Didn't smell that sweet freshly baked cookie smell this time :(. Ended up getting the bubblers deal buy 15 get 10 free for $13.99. Man I knew they were sweet but didn't remember the cookies being this sweet! I like the snickerdoodle and walnut choco the best.
google avatar

Yelp
Incredibly expensive!!! $8 for six mini cookies? It's like the price of street drugs.

Maria ..

Yelp
My daughter wanted a cookie for graduation instead of a cake. Spent $65 for her special cookie. Ordered it almost 2 weeks in advance and when I showed up it was a hot mess. The girl behind the counter said she wrote the wrong year and attempted to "scrape it off" but it was in blue and it stained the cookie. All she could say was that she was working alone that day and didn't offer any type of discount. Unable to order a new cookie because I did not have any time. Didn't want to upset my daughter so I just took the cookie but extremely disappointed and I would not order from them again. Not worth the money for such horrible service.

Yelp
Chocolate chip.. m&ms, macadamia cookies .. this is the spot! Cookies are always soft snd taste fresh baked . Definitely my go-to! One thing I would like management to note however is to remind employees to change their gloves. The person helping me today was using the same gloves hands to handle the payment and was about to grab my cookies with it !! Just alot of germs on that and I'm sure thats why the box of gloves is right on top for you to grab before getting customers food . I 've notice a lot of places in general who forget to change their gloves

Yelp
Yes, I can cook and I can bake but it's not worth going through all the trouble so whenever we are at the mall we usually stop by because who can say "no" to chocolate chip cookies and double-fudge brownies? Service is typically a miss. It feels like they're unfriendly, even. If I'm ever sad or mad, this is one of the ways to get to my heart.
google avatar

Yelp
This Mrs. Fields location is the best of the Best! It's always the highlight of our visit to Valley Fair Mall. We recently pre-ordered 7 dozen Chocolate Chip cookies to take to various folks and the communications from the store Manager, the quality of the cookies, and the wonderful customer service was A++. Looking forward to our next visit!!

Yelp
Mannnn. Why are the cinnamon & sugar cookies the best thing they ever baked here? Such nostalgia. They taste the same like they did when I was a young child living in SF. Still super chewy, perfectly soft, and not too sweet. This is probably the best cookie they have. This is sooo good. It's like an upgraded Mrs Fields snickerdoodle. If you sign up for rewards at the register you get a free nibbled. I love how all staff have always been nice and friendly here. I've always had positive interactions at this location and A1 quality fresh baked cookies.
google avatar

Nick K.

Yelp
The fiancé wanted a treat, so we walked over. They're conveniently located, which is why we went, but they're completely over priced and the employees always seem to come across like you're bothering them when you go to order. I'd you're in a lunch for a cookie and don't want to/can't go anywhere else, and don't care in the moment that the cookies are way too expensive for what you'll be paying, then fo for it.

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
My dad went and ordered a cake with piping on the whole top of the cake, what we got was a smooth top of icing instead. Very disappointed especially for it being a $50 cake.
google avatar

Yelp
Ordered a giant cookie cake over the phone the day before NYE (which is my husband's birthday). I spoke to Virat on the phone who was incredibly patient and friendly when helping me create the cake. When he asked what time I wanted the cake ready for pickup, I asked him when he thought it would be less busy because of the holidays. I told him maybe the earliest time possible would be better since I was coming all the way from Gilroy and ideally would make it back before my son's naptime. Virat said, "Gilroy? I live there too! Let me see if I can bring the cake to you on my way home". Which he did!!! I mean, talk about amazing customer service. He saved me a long drive with a baby and I could not be more thankful. He was insanely sweet and wouldn't even let me tip him!! Virat, if you're reading this, you are awesome and my husband says thank you as well. He agrees- best customer service ever! He loved his cookie cake! Thank you for going above and beyond for us. We will always remember :)

Yelp
I am a little late but Mrs.Fields is handy whenever I get into the sweets mood. Every now and then even I enjoy buying a couple of cookies to feed my sweet cravings. Price-wise its slightly on the upper end, but the flavor more than makes up for it.
google avatar

Yelp
If I can give ZERO stars i would . HORRIBLE SERVICE! my Aunt ordered a cookie cake for a Saturday pick up , I went to pick up the cake and the store was closed. !!!! the entire mall was opened but they were closed . There was no refund nor courtesy to call us and let us know they were not going to be open .My nephew had no birthday cake for his party 2nd time I was sold Oatmeal cookies from an older Indian man that said the cookies didn't have any nuts and they had WALNUTS!! I also bought lemonade that was rotten the lemon tasted moldy and there were BUGSSSS in my cup!! I didn't who what was nastier the lemonade or the younger gentlemen not using gloves when he was handling cookies. with the virus going on you'd think they'd be a little more cleaner. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!!

Bryanna L.

Yelp
I ordered a heart shaped cookie in the flavor sugar butter for someone for Valentine's Day when I went to pick it up the receipt on the box said sugar butter so I didn't bother checking it since I was in a rush. I got home and it was the wrong flavor ! I called and try to get my money back the girl who answered the phone hung up and then when I called back she tried saying she didn't. She said her manager was going to call me which he eventually did he said he was going to look into it, give me a refund and call me back but he never did . Today current date is the 24 of February and I have yet to receive my refund I called again today and they said my manager would be in contact AGAIN. Ridiculous at this point .

Yelp
I used to know the previous owner back before 2014-2015ish. Super nice owner and she left due to health reasons but ever since she left and passed it down to other associates. They weren't as empathic and friendly as her. And I feel the culture and love that she put in her service and care has dropped so much... because today, the lady who helped us was awfully rude and very cold. She had other associates just stand there and watch her count the cookies for my mom and me. Not even a Hi or welcome or anything as we approached. The service just got worse. It's just not today, but other times with other associates within this year and last, It makes me not want to buy anymore because they're super rude. Some just stand behind the counter and just wait for someone to call them for service. Also if you have the reward offer to put in our phone number, not just once, but THREE times they wouldn't let me put the number down. If you don't want to give us offers and loyalty membership, remove them from your counter PLEASE. I have been trying to put my number down for at least two years of the 5-6 times I have been coming here. I think that's as long as my review can get. There's not much to say anything else...
google avatar

Alexia F.

Yelp
Terrible costumer service.. literally the worse. I asked for a hazelnut iced coffee. I got a hot coffee with more milk than anything. It's literally just milk. Mom asked for a hot regular coffee, it was cold. They were very slow for what we got ( 2 coffees and 1 cookie) it wasn't even busy and there were two people working. Could've definitely be better. Never coming back..
google avatar

Neloffer E.

Yelp
I'm disappointed in the service and taste of the nibblers I got. The lady who was helping me was very rude and she made it very obvious that she did not want to work today! I ordered semi sweet chocolate chip, milk chocolate chip, and white macadamia. The cookies were stale and gross. I love Mrs field cookies and always end up finishing every last bit of the cookies but I tossed these out after taking a few bites. What a disappointment!
google avatar

HsiaoCheng W.

Yelp
Generally helpful staff but a bit on the pushy side. They did a good job on our cookie cake but it was expensive. For the same price you can get a ice cream cake at cold stone which probably taste better. Recommend not covering the top with icing as it tends to be a bit too sweet. Even my kiddo who can eat just frosting only had one piece to my surprise.
google avatar

Ashley C.

Yelp
Very delicious! A small little Mrs. Fields! Just a walk up Mrs. Fields. They still had many options to choose from. There cookies are definitely one of a kind and they have the best cookie cakes you could get! They even had cute little personal cookie cakes!
google avatar

Dhruvi T.

Yelp
This place is amazing for cookies. The new owners are so friendly, helpful and patient. The cookie itself was so delicious. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone with a sweet tooth. And I am definitely returning here every time on a visit to the mall
google avatar

Kenneth S.

Yelp
I would absolutely under no circumstances step anywhere close to this store. My girlfriend and I stood in line and waited to order while the lady in front of us was being helped. The lady at the register helping the customer kept pulling her mask down to speak to the customer while the other worker put more cookies in the display case with her mask completely off of her face. The mask was wrapped around her ears and tucked under her chin as she proceeded to walk back and forth between the back and the display case to add more cookies. So it's hard to imagine in the less than 5 minutes that I stood in line what's going on throughout the entire day.
google avatar

Sunil R.

Yelp
My favorite indulgence at the mall...brings back memories of childhood.
google avatar

Helen A.

Yelp
The cookies are good, and one of my fondest memories as a kid was getting a sugar cookie from Mrs. Fields. However, today I came to get a brownie with a child who has a peanut allergy. When I asked the employee if there are any peanuts in the brownies, he said he didn't know. I told him that the child I'm buying it for has a peanut allergy, but he didn't seem bothered by it and didn't ask anyone. I ended up buying a cookie to be safe, but even then I didn't feel comfortable giving the child the cookie (so I didn't) and felt frustrated by the worker's dismissive attitude, especially since so many people have severe peanut allergies.
google avatar

Jennifer P.

Yelp
They were nice and did a good job on the cookie cake. I knocked a star bc they changed my pick up time. Word to the wise, don't pick a design with tons of frosting, it's way too sweet.
google avatar

V C.

Yelp
Their cookies are pretty darn good if you are into sweets...like super, sweet cookies :P Granted, they're slightly expensive; a dozen mini cookies for $5.50. The cookies, however, are moist, sweet and buttery...so fattening and so yummy! I'm not really a fan of their soft and chewy cookies. I mean, I love soft cookies in general, but the chewy texture seems a bit weird for my tastes. They also have great selections of cookies to choose from and I did the mix and match. Had the raisins, chocolate chips and m&m cookies, but my favorite has got to be the white chocolate macadamia! It combined two of my great loves and was a seriously scrumptious little treat. Overall, these cookies are definitely worth trying, but be warned: they are highly addictive!
google avatar

Darlene C.

Yelp
Love the cookies! Fresh, soft and chewy really mouthwatering. The prices on the cookies are somewhat fair however the cost of a soft drink is jaw dropping!! Over $3.00 for a soft drink when you can get one for $1.25 at Nordstrom bev bar. Seems all their profits are wrapped up in the soft drinks. Customer service is good.
google avatar

Brian D.

Yelp
Come on! Who doesn't love Mrs Field's cookies! Especially the smaller ones you buy in dozens and eat before you even get home with some for your family! :) The nut filled chocolate macaroon type things are yummy especially the almond filled ones whatever they are! There is a reason this chain has been around for dozens of years,it's traditionally yummy for your sweat tooth! Good location for this one as well!

Rutaba M.

Yelp
Got some delivered as a birthday gift and the delivery was done early! My friend said she loved them and the packaging was pretty cute as well.

Andrea L.

Yelp
The cookies I purchased were hard as rock, disgusting. As if they pulled them out from the back or as if they've been on display for a longer period than they should.
google avatar

Anne B.

Yelp
Cookies are good and staff was friendly. My complaint was they brought out a fresh batch of mini chocolate chip cookies with walnuts, (or so I thought as they placed them behind that marker) so we ordered a few. On the drive home, we released they were actually oatmeal raisin. They really need to make sure they are giving you the items you asked for.

Caley M.

Yelp
After encountering an ordering snafu on a recent online order delivery from this particular location, the staff came shining through with an outside-the-box customer satisfaction solution that blew me away. Big thanks to store manager Jackie and associate Jona for creatively thinking of a solution to take care of the situation and make things more than right. Really awesome!
google avatar

Stephen G.

Yelp
Cookies taste fine but I assume they're frozen so no surprise there. The main issue is there's no pricing signage and then when they explain the pricing, it makes no sense. For example, 4 cookies are $9.95. I pick 4 cookies. Then he says pick one more for free. So that's really 5 cookies for $9.95. Why be so convoluted?
google avatar

Vivian P.

Yelp
Stopped by to buy some nibbles as a lunch dessert to share with some of my coworkers and the man (im assuming is the manager of the place) kept really pushing me to order more. I only wanted 10 and he kept for pushing 12 and 14 and 16. He charged $9 for 10 small cookie nibblers.. don't think I'll be coming here anymore, extremely overpriced and cookies tasted raw almost.
google avatar

Lyn C.

Yelp
The lady who helped me was rude/unfriendly. I could deal with bad service but what was really disappointing was the cookies. They were not good at all. The cookies were crumbly, possibly yesterday's batch.
